Norman Bates and Marion Crane are often the first two characters that come to mind when it comes to Psycho. Or well, outside of Alfred Hitchcock at least. @@Stereostupid There are two things that keep it from being as perfect as the original. Lila's death freaked me the hell out as a kid, but from my current perspective, they went a step too far. It didn't need to be gory, and the gore now looks as cheesy as Kraft Macaroni. The other thing is "mother." I like the twist, but Richard Franklin's misdirection (like Mary seeing her own eye through the peephole) doesn't quite hold up to scrutiny. Those gripes aside, it's still one of the best sequels ever made.

One of Anthony Perkins' most underrated performances was in The Trial (1962), an Orson Welles-directed adaptation of Franz Kafka's book. The movie essentially puts Perkins' character in an unescapable nightmare, I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. It's practically a psychological horror.

I remember going to Universal Studios as a kid and they had a Hitchcock show. It was the Psycho set. The house alongside with the motel. They had actors come out and reenact the scenes from the movie as it played in the background. I’ll never forget how real The mother’s voice felt on that sound stage and how the artificial rain kicked against the old house. Ever since that day i grew to both fear and love this movie.

My very favorite parody of Psycho's "Shower Scene" was by Mel Brooks in his spoof of all things Hitchcock "High Anxiety"!! 🙃🙃🙃 Of all the sequels I adored Psycho 4 - The Beginning best. Olivia Hussey's performance as young Norma Bates really fleshed out Mothers character and why Norman killed her.
@HorrorMetalMaestroRedrusty66
Lots of fans don't know this, but his character was done again by him 5 years later, but different, in 1965's The Fool Killer, where he once again plays a serial killer of a different sort and reason. But you see Norman all over his portrayal of Milo in that film, a lot more psychological but a performance you don't want to miss either. I love all 4 of the films. care ntohing about the tv movie and barely paid attention to the series.

BATES MOTEL is fucking epic. What an emotional rollercoaster. You really gotta detach from your preconceptions of the film lore and appreciate it as its own thing. PSYCHO 2 and 3 are underrated and fun slashers with a good bit of campy humor but an honest attempt at follow-ups. I have yet to see any of the further installments, but I have a bit of a soft spot for PSYCHO as it's pretty much the O.G. slasher film and established so many horror tropes we now have come to expect!

Also worth checking out: STRAIT-JACKET with Joan Crawford, from writer Robert Bloch & director William Castle. It feels like a sequel to PSYCHO, only with a woman instead of a guy. As a result, PSYCHO II feels like a remake of STRAIT-JACKET. I remember going into PSYCHO II wondering, okay, how are they going to do this story different? THEY DID!

Even though the first movie was shot in black and white, Hitchcock still used color to tell us things. For instance, in the beginning of the movie, Marion Crane’s undergarments were white showing that she was pure and innocent. When she undressed for the shower, her undergarments are black showing that she sinned.

In the book it makes sense for Norman to have been older, since Norman would have been a young man, when he killed his mother and her lover. In the film, Norman would have been a child, but who can argue with Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates in the movie?

You never see the back of the Bates house in "Psycho 2". However, the house was used in "DC Cab"(1983). When I visited Universal Studios at that time, there was what appeared to be a two car garage behind the Psycho house set, which has since been removed. I have never seen "DC Cab". However, I think the house was where kidnappers were keeping two children, so the back of the house may have been completed for that film.

Since Billy Loomis mention Norman Bates in scream. In the next scream if Stu comes back as the killer faking his death. I think a full circle twist would be Sam, Billy’s daughter who has mental illness similar to Bates seeing visions of her father. She ends up thinking she is him like Norman thought he was mother.

I actually just watched Psycho recently after reading the book (I read it once years ago, but felt like reading it again after seeing news about a new limited edition re-print coming out, which sadly, I have had to pass on). Its an interesting read. While Hitchcock's film closely follows it very well, one crucial element he did change was making it start off following Marion Crane & her crime, which are short elements in the book, so the shower scene isn't a shocking twist like in the film. It was a wise creative decision on his part to get that extra twist in. I loved these movies as a kid, but I've not seen them (the sequels, or the remake), in years. I only saw the remake once as a kid & hated it. I thought it was boring & stupid. I also took a VIP tour with my Mum at Universal Studios in 2006, & our tour group got to stop off & walk around on the Psycho set of the backlot tour which was an amazing experience.

Well. If you've already watched all the movies you know his mother was a abusive person. And by Blood she wasn't his mother she was his aunt oh, she had a pseudo incestuous relationship with him. Or I should say a covert incest relationship with him.. And then she made him feel dirty for for responding to her behavior. Basically he was supposed abused and then gas-lit that there was no abuse. That he was just disgusting and sick, his real mother was mentally ill and I do believe she went away. What I love about the town that he grew up in is when the sister of the girl that was murdered in the first thing came to visit and was trying to trick him into admitting that he murdered her sister. A good lot of townsfolk that were in the diner was telling her to leave him alone including a police officer or Deputy or whatever. His I suppose the people around him figured he was sick and that he had gotten a little bit better or better enough to be out. And they didn't want him stressed. Hell even she didn't want him stressed after awhile. The origin story wasn't that bad, I can't even say that Norman getting a good ending and burning that fuckinghouse was a good idea as well. The fact that he chose to believe that his child would be nothing like him and that he could have a good future and his nurse / doctor or whatever the hell she was why he can trust her. I think it's a little weird that both the franchise and several other franchises show doctors dating their psyche patience is kind of bad but hey she loves him and you know good for her. All's well that ends well I can see why they wanted to make it into a television show. And events Vaughn thing wasn't that bad but yeah it's not my favorite he would never be my favorite Norman anyting. I do like the show version of Norma better than I do the flashback Norma.
