Wudang Mountain Tai Chi is a Hard Martial Art

We love visiting Wudang Mountain in China even more than Shaolin Temple. The martial arts schools are spread across a range of mountains and valleys and none are as important as the Wudang SanFeng Academy, where the Tai Chi is not the kind you see in your local park - it's a deadly martial art. Our video title is a play on words as this is not strictly Tai Chi but it is Hard to learn! The chief instructor is grandmaster and Taoist priest Zhong Yun Long, the most senior martial arts master at Wudang.
Music in this video by Baptiste Tavernier. Subscribe to see our new Wudang martial arts series. Go to emptymindfilms.com for more information.

Something about the flow of tai chi makes it so relaxing for me to watch.

While this does look like the attire of Wudang, I think this is not Taijiiquan. This looks more like Fuhuquan (伏虎拳) or the "Tiger Taming Fist". You can tell because there's the explicit use of leg sweeps and elbows in this. Fuhuquan is part of Wudangquan, but it is not Taijiquan.

By now, the only way to actually train a martial art is doing the dishes, vacuum the floors, pick your nose. Now THOSE are top secret techniques hidden because of slaver-emperor-government-wizards. There's always something hidden because of something or someone. It can't just be a grappling art that people 200 years later thought was slo-mo breakdancing. Nah..it would make it unspecial.
@1flash3571

Beautiful to watch. I was quite ignorant as a young man and thought tai chi was silly. I've recently been very interested in training and now recognize the purpose of it and its utility. Simply amazing to watch this, very cool to see.

And what’s the purpose other than some mild fitness training? It’s definitely useless in a fight.
@russman738

@@darrenstettner5381 What exactly is useless in a fight? The punches? The kicks? General Movement? Obviously this isn't a "do these movements and you win all the times", nothing is.
@darrenstettner5381
@darrenstettner5381 Год назад
@@russman738 yes to all. The movements are useless, the strikes are weak and awkward. Practicing katas/forms is a dumb and ineffective way to learn practical fighting skills. There’s almost nothing about it that would be helpful in an actual fight. The minor development of flexibility, balance and strength you’d get from doing the forms would be the only minor benefit and in that case it’d be better just to go work out in a gym. I’m the opposite of the original poster. I believed in all that martial arts lore crap when I was young. I studied aikido, tai chi and kung Fu. Then I fought a boxer and got completely toyed with. I went against a wrestler and was helpless. Trust me, the traditional martial arts with all their lore and spiritual bs are absolutely useless when it comes to fighting. You’d be better off taking ballet. If you want to learn to fight then stick with the stress tested martial arts like Jiujitsu, boxing, Muay Thai, etc. those actually do work in fights.
@russman738
@russman738 Год назад
@@darrenstettner5381 mmm, interesting opinion.
@Peter-wj2hz
@Peter-wj2hz Год назад
@@darrenstettner5381 Speaking the hard truth. If your interest in fighting, you are better off doing a sport that allows you to fight. It's not rocket science. Most of the people doing martial arts like the one in the video are not interested in fighting, and are not fooling themselves. They are just interested in the health benefits and cultural aspects. Would Tai Chi be useful for fighting if people actually regularly trained in a competitive, stress-testing environment? Maybe. But It would also start to look a lot like Wrestling. Even the Judo rules in the Olympics recently had to change because it was becoming too similar to Wrestling in that hyper-competitive environment (so they took away leg picks).

It is disheartening reading the comments from people who maybe are practising martial arts without getting their real meaning and goals, which is not fighting, but self control and self discipline. The problem is that Western people do not get the philosophy behind these arts and are not interested in personal development, but just in showing off a kind of power and physical strength that are just the manifestation of the their narcissism.. Pearls thrown to pigs....
@Peter-wj2hz
@Peter-wj2hz Год назад
Firstly, you are a racist, so you can shove your sweeping cultural assumptions where the sun don't shine. Secondly, I did not say that there is no meaning or goal in these forms. I merely asked for a demonstration. On the contrary, I believe that there are a lot of health, mental and cultural benefits to practicing forms. Furthermore, it is something people enjoy doing, so I have no problem with it. On the other hand, I do have a problem with the title of the video naming this style of training as "Hard." This video is about as soft, in the wushu sense, and in the practical sense, as you can get. Thirdly, appreciation of forms is improved through practice against an intelligent, resisting opponent. A practitioner will never fully understand their forms without this crucial element of training. You speak of personal development, but an unwillingness to apply training in context stands in the way of a practitioner's growth and knowledge. Please have an open mind about these things rather than making uninformed assumptions about people you do not know. I say this because I care deeply about the future of Chinese martial arts, and weep for what it has become.
