Wurmple's double evolution lines bring something genuinely fun to the bug table ||  

It’s funny how you describe Dustox. You’re not wrong at all, it’s just that it’s still adorable to me.

The duality stretches further if you examine their behavior according to their Dex entries: Beautifly is described as aggressive and greedy. They constantly attacks other Pokémon that intrude into their territory and feeding grounds, even going as far as to drain the fluids of intruders by stabbing them with their proboscis. Dustox on the other hand are nocturnal and rather calm, being drawn to lights in the night, as moths do. They eat leaves and their toxins only come in to play whenever they feel threatened and merely as a defense mechanism to help them escape rather than fight.

Dustox isn't even that horrifying, it's just a very mischevious looking Pokemon

I really love how Jessy always believed her little cocoon would turn into a beautiful beautifly, instead she got a Dustox but rather than be angry at the Pokémon she embraced it and gushed about great is was with the enthusiasm of a schoolgirl

The best part is that the Dex entries tell you the truth: Dustox is just a little guy and Beautifly is a horrifying flesh-slurping monstrosity.

I grew up watching the gen 3 anime, and i absolutely loved that both May and Jessie started out with Wurmples, May's evolved into a Beautifly first and Jessie was so excited to get a Beautifly but ended up with Dustix instead. And she just loves the hell out of Dustox anyway, she enters it in contests just as often as May enters her Beautifly. I've always loved that Team Rocket ends up with the weirder/uglier/scarier Pokemon most of the time, and they still love their buddies just as much as the main kids do.

Funny thing is beautifly is the terrifying one if you read the dex entries. It literally stabs other Pokémon and sucks them dry

I remember when I got my first Wurmple, I used to think that the evolution was gender based with the male being Dustox and the females becoming Beautifly, you could imagine my surprise when my little girl turned into a Dustox during the second gym, and I loved every single second of having her in my team.

That sidequest in Legends Arceus. I knew what was going to happen when I gave him a wurmple and it lead to a fun little quest chain of watching his denial turn into acceptance as it evolved.

I think one overlooked aspect is that the divergence via a hidden stat is more of a neat thing rather than a point of frustration, since it's an early game bug that will evolve quickly~

it really does emulate that childhood experience of getting some kind of cheap bug terrarium, putting a caterpillar in it, and then realizing you got a moth and not a butterfly its so good

Dustox's eyes resemble a radiation warning symbol in the shape of a shield. This relates to how it mostly uses its toxins defensively.

You give such vivid descriptions of things during your reviews, it really gives me a new appreciation for character designs I normally don’t think too hard about. Adds color back to the world, I think.

What I thought was best about these was in the anime where both May and Jessie caught a Wurmple and while May got a Silcoon Jessie thought her Cascoon was the same until it evolved into a Dustox, but she still loved it.

Idk if i ever thought hiding evo factors behind stats we cant see was all that fun tbh, but i do appreciate that wurmple family incentives you to take a harder path in raising a silcoon or cascoon for a specific result or have an easier time training wurmple but at a gamble

Another interesting thing about Dustox and Beautifly is in the pokedex. The majority of Beauitfly's entries go out of their way to say that Beautifly is *aggressive*, even when mildly disturbed, some pokedex entries even implying it's omnivourous too... Meanwhile Dustox, is cast as docile, only being referred to as dangerous because of the poison it sheds when flying, but it's never the aggressor... Just a neat dichotomy.

Nowadays, anytime i see Wurmple, I think back to Chuggaaconroy having to break down the complexity of ehat determines someone getting Beautifly vs Dustox. And the amount of times i got Cascoon as a kid cause i was trying to get Beautifly was absolutely stressful

Something I wonder, is if Wurmple evolves into both, or if Dustox and Beautifly's Wurmple are different species and they just look very alike (Yes, I know because of game mechanics, a Dustox can lay a Wurmple that will become a Beautifly, but it would be an interesting lore thing)

I love Dustox a lot. He was my first ever caught pokemon, all the way back in Ruby cuz I like grubs from hollow knight, caught Wurmple and it evolved in Cascoon. I even sayed for quite a long time that Dustox is my favorite bug type of all time. It is just, if he was not one of the weakest mons, he would still had been my most loved bug. And if he also had a good shiny.

Funfact: in reality moths are rarely poisonous but almost all butterflies are. Hence moths often tarn themselves while butterflies display colors - colors to warn animals of their bad taste / poison.

Doing challenge runs of Pokemon Emerald has taught me to truly love and appreciate Dustox and it’s now an honest to god favorite of mine. It has such incredible utility in its level-up moveset and stats that let it hold its own even into the later parts of the game. Naturally learning Moonlight for self healing and Protect for stalling allow it really amazing synergy with Toxic. It’s got a decent defensive type with some useful quad resistances, and just enough bulk to never not be useful. Plus I love how silly its design looks.

That hidden random stat gimmick made its way into Its evolution in Pokemon Go as well

Thinking about it more- Wurmple has to be two different species. Beautifly larvae would have evoled to be more like Dustox larvae as a form of minicry. Yet somehow the pokedex researchers haven't figured that out yet.

I can't see Dustox' eyes the right way, they've always just looked like wiffle ball coverings over its actual eyes

Actually in the first gen three games; there was 4 factors that could change at any time; making it able that you could get a beautifly from the wrong evolution and vice versa. Hidden stats: Ev's and Iv's Food it likes Nature Steps It can roll anything in that in that combo and it was hilarious; because once it evolved all those stats get rerolled even the nature and that's how it was coded.

i love dustox cause moths are hella cute. i only find it strange that their eyes are basically the arm patch blind people wear.

Oddly enough, to me, Dustox is just a lil’ guy, and one of the most adorable Pokemon, imo.
