My grandpa was a border guard after ww2 which was basically the start of the Cold War. The force he was in was called American cowboys because they rode horses and carried hand guns.

Just a small note, the sister ships of Titanic was Britannic and Olympic. Lusitania was a different ship entirely. Britannic did sink during the war though after hitting a mine in 1916 outside the Greek island of Kea.

Thank you! Yes I realized that after the fact. I used to be obsessed about titanic and remembered learning that the Britannic was a hospital ship and got sunk in the war. Thanks again! -Adam

@@CanadiansReact I’m glad someone mentioned that. I was like “nooooooo!” LOL Lusitania and Mauritania were the exact reason the Olympic class ships existed. Lusitania was built for speed, shaking so bad it had to be reinforced all over. White star knew they would have a difficult time fighting speed. So they instead built luxury. I too am a Titanic egg head lol

One reason for the uniform change was that smokeless gunpowder had recently been invented. Durring the previous period of History, bright uniforms were needed to identify your troops on a Smokey battlefield.

The Lusitania was not Titanic's sister ship. Titanic was owned by The White Star Line while Lusitania was owned by Cunard.

Unfortunately, that's not true. Yes, the Canadians were considered good soldiers, but the SA was formed in 1920 and the SS in 1925, so way before WW2.

The reference to storm troopers came from WW1. Not WW2. The name came from the Canadian troops of WW1

@@CanadiansReact I would like to know the source for this. I searched for this but honestly can not find anything supporting this statement. Stormtroopers were not limited to Canada only, almost every other country had its own variations. This might be whats left of British propaganda who were praising their colonies. What I find to be interesting though, is the fact stormtroopers are associated with Nazi Germany when they are not the same thing at all. Stormtroopers (Sturmtruppen) or shock troops (Shocktruppen) were exclusively used by Imperial Germany. The so called storm detachment (Sturmabteilung, SA) and the protection squad (Schutzstaffel, SS) had little to do with a stromtrooper. What is true though is the ruthlessness of Canadian forces feared by German soldiers.
@randomguy9113
@randomguy9113 3 года назад
It’s been about 5 years since I read it but there is a book titled Shock Troops by the historian Tim Cook and it’s all about the Canadian corps in the last two years of WW1. Of course the term wasn’t exclusive to just Canada the Australian corps deserves just as much praise as well as various other British and German divisions. It’s simply the fact that the Canadians received such an elite reputation after Vimy and Passchendaele that they were constantly used to spearhead major British offensives. They even had to begin moving about the front in secret for if the Germans were to learn of their position they would come to expect a major attack in that area. The hundred days offensive still fascinates me as 4 Canadian divisions defeated or routed up to 41 German divisions. I might be biased but I think the title is earned

To make something clear in this discussion: Sturmtruppen just means: assault troops. Nothing more than that. Towards the later years of WW1, both sides had evolved different approaches to the taking of trenches. The western allies used mass charges over a wide front, to overrun the defending germans. This is why the british invested so much in the first tanks compared to the germans, because having armored support for these infantry assaults helps keeping casualties down and is a moral shock to the defenders. The germans found more succes during the course of the war with small groups of infantrymen crawling into the opposing trenches and making small raids with close-quarters combat. They invested in this doctrine instead and seperated the defending troops from the assault troops (Sturmtruppen), because of the danger and brutality of these raids. these Sturmtruppen were given leave, better rations and equipment (for example early submachineguns, pistols and sometimes even so called lobster armour). It did not take long before they were seen as elite soldiers in the german military. Almost 20 years later, after Hitler’s rise to power in Germany, the SS took over the role of the SA in the night of the long knives. The SS was painted as a sort of order of noble knights serving the modern german state. In order to affirm that reputation, Himmler made the SS into the moral successors of the ‘old princes of the battlefield’, the Sturmtruppen. It is here that the Sturmtruppen got their more mythological reputation, rather than the elite assault troops in WW1. This enormous textdump is just to make the point that it seems more likely that they get their name from their role on the battlefield, to make assaults on the enemy trenches in WW1 rather than Canadian soldiers. It’s always possible but I think that it might be an urban myth sprung from the propoganda in Nazi-Germany in the 1930’s. It’s definitely not a decision from Hitler though, that seems certain.

It's kind of hilarious that we Germans always get blamed for when an Austrian starts a World War... Like seriously... both WWs were started by an Austrian and ended on the Germans xD And still some People are wondering why so many Germans hate Austria. P.S.: They also declined that Mozart was an Austrian and Adolf a German, although it was vice versa ^^"

I mean, yes the first war was basically started by Austria using the assasination as an excuse (tbh sooner or later one of the countries had to start the war cause the relationships were super tense at the time) but how about the second war? Ok, Hitler was born in Austria but in the end he was naturalized german and he certainly didn't start the war himself; Europe should have seen it coming after the unfair Treaties of Versailles. Btw i'm absolutly not defending the germany of that time but I think in both wars there were more that one warmongers

Canadians played a big part in ww1 and 2, i think the reason they aren't mentioned much in this video is because much like the Indian and other British Colony soldiers their involvement is sort of amalgamated into the "British" offensives and so is just represented as a union jack in this video. due to being a Colony at the time Canada was basically involved in the war as soon as the UK was, I believe in WW1 they pretty much had to answer the call to arms but in WW2 they chose to join of their own volition. unlike USA which tend to drag their feet for a few years to see which way the winds blowing.

Yes a Canadian female engineer created the Spitfire planes that all British and Canadian soldiers flew to save the Battle of Britain in 1940 and she was dying of Polio. If it wasn't for her we very well could have lost the war. The U.S. didn't join till Dec. 1941.
@Delicious_J

@@daniellysohirka5079 Erm...no, the supermarine spitfire was invented by R.J. Mitchell, of Supermarine Ltd, when the British air ministry called specifications for a high performance fighter plane with 8 machine guns Where on earth did you get the idea the spitfire was designed by a canadian woman dying of polio? I believe you are referring to a specific fuel valve for the spitfire later invented by a woman, whcih allowed the spitfire to perform more drastic manouvres in the air without messign their fuel lines around. This is the only thing to do with the spitfire which involved a female inventor as far as I know.

Of course, especially because the British and French were so good at carving up other peoples countries. Before and after WWI and II. History is invariably written by the victors. Look at the world map between WWI and II and let me know what you see. Imperialism at its finest. I am not trying to justify German or Ottoman actions but please stop behaving as if the British and French were in any way better. The 'Arabs' certainly had to learn the hard way that fighting the Ottomans for the British was a big mistake.
