Greetings all.
Welcome to the official home of the hastings siren. Purchased and restored with no expenses spared and now with a secure future back in the area she served when times were bleak
Restoration was not carried out by self. Just the wonga for it be done.
Carter’s air raid siren. In attack mode, to achieve this sound in ww2 they would power the siren up to full speed. Once there they dropped the power for 4 seconds and powered back up for 6 seconds.
Of course this was done automatically from the cabinets below.

I remember when we were kids in the 60s and possibly into the early 70s, the local fire station in Horton Kirby & South Darenth had an air raid siren they still used to call the firemen in to a shout. They used the all clear rather than the attack sound. They later issued them with these 'new fangled pager things' and alas, the siren fell silent.

We’re told this is progress. How ever for a firemen call out. It’s kinda understandable that sounding a siren, perhaps is a Socail disturbance to much in the middle of the night etc. But thank you to that insight on how some of these were used.

What fascinates me about these videos is that the sirens slightly different up close. In those old recordings of the Blitzkrieg, they sound so ghostly and almost "natural". In these, you can tell they're actual machines and they have a harsher sound.

Also I think it’s the fact that there aren’t several going off at the same time. In the old footage of the air raids across London in particular, you would often hear several going off at the same time, some in the distance and some close by. This gives the overall sound a real haunting effect that chills you to the bone!

Quite often in talking about interests in ww2. People ask what’s the things you liked the most. Some people talk about individuals. Some it’s the tanks. Commonly your find a lot of people like the planes. For me and I appreciate the fear factor Associated with sirens, but like gas masks and the shelters. Sirens where a warning system that provoked people in to running for cover. So it’s actually an item, a sound that I often neglect the fear it also gave people. So it’s a life saving device all wrapped up in the middle of what is about to be the start of tragic events coming next.

Great siren.... there happened to be one of these being a Carter model with a badge riveted onto the front of the motor housing. This was located on top of an old cinema in 1998 where I live in Yorkshire. I discovered this after having to get onto the roof to look at a TV aerial problem up there, that served a take away food shop below under the old cinema. As I had the key to get up there, I returned later taking a friend onto the roof with me armed with a shifter & a socket set. We got the four mounting bolts released, but it was so heavy that even both of us could not lift it!. It was in the city center, & I was told this this was one of the bigger 50 mile radius sirens. It even had a lifting eye mounted on top in the center of the motor housing, with a large white number stenciled on the top of it. They pulled the building down around the year 2000, & as soon as I discovered the start of the demolition, I went to see if it was still available, but was told it had already gone. I wonder who if anyone got their hands on this.
@mintysgt

@galaxion62
@galaxion62 3 года назад
@@mintysgt Yes... me too... :) looking at your siren here, I recollect the one on the cinema roof was longer than the one you have. Also the ends of the siren rotors were enclosed within the casting, only having an open hole of approx 3 or 4 inches at either end in the center, where the central rotor fastening nuts could be seen. We could rotate the rotors through the end holes & even that felt heavy, it was indeed a beast!. Wish I could have got it down, but the weight of it, was unbelievable!.

To the point where most siren sounds aren't scary to me. but this is one of the few that gives me chills. It almost makes me feel like a bad person for being fascinated by it, knowing there are people who have heard it, knowing it's NOT a test, and they may very well be dead before it's over. In this rare Occurrence yet another rare occurrence happened maybe, or the two go together due to the nature of the 1st. The power feed for the siren was not cut off meaning that it was left live and disused. Was cut off in 2019 after the siren was removed. How ever the control unit in the cabinet below was stolen between 2016-18 I believe Bt and the police stations I believe would of had control of setting them off. You know sometimes I wonder - why don’t those things have small brakes on them to slow down the rotors? It seems so weird that they take sooooo long to spin down, and having all that extras spinning below the audible pitch range seems like extra unneeded wear and tear on the motor. Food for thought...

@mintysgt
@mintysgt 2 года назад
@@George-jz9fk I’ve heard story’s of sirens being heard quite some distance away. But the landscape is the main issue. This particular siren my father was late to the 1st local sounding of this siren. On arrival perhaps 6-7mins after it was sounded. Said approximately a mile away as he came over the last hill to the location. Thought he missed his chance as he neared the the top could hear the siren winding down very clearly Real bad conditions 2-300 meters away you could easily have enough landscape etc to not hear it at all. As demonstrated at a fuel depot a few years ago to me, in the right conditions you could hear it easily 2-3 miles after that I think the noise unless you knew it was going off and listened out for it would just be in heard back ground noise etc. How ever it’s effective range in all conditions is obviously key factor. Hence why some sirens in towns were located as little half a mile from each other. Hope this is of some use this reply. Despite a long response

They can be heard upto 2 miles with great ease and effect, thou many was used across towns and cities, due buildings and landscapes. How ever, under the right conditions, you can hear a single siren across a vast span of space, 10-15 miles. But of course has little effect, no ones really noticing it, almost got to be pointed out. Obviously I can’t tell your age here. But If like me we’re not old enough to ever of heard one sounded in real fear of what happens nexts. Our Association of sirens perhaps come’s from films which often followed by a great dog fight. Or destruction of town. To which the heroic scene starts of people throwing rumble of someone to rescue them. Ok not all films have happy moments. But the point is from someone not having been affected by the following moments. I think we appreciate them as life saving devices. Perhaps if we heard one with consequences afterwards we wouldn’t like them So much

Minty's GT : Ah... many thanks for the precise info here, you certainly know your stuff... as I now recollect that the riveted data plate on the front of the motor housing read Gent Carter. Also that the motor housing was not a finned type, & that the siren rotors were not coloured red, but appeared to be just some alloy type of casting. I recall that a white powder residue was on the rotor blades that brushed off with a finger, similar to what we often find on alloy engine castings. The weight you estimate I would imagine is somewhere within what this may have tipped the scales at. But items feel heavier than they actually are, when the weight is condensed into a compact unit such as this. The main obstacle we faced, being that the siren was not actually located on the cinema roof, but was in fact on the roof of the building next door, being the old YEB (Yorkshire Electricity Board) offices. There was a large H iron girder which bridged a two foot gap, thus having a sheer drop between the two buildings, which we had to walk across in order to access the siren on the roof of the YEB building. Needless to say, balancing across that carrying such a weight was not really an option. It would not have been a pretty site if we had both 'come down' with the siren so to speak!. Pity I did not take a camera up there with me, as the mobile phone I had back then was a Nokia 3310 I believe, which did not have any such camera facility! lol.

@@galaxion62 mine was a reused ww2 location siren. We’re not entirely sure it sounded the air raids of ww2. There’s certain parts that are ww2 about it. But also some later then war parts. The closest guess. Is that it’s a recycled unit that failed to work when the Cold War warning system was being installed. There for modern parts fitted to it. It’s location is no secret. Was briers Ave in hastings.

If I'm not mistaken, this is a Secomak siren, not a Carter. The generously chamfered air holes and screwed in balance weights on the rotors note some of the differences. They look really close at first glance though and are commonly mistaken for Carter units.
@mintysgt
@mintysgt 3 года назад
No it’s Carter’s. But your not wrong ether. Eventually I will do a up close video and the restoration on it. These sirens are very uncommon only 3 known to of survived, it’s a genniune Carter’s motor. With like you say the chamfered ports, were not over positive why this is the case. Speculation is that it’s ww2 motor with later rota’s and stators fitted in the 50s for the Cold War I do agree doesn’t look like it. But when you see the motor housing and plaque your see it’s Carter’s.
@philhodges4608
@philhodges4608 3 года назад
Yes, you are right, it has all the signs of a Secomak, chamferred ports, balance weights etc. The motors were made by Brooks and if supplied to Carter had a Carter badge riveted below the Brooks motor rating plate. When Brooks supplied a motor for Secomak, the Brooks rating plate was replaced with an aluminium Secomak motor rating plate and the two rivets below fitted but with no extra plate. Even at that time manufacturers seemed to be sharing components. Unusually, this was definitely badged as a Carter so it is a Carter siren but you will find identical Secomak ones with different badges. Unfortunately as time has passed we will never know what went on.
