The A27M Cromwell cruiser tank first saw action in Normandy after the first ones came ashore on 7 June, the day after D-Day. The Cromwell was powered by the Rolls-Royce Meteor 27-litre V12 petrol engine, a tank version of the famous Merlin engine fitted in aircraft such as the Spitfire, Mustang and Lancaster. The Meteor engine plus Christie suspension gave the Cromwell a top speed of 40mph (64kph) which made it one of the fastest Allied medium tanks of WW2, and therefore ideal for reconnaissance. This vehicle is at The Tank Museum in Bovington, UK, and has been given the markings of the 10th Mounted Rifles, the reconnaissance regiment of the 1st Polish Armoured Division - this includes the division’s badge based on the helmet and wings of the Polish Hussars.
