WW2 Panzer IV Ausf.G - H - J footage - Panzerkampfwagen IV. pt6.
The Panzerkampfwagen IV was designed as the Versuchs-Kraftfahrzeug 622 in 1934 and went into production in 1937, and would fit the the short barrel 75 mm gun, and this would stay the same for the Ausf. A to F.
It would be a a support tank to be used to handle anti-tank guns and fortifications, it would work alongside the more numerable Panzer III in Panzer Divisions, but would changes it's roll in the later part of the war.
The Panzer IV Ausf.A production started in 1937 and ended in June 1938, it was similar to the B.W.I Prototype and production would stop after 35 vehicles had been completed, the Ausf.B went into production 1938 which had several changes to the A, with more frontal armour without a ball mount for the MG-34 machine gun, a new 300hp Maybach HL-120TR engine, transmission, single-piece hatches and commander’s cupola.
The A and B almost didn't have any external differences and it only had a improved modified engine, engine mounts, new turret ring and armored sleeve mount around the machine gun barrel.
The Ausf.D had numerous changes made to the front hull armour, and looked more like the Ausf.A, the ball mounted MG-34 machine gun was reintroduced and the driver’s front was fitted forwards again.
The Ausf.F or F1, first called the F at an early stage, was the last of the Panzer IV that fitted the short 75 mm gun, it would again see changes in it's suspension, with larger track links, with new idler wheels and front drive sprockets to reduce ground pressure, this was done because of the new additional armour increase.
The Ausf.F2 or the early Ausf.G started it's production in February 1942, after development started in 1941 to mount the Pak 38 L/60 into the turret of the Panzer IV, and a prototype was ready in November, but with new Russian tanks like KV-1s and T-34s, the 38 was dropped in favor of the new Pak 40 L/46 and a new gun was produced, the KwK 40 L/43 was fitted with a muzzle-brake and the first prototype was ready in 1942.
But in June 1942, the F2 was renamed Ausf.G, and this would pretty much make every long barreled Panzer IV, the Ausf.G.
The Ausf.G had numerous changes, like the elimination of the turret vision ports, the cupola was up-armored and modified, additional racks and brackets for spare road wheels and track links were added, the engine ventilation was improved. and some changes made to the armour, with an additional 30 mm to the frontal-glacis and changes to the armour to make the tank lighter, but it wasn't enough for the limited capacity of the chassis and transmission.
The late production introduced in March-April 1943, had the new side skirt armor fitted (Schürzen) to the sides and turret, and would also receive the new KwK 40 L/48, and smoke grenade launchers to the side of the turret.
From 1942 until 1943 1275 early Ausf.G tanks were produced and 412 later types.
The Ausf.H had the biggest production of the all, with a total of 3774 produced by June of 1944.
big changes made to the H were the new KwK 40 L/48, which the Late G already had, and the removal of the hull side vision ports, with factory-mounted Side and turret spaced armor (Schürzen) and Zimmerit paste. ( watch my Zimmerit video for more on Zimmerit. Video here • Zimmerit on Tanks - Wh... ),
new air filters were fitted, along with a modified cupola, with turret anti-aircraft mount for an extra MG 34.
The Ausf.J was a retrograde from the H, it addressed the mobility problems the Panzer IV had with the G and H and was simplify to make production of the tank easier, and make it more suitable for mass-production.
The electric generator that powered the tank’s turret traverse was removed so the turret had to be rotated manually. The electric turret traverse was sacrificed for an additional 200 liters of fuel capacity, remaining pistol and vision ports on the turret side hatches were removed and the engine’s radiator housing was simplified and Zimmerit and the Schurzen would not be applied anymore, and the side armour would be replaced by Thoma type wire-mesh panels.
Armour quality was also decreased, because of Allied bombings and plates which should have been face-hardened for the Panzer IV were instead made with rolled homogeneous armour plating.
A total of 1,700 to 2900 Panzer IV Ausf J were produced before the war ended.

Apparently, an lot of Allied battle reports insisted that their Sherman tanks were knocked out by Tiger tanks with the 88mm gun, a testament to the effectiveness of the L/48 75mm gun & the ammunition the Germans had developed. Unfortunately for countless Paanzer 4 crews, the Panzer 4's armour protection was inferior to the Tiger's.

A tank which fought from the begining till the end of the war.Less than 10000 PZ IVs from all types fought against 55000 T34s and more than 50000 Shermans and other types of tanks like Cromwel -plus the Allied air superiority and they kept Germany alive for 6 years!!A real fighting machine!!!......
@derekbaker3279
@derekbaker3279 3 года назад
Well, the PzKpfW IVs did not fight alone. The Germans produced large numbers of PzKpfW IIIs, StuG IIIs, Panthers, Tigers, Jagdpanzer IVs, Jagdpanthers, Marders, and other armoured fighting vehicles. But, one of the good things about the design is that it was capable of being up-gunned & up-armoured, so it remained effective on the Western Front until Germany surrendered. However, it may be fair to say that the PzKpfW IV was basically obsolete on the Eastern Front by mid-1944.
@teotselek1536

@@derekbaker3279 yes they were those types of German tanks but they were very outnumbered by the other types like KVs, IS1 and IS2 SU122 and SU 85s and SU100 ISU152 and more light tanks as they fought against M36, against Hellcat, against M10 against Crusaders and Valentines in Africa and to the Russian theater as well and against so many types that they totally outnumbered the German tanks!

But I was surprised to see a well dressed officer jumping off a Pz.Kpfw IV to surrender to an equally well dressed Russian officer! Please keep on posting 👍👍👍

Panzer Insight- I've been a subscriber for a few months now, but have looked at your videos rarely. Not enough hours in the day, and too many other things to do. Just saw this one. It's a truly first class production. Great variety of film and great soundtrack. Great narrative of yours in the long post. Few know that the F2 was re-designated as the G. From my perspective, that's one good sign that you know your subject matter- the first prerequisite of a video maker. It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words. How much more is this true of film? Seriously- you're telling history here. Not with words really, to be sure- but history nonetheless. In the course of military history (as you undoubtedly well know), some fighting organizations have stood out from the rank and file. Alexander's Companions, the Roman Legions, Napoleon's Imperial Guard, - and the German Panzer Arm. For what it's worth, know that you are doing a great service for the interested viewer. By telling a story figuratively speaking, "as it happened", people today can see with their own eyes this fighting force as it actually was , in both victory and defeat. Keep up the good work, and thank you. If you would be kind enough to provide the name of the music which begins at about 4: 30, I'd be grateful. It impresses me as quite appropriate for the video.

The third armored lost 640 tanks outright and another 700 disabled in the firs few weeks of combat. The Germans blew them away left and right. Add to that the poor suckers inside those Ronson lighters. The Shermans had aviation engines for speed and used high octane fuel. One lousy hit and there she goes.

You are full of dreck I checked the numbers. From June 6, 1944 to May 15, 1946, the U.S. lost 7,000 tanks. The U.K lost an additional 4,800 tanks for a total of 11.800. Add to that 10,000 spg's. And thousands of crew. I doubt very much the Germans were able to put anywhere those numbers in the field. 80% of German forces were in the east. When you are talking about the west you are talking about secondary German forces, ill trained and ill equipped. And yet the Allies had a lot of trouble gaining ground. Especially when they got closer to the German border. Westerwald, Huertgen Forest, Westwall, etc. Estimates are the Russian lost 85,000 tanks over the duration. The Germans again were not able to get anywhere near those numbers. B.t.w. the numbers are available at the Defense Dept. for anyone to check.

@@thenevadadesertrat2713 The Falaise pocket (The battle resulted in the destruction of most of Army Group B) and Wacht am Rhein were two examples of noble actions of the wehrmacht that came to no end (slaughter) due to practically non existent air power ... remember this country had the airforce to dream of by everyone in 1939. Oh just found this: Total losses reached an estimated 400,000 men. By the time they prepared to cross the Rhine in late March, the Allies had taken 1,300,000 German soldiers prisoner in Europe. check this out panzerworld.com/german-tank-kill-claims

@@clausbohm9807 Where do you get those numbers? Totally unbelievable. Once the Allies advanced close to Germany itself they got butchered. I grew up in Arnhem.. The ad hoc II Panzer Corps under Bittrich with the 9th panzers made mince meat out of the Allied forces until only 20% survived. Actually I think the 8th panzers were involved also, but I am not sure. But I do remember playing around those Tiger tanks that were assembled not too far from our house. Than there was the Huertgen Forest, the Bulge etc. The Allies thought the Germans were finished. Big mistake.

Its crew members fought against Soviet t-34s or American shermans for their lovely home family, their home, capital(Berilin), and their territories. Yeah, German started WW2. but I think All of the tank crew members, in British, Amerca, soviet union, German, France, and other countries fight their previous things. (I'm Korean so I'm afraid I did a great grammer!) Precious thing.

greatest respect for the men who fought bled and died in this chunks of steel. Why those germans always made that turret with double sided shoot trap (best shown at 1:50) ... was that the way of saving the material .... and ofcourse - PANZER, MARSCH !!!!!

Germany made the best tanks in ww2, amazing tanks but when you lose control of the skies all is for not, just sitting ducks waiting for a p ‐ 47 or p ‐ 51 with rockets to come by and tear open your tank.
