When he describes the face of the German soldier, I can’t help but think the German was on the methamphetamine rations they were given. That stuff was rampant on the eastern front.
It's kind of messed up, that in the west we learn about the eastern front through German perspective only. We've kind of absorbed the idea that the Red Army were just mindless waves of cannon fodder, without really questioning it.
@@rchave don't forget Germans committed some of the worst atrocities in human kind in Russia. And famous ppl like George Patton said Russia is the enemy. Western imperialistic ideals.. .
As a veteran myself I completely understand the fear of going from mid to long range engagements, to close one's. Its scarier, louder, and happens much faster. It's also much more personal at close range too, which is undeniably scary the first time but wanes over time. The longer that you spend in active combat, the more your self-preservation instinct lessens. What a legend, having his jaw broken, and then punched back into place. If there's such a place as Valhalla, I hope to meet this warrior and have a stiff drink with him.
