As the adopted son of German-Jewish parents, Wilhelm Simonsohn experienced persecution under National Socialism and nevertheless enlisted in the Luftwaffe on the advice of his father, who later died as a result of concentration camp imprisonment. As a night fighter pilot, he experienced the horrors of World War II.
Even at the age of over 100, Wilhelm Simonsohn regularly visited schools in Hamburg as an avowed pacifist and contemporary witness. He was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit for his efforts.
