Captivating restored footage of the dramatic sinking of Austro-Hungarian battleship SMS Szent István. At 3:15am on 10 June 1918, the battleship was spotted by Italian torpedo boats, and was torpedoed by MAS 15 nearby Premuda island in modern-day Croatia. As she flooded, she began to list to starboard. Hours after the attack, the Szent István finally capsized at 6:05am.
Film footage and photographs of Szent István's last half-hour were taken by Linienschiffsleutnant Meusburger of Tegetthoff with his own camera and by an official film crew. The battleship's sinking was one of only two on the high seas to ever be filmed, the other being that of the British battleship HMS Barham during World War II. Proceeds from the film of Szent István capsizing were eventually used to feed children in Austria following the ending of the war.

@@sergeant64 It's tough because you can see the ships everywhere, but I think that they were trying to stay on as long as possible to stay out of the water. They didn't have life jackets, just those preservers some would have. That's a long time to tread water in boots. That, and there is always the concern for sharks in these ordeals, always attracted to the blood from wounded.

If I recall, the fact that the Szent István, a battleship, was sunk by a tiny torpedo boat sent shockwaves throughout the world's naval powers (i.e. Britain, Germany, France, America, and even Japan) because they realized that inexpensive torpedo boats could easily sink ships that cost the Earth.

as the ship rolls over, you can see steam blow out from the engine compartment through what can be presumed to be the hole made by one of the torpedo hits there's a reason WW2 battleships had thicker torpedo protection and more effective watertight compartments, lessons were learned at sea and at war

I remember there are two camera angles of this sinking. One, seen here, and another from a very similar angle, slightly higher up and records the few seconds prior to the cut as the battleship capsizes. Both angles cut mid capsize, but each capture different intervals of the capsizing, enough that you can get the full thing. Found it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wG-8Mc9Y_Gc.html It shows both angles (unfortunately the film is mirrored). The other angle is in the second half, and you can definitely see snippets of this second camera angle (featuring a crane or derrick of some kind) in the shot, but never the full thing with the capsizing almost complete before cutting.
