Guys, it was foggy. The russian ship is a small destroyer on a minelaying mission whose name was not stated, the other ship is a german armored cruiser SMS Friedrich Carl. The russians managed to nail a shot at the bridge/conning tower of the germans, so the germans can not do fire control and stopped firing. The russians have nowhere to go because there's a minefield right behind them. But they chose to bet their luck at going through the minefield in their smaller ship. Here they managed to lure the germans to chase them and get into the minefield they just layed down. The germans are out of luck and hit a mine. The mine might have made their magazine/ammo compartment explode so there's a secondary explosion which were much more spectacular than the one underwater. ~Hope this helps to explain the plot of this scene so some people don't give biased argument due to the lack of information
Sukacita Yeremia Heh, I feel that you are much too late for any one to cite this in their biased opinions. Though I'm fairly sire you're correct about what happened here.
Thank you for elucidating what they meant to show... still, it's complete fantasy. In real life there wasn't a single Russian ship anywhere near the SMS Friedrich Carl when she hit mines off the Lithuanian coast and there was no secondary explosion - she settled slowly enough that all but seven of her crew were lost in the sinking. And this scene is typical of Russian war films nowadays - very well made from a technical standpoint, complete nonsense when it comes to tactics, and utterly propagandistic. After all, this is not really about ships, it's more about hammering in a message about the triumph of the "rightly and god-fearing Russian people" in face of the "decadent godless west". Especially heavy handed here with the whole Orthodox liturgy and the "David and Goliath" imagery. In fact, I remember watching this film back when it came out in 2008 and thinking "wow, this is exactly like those Soviet propaganda films from the 60s, but reversed, with the communists now the baddies". But hey, if it worked then, why wouldn't it work now, right?
Wingsofwrath сможешь назвать страну где снимают фильмы без патриотической пропаганды? США? Великобритания? Франция? Может Польша? Да все, абсолютно все без всяких исключений делают свои исторические фильмы с целью пропаганды! Такова реальность)))!!! can you name the country where films are shot without patriotic propaganda? USA? United Kingdom? France? Maybe Poland? Yes, everything, absolutely without exception, make their historical films for the purpose of propaganda! This is reality))) !!! Sorry for Google translation
Ah yes, the "everyone does it" excuse. Unfortunately, that's bullshit. Not only I can name films that don't go for empty propaganda, but I can name a few very good Russian films that avoid it: Баллада о солдате, Ива́ново де́тство, Они сражались за Родину and Иди и смотри.
Man that moment the guy goes up,took the gun, aimed it, ordered his men to fired it and nailed the german bridge was my all time favorite scene. (Although it seems kinda mean that he'd ask a weaken bloody guy to do it). Thats exactly type of captain/commander/leader i'd love to serve. The one that can get the job done when he needs to.
On November 17, 1914, 30 miles west of Memel, the Friedrich Karl was blown up by a Russian mine. The commander of the ship considered that he was attacked by an English submarine and ordered to go west at full speed in order to avoid a second torpedo. After 11 minutes, the Friedrich Karl was hit by a mine for the second time. After 5 hours of fighting for the survivability of the ship, the crew left the cruiser, taken by the cruiser Augsburg, which managed to approach the crash site. The explosion killed 8 people. This affected the subsequent operational activities of the German fleet in the Baltic: the death of the Friedrich Karl led to the curtailment of operations of large German surface ships, and the main base of the Baltic Sea Naval Forces was moved from Danzig to Svinemunde[1].
For those who ask the name of this Russian ship, this is a Siberian Shooter, “Hunter” class mine ship. It served for over 50 years and was decommissioned in June 1st of 1957.
I don't think you're right, their ship appears to be a Russian destroyer of somekind. It looks similar to Kolchak's actually flagship the Pogranichnik so that is probably what it is supposed to be.
@@user-si9sw7ux7f most Russian destroyers could lay mines, however a minelayer is a specific kind of ship purpose built for that role. Any ship can carry mines but that doesn't make them Minelayers.
The seamen were cheering because now they could live another day. The officers were quiet because they had sympathy for the other ship because they know how terrible it is to die out in the sea
And yet, they didnt obey common maritime law to resucue survivors, a tradition and duty that stil percists to this day. While it is a cool movie the battle is fictional, as well as the behavior of the officers and crew. Like all other navies the Russian navy would have ayempted to rescue survivors if the combat was at an end.
@@stefankoscielniak3611 you idiot 1) they had no sufficient space on that little destroyer 2) they couldnt risk enemy survivors to fight back and take the ship 3) war is war, nobody cares about maritime law or similar BS LoL 2 atomic bombs was released on CIVILIANS, the proof that in war everything is legit :))))
Damn this made feel like I was there and a German battle ship appeared out of nowhere and it seems like there's no hope and the relief of a mine hitting the side of the ship sending a chain reaction causing an ammunition explosion is beautiful
I don't know how good the subtitles are, which should be called up by clicking on the three dots in the upper right corner. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bUiuIYeSB6s.html - the great and tragic story of Admiral Kolchak.
Kalchak himself as a historical figure or the quality of the movie aside, I find the sailors praying a very powerful scene. Men are so small in war, sometimes so powerless.
American movies: man the gun immediately, maneuver like crazy and scream Medic the moment of injury. Russian movies: chill under fire, go straight, and still walk around with massive injuries.

I've read the book Jutland 1916, Death In The Grey Wastes. It describes in vivid detail first world war naval battles this scene puts it perfectly in pictures. The smoke, fire, shell splinters then the blood and death. None of us will have been there to see a dreadnought era sea battle for real it must have been hell. RIP the fallen of all nations.

However a bit strange that they could miss so many shots at such a short range. In WWI during the battle of Juttland the Germans could hit ships at much longer ranges. A bit strange the Russian ship stops firing after hitting the bridge. They do seem to be using some kind of smokescreen (don't know if this was the intention) something that would make a lot of sense. I have seen the movie several years ago and I remember as it being one of the better ones.
This is what ACTUALLY HAPPENED here, guys: 1) 0:25 German ship used SUPER-AMBUSH ability, this let german ship appear at point-blank range from enemy, out of nothere. Caught russian ship surprised, while they were drinking booze and spending leasure time. 2) 0:37 Russian sailors got -80% ACCURACY DEBUFF, and stupidly failed to hit anything. While german use GRAPESHOT shells at russians obviously, because from point blank they did not damaged enemy ship at all, but instead only made crew burn and run in panic. 3) 1:42 Russian captain was VERY surprised to learn, that if his engine stopped working under enemy fire, it means it was damaged. He even asked hit sailor to explain this phenomenon. Luckily, he used RUSSIAN EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT ability, and reduce engine repair time from 30 minutes to 15 minutes by pure force of words. 4) 3:10 Russian captain, while very freely and smartly walking under enemy fire, got concussion. He became very angry at enemy, and MANNED GUN IN PERSON. He asked drunk dirty sailor to stop sleeping and wake up, to reload a gun, because captain was unskilled to reload gun himself. 5) 4:25 Since shooting by captain in person gives +300% ACCURACY BOOST, he hit german ship and scored CRITICAL HIT for over 9000 damaged, killed enemy captain, ruined fire control, disabled all cannons at once, and crippled their engine -- every one knows how critical hits are deadly! 6) 4:45 Then captain used INSTANT REPAIR ability, this instantly replaced damaged crew with new ones, stopped fire and flooding and repaired armor too, and made everyone look very orange and happy. 7) 5:35 Captain decided that it is good time to train officers Courage Skill, and hold meeting with officers directly under enemy fire. This trained their Courage for +5 points. 8) 7:07 While going into minefield, captain activated BATTLE PRAYER ability, which gave him a 90% immunity to enemy fire and all mines. 9) 8:12 Captained used illegal game glitches and slowed down in minefield to avoid mine explosions. 10) 9:36 Yay, victory!
Russian navy actually did okay in ww1, they were among the first to use seaplane carriers to launch an attack and sink an enemy ship against turkey, look up battle of cape sarych and battle of gulf of riga, also the battle portrayed in this movie is based on true events, a German cruiser was sunk by a minefield laid by a destroyer
This is just another Russian fantasy, just like their Black Sea Flagship that absolutely was not sunk in combat or their devastated Crimean Air Base that absolutely did not lost a single piece of aviation equipment.
Some needs to recreate this in war thunder, since theres now German dreadnoughts in the game, and theres that one Imperial Russian Destroyer kerch that we could use.
man, the praying scene kind of had me on the thought that at least when the ship was near toward doom, at least the Admiral of the ship had that moment to convey prayers to his crew and the ship if they didn't get out alive.
Actually it's more like cargo-cult magic. They're casting protection from mines essentially, and supposedly it works. It's a modern russian cultural thing, rediscovering and reinterpreting faith after scientific communism.
@@1000niggawatt More than a cult, That's a great way to keep the moral in check during the dire situation, and to prevent sailor from mutiny or jump off the ship.
SMS Friedrich Carl was a German armored cruiser built in the early 1900s for the Imperial German Navy. She was the second ship of the Prinz Adalbert class. Friedrich Carl was built in Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. She was laid down in 1901, and completed in December 1903, at the cost of 15,665,000 Marks. She was armed with a main battery of four 21 cm (8.3 in) guns and was capable of a top speed of 20.4 kn (37.8 km/h; 23.5 mph). The ship served with the German fleet after her commissioning before being used as a torpedo training ship in 1909. In August 1914 after the outbreak of World War I, she was brought back to active service to act as Rear Admiral Behring's flagship in the Baltic Sea. Her wartime career was cut short on 17 November when she struck a pair of Russian mines off Memel at 55°41′N 20°11′ECoordinates: 55°41′N 20°11′E. The mines caused fatal damage, but the ship sank slowly enough to permit the safe evacuation of most of the crew; only seven men were killed in the incident.

Pretty impressive...only thing I wish they had done for accuracy is not sync the sound of the guns to the smoke showing. Even at 100 yards sound delay is noticable, and at naval ranges they are amazingly off.
The enemy ship is SMS Friedrich Carl, who hit 2 Russian mine in WW1, from wiki the German ship was kept afloat for several hours, which allowed the crew to be evacuated safely, only 7 dead of the crew.... think of it then you see the the explosion at the end....
