This is a walkthrough along the path from the main Vico Road down to the Éire 7 sign at Hawk Cliff, Dalkey.
The huge "Eire" signs were constructed during the Second World War so that any Anxis pilots flying overhead would be aware they were flying over neutral territory and not accidentally bomb it.
Though the Allies forces were given a guide to the numbers and were able to use the signs as navigational aids.
After the war many were robbed out and reused, or neglected. The one at Hawk Cliff was only revived in late 2018 following efforts by the local community to uncover it and restore it.
The sign itself is hard to appreciate fully at ground level, and is down a steep winding path. Care should be taken, as the walkthrough shows, the lower left edge of the lettering is very close to an unfenced drop to the rocks below.
