Helen Keller's journey began on June 27, 1880, when she was born to Arthur H. Keller and Kate Adams Keller. At the tender age of nineteen months, Helen was struck by a severe illness, identified today as likely scarlet fever or meningitis, which left her both deaf and blind. The loss of her sight and hearing plunged Helen into a world of darkness and silence, cutting her off from the sights, sounds, and communication that most take for granted.
