Sunday, 3rd September 1995 was a big day in Triad-area television, for that day WNRW-TV, the area's Fox station, became WXLV-TV and an affilliate of the ABC Television Network. The clip opens with color bars, followed by a lenghty sign-on announcement. After this, we are greeted by VP/General Manager Donita Todd (probably via tape), which announces the premiere of News 45 later that evening (News 45 would run only until January 2002, however). WXLV-TV 45 began in 1979 as indie WGNN-TV. The following year it became WJTM-TV, and around 1985 its call letters were changed to WNRW-TV and affiliated with the new Fox Television Network. Early in 1995, WGHP-TV Channel 8, the Triad's ABC affilliate for 32 years. was purchased by Fox Broadcasting, which resulted in Channel 45 switching its network affilliation to ABC (Fox would sell "Fox 8" to Local TV LLC in July 2008).

I worked at WGHP during this affiliation swap. It was a tumultuous time for both stations brought on by Fox buying up a bunch of VHF stations in 1994. The affiliation switches took about a year to do and as I recall, WGHP was one of the last of the new Fox O&Os to switch. The first year as a Fox station was great for us, they hired a lot of new people and expanded news production, but it didn't last because after the hiring spree came a hiring freeze and we weren't allowed to replace anyone who left. By '98 we were doing more news with fewer people than we had during our last year as an ABC station.

I remember passing by the station when driving west on I-40 heading over to Winston-Salem from Greensboro. Always thought it was a small building when compared to the size of the WGHP complex in High Point.

WXLV Channel 45 is a ABC Affiliate. Former Call Letters used to be WGNN, WJTM & WNRW. Former Affiliations used to be Independent, UPN & Fox.

With today's big competition with cable & satellite networks, nobody signs off now, unless they have to. Over the air TV Stations run whatever they can to compete with the massive amount of channels we have these days.

@@friesareyummy That is where you're wrong. Over the air TV is still popular with people who want local news that can not get it from the radio or newspaper. In a couple years, we will be upgraded to another new highly-advanced broadcast standard (which is currently being tested in select markets, but it won't be backwards-compatible with the existing standard): ATSC 3.0 a.k.a. NextGen TV.

In 1995 WGHP Channel 8 Switch to Fox. Channel 45 is your new Home for all your Favorite ABC Television Network Shows. See the premier of News 45. WNRW now WXLV.

ABC 45 used to be pretty good with their news. I loved the music on here for their news. Now it is done by Time Warner Cable. It is one sad station now. They just couldn't compete, news wise, to WFMY, WGHP, or WXII. All of them have good ratings and are well known. WXLV never was.

In 1980 ABC was on WGHP.

Donita Todd became the GM of WIS-TV (NBC) in Columbia, SC from 2008 until her 2015 retirement. She was responsible for the controversial firing of Ben Hoover in July 2014, he's now at the CBS affiliate in the Greenville, SC area.

ABC 45's not that good these days, back in the 1990's they were really good and in some ways better than WFMY was, at least in my opinion. ABC was just a strong network in those days, it's not as it used to be. I wish WGHP stayed with ABC though, it just seems more natural with ABC. It's good and all now but I just don't like how WXLV does things now. They are really lazy and cheap looking.
