The first block of the "Fox News at Ten" on WXXA-TV (channel 23) in Albany, NY, the area's Fox affiliate. WXXA had a news operation from October of 1996 to March 2013, and is now jointly operated with WTEN. I also have commercials included.
The anchor is Natalie Martinez, meteorologist Jon James has an early weather teaser, and reporting are David Wade and Stephanie Gorin. None of these people were Albany mainstays, with Wade leaving not long after for a career in Boston (where he is now), while Gorin returned in 1998 to work at her former employer, WPTZ in Plattsburgh. Jon James eventually worked at WNWO in Toledo, which also currently has a shuttered news department.
In the news 27 years ago yesterday, a Colonie man protests against trees being destroyed by his house with a "Mount St. Helens Eruption" sign, three teens break in to an elementary school in Guilderland, Gorin reports on complaints of cigar sales at the Saratoga race track (nothing's changed!), a waterspout forms on Florida waters, and San Diego faces a wildfire. Also at the bump to break is a teaser for "The Capital Region's Most Wanted," an America's Most Wanted parody.
Ratings were fair for the upstart newscast, which at the time competed against cable news (518ers could still watch primetime news on WPIX or WSBK, as WWOR was taken off some providers). Eventually, WXXA began to build its news department, with news at 5, 5:30 and 6:30 being shuffled around, and eventually, morning and 11pm news. At the time of the 2013 closure, WXXA had news at 5, 10 and 11, and from January to March of 2013 they only had 10pm news while they were consolidating with WTEN. Now, WTEN produces morning, 6:30 and 10pm news for WXXA.
The news theme is a custom WXXA music track by an unknown composer, and Larry Van Nuys voices the open. Larry also was the voiceover for Paramount's UPN stations and Real Stories of the Highway Patrol; he was replaced with a local voiceover (the same one who did work for Taft Furniture) in 2000.
