There's an Xarcade2Jstick driver already in the Retropie setup -packages, but users report it does not work with Pi3 including myself. i had to use this method in order to get the X-arcade stick to work correctly.
In this video, I show you how to set up And configure any XArcade Stick within RetroPie.
I'm using the X-ARCADE TANKSTICK + TRACKBALL
but this will also work with the Xarcade Dual stick also.

Commands-
Type git clone github.com/pet... and press Enter.
Type cd Xarcade2Jstick press Enter.
Type make and press Enter.
Type wget www.xgameroom.c... and press Enter.This is our custom version with exit game fix.
Type cp main.c src and can we get another Enter.
Type sudo make install and then Enter.
Type sudo make installservice and then Enter.
If you haven't already, connect your X-Arcade controller to the USB port of your RPi and type sudo reboot and press Enter one last time. This takes you back to RetroPie.

I want to correct something in your video so your viewers don't get mixed up. You gave the two USB cables the wrong labels. The trackball USB is the one already connected and the USB cable you have to connect via serial connection is for the joystick and buttons. For Raspberry Pi, PC, and Mac it doesn't really matter to know this since you'll be hooking up both USB's anyway, but when hooking the Tankstick up to game consoles that don't use the track ball, people may hook up the wrong USB cable.

ETA PRIME I'm having trouble getting my Pi to recognize my tankstick. I have the same joystick that you are setting up in the video but after I install the drivers, Retropie still doesn't recognize the tankstick, only the controller I have set up already. What could I be doing wrong? I've tried this several times.

im truly annoyed i follwed video exact 20 thousand times on 15 different versions of retropie it still reads as keyboard doent detect x arcade so this video is pointless proudut doent work

I have followed 4 other tutorials on getting the Tankstick working with Retropie. This is the most successful one. Thanks for your effort. My system is now working perfectly because of this video.

I see on their website, $50 off for 18 more days from 9-12-17 (the end of Sept). I'm really impressed. Wonder if the Trackball works with Arkanoid Revenge of Doh? Back in the day, you had to have a rheostat to play that correctly. I think the kids now call them 'spinners'. Anyway, I'm impressed. BTW, just a heads up for everyone regarding Chrome. I lost eta here and explainingcomputers as subs. They just disappeared from my list. Also, I started getting emails that youtubers had posted a new video or were streaming live. I never told it to do that. I just want the little rectangles bottom-right by the windblows system tray. So I go into my youtube settings and there is a thing to un-bullet, but it doesn't really say what it should. You go to youtube, click on your icon top-right and select settings and then select notifications and un-bullet " Send me emails about my RU-vid activity (except emails I've unsubscribed from)" by bulleting "Only send me required service announcement emails". All this happened when they pushed the v60 whatever update.

Everyone trashes on these things but I will be honest, I have one and the xinput chip installed on it and I love it now. Without xinput it was fucking awful but now that it actually WORKS on everything it is fantastic. It's durable as hell, and the buttons feel great. I have a Hori Rap 4 and I prefer this over it in terms of the feel of the buttons, yet people trash on it for feeling "Mushy". If this is mushy then that means one of the best fight sticks ever made is garbage lol.

I love my X-Arcade dual stick. Bought my first one in 2008. They also sell the board, sticks, and buttons separately as an arcade cabinet DIY "kit" for those that just want to install it in a full size cab.

was there any additional setup for the trackball? I can't for the life of me to get the trackball to work. I noticed you were showing games on FBA in this video. AFAIK you cant use a trackball with FBA, you need to be running AdvMame or Mame2003. I'd like to see a video of you using the actual trackball in the games. There seems to be no videos on RU-vid on how to setup a trackball in Retropie and I know lots of other people who are pulling their hair out when it comes to the trackball. If you made a video showing people how to setup their trackball I bet it would be a very popular video

you should build the pi inside the arcade case and have usb hdmi and power sockets attached, so its an all in one, theres a guy on YT that shows how he did it

I finally changed the sticks for IL(Industrias Lorenzo) eurosticks mainly because the diagonal is awful in the tankstick for some games like fighting games. Now it is so much better :)

Man that arcade stick is awesome! I could have used it last night on my Retropie while I was playing Final Fight (SNES & Neo Geo versions). My build is comeplete and I'm having a blast with it. The only thing I don't recommend is the "Old Skool Tools" NES case. It's extremely flimsy and not worth the $20 dollars it will cost you on Amazon. Get a better case & do an "EBay search" for Retropie Roms.

Hey just want to say I love your videos, I actually built my tank stick with a pie 3 inside. This video was really helpful only thing is for the life of me I can't get the trackball to work with golden tee I've tried multiple games on and no luck. I have it working on arcade classics, duck hunt and others maybe if you have any suggestions for golden tee

I was playing with the keyboard standard in retropie for the x-arcade. Last saturday i did the driver installation and is working fine. The sticks are analog or digital? Because before that it always registered like a letter or the arrows from the keyboard.

finally, i don't have to use the xbox 360 controller adapter with my x-arcade dual joystick with my pie. Fewer cables is a good thing :) Plus the select button will work again.

You can replace the joysticks with programmable Ultrasticks 360 so they can act as 2-way, 4-way, 8-way, diagonals or even fully analog joysticks depending on the MAME game you play.

Thanks for posting this super helpful to get my Tankstick working in Retro pie. Question thou my Trackball isn't working in games from what I can tell like you show in the video. Does it only work in certain emulators? Can I configure it anywhere like you setup the buttons in Emulation Station? I'm using the new Pi 3 b+ if that changes anything.

Some instructions by others make it a point to go buy a ps2 keyboard. That doesn't seem to matter with you since you're using a wireless keyboard. Either method works?

Nice. I own a dual and a solo. Too bad they discontinued the solos. Mines modded with an IL eurostick and buttons. I also read where a guy installed a INTEL COMPUTE STICK inside his tankstick. I may buy one and see whats to it.

Hello, this is a really helpful video. I've been trying for years to configure the tankstick. I just have a few questions that maybe you can help with: 1) what is the mapping for the keys on the tankstick that you use? The reason I ask is I play a lot of MAME games, and wanted to make sure they will all play correctly. 2) suppose I have usb gamepad controllers and want to switch to using them again - will the tankstick install mess up the keys they are mapped to? I wish they had one that came with a spinner also that you could also put a steering wheel on, that would be awesome and maybe even one that has 4 players but you don't have any problems with the joysticks because a lot of people here on RU-vid complain about the joysticks on this tankstick?

Hi ETA... Great video by the way. I am having difficulty connecting the trackball with the pi. I recently bought the trackball and installed it in an arcade control panel I built. I've tried going into the mame configs to setup the trackball but that doesn't work. Do you have any idea on just making the trackball work.I have a 20 button layout with an XIn Mo encoder.

Hey ETA - I’ve tried three trackballs and a couple of different setups with trackball games and have some issues with getting the input correct, particularly with ROMs like Birdie King. Do you have these issues too, and if so is there a decent correct or is that just the fault of the Emulators?

So if I just plug in my tank stick into retropie it should recognize it as a keyboard initially? I plugged mine in, followed the steps, and it says it doesn’t recognize any controllers when plugged in. I don’t have the trackball cable (got it second hand) but I wasn’t sure if that matters. Maybe I need to replace the usb cable itself?

i got a memory card from someone who downloaded retropie back in december of 2016. the linix version is 4.4.13 and yours in the video is 4.4.50. is this why when i type in the commands for the "git hub clone" it fails to work? i cant seem to get past that part. is my retropie setup to old?

Problem is retro pie is not detecting my xarcade joy stick . i have entered all the commands as per this tutorial and all command ran and completed successfully. do u know the reason why its not being detected by retropie even those i downloaded its drivers too by following your tutorial. please help... ETA Prime Thanks for posting this but I have a question. I tried this several time perfectly. The tankstick works going through the menus and selecting the system and the game I want to use. Once I enter the game it stops working. How do I fix this? Please help.

Thanks for another super informative video. You have saved me so much time. One problem, though. Although the Tankstick works great with NeoGeo, it doesn't seem to work with any other arcade games. Also, I've been able to use the track ball on any games, not even Atari Classics Missile Command. Any hints? Thanks again!

Good news. I was able to get the Tankstick working with almost all arcade games along with all consoles I've tried. I did this by clearing all controllers from retropie and starting over. The bad new is, I can't get the trackball working for any games whatsoever. Did anyone else run into this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. This thing is awesome! With a trackball it will be awesomer! Yeah I said awesomer.

Thanks for the tutorial. I completed the instructions however I cannot get the second joystick to be recognized in Robotron 2084 in Mame, nor does the trackball work. Any help would be appreciated. I did go to the input for that game and fear I may have messed something up, but I cant get the second player joystick or pad to be accepted.

All of the commands were executed fine except for one; sudo reboot. For some reason, it won't let me type this command in. I have to manually restart, but when the software is finally loaded the keyboard and Tankstick do not work. This has happened in two attempts. Any ideas?

I have the 2 player without the trackball use it with launchbox I also have the xbox 360 adapter to play pc shooter and fighting games I just wish there was a cable splitter so I could have both arcade controls and 360 controllers plugged in at once

Have raspberry Pi 4 4gig ram. I believe I have 4.7 firmware. Will this arcade joystick 🕹 work in a fast way ? What I mean is that many times there is a slight delay issue with most joy sticks and game pads? Is this fast enough to allow for correct timing game play?

I followed everything you said and the trackball is not working or being detected correctly I tried on several images and no luck I could get the sticks to work but no trackball action, Hell when I plug the Trackball into the Retropie that yellow lightning bolt appears, this stick just arrived the other day so I even bought a usb hub for extra power to remove the lightning bolt when the trackball is plugged in, the lightning bolt disappeared but I still couldn't get the trackball to be detected correctly. Please help me am I missing a command or something somewhere or you did something that's not being told to get the trackball to work, I tried with and without that Jstick2 update and no luck this sucks because I have a overlay on order from the UK due in this week for this Tankstick and now it's looking like I gotta send this Tankstick back!!

These back in 2006~ had huge input lag from the PCB, personally don't like the knockoff Suzo Happ joysticks and buttons. But when moded this stick is awesome.

I believe it's the PCB, at in 2006 they needed a PS/2(keyboard) to USB converter for PC, or PS/2 to PS2 back in the day and all the adaptors were laggy. I hope they have fixed this with a new PCB.

+Gustavo Soto Peralta Ok cool wondering why buttons would cause lag. I've been using the stick since Friday on my Pi and PC and haven't noticed the lag. I'm gonna do a tear down video later this week and see what's going on inside. Was thinking about doing a real happ upgrade but the sticks feel so good already I don't think it needs it but.. I might still do it just to do it LOL.

My left joystick won’t work in MAME on my laptop. I run the test program and I see it working but I can’t program jt as a control in MAME. I go to program it and it doesn’t register. What’s up? I have a tankstick with the trackball and 2 joysticks. My other joystick the right one works fine.

How do I determine if I'm using mame2003? I don't see where to install it and amuse that the newest version is 2003? Trackball does not work, I have tried everything including making sure there is nothing plugged in that would keep it from working.

Cant seem to get the trackball working. Even when Ive updated Retro Pi to 4.4. Is there a specific switch selection on the back of the XArcade Tank Stick that you have selected?? Is it only the Track option you have to define in Mame to make it work? Although when I do select the track option and then when I move the track ball it does nothing. Another thing, do you only have to have the USB cable for the track ball enabled or can you have both USB cables plugged into the PI at the same time for the track ball to work?

Sorted it thanks to a post below. If you have a keyboard that has a track pad installed, remove it. As it appears that this is taking over mouse 0 which is what the trackball by default is also trying to use. If you need to connect to the Pi for some command line then SSH instead.

Can someone help me? When I get to the configuration step, the system only recognizes 1 controller and not 2. Is there anything I can do to correct this?

A great video which made me go out and buy one, but like a lot of the people here I can't get the trackball working. I'm using mame-libertro (mame2003), I've tried changing mouse indexes in Retroarch. But am baffled, the trackball input works on a PC as a mouse, just not my Pi. Anyway you could help us with a video on the nuances of the configuration if it doesn't work out of the box?

Do you have a keyboard and or with mouse/trackpad installed? You said you changed the mouse index, but I'll go through a few steps that worked for me. Note - I *do* have a keyboard and trackpad installed which is seen by RetroPie as /dev/input/mouse0. So I'll show how to determine which mouse index is used by the trackbakk first. 1. Either F4 on keyboard to command prompt or SSH to command prompt 2. Type (without the quotes) "/dev/input/mouse0" and hit enter. 2a. You will get a prompt at the next blank line 3. Move your trackball. If it is using mouse0, you'll see a bunch of random characters. If you see nothing, that *probably* means something else is attached as mouse 0. 4. Ctrl-C to exit the test 5. If you *didn't* get the random characters in step 3, try again but type "/dev/input/mouse1" instead and then try the trackball to see if you get the random characters, then Ctrl-c to exit. 6. Note whether you used mouse 0 or mouse 1 as the trackball. 7. type "sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-core-options.cfg" and change mame_current_mouse_enable = "disabled" to mame_current_mouse_enable = "enabled" 7a. ctrl-w let's you search for and takes you to whatever text you type, so you can try ctrl-w and search for mame_current_mouse_enable 7b. To save the file type ctrl-o to "overwrite" the old file, then ctrl-x to exit the nano editing program. 8. type "sudo nano /opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch.cfg" and change input_player1_mouse_index = "0" to whichever mouse input gave you the random characters when you moved the trackball in step 3 or 5. 9. Note that FB Alpha doesn't seem to work with trackball/mouse input. If you have a game set to use FB Alpha, you might try with MAME-2003 or MAME-2010 instead. I recommend you use ROMs that work with MAME-2003. For example, for centipede replace the centiped.zip with the Centipede (revision 3) version. You'll probably have to rename it from "centiped3.zip" to "centiped.zip" Place it in your Arcade ROM folder to replace the old one, and press the "A" button repeatedly when you go to launch Centipede. You can then choose the default emulator for that ROM, and choose MAME-2003 - which works with mouse input.

My trackball wasn't working because of the keyboard which has a track pad. I unplugged the wireless dongle for the keyboard and it now works fine. Thank you.

i installed the d X-Arcade driver on my RetroPie and my dual stick works at %90 the problem is.... i have a weird glitch in my dual stick wear it the no mater what i do the side button (my select/coin ) on player 1 (left) reads it as d-pad left and i've checked all settings and all are correct i even check my stick and there is i find nothing wrong every time i press select or coin character move left can someone pleas tell me how to fix this ? to add : im on raspberry pi 3

I love my Tankstick. Why didn't you just install the driver from the optional menu in retropie?

mpholicx2 if I remember correctly it was under optional packages or experimental. It has been a while since I set it up. I'll have to check later.

+Paul Wakin The Pi3 seems to have problems installing from the driver menu. Tried it several times and my Pi 3 only detects the x arcade as a keyboard. This was the only way I could get it to work with the Pi 3. It's mentioned on the x arcade website also

mpholicx2 retropie setup -driver packages and install x arcadejoystick driver. But if you are using a Pi 3 it might not work correctly. A lot of people including myself have issues with that method. Give it a try and see if it works for you. After I install the driver from the retropie setup the Pi still detects the x arcade as a keyboard.

+Paul Wakin I also tried updating to latest retropie build 4.2.20. I really hope it's fixed in the retropie 4.3 update.
