Good afternoon, Drum Nerds. Hopefully you're all well, it sure has been a minute. Please enjoy X - JAPAN - RUSTY NAIL - DRUMMER REACTS. This was suggested by a few of you so without further a due, here she is!
You can tell the sound and style their trying to portray very clearly with not only the dress but the choice of each drum and cymbal size on the kit. From deep toms, to angled metal snares tuned in a mid-range - their sound/style is very obvious.
I hope you enjoy the nerdy rants and please feel free to suggest more and new bands or drummers for me to investigate. I love learning new things and hope you all do as well.

Yoshiki is the drummer and pianist. You can search for Yoshiki’s classical world tour to understand how amazing he is at playing and composing. The neck brace is very real. Damage to his neck from aggressive drumming for many years. The video you watched was from 1997 concert at the Tokyo dome. Check out live Blue Blood to get a sense for their harder side.

this is Yoshiki's drum setup diagram hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%A1jl:Yoshiki_drum_setup.svg anecdote has it that he used to be the fastest metal drummer in Japan when X was still doing speed metal at the beginning. He's a crazy dude. He writes metals songs on paper with notation (cuz he is a classical pianist, that's why the grand piano is there.). Maybe worth to chech Art of Life, though it's a massive song of 30 minutes but that's like the culmination of yoshiki's composing where both plays the piano and the drums. almost 20 minutes drumming nonstop. No wonder he has the neckbrace :)

1997. But the band was around from the early 80's. Neck brace was legit, Yoshiki had bad neck problems and decided to wear a neck brace to assist him to not move his neck too much. This was their last concert before they broke up (but came back about 2008 I think) although sadly the guitarist Hide with the pink hair died 1 year-ish after this concert. Nice video 🙂👍

Yoshiki normally likes to play an acrylic kit so the audience can see him, also he likes to hit hard whitch the acrylic kit needs to get the best out of it. Unfortunately this has led to him having nerve damage in his arms which requires pain killing injections before he can play. He offered to wear the neck brace because of the headbanging damage and surgery led Doctors to say he should never play drums again.

Also you miss Yoshiki iconic transparent drum set. He also is the main song writer for the band. The last 20 years he has being producing bands. But they did comeback with the band at some point without the original main guitar and the bass player since they had pass away by that point.

This song came out early 90s. How I miss them. No one had better crowd control than X.

Looks like the Tokyo Dome. This is a late-career performance of a ballad. Watch some of their concert videos from the 80’s, when they were young and hungry: super high-energy hard rock with an over-the-top visual style, like a Japanese KISS. You will understand the reason for the neck brace.

Not the best choice to check Yoshiki's drumming, but still thanks for the reaction. I would recommend "Dahlia" or "Silent Jealousy" (6-minute songs).

He now has a lot of physical problems due to his years of drumming and has had several surgeries. He has problems in his neck and wrists and elbows and has been advised to stop performing but he takes the pills and wear the braces and carries on. Having said that hi current work really focusses on his classical piano.

He had a injurie from headbanging during songs so even after his surgery he started using neck protection to avoid further injurie. Old fan of the band here, sadly the first time I hear of them the band had ended for a few years already in 2000.
