I am no expert, nor am I a drone or FPV hobbyist -- I'm a fixed wing airplane guy -- but I just recently bought the later and slightly simplified, slightly lower price-point evolution of this transmitter, the X-Lite S. Works fine with my FrSky Rx4R receivers. Bought it recently from Aloft Hobby -- one really nice customer-oriented company -- and it is loaded with Open Tx v.2.3.0, dated 20th July 2019. ps Nice videos, Nick. I like your focused, cut-to-the-chase style.

I agree 100% with your statements on the X9D. I hated it from day 1. To big and bulky, it never felt comfortable in my hands. Felt cheap and plastic. Love the small form factor of the -XLITE use it all the time. Thanks for all your great reviews! I will use the X-LITE until it stops working....

D16 will be supported, D8 will be supported with an external XJT lite module. Give it time.

It's here! And it sucks...? Talk about a misnomer...ACCESS protocol appears to be the opposite...? *Limiting access to operability and usage with existing equipment is not innovation to me.* FrSky, let's close the doors to innovation, circle the wagons and keep the renegades out, is that your plan? I was *Pro-FrSky* but not I am beginning to wonder if staying with an 'introverted" protocol developer is a good idea...

as probably only one of the people who have used it. When they have ironed out the creases it is by far superior to the previous protocols. But as you say its weather they start to ramp up the price because of that. essentially you will have a 2.4 version of what crossfire can do as well as 900 and 868. you have to remember its not going to be limited to this TX. All frsky Tx's will have this eventually

@AndyRC Don't you think it will take years to force the majority to ACCESS, even then we have after market manufacturers that will likely keep making receivers for the old protocol if the market is there. I also wonder if we will see deviationtx jump in. Frsky seems to be funding Opentx to some degree, jumper could get behind deviationtx.

I don't think it necessarily sucks. It's Frsky's common M.O. to release something quite a bit early before it's ready for prime-time. I'm not in the least surprised that they released it into the wild well before they've worked out bugs and backwards compatibility. The normal problem is their new releases aren't in stock anywhere for a few months before you can actually get one. Give them time and it'll improve. I'd think that a stable low-latency protocol will easily be worth the time required to load firmware into receivers. Otherwise, the stock original X-Lite is pretty much the same TX for less money and works a treat. Compared to everything else, it already fits my needs nearly perfectly and the Pro just adds features & upgrades I A) don't need anyway but B) glad they are (or will be) available if I feel like I want it.

@@NickBurnsFPV I guess only opentx can answer that. It needs to have all the functions it says it does before people will make the switch. But lets just say they start shipping frsky receivers with the access firmware pre installed. It can do both EU and FCC without flashing different firmware to it. If jumper stays with the old protocols then it would be an inconvenience flashing the old firmware back. Seen as openTX is open though I would imagine jumper can also make use of this access protocol as its open source? im not sure how that works? I can see openTX becoming closed source if thats the case.

I hear you on the Taranis 9D. I came from Spektrum (planes) and bought Taranis 9D for Quads. Hated from day one, never felt comfortable using it. Then went to QX7 it was much better. But the X-Lite has made me retire the Taranis 9D and QX7 which was barely used. Your reviews are the best. I watch you first, then Kabab :)

Ill buy it, I like that I don’t have to look through an infinite list of receivers anymore to start with this hobby. For beginners, this simplifies a lot, and thats what this hobby needs, newbees having a waaay to hard time getting into this hobby in a reasonable timeframe. So, having to buy everything yet, Ill go with this transmitter.

Interesting radio. I am flying on a QX7 Taranis and have fairly large hands. I haven't found a really comfortable flying posture on the QX7 yet. I am pinching mostly, but I tend to move my hand "around" on the radio, since it is not really comfortable for me. I haven't flown much, until recently I have only had a few batteries, so flight times were limited. Now I have built a toothpick and have 10 batteries, so I can fly more. Also started to use simulator, which can extend flight times. I have a 5" and a 3" on an older D4R-II FrSky RX, those are not going to have ACCESS compatibility. In my 2,5" and the toothpick I have XM+ receivers. Those can be updated to ACCESS later on. I have been looking into reviews of TBS Tango 2 and like the form factor of that one, as well. But I am not sure if I need the bells and whistles of the Crossfire system, since I am so rubbish as a pilot. It theory I could use the Crossfire Nano RX probably, but I would really need to motivate the cost of switching over. I have just bought an Emax TinyHawk II for my birthday, that goes on D8, need to see whether it can use an external RX eventually. My QX7 is holding up nicely so far, so I am not in the imminent need of getting a new transmitter. Plan to "use up" the QX7 first and learn to fly better before I look into a new radio.

i cant use these big transmitters like q7/x9 and achieve full stick movement for pinching. x-lite has been my only option. of course, i had to lengthen the sticks

I had the same issue with the throttle gimbal getting rough/sticky on the original x-lite. I opened it and found that they had put the tension bar in backwards on mine. There's a smooth/chamfered side and a rough unfinished side to it and the rough side had been put against the throttle. Flipped it over and it was perfect.

I will have to check it out. I find it weird mine got more sticky when it was cold out. But worth a look as I will have to open it to lube it anyways.

@@NickBurnsFPV I found that mine got more sticky with use. If let it sit there for 20mins it felt free but halfway through a race after a bit of movement it would tighten up and feel very rough. I'm assuming from the friction. BTW I also polished the plastic curve on the back of the gimbal with a dremel and some jewellers polish because the tension bar had scored it.

I'll stick with the QX7 for now. I've proper sized hands so I don't need a tiny radio. And this knee jerk reaction from Frsky to the pressure from Jumper is crazy! Nothing wrong with the existing protocol. As my nan always said "if it ain't broken........" If anything goes wrong with my QX7 I'll be saying hello to Jumper.

Hey Nick. It looked like the cap for the 18500 on that early model you have fit at the same "off angle" as the 18650 cap. I'd hope and pretty much expect they tweak as they go so fit & finish is better. Just my vote on the battery - I don't mind the 18500 at all as it's just a battery, they aren't hard to find or any more expensive, unless you vape you aren't a whole lot more likely to have a bunch of 18650's lying around already anyway, and I prefer the feel and look of the radio with the smaller size caps anyway. In my view, the 18650 caps are a bit of a crutch for folks who may already have batteries lying around, but it was designed with 18500 in mind and adapters make it a smidge hacky comparatively IMO. If capacity is an issue for some pilots, then simply buying another pair of 18500 is a perfectly reasonable solution.

The color scheme looks so much better than the original and that you can USB charge is wonderful. The new gimbel sound like a winner (I hope they offer those as an upgrade) the rest of it as it stands is a deal breaker. I'm not putting a module in to run D8 mode and have too many that run on D8 too consider switching. I like frsky but it seems they've made some bad choices as of late. Hopefully they'll be a Xlite pro V2 version in the near future.

I mean, I love my X9D and my X-Lite, but with this situation with the D8 receivers and the situation they are starting with Jumper, it really makes me not want to give Frsky anymore of my money. with that, I would go x-lite pro in this video. The gimbals should stay nice and smooth, the firmware has been developing rapidly and I find it the most comfortable radio I have used. I pinch, I have not spent more than a moment trying to fly thumbing, I am way out of practice thumbing....I am terrible at it now, I would suspect it be just as comfortable thumbing.

Its hard to be definitive, it would very much give you more options for receivers, range would depend on the receivers being used vs used in the future with frsky. I don't have a lot of experience with flysky, from what I have heard they work fine or at least okay. If we want extreme range nothing beats crossfire from tbs, we have to add a module to our radio and use crossfire receivers to accomplish this range.

Ordered this some time ago together with an R9Mini set. At least I have my still fine original lite. A shame the „Pro“ has to stay in the basement. I somehow understand why Frsky is going for an encrypted protocol to keep out clones. At the time ordering, I could not see that it is not backwards compatible. Worst buy this year so far. I hope it will get usable somehow without being forced to access.

I think the Jumper is supposed to be very good since it's a cheaper version and has everything what a frsky (idk what model name) has. I'm in no way in the hobby yet but I do prefer the controller-ish transmitters rather than the big transmitters. if u found out what's best for your tiny hawk let me know! Will be getting one at the end of this year probably

Vision I’m also new, I was wondering the same thing, but since you have no receivers yet, you can just go with this pro model, buy a compatible receivers, and you good to go with the latest protocols. Good luck with your choice, I don’t know about you, but making a choice with all the fc’s, esc’s, pdb’s, motors, etc, it hard if you want it perfect.

My x-lite speaker went out and the internal antenna doesn't work. So I pre-ordered this "upgrade" before they said it wasn't backwards compatible. Now I'm stuck with a $200 transmitter collecting dust.

Yeah I bought the replacement speaker but the x-lite is all plastic snap together and the speaker is at the front behind all the circuit board . Major pain to fix. It's my primary like you and I don't want to risk it. For now I'm just using an external antenna and relying on the vibrations warning for low rrsi.

I always thought the gyro controls on this would be awesome for controlling a camera servo on something like a shendrones geyser or a pan tilt camera servo on an RC rock crawler that's equipped with an FPV cam.

They're backing themselves into a corner. They think it's going to lock us into their products, but in reality it's giving us a reason to avoid them. We have other good options now, Frsky! Chill out or we're going to ditch you. Quit designing your stuff so that it's hard to use with other gear, or we'll just use other options that play nicely.

There might be details about their new protocol which cause problems besides not being very well-supported at this time (I don't know either way). But I think a major reason for the new protocol is to compete with low-latency systems that do exist, which incidentally are not Frsky's original protocol either. You can complain about not being compatible with the previous so far, but it's hard to complain about them significantly reducing latency. I am like most pilots and don't notice a latency problem in the first place. Eventually they will very likely work it out so compatibility is not a big problem, and since I don't have issues anyway I simply won't be an early adopter. Just give it some time and things should get much better. I consider this new release nothing more than a preview of new features down the road. Wait it out. Hell, I been waiting for two years for OpenTX to address the goofy, annoying power-off delay. A few months wait for Frsky to work out bugs and improve firmware is no big deal.

When Flysky release 3 different generations of afhds within 10 years that are not compatible with each other, no one bats an eye. When Spektrum release 3 different generations of dsm series protocol, no one gives a shit but when Frsky is about to replace a 10 years old protocol with a new one that has less latency and ota rx update and yet still let you use your existing x series rxs by fw update (none of the mentioned protocol above let you use new protocol with old hardware), people start conspiracy theory and immediately against it without any further knowledge. What kind of double standard is this??? I hate it when people say shits they don't even understand well, pretty much how every conspiracy theory starts.

This is very odd they put up a new transmiter and instead of adding features to existing they produce something that is not backward compatible with D8 and D16 basicaly unusable without serious updates and cash? Making new Access protocol seems in general to be a well thought idea to finaly solve some of the issues like binding etc. but why not expand but to replace?

I thought ACCESS was a pure software solution. Is there hardware inside that makes it not compatible with older recievers?

Fully compatible with older tx/rx's according to Frsky. Just need a firmware update.

What we really need is for Jumper to come out with a radio that supports all protocols, including somewhere to install a crossfire module so no swapping is required. FrSky have released this product with no actual thought on how people are going to use it. No one is going to want to replace their receivers just to use it, and certainly won't want to install a external receiver on their tiny whoops/micros that use AIO boards in D8/D16 mode.

hmm Jumper doesn't need this LOL so hopefully they will come out with a game style controller.. Oh well I'll just skip out on this and any future products from FRSKY.. makes me wonder what the future of Eachine and what not are going to do in the future.

I fell in love with the X-Lite and was flipping out when they announced the X-Lite PRO but when the buzz about this new weird protocol came out with encryptian and the ability to use 24 channels...."24 channels!!!!" why!?? came out I was so bummed out, I wont touch this thing with a ten foot pole unless they make it backwards compatible that is just BS

I did like that is was blue, I would have chosen a different hue, but getting there. I wish jumper would make this style of radio.

Not to my knowledge, still no native d8 mode. We have to use an external module to use d8 binding. d16 does work.

I understand the argument against ACCESS and the X-lite Pro, but if you're getting a MPM for DSMX anyways, does it not matter if it excludes the legacy protocols? I think this ACCESS situation will really suck for people not looking to buy a new radio anytime soon. I bet Frsky will start shipping receivers exclusively with ACCESS, even current models "upgraded" to ACCESS. You think they'll come out with an ACCESS module for existing radios? I doubt it.

I wouldn't expect many to need dsm/2 if they have a fleet. I would expect many to need d8, d16 compatibility. This is where I see the majority will have issues. Especially if one like micro quads, we use the smallest lightest receivers....generally.

Hi Nick, Thanks for the information on the new X-lite, but to me I won't be getting it. I have the original from last year and I still use it everytime I go out, I have the Realacc X-lite bag and I can snap on a quad and a number of batteries and go out flying. I don't think I would use half of the stuff this new radio will do. especially when it comes to that gyro, tilt to fly. Sounds like a cheap radio. And who would send out a new Radio if you can't even use it. PASS ON IT. Thanks again for your review.

yes, when the x-lite came out I suspect many thumbers thinking it wasn't suitable for pinching. Pinchers should evaluate if its pinch-able.

On top of everything else, it looks very cheap to me. That battery cover not being flush on one side is complete crap. Not even going to bother watching another video on this TX, no thanks. But thank you Nick for the review, appreciate it.

haha... i used to have quite a good opinion about FrSky, but the things they pull off right now are really pushing me away. This is all obviously profit orientated not consumer friendly. Really happy to be within the transition to CRSF :D

I am having difficulty with FrSky’s treatment of Jumper’s new radio. I wish gaming companies would sue FrSky for the infringement on their controller designs....or FrSky could acknowledge that they are the same as anyone else and being FrSky should not allow you to threaten companies with anti-trust lawsuits and to undermine your competition’s products. This only results in giving FrSky a monopoly based on stolen ideas and any innovation by others will either be super expensive, or never released for fear of being sued or driven out of business because FrSky can influence major vendors. Just like FrSky threatened Banggood about the new Jumper radio recently as mentioned above. I have always been a bit sceptical about FrSky in any case, mostly because they make products that are fine, but a much higher price than competitors in some areas which leads me to believe their pricing is somewhat predatory, not necessarily based on the features or manufacturing costs of the item being sold. Just my opinion of course. Thanks again for the content!

R-xsr has access firmware for download. BUT once you flash you can't go back due to bootloader change. Batch 2 firmwares include XM+ due out by June. not a fanboi here just someone with a $199 cool frsky paper weight.

I like the color and the charging capabilities but I like my current x-lite. The main problem is (and I know you don't get into politics) is the games that frsky is playing right now, breaks my heart, Bardwell and RCModel reviews has a video about the games that they are playing and why they are doing the new protocol, it is quite disappointing.

Nick the guys on RCGroups are legit and great to chat with. You can speak to OpenTx Devs as well as the Frsky reps. The RXSR is now working with an update that switches it over to Access. I really like the ergonomics of the Xlite form factor so the pro is on my list. The r9m lite pro needs to drop soon. That is the only thing holding me up.

If you can't stand your x9d, I'd be glad to help you out and take it off your hands. 😉 I'd hate for your shop area to get all cluttered, especially with gear you hate! Lol. I'm a little jealous too! I really wanted the carbon fiber look, but couldn't male it happen. Tell you what... Killl the thing you hate and just send me the housing of the x9r including the little watch/monitor, and you won't have to look at it any more. How do you feel about Frsky being a bully about the Jumper T16/ Horus x10 issue? I'm boycotting Frsky because &%$ you, Bullies! But I'll gladly keep using pre-loved(or hated) equipment with third party receivers. Also, one of the Frsky blurbs about "access" stated it's backward compatible...how and with what? If it doesn't work with the older accst receivers, maybe we need to explain what "backward compatibility" means to our Chinese friends?

I am not a fan of using technology to lock in customers, but it is a normal practice in my day-to-day job. I would like to think this hobby wouldn't go that route, but what I also think is the Chinese market has an ability to reverse engineer, that could prove to allow jumper or another brand to jump into not only the gap, but also the new protocol.

@@NickBurnsFPV from what I understand(JB video I think), the new protocol is encrypted. Apparently that doesn't make reverse engineering impossible, but it takes more time. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before we see the first third party Access RX.

I can see many new folks just going out and getting the PRO assuming it can do everything the standard radio can do and much more. Frsky has made a big mistake by not having this thing working with all existing equipment off the start.

What a marketing mistake. They need to send Engineering Models to guys like yourself for feedback. In a digital world, all these protocols can be placed in the unit. Why limit your market? That was a dumb move by them.

d8 is an illegal protocol (Edit) to sell in the EU so they have had to remove it. They are then leaving it to the user if they chose to use it via a module. This will be the case when they update all the other frsky transmitters to ACCESS

D8 is not an illegal protocol, it's illegal to sell it in the European Union is my understanding. But it's not illegal to use it or are the U.K. reviewers breaking the law? I don't think so.
