I hadn't watched the original show in years, but I remembered Chawls, being attacked in the final episode by Gyrich. He was dying but his space bird girlfriend, Llilandra took him away. I always took that as them being together his final days, over some miraculous cure, and that he did actually die. Of course, I was a cynical late teen back when it aired so that appealed to my macabre sensibilities.
Was gonna make this suggestion. There were a few recap vids on youtube that are worth the time to refresh in order to more appropriately make connections in what they continue with in xmen97
Easier to make a dude with claws looks cool than a tactical leader. Also probably a budget thing. Prosthetic claws easier to do than to do the special effects for optic blasts bouncing off the walls and stuff. Definitely did Cyclops dirty.
Cyclops is a good little boy scout. No depth, no arc, no mystery, nothing. Just the boring teachers pet. Also, given Wolverine is over 200, fought in multiple wars his entire existence, and been in specialized units, he’s got more tactical knowledge than any of them.
@@williammoore1980Yeah cause going headfirst into every situation with claws? Especially with Magneto around isn't showing 2 centuries of tactical genius. Scott isn't a boy scout. In the comics he does his own thing when he finds out what Xavier hid from him about his brother Vulcan and the first team who died.
@@williammoore1980and you're in ingrate if you really think that about his character considering Logan causes a majority of their team's drama and issues, also seldom grows up as a character himself.
The power sets are similar but completely different, Roberto's powers amplify his strength, agility and durability, he can turn his body into solar energy akin to the human torch's "flame on" ability, and like the human torch he can also fly, in the fox films they made him look like a generic fire guy, so I really like how they gave it a distinct look here in xmen 97, that said I dont think pyro has ever had a "human torch" form or has ever flown, he can only shape the fire that's why he always needs a source of fire be it a lighter like in the xmen films or a flame thrower like in the animated series or comics. Hope that this has helped explain the difference a little better.
So Wolverine, Rogue, Storm, and Beast are all the same voice actors. And it's 97 becuase the original show ended in 1996. So they're honoring the show by essentially picking up where it left off, and wanted to keep virtually the same design.
It's going to be crazy when she finds out what do babies actual name is cuz she was like I'm so sure they're going to name their baby Charles adventurous who was watched and just know the comics know
The writers who created this show knew exactly what they were doing. From the opening to Cyclops finally getting the respect that he was robbed of in the movies. I hope you enjoy this series as much as I did. With that being said, Been shouting "Magneto was Right" from the mountain tops for decades now and hearing him refer to them as "his" X-men: Quality. Chef's Kiss.
Main reason Cyclops is like this is because the showrunner mained Cyclops in Marvel vs Capcom, and wanted to show off why Cyclops was his "anchor". Mission accomplished =P
As a comics reader since the late 70's, this is the first time I've actually "gotten" why people like Cyclops. This version of the character is missing a lot of comics Cyke's problematic history, which always turned me off of him. Now I can appreciate the coolness.
@@yermatedave4930I’ve been reading X-Men since the 70’s as well and Cyclops has always been that dude. Lately I see problems with his characterization but that only happened in the last ten years. The new writers trying to make him edgy are kinda ruining him, Jean and Logan to be honest.🤷🏾♂️
This is the best Cyclops we've ever gotten in non-print media, but also the same can be said for just about every mutant in this series. They really did an excellent job with this entire team of characters.
The 90s superhero cartoons are iconic. X-Men, Spider-Man, the DCAU - those are the best depictions of the characters outside of the comics (and in some cases even better than the comics).
They're drawing from several comic stories from a couple different runs, to create an amalgam that is new, while also allowing them to fit in some Iconic Panels on the screen!
Don't forget, or in case you didn't know: The X-Men as a whole were modeled after the Civil Rights movement. Charles is meant to represent the peaceful ideology of Martin Luthor King Jr, while Magneto represents the more hardlined approach of Malcolm X. Over time the X-Men have come to represent many different civil rights issues.
Stan Lee said this wasn't initially true. He just got tired of coming up with origins for powers so mutants was an easy way to explain alot of characters away. It was later that the parallels were drawn.
This is going to be so much fun. No spoilers, but the show is better than you can even predict. The nostalgia factor helps, too. All I will say, is watch for changes in the intro, and who does the "previously on X-Men".
beware spoilers! people are terrible about that the comics are mined for characters & story ideas, but the adaptations are loose at best & more mixed up/picked apart (& well done) I look 4ward to seeing your reactions, it's a GREAT show overall. I've known Roberto (Sunspot) since the 80's, for example, so it's fun to see through fresh eyes
This show is a masterclass in how to do an ensemble. Every character had something useful to do. Frankly, they had more to do in a single 20-odd minute episode then the entirety of the live action franchise.
Roberto is a little "same story, different day" throwback to Jubilee and the originals first episode. Where they find her. So it's like we get the series back with a similar start.
Jubilee is a far better more audience stand in. i really didn't care for this version of him. can't say i know him all that well from the comics either. but most of the time he was on screen i really just didn't like him.
@@sakisaotome6753 Yeah, Jubilee was more relatable. She's just a kid thrown into a bad situation. Roberto was a rich kid who thought his wealth would protect him. I do think that's an interesting point of view though. He may not be particularly likable, but I like seeing the point of view of someone who usually benefits from privilege have to deal with having that stripped away.
One of the central themes of the X-Men, which was present back in the original series, is the idea that there's a limited amount of power in the world. If the mutants have more power, that takes it away from 'normal humans'; this concept has pitted humans against humans for thousands of years, all because some people can't share.
All I remember about this and Batman is how deep they felt compared to everything else at the time. Might wait till I re-watch myself, but looking forward to seeing your take in the future :)
I just watched this mind blowing netflix series, Nightmares and daydreams, this is sci-fi series, but not like any other sci fi out there, i think u should watch this next time
YES!!! I am so glad you are watching this!!! I really REALLY enjoyed this. The RESPECKKKK they put on Storm and Cyclops in this series was a BREATH of fresh air.
Good luck to Lenore Zann who Variety tips to win the Emmy for her VA on Rogue. It's unreal how good X Men 97 is. I was expecting a fun romp through memory lane but instead got a legit top tier 10/10 banger of a show.
Cyclops was always the fan favorite. But then a comic book arc happened that butchered his character, and then people started liking Wolverine. They tried to retcon it a bit, and the cartoon made him popular again, but he never really got back to full fame. - And yes, almost all voice actors are back. The creator of this show had this stipulation. Some sound a bit different just because they're older. - The intros change! See if you can catch the differences. - I'm pretty sure it's Xmen 97 bc it ended in 96 so it's like the season we would've gotten. One thing is important for you to know for this series in case you've forgotten from the original. NOT A SPOILER. If you had watched the recap special to prepare you for this it would've told you: - Xavier isn't dead. He got hurt, and an alien race took him to heal but the X-Men went with it so that people will leave him alone. It helps explain things like Morph turning into him. It's not as dark as it seems. As far as they know, Xavier is hurt, they don't know if he'll be able to heal or ever come back. But they don't think he's dead. Just the world does (I don't know if Magneto knows, I can't remember). - Also Cyclop's power are force based, so it pushes, doesn't burn (although it causes friction and can heat up). they get it wrong most movies and why he can fire it at people and not like... disintegrate them.
This show is such a trip and it took me a long time to figure out why. Usually when you watch or play things from your youth, you get smacked by how much lower quality or unsophisticated it was vs your memory. With this show, the creators somehow reached into your mind and pulled out the idealized version of xmen you remember, rather than the remaking what it actually was. Also, i somehow didnt appreciate it as a kid, but this was a full on soap opera, and i am here for it.
Saturday morning cartoons were really big in the 90s and most families would have 1 tv hooked up to the cable in the living room so mom and dad probably made you "take turns" choosing shows. The ads were the same between them and many kids liked the ads better than the shows.
It's awesome that you're a fan 😊 Years ago, in the 80s, when i first started reading comics, Cyclops was one of my favourites as well ☺️. I just always thought he was such a badass hero. 😊
I'm the same way: Cyclops, Cap, Black Panther, Superman, Nightwing when he's with the Teen Titans, Cosmic Boy, Captain Kirk, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, Optimus Prime, Leo in TMNT, Duke...there's something about the too good to be true, pure-hearted leader type that always intrigues me.
The season is based off of X-Men comics, but it's sort of a remix of a lot of different runs. So there's no one to one adaptation of a particular story line, but if you read a lot of X-Men comics over the years you can see where a lot of it is going.
Magneto was a different person at the end of the series. He found out he has a son and a daughter, Quicksliver and Scarlett Witch, well actually he has another daughter he doesn’t even know. The green haired mutant from X-Factor, Polaris is also his daughter. He did help the X-men against Apocalypse during the Axis of Time venture. Magneto uses his power to help call Lilandra for Xavier. Maybe Xavier saw some good in him.
I got choked up by the opening of the first episode. This was my all time favorite show growing up and I’ve said for years I wish they’d bring it back. Never thought it would happen but I’m eternally grateful for it.
Oh yeah!! If you watched the original show then you’ll love this show. They do Cyclops and Gambit so well in this show if they were some of your faves. And a lot of the original voice actors did return so it just adds to the nostalgia of it all.
Don't ever skip the opening theme song, because it changes almost every episode. Also, the animators cleverly left clues in nearly every episode as to what the final battle will be about. Most of us didn't notice the clues until our second viewing of the whole season. The clues were so obvious that I couldn't believe that I didn't notice them.😂 I still remember having debates online each week, telling certain people how unlikely their theories were, when they were actually right, lol.😅 A lot of thought and care went into the making of this show. Do I think it's perfect? No. The pacing in most episodes and a couple of characters being sidelined at times are my only real issues. But overall, I think they did a wonderful job with this series and am very much looking forward to Season 2.
This one episode made Cyclops cool again. As he should be. He's one of Marvel's best strategic and tactical minds. I think literally my only complaint is that Rogue doesn't really sound like the early twenties badass she once did. She sounds more like my 60-something chain-smoking aunt.
As much as I love daredevil, I really think this is the best show marvel has ever done. This first episode was a better portrayal of Scott than the original trilogy
Bishop was in the movies - Days of Future Past. In the final assault, he tells Storm to charge him with a lightning attack. Its actually one of my favorite scenes lol.
You know, people who mainly came to the Marvel characters through the movies don't really have a fair impression of just how soap opera-ish their personal stories can really go in the comics... there just isn't time in your average film. Now that they're doing shows, some of that has crept back into the adaptations... but this series is where that side of the Marvel characters truly breaks out in all its glory!
Woohoo Angela is watching this masterpiece Her love for Cyclops will be rewarded I can only wait for her thoughts and reactions to the coming episodes 😊
A lot of the voice actors are returning from the original series. Storm, Wolverine, Rogue, and Beast are all original VAs coming back. Jubilee's original VA is in the show but not as Jubilee (well, not quite, anyway). Some of the original VAs have unfortunately passed away (Cyclops, Magneto) or were unable to reprise their roles for other reasons like age, unable to match performance, unavailable etc (Charles, Gambit). All in all, though, voice cast is still great. Many of the stories in both this and the original 90s iteration of the show are based on X-Men comics going all the way back to the 70s, though pull particularly heavily from the 80s (for obvious reasons) when the cast from the TV show was also the main lineup in the comics (it's shifted/grown a lot since their introduction in the 60s). There've been dozens of ongoing X-related titles over the years, and these are all remixes or reinterpretations of the stories from the comics rather than direct 1:1 retellings, so it's difficult to pin down to any one comic, but long time fans of the comics will be able to pick up on what inspired particular plot elements. X-Men '97 pull in stuff from the early 80s Uncanny X-Men arcs all the way through the early 00s New X-Men arc, for example (Highly recommend reading Grant Morrison's New X-Men books, or any of Chris Claremont's 80s vintage Uncanny runs if you want to see the inspiration for '97). Anyway, this series absolutely nailed it. Just the right mix of childhood nostalgia with adult updating and thoughtful storytelling.
These issues are based on comics storylines, but there's not a 1:1 correspondence. Like the original animated series, one episode will cover 5-20 issues of comics.
I’m glad this show finally puts respect on Cyclops & just the rest of the X-men that the movies didn’t really focus on. Ugh love this show & Gambit was always my fav X-men from the original show & other stuff
This is probably the best thing Marvel has done since Infinity War..... And if I have to nitpick, probably since before that. At the beginning you tell that you didn't like Wolverine and you liked Cyclops, something that most of us didn't: yes, in the 90's series, Cyclops was the "good boy" of the team for me, he wasn't very interesting. But not only him, there were other characters that didn't appeal to me as much, like Jubilee or even Gambit. That's why I feel like the biggest strength this series has is that ALL the characters are relevant. They all have their moment to shine, they are all well constructed and it generates your interest in watching them. I even found myself really enjoying seeing Jubilee on screen! I thought nothing was going to get me more excited this year than the second season of Arcane (the trailer is out, by the way), but X-Men97 really raised the bar.
As a fellow Scott Summers Appreciator and former twice yearly Costume Wearer (time comes for us all, especially the baldies) this episode gave the best non-comics Cyclops and Storm…ever?
I got emotional as well. This show is the reason I ever started reading comics. And these voices are still the ones I hear in my head whenever I read an X-Men comic.
I’m loving the speculation for the rest of the series and all I have to say is buckle up girl, this was the best thing Marvel has put out since No Way Home. I’m hoping these aren’t once a week.
I too has happy Cyclops finally got his due in this iteration. Thing about Cyclops is he not only has to stop bad guys but also think of how it looks on mutants with their actions. While Xavier does have the ideas and hope being on the frontline Scott is upfront of what is really going on and that is the difference between him than Xavier.
Roberto da Costa is Sunspot he was in X-Men Days of Future Past played by Adan Canto from the TV series The Following staring Kevin Bacon, and the Kiefer Sutherland series Designated Survivor.
Roberto is borrowed from New Mutants, and while this isn't a direct story transfer, the entire season incorporates multiple classic comic storylines slightly differently (for instance Bishop and Morph wouldn't have been added to the team yet for some of them). We're given a truncated comic event greatest hits selection, essentially. Grab the tissue box.
Magneto is indeed a violent extremist terrorist, and the "worst of rhe mutants"... that suffered the worst of homo sapiens in the holocaust, losing his entire family and then the continuous losses in his life... i love his character so much.
Happy to see you watch these! Easily some of the best writing and acting Marvel has ever put out. They do pull from several great comic arcs so brace yourself!
Cyclops has always been my favorite X-Man. I'm so happy he is finally getting the respect he deserves. This episode went a long way to undoing the damage the Fox movies did to him.
One of the benefits of doing this series 25+ years later, they can pull from the comic's histories since 1997. Cyclops is very far from being a boy scout character anymore.
X-Men '97 adapts and remixes multiple stories from the comics leaving readers able to participate events but not fully predict the results. Most noticeable might be how different characters are slotted into roles formerly occupied by those who might have taken too much explaining. Overall though, this show feels closer to the comics than any other video iteration. I'm honestly anxious to see if some of your views informed by cartoons and movies are shattered. :)
Cyclops: Storm, give em the forecast! Sentinel: Omega level threat detected! Me: In 20 minutes, they blew all the movies out of the water!! MY X-Men are back!!!!
I just love that, almost universally TO A PERSON, everyone seems to agree that...this is the best thing Marvel has EVER put to screen, and through the lows, but especially the highest of highs, that's saying A LOT. :) ANd I couldn't agree more. It's near perfect.
Hi Angela, excellent reaction as always! 28:54 No spoilers, but letting you know as a franchise fan who read the ~10 monthly X-Men comic titles in the '90s that X-Men 97 DOES play to nostalgia by incorporating characters/events from several '90s storylines. I think it was a good move since many people who watched the original animated series back then are likely to have read and remember those comics too, but the story progression is nowhere near identical so it was still new to me. As someone who watched X-Men on TV but couldn't remember where the plot left off decades ago, I feel like X-Men 97 does a fantastic job getting old fans back in gear with old characters while not requiring any previous knowledge from new fans. Hope you enjoy the rest of the season!
