regarding jubilee firing "fireworks" we find out that in the comics "fireworks" is just what she calls it. her power levels are vastly more powerful than even what we saw in the motendo episode. in fact if you noticed during episode 3 when the monster came out of the tv she literally bisected it from crown to sternum. but we find out in the comics that jubilee detonates matter at the subatomic level. if she wanted to (and she has) sje could literally cause nuclear level explosions
Interesting side note, the older Jubilee was voiced by the original actor who did Jubilee in the original series. It was cool how similar both actors sound like each other.
This adaptation of the Madeline Pryor/Goblin Queen story arc is honestly FAR better than in the comics. Originally Madeline broke bad not because of Sinister’s influence, but from Scott abandoning her for the real Jean. Which made Scott look horrible because while Madeline is a clone she’s still the mother of his child and their feelings for each other were in fact real. And I loved that in the end Madeline was freed of Sinister’s control and will now live her own life free to do what she wants. It was also a great idea to have their memories merge so that no one knows who was who during when. Also I loved her costume redesign. Instead of looking like it was designed by a horny teenage boy she looks like an actual witch. And I’m still surprised that the animators made the nightmare scenes look like if Guillermo Del Toro did a remake of The Thing.
In the comics, Lifedeath was a Part 1 and 2, separated by several months of comics in between. Storm and Forge were getting a lot of development over a long period of time. '97 speed runs through all of these comic storylines (the Madelyn Pryor storyline was told over a whole year's worth of comics. A lot of comic readers have complained about the pacing of the show, because a lot of great character development is getting left out. For example, in the comics, Storm not only challenged Scott for leadership of the X-Men while without her powers (and won), she also lead the X-Men for about 3 years, powerless. But the average viewer won't ever know how great of a leader she is if '97 is the only thing they've seen of her. Madelyn gets shortchanged as well. Because they cut out so much of her story, new audiences have no idea why she is called the "Goblin Queen". In the comics, Madelyn makes a deal with demons in hellish dimension to gain her magic powers and rules over a corner of that dimension (Limbo). Her rival in that demension was the little blonde girl with the sword that Morph turned into (her name is Magik, and she's Colossus' little sister). In my honest opinion, I wish that they'd stuck to only 1 or 2 of these storylines and fleshed them out over the course of the whole season. The 'Motendo' episode was definitely based on the old X-Men arcade. Interestingly, the 6-player arcade was itself based on the failed original pilot film that was shopped around in the hope of greenlighting the original show. It's called "Pryde of the X-Men", and I would love to see you all react to it. The lineup was Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat), Colossus, Storm, Scott, Wolverine, Dazzler, and Nightcrawler. The tone was much more campy, which, I think, is why the pilot was rejected by the studio, and probably the main reason for them going in such an edgier, more mature (for that time) direction for the original show. You can find the pilot film here on RU-vid (it may be on Disney+ too; I don't know). I can't wait to see you reactions to Episode 5. It was the storyline that the showrunner (Beau DeMayo) focused his presentation on during his interviewing process with Kevin Feige. Kevin said that he'd only greenlight '97 if they could get the original voice actors and the original theme song back, which they did.
@@NathanielWhitehead-vg3lc I think if X-Men 97 had the proper budget to flesh things out it would have. Whilst it was targeted toward a sense of nostalgia and retelling for older fans, It was essentially almost like a pilot test run (even though older gens knew exactly what the show is) for today’s younger audience and generations to see if it had more potential to fly or if it would sink. Maybe if season 2 and 3 are also successful, we may get more fleshed out development for future seasons. To that, I also realise it would be almost too tedious to try fit long comic based storyline’s to into limited allotted timeframes.
@reginarichards6261 Exactly. That's why I believe that they should focus on fewer storylines at one time. We already know how expensive and time-consuming animated shows are. If they can't increase production lengths, then at least reduce the amount of "juggling" they are trying to do.
i think that a little ambigiousness about why maddie choose those names for herself is a fair trade for an honestly much better story about maddie. this version is by far the better story we don't need scott to suddenly become a jerk to her and just leave her because jean came back and ignores their entire marriage. that said Sinister makes multiple allusions to Maddie being a Queen during their talk over the baby monitor. that suggests that she choose the name Goblin Queen because its something Sinister programmed into her. just as we can presume that sinister must have referred to her as maddie before he programmed her with Jean's memories. people are belly aching because they wanted to see more of their favorite storylines. and i totally get it. but a streaming show is just never going to give them that. maybe a full length televised show with 24 - 26 episodes we can give them the time to slowly develop the story and characters but thats not what this is. streaming series are generally much much smaller. xmen 97 is actually one of the longest streaming shows i have ever seen and thats just 10 episodes. that said if they continue to go through previous storylines this fast they are going to run out of comic storylines sooner rather than later.
Mojo appeared twice in the original series. the opening credits shows you scenes from those episodes. the first episode he appeared in was the season 2 episode 11 episode titled Mojoverse where mojo captures the xmen minus jubilee and gambit and brings them to his universe to fight on his tv universe. he appears again in season 3 episode 10 "Longshot" where mojo's main star Longshot decides he's had enough of working for mojo and tries to escape. this is the episde where Jubilee meets Mojo for the first time. i would say that Motendo is the only "filler" episode of this series. it is used mainly to give us more of Jubilee who doesn't get enough attention in my opinion and to set up the split between lifedeath 1 and lifedeath 2. lifedeath was split in two because that is how it was done in the comics. there was a multi-month gap between lifedeath 1 and lifedeath 2. so as a nod to that they mirrored that separation in xmen 97
It’s fun knowing the storyline in the comics of Madelyn Pryor. A lot of hints/signs that Jean is a clone before it’s actually revealed. And while it’s not stated when the swap happens, it’s at the very least a year.

Jean Grey most likely got swapped with the clone during her and Scott’s honeymoon during season 2 of the show where he kidnapped them. He basically tricked them into a too good to be true honeymoon vacation package on a secluded island for mutants to relax. Mister Sinister is an iconic villain from both the show and comics same with Mojo. In the original series Sinister kidnapped Jean and/or Cyclops quite a few times because he wanted their DNA. He is a scientist from Victorian London times and Apocalypse used alien tech to alter his DNA to work for him. Sinister powers are shape shifting, regeneration (so he is super hard to kill), Telepathy & Telekinesis (hence all of the scary nightmare visions), basically immortal. MOJO also appeared in iconic X-Men Animated Series episodes. He basically lives in his own universe where he enslaves beings who are addicted to his gladiator-like television shows and movies. He can mind control, travel different dimension, has energy blasts, etc. His whole schtick is trying to collect different beings to get good ratings with his enslaved population
That is certainly one theory, but we also see blank memories of Jean as far back as season 1 of the original series. so there is literally no way to know for sure when it happened. just because that was the first see saw he had the opportunity doesn't mean he couldn't have done it at any point before. it's even possible that Maddie is the only version of Jean we have ever seen until this episode. that is why the team made it so nebulous not knowing makes things so much more complicated.
@@sakisaotome6753 My guess is that it happened during the "Beyond Good and Evil" arc. That's when Sinister was able to time travel using the Access of Time, after Apocalypse took Cable's time-traveling device. They asked him why he was helping Apocalypse. Sinister said he liked the idea of starting an experiment, hopping a portal into the future to see how it comes out. I think this is when he grew her it it's likely he swapped the Jean who was held captive at the Access of Time (the one in the wedding dress), knowing that baby making season would begin soon after, since that's when they were officially married. The time stream had to play out, all events that lead to Apocalypse gaining his time-travel ability...., so swapping her before then might have endangered the time stream. He could grow her, but not put her into play before the events of Beyond Good and Evil.
Sinister programs his clones and the people he makes them from, he kidnapped Morph to steal his genes and sent him back brainwashed to destroy the X-men from inside. Because Jean and Maddie share their memories because they are basically the same person, we never really know when the switch was made. The Goblin Queen appears in the Inferno storyline in the comics if you want to look into it. The Mojoverse is another storyline, we meet Mojo, he’s the ruler of another dimension, imagine a universe based off tik tok. He kidnaps the X-men to force them to be on his tv shows in his universe to get viewership. He tries to kill them to get more views. Spiral(Rita Wayword), the woman with many arms is a human who was brought to the Mojoverse when she fell in love with a character named Longshot a mutant with the power of luck that only works if his intentions are good. Mojo made Longshot forget Spiral and she was trapped in the Mojoverse alone and it twisted her, made her angry and it turned her evil. She hates Longshot because he left her in the hands of a maniac and he did things to her body and mind and she holds him responsible, she ends up becoming one of Mojo’s foot soldiers in his twisted plans for the X-men. The Adversary is a demon the X-men faced in the comics, it killed them in a huge fight in Texas that cost them their lives. A goddess named Roma was watching the fight and thought the X-men were so courageous that they should not die, she resurrected them and made it so that technology could not see them so that they could go off and operate in secret to do good in the world, another storyline in the books. The X-men go off and set up shop in the middle of the desert and no one knows they are still alive, this brings in the cyborgs that find them and start hunting them, again not seen in this season but possible for season three which is being written now while two is in pre-production now that they have a new show runner.

In the comics Sinister is a geneticist, he’s been around since the 1800’s and his specialty is messing with the genes of mutants to perfect them into the perfect mutant. He’s kept himself young by stealing parts of mutant’s genes (Spoilers). He planned Scott and Jean to make Nathan, he was supposed to be the perfect creation, his power would be unmeasurable but the process was interrupted and instead of merging with the techno-virus, Nathan (Cable) became infected and was never able to reach his full potential because he has to focus his powers on keeping the virus from consuming him whole and turning him into a techno-organic member of the Phallanx, that’s the race of beings that the virus comes from. This will all make sense by shows end 😉. Cable has a clone of himself that isn’t infected with the virus, his name is Stryfe and he is evil, we don’t get to meet him…yet. Madelyne Prior is a clone of Jean that Sinister used to trick Scott into making a baby with, in the comics it’s done differently. Scott leaves the X-men, Jean was thought dead, he meets this woman that looks so much like Jean and they get married and make a baby in Alaska, the baby is Cable. Scott finds out she’s a clone, Jean is alive and they end up in Asgard, Storm becomes a thunder god but that’s all in the books not the show. Jean didn’t give birth to Cable but she has Madelyne’s memories of his birth, she feels what she felt and in the end, feels love for Cable, he is her son in her heart, mind and soul and she will wreck anyone that threatens him or Scott (spoilers). You will love this show, so many stories from the comics are woven into this first season, it made the 14yo in me squeal, that’s when I started reading comics, forty years ago.
