Fassbender speaking french, english, spanish and german in the same movie. Plus the masterclass in acting. This man is something else. He's on par with the likes of Christoph Waltz and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Hh also spoke Polish in one of the X men movies (not sure if it was this one). And tho his Polish wasnt that good, it's still impressive, given how hard the language is for non native speakers.
This should have been the whole movie lol. When I saw this, I didn't care about the X-Men anymore. I literally just wanted to see Magneto going John Wick on Nazis lol. Already, an infinitely better movie than what we got :P
The appeal is due to many of us wishing we were capable of that level of cruelty towards evil. Without that ability, evil thrives. To counter evil we must be capable of cruelty without becoming a cruel person.

Magneto is by far one of the most complex and nuanced villains ever. He's sympathetic, has a reason for his hate, but often goes to far. You quickly go for rooting for him, to horrified, then back. You just never know which Magneto you get.
Which would explain why it was hard for me to get into X Men movies as a kid because there were always times when I didn't know whose side Magneto was on

I love how the atmosphere had a complete 180 when Erik said "they didn't have a name". Going from "just sitting there, doing stuff and enjoying life" to "our life is in massive danger"
@Fandy Ricky Those imprisoned in concentration camps were tattooed with a serial number and were forbidden from identifying themselves by name to guards. Instead they had to identify themselves by their serial numbers. Magneto has one such number tattooed on his arm. In effect, their names were taken from them. Those two men were in the picture with Shaw, the man who killed Magneto's mother in a concentration camp. They knew what it meant when Magneto said that his parents were also from Dusseldorf and did not have names.
It always bothers me that the guys immediately realize where this is going, but instead of any self-preservation, they go "we should finish our beers and see how this plays out, this guy seems pretty chill!"

I wish there had been a solo Magneto movie where he just hunts down Nazis and evil mutant Nazi sympathizers. This is my favorite scene from this movie! It leaves me wanting more of this!
"Blood and Honor. Which do you care to shed first?" "Please, we were under orders!" "Blood, then." I love that the implication of this is that they already shed their honor being "under orders".
The honor part is that he wants them to admit what they did by choice and it was wrong. They don’t shed it because they say it was just orders, trying to appear better than they are. It’s a facade of having honor, and refusing to admit they don’t have any. So they shed blood instead.
So many impressive things to talk about in this scene, and while its small potatoes in comparison to others, that knife throw and retraction gets me every time. So badass.

It's like starting current day LeBron in a college basketball game. The obvious performance difference is similar with Daniel Craig playing Joe Bang in the movie "Logan Lucky". His interpretation and performance of his character is just next level compared to everyone else in the movie.
We have both Magnetos and both Xaviers basically some of the best actors who have ever lived. As amazing as Fassbender is, how can you NOT mention Ian McKellen?
For all the non-Argentinian people watching this. This is not Villa Gesell, this is definitely a place near La Cordillera de Los Andes, it might probably be Mendoza or any province on the west side of the country. But actually, Villa Gesell is a city placed on the eastern cost of the country. Anyways, this scene is great and Michael Fassbander is a hell of an actor

This scene is terrifying, only because it shows so much as to why Eric 'became' Magneto. He doesn't even flinch when he says his parents' name was taken from them and turns his arm over to show his code. That's something he dealt with mentally a long time ago. He just needs revenge. Being a mutant is different.
Why hasn't Mathew Vaughn directed any other X-Men films? This could have been a scene out of an Oscar winning wartime period drama. The setup, the tension, the blocking, and the angles are all superbly thought out. I like all the X-men films, but First Class was a step above them all, especially the first half which felt like a 60s espionage movie. Magneto's theme music is awesome too.
Preach. This is by far my favorite X-men movie. No one does flow and glamouros action like Matt Vaugh, while still doing justice to the characters. His pacing in this movie was perfect.
@@niero4201 He was the original choice for directing Last Stand and the first Wolverine solo movie (X-Men Origins). And, also, why not? His action movies are incredible and he really does great superhero movies with real-world politics often playing a major plot point like Watchmen or Dawn of Justice.
Still think this was the best of all the X Men so far. It fleshed out so much of the back story for Eric and Charles and Mystique. This was such a great opening!
I like the small detail of the bartender not having his finger on the trigger. He really meant to just stop the violence with the gun as an empty threat, not to shoot it. Sadly he was pointing it at Magneto lol
You don't put your finger on the trigger until you're going to shoot. Otherwise you could have an accidental discharge, like shooting your friend because you suddenly find yourself aiming at them instead of your target.
If you look closely, you actually see him move his finger off the trigger when the gun starts to move, around 2:23. So he's thinking it's his arm that is moving instead of the gun so he moves his finger hoping that will keep the gun from firing. Great attention to detail when staging the scene.
Excellent scene in German and well written. In German "Tailor" literally translates to "one who cuts". Just top notch the multi-lingual puns. Outstanding writing.

@@kn.b magneto is Jewish and was a kid during the Holocaust. He was searching for the guy who killed his mother and experimented on him and killed nazis along the way.

Eric, being a German Jew who lost his family and everyone else in the Holocaust, has committed himself to hunting down as many of them as he can find. I can't remember exactly how, but he figures out that he'll likely find some in this bar. He remarks on the German beer in German, loud enough for the two other patrons to hear, and so they call over to him in German. They're expecting friendly conversation with a fellow German. He asks what brings them to Argentina - which is, of course, a whole ocean away from Europe and this is in the 1960s, long after the war ended. One says he's a pig farmer and the other is a tailor, laughing at the fact that they committed atrocities and got away with it. They say they came from Dusseldorf and he comments that his parents were from there. They ask for his parents' names but he tells them it was taken from them by pig farmers and tailors. The numbers on his forearm were identification tattoos, forcibly given to the Jews. By showing them his tattoo, he outs himself as a survivor of the Holocaust.
Damn that scene is amazing.. whether you like the Fox X-Men films or not Fassbender's Magneto was rageful. Being German myself and knowing the stories of Argentina.. He played this perfectly, when he turns over his forearm I got chills.
the only two things that weren't accurate is that Villa Gessel is actually a seaside city, not a mountain one, and the barman was talking in mexican spanish, lol.
+supahtyp On this viewing I felt like the "frankenstein's monster" line came off a little flat. Feel like it might have been better if he said it in German.
+supahtyp I think his acting is quite good. He is supposed to be a boorish man, laughs at his own 'jokes' even when they are not jokes. I've met people like that in various countries including Germany. Notice then how his body language changes so much when Fassbender says " _Sie_ _hatten_ _keine_ _Namen_ . _Ihre_ _Namen_ _wurde_ _ihnen_ _weggenommen_ ." He becomes much more rigid, and switches his drink from his right to his left hand, because he wants to be ready to reach for the knife. The music goes very well with the sense of menace that Fassbender brings to the scene.
+Mats Wilson True, we don't know if the Nazi even speaks English, - he may only know German and Spanish. I think it was more to keep the number of subtitles to a minimum - it is an American movie after all. Also, they probably wanted to use that line in the trailer, so it would have to be in English.
+I. Th. yes. when I saw this movie this scene stood out as almost an audition for Bond. To be honest I have always disliked the Dan Craig version, this would firmly put the character back as, suave, sophisticated, and the best goddam fictional spy ever. Put this out there people if you want to see this great actor in this iconic role...
The music and execution of this scene was perfect. Love how he used his powers to throw the knife at the shooter, then took it back to stab the guy's hand again to keep him pinned. That's how you flex.

I actually think one of the best parts of this clip weirdly is that it has a tiny bit of Charles just partying, it shows you why they have such a different outlook on life. Erik has spent years hunting down people who traumatised him and murdered his family and millions of people like him, Charles has lived a life of luxury. It's no wonder why they have such different outlooks.
Aside from the first rate acting by everyone in the scene, look how beautifully composed it is. The feel is realistic, which is what you need for a fantastical film like this. The shot where only Fassbender is in focus while the fugitive Nazis are blurred in the background is like a blurry memory that Eric has, one that comes into sharp focus when he turns to face the two. "Out of the past I come, a man you've never known, to avenge your victims as they cry out for justice."
I like how he throws the knife and flies back like a Mjolnir. The way he slicked back his hair after stabbing the hand and finished his beer is EPIC!! Fassbender is awesome!

I envy the universes where Fassbender got to star in a movie as good as this scene. I could sit for 3 hours watching Magneto kill Nazi's in creative ways.
Missed opportunity for a Magneto spin-off where he just goes around the world taking out as many Nazis as he can (maybe with a bit of a John Wick-influence) before he meets Charles. Oh well.
If I had a nickel for everytime Michael Fassbender was in a movie where he drank in a bar with Nazis and then violence ensued, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird it’s happened twice.
My favourite scene from this movie. I keep thinking about when people say someone is crazy they mean they are out of control of their emotions or mind or what not. But to me Magneto here by Fassbender is both crazy but in total control. His emotions and memories of WW2 fuel his actions. So damn menacing.
He lives those events every day, even if sometimes he doesn’t realize it. All it takes is seeing something… He’s back there again in the present, only now, *he can fight back, and under the exact same rules* - which is “if you have the power, *There Are No Rules.”*
I love this scene so much. Never have I rooted for a character more. The music, Fassbender's unhinged intensity, the conflicted responses of the guards, it's so cinematic, yet incredibly real. I think a lot of us have people in our lives we wish we could get payback on for various levels of harm done to us. We will never get to, of course, but watching Magneto exact his beautiful, brutal retribution is so incredibly satisfying in substitute.
The reason I love this scene is that he could deal with them with hand-to-hand combat without even bothering to use his powers, yet he use it in such subtle way to show, that he is a mutant.
I agree! Magneto younger is fiery, angry and when you see what happens to him in Apocalypse, you realise it takes me so long to now be angry he's just fed up of the mistreatment of mutants. He will fight till his dying breath by any means necessary
The way this scene is done is masterful, even apart from a marvel film. We feel the buildup so much more intensely than they do and to be able to pull that off so well.

Amigo, I've re-watched Xmen films as well as this youtube clip countless times and always thought the setting somewhat familiar but never thought more of it until I saw your comment today. Checked one of my 2015 travel photos when I was there and it is 100% Bariloche, that hill in the background is unmistakably Cerro Lopez when viewed from its Northeast.

I love how this scene is so german. These guys are former SS Officers so the moment Erik told them about the Name they instantly knew what was coming. And they still klinged the pints with him and drank their beer before they started. Never waste good beer. Such a german moment

What is so mesmerizing is that the music in this scene is absolutely powerful in it's intensity and laser focus. For this scene to work with that type of music, the actor has to be talented enough and capable enough to match that music. Fassbender not only rises to that level, he makes it look easy.
You realize when he did this scene, the music wasn't ready for probably a year. You have it backwards...the music has to match the intensity of the scene, which makes Fassbender's performance even more impressive.
