I flew one of these for awhile ... When you start them you start them in flat pitch on the props .... You get there by when you shut the engines down ... you DO NOT use the Red Fuel Switches .... you use the RCS Switches move them to stop and pull the throttles to the reverse position. That puts the props on the stop looks ... once the engines are running the next time all you do is pull each engine one at a time quickly into and out of reverse to release the stop looks ... so when you are ready to depart you push your condition levers full forward just before throttles come up for take off.
@jefffavignano The Mitsubishi MU-2 model was originally created for X-Plane 9 and just got tweaked to continue working in X-Plane 10 and now X-Plane 11 with minor improvements. That is the reason why you feel the texture or quality is not up to what is nowadays possible with X-Plane 11. Also the GPS 530 got added much later, after a sophisticated 430 and 530 became availble in the X-Plane 10 run. Thus the COM1, COM2, NAV1 and NAV2 frequencies are still tuned using the knobs on the panel above the GPS 530 (as it was done before) and not by the GPS 530 itself. Personally I feel this is much easier to handle via click-hold-drag compared to the double layer knobs and buttons required for setting by the GPS 530. Wrt. the price tag: In the last years X-Avation was offering this aircraft for ~20 $ (US) during their Black Friday sale (typically near end of November). Don´t know about 2017 yet, but that price would be more than fair for such a highly detailed and well documented model.
Hey Jeff! Quick explanation on the Power Levers: The yellow region is just the ground range, not reverse like you called it. Reverse is only the last detent and below. Make sure you are on Ground Idle during Start and Taxi, so it wont launch ahead once you release the brake. I guess its tough to find the spot with those contols, so just look at the TRQ gauge, it should read close to 0 .
Thanks man, I later did find that out in the manual so me hitting the reverser was actually how you are supposed to taxi it. I still think maybe a value or two is too high and the airplane has a hard time slowing down. This was confirmed on the forums about this current version of XP11. I know they updated the turboprop physics.
Great video. The deal with the flat props is called start locks. How you get them into start locks is to go to full reverse as you shut down and hold it there until below 20 percent rpm. If they’re feathered you won’t be able to start due to too much air resistance. I fly a Cessna conquest which has the same engines and in that plane if that is the case there is an un-feathering procedure you have to follow
The MU-2 is a really fast and safe plane but you have to flight it by the numbers! if you do not, you put yourself in a dangerous situation! This plane requires preparation and respect and is not a good aircraft for low time pilots. In this video you land with 40 degrees flaps. This technique was used in the '80 while in more recent years has been demonstrated that 20 degrees flaps is a much better solution in most airports. With 40 degrees flaps you don't have margin of maneuver like with flaps 40. Nice video 👍
I am enjoying the variety of aircraft you operate on X-Plane 11 as it always keeps it interesting. And congrats on nearly hitting 600k subs, shouldn't be too much longer !
In real life the Mu2 is the noisiest thing next to a rock concert. My flight instructor once said that this plane is very efficient in converting fuel into noise. I never forget how we were inside during ground school and outside one of these babies was starting up. We couldn't hear anything else.....
ooh i need to get this ASAP, Hey Jeff, do you plan on doing some DCS videos in the near future ? The new Razbam Harrier is getting ready to release in a couple weeks following that the F/A 18 Hornet, then in a couple months the F-14 Tomcat, would be great to see you do some DCS videos as i am consumed by DCS World esp 2.0 as i live in Las Vegas NV so the Nevada NTTR map is great for me, great video bud, see ya in the next one !
Jeff regarding the sound of the MU-2, there isn’t an MU-2 out there that sounds good...at all! It’s a loud and noisy plane and I think the developers were pretty close. The nice turbo prop sound you referenced is mostly from the PT-6 which this thing definitely doesn’t have.
That thing goes so fast it will fly out of its paint ... have about 1200 hours in one and lived I love that thing .... preferred it over our Cessna C500 jet
That's a pretty cool death trap, but I agree that they need to step up the texture game and sound quality especially for what they are charging. Are you still having issues with xEnviro not displaying radar data correctly on the PFD?
They also kill your hearing. Unplug a GPU with nothing but foam earplugs and you'll find out. Those props scream probably more than any turbo of it's class.
LOUD LOUD LOUD...and not so safe, if I remember correctly...I could not fit in the damn thing either...Just me thoughts (KING AIR) even being mentioned here...WUT??
Yeah, this aircraft was originally made for X-Plane *8*. The cockpit had a major facelift for X-Plane 10, but a lot of the model is around ten years old. Surprising they're still charging $35 for this.
@jefffavignano thats no MU-2! Its too quiet! (for all those who are gonna say it is an MU-2, I know, but if you knew it was an MU-2 you would know how loud it is)
Hey Jeff, great video really enjoyed it. Could you do an Aer Lingus flight maybe? Don't know if you've heard of Aer Lingus but it's an Irish airline. Would really enjoy that one. Thanks keep up the good work👍🏻
Hay Jeff my Friend is having a problem with the plane only being able to yaw to the left and not turn right i don`t know if you had a solution but if you did that would be awesome thanks.
Jeff Favignano ... I wonder if they purposefully left the exterior sound out due the fact that the noise produced by this aircraft is just God awful... or perhaps they couldn't find a good enough sound file for it that wouldn't blow everyone's speakers... either way, I completely agree with you... you pay for a product and should expect it to be perfect or damn near it especially for 35 bucks...
Hey Jeff, If I could make a recommendation for your next payware aircraft I would love to see you do a live stream with it. It's the aersoft crj700/900x pack. I bought it and absolutely love it. Maybe do a first impression live stream.
Concerns have been raised about safety in operating the aircraft; there have been 337 fatalities from MU-2 crashes.[17] As of October 2005, the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) undertook a safety evaluation of the aircraft. It concluded that the aircraft has met its certification requirements: It is safe when operated by properly trained pilots who operate properly maintained aircraft. The FAA is in the process of mandating training specific to the MU-2, as it has in the past for other aircraft. When such mandated training was required outside of the U.S., the MU-2 accident record was vastly improved. [Wiki] . That said. the MU-2 is not a bad plane. It was modeled correctly with an inverted horizontal stabilizer. Thats why its o squirrly. You have to begin a turn with the rudder and then follow with the aileron or you risj killing yourself. Thats why special FAA training certification just for this plane.. All of you guys who think its shit might just want to fly something a little bit easier, like an An-24. Because this plane was never easy and became known as a pilot killer.. However, also from the wiki: MU-2s have been flown by retired United States Air Force pilots working for Air 1st Aviation Companies, Inc. under government contract at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, where they provide U.S. Air Force undergraduate Air Battle Manager students of the U.S. Air Force Weapons Controller School with their initial experience controlling live aircraft. In the tactical simulations, the aircraft usually represent F-15s and Mikoyan MiG-29s. Students must control eight MU-2 missions before they can progress to controlling high-performance aircraft such as F-15s or F-22s.[12]
Actually turns are made with spoilers. Very effective with the roll rates staying the same at low speed and high speed. Definitely had to fly it by the numbers. A very high wing loading, about the same size as a C-172 but 4x the weight. But it gave a great ride in turbulence. I survived two engine failures in about 4500 hours in MU2’s. First airplane to be designed as a turboprop. And it was demanding but fun to fly.
Jeff Favignano well yeah I meant could you fly a plane like if you got to pick one IRL lol. But geez the switches and buttons there is toooo many of them for me to remember what they do lmao
hahah im not much into planes i couldn't tell you anything about them but i have to give you major credit on how much you know about them. Like i said i would be sooo lost, im lost on trying to make my own server on FiveM LOL!!!!
27% of all delivered MU-2's have been involved in some kind of accident. So easy to tip stall because of the wing loading...not much longer than a 182 wing but significantly heavier. Enjoying the XP content though, good stuff.
The MU-2 is a challenging plane to fly. It isn't the fault of the aircraft that it is. If you want a safe plane, get a Diamond. The MU-2 was always a race car and there are pilots out there that cannot fly them but continue to do so. Check out the last guy to crash one. He was warned not to get it because he was a mediocre pilot. Well, he got one and the rest is NTSB history. Pilots that over estimate their abilities continue to fill the NTSB database. Check out who is dropping their PC-12 from clouds, or deploying their chute on a Cirrus or stalling their TBM on approach to a runway. There are a ton of poor pilots out there who crash planes. If the MU-2 was inherently unsafe, they wouldn't be flying today.
Yep, the MU-2s that haven't crashed have to be in compliance with a crap ton of Airworthiness Directives as a result of tragedy!.. I agree on the texturing, and the sounds in flight I was ok with. I'd get it on sale for sure. Thanks for the great vid.
Where are you getting your info from? Because it's totally off. The MU-2 doesn't have a "crap ton" of AD's. In fact, up until 2012, it had ZERO airframe AD's. It still has the fewest AD's of any aircraft in its class.
Depends what you want really.. i've never tried VR but i can imagine it being way more immersive then TrackIR. On the other hand i can see VR becoming really exhausting for longer flights...
Spoilers did not deploy on landing. MU-2 has a reputation as a hot ship. The accident rate reflects that. It actually uses the same main landing gear as the F-104. For folks that want to operate off a short field yet have a 325 kt. cruise the MU-2 was great. If you were not sharp, esp. on single engine ops, it would bite you.
In x plane 11 I can not use my saitek x 52 like i use in fsx because their design is not good beside when I re install it came 100 plus GB????of course I uninstall again regards retire airline captain.
Not sure how to answer that but yes this is probably more intense than ATS. You can always get the free demo of X-Plane 11 and it will perform the same as the full sim!
I'm stuck working with a 960 gpu and it can't handle much. Thanks anyways Jeff! We need to play some ATS sometime! I'm finally getting the hang of it, lol.
Is there a difference between Steam Edition of X-Plane 11 and the one you get in the actual X-Plane website? Because clearly the steam version is a lot cheaper and from what I can see it's only at version 11.02
Ah, gotcha. And also do you know how long it takes until the update goes through the steam edition? If it's ridiculous long wait, I'd just hold off to buy the $60 version.
I know this isn't related, but just wanted to share with you guys: Was on this one Air Canada flight... and OH MY GOD. That pilot absolutely buttered the landing so nicely xD
Yeah there is way better options at a lower pricepoint. Also if baffles me that they can't spend that little more time making the passenger area to look better. If you can make a superdetailed cockpit but can't even spend a little more time on the passenger area to make it look complete i have my questions. Also how inside and outside sound is the same is just stupid..
@@quattro4468 Funny enough that you replied to my comment after 4 whole years, because Jeff has actually flown both the F-18 and F-16 in DCS since 4 years ago.
I hesitate to question the safety record of an aircraft, but the MU-2 has a track record of crashing. A lot. Most of the MU-2s in service are now cargo aircraft, thus avoiding issues with passenger safety. In fact, a cargo MU-2 crashed at my local airport just a few weeks ago.
I think the safety record got better after they mandated a type rating for this aircraft. Pilots with little experience were flying this aircraft even though it handles like a jet.
@@kavendewey2767 No type rating, just mandatory training once or twice a year. The MU-2 since the required training was implemented is the safest airplane in its category.
Not true. I have flown an MU-2P up to 28,000. The Solitaire can get up to 34,000 per it's certification, but due to RVSM restrictions they don't fly above 28,000. Which type of MU-2 did you fly?
My Dad and I almost went down in one at Fresno Airport in 1985 after taking off at SFO and doing a "slow ascent" takeoff. AKA the pilot and co-pilot forgot to put to put the gear up which f'd up the landing gear due to the airspeed messing up the gear/sensors. We didn't have 3 green when we were landing in Fresno. Had to circle for about an hour to burn off fuel. We did several fly'by's in the middle of the night but the control tower couldn't tell if the gear was down and locked. We finally had to land. They were going to foam the runway but decided not too. Fire trucks were standing by and were rolling once we touched down. Thankfully the gear eneded up being down and locked and we landed safely. Flew home in a Learjet 35. Much safer airplane. Thankful.
Having flown real MU-2's andbeen to training to comply with the SFAR to fly (get insurance on) the aircraft; The MU-2 is a Fantastic turbo-prop! I no longer fly real-world. I own FSX and XP10.. X-Aviations Mitsubishi MU-2 is as good as it gets! Jeff? RTFM!!!
@@MooseKicks1066 Thanks Fish, I haven't flown sims for a few years.. xplane has a lot of great features as does the multiple iterations of FSX. When I last flew flightsims I flew on VATSIM.. My personal favorites: Carenado A36, Flight1 C421, Alabeo C441 Conquest II, and my heavily "tweaked" Franz Luftfahrt LJ23. A "hop" from KCRQ to KRNO; The MU-2 would be my first choice for cost per hr to own and fly.
@@chadvienna9288 owners are now replacing the props with a german made 5 blade prop which improves performance and reduce the noise. ref. MU-2 RENAISSANCE OWNERS INVESTING IN TIMELESS TURBOPROP TWIN, good article. One MU2 crashed near my house years ago in bad weather. He was in a holding pattern full IFR. Fell on top of a car dealer and kill a couple of other people. RIP
This is a very old plane that dates back to X-Plane 9 I believe. At the time it was one of the first high quality add-ons for X-Plane. It seems that they just did some basic updates to make it work well in X-Plane 11. Fairly unimpressive for the price, I agree.
