X-Plane | Ortho4xp Tutorial | Photorealistic scenery freeware

Ok, I finally found Ortho4XP and installed two tiles at level 17! Wow, fantastic scenery now! Would love to get rid of the trees that grow in the fields where there is only grass. Never the less, this is very good and a great tool to help visualize an approach to an unfamiliar airport! Thanks for your wonderful tutorial on how to do this!! Gord.

Excellent tut. A mask is the guassian blur between an overlay image and the scenery below and when the tile is shifted down, you do not get an abrupt ending between the tile and underlying scenery, you get a nice blending. In the manual mode you can select the width of the blur - default=8, prefer 16.

Excellent video. No problems getting it to work. Selecting 38 tiles from South East USA took 5 hours to process on my I7 8700K, 32gb ram, 1080 Ti system. 60gb of data. Thank you Digital Aviator. Subbed

There's also one great tip: you don't have to copy folders with ortophotos to x-plane directory. You can just make a simple windows shortcut to them. This allow you to have for example X-Plane on smaller SSD drive, and Ortophotos on a different, huge HDD drive, so you don't have to have them in two seperate placec so you save your disk space :)

What a great tutorial on an otherwise confusing subject! You have demonstrated the truth that "less is more". Refreshing relative to the many other videos out there on the subject! It's got me into the "end zone" :-). Can you maybe discuss the customize ZL function relative to your back end procedure?

Excellent tutorial, a little fast with the copy past had to double check which files you put them in and so on just downloaded the miami to west palm tiles best decision ever and fly a MK1 hurricane over that it looks absolutely gorgous great vid just subscribed.

Thank you so much for the video! I tried it for Atlanta and Punta Cana and had no problems, however I have been trying it for Pensacola, Florida and keep getting two JPEG Library Error messages. One says "Corrupt JPEG data: premature end of data segment". The other says "Not a JPEG file: starts with 0xff 0xd9. No idea what any of this means, but when I try to start up x plane it says Error, could not locate image file for terrain. What should I do? Coordinates are latitude:30 longitude: -088

Can you use HD mesh and use the batch build function to automatically build multiple mesh tiles so you don't have to build the tiles individually ??

I followed your very clear instruction and "wonder boven wonder" I succeed dank hiervoor. However, when I flew to Eelde I saw 2 runways one Ortho based (dark) and one original X Plane(or W2XP?). Other airfields no problems. Any idea how to fix this?? Bij voorbaat dank.

I used Google for ortho images after I managed to install the ortho, I noticed too many details are added to my original default x-plane, but the quality is fuzzy, and not as sharp as it was, please what is your image quality experience ? Thanks

I used 17 zoom which made the files reasonably large BUT in an area I fly a real aircraft for training I want to increase textures to 19. My question is must I delete lower zoomed textures of the same area or? And add the overlays again? Thank you 👊

Thank you so much for this fantastic tutorial! I only just got into X-Plane as there's a Steam sale on this weekend and it was only 51$ Canadian. What does the vector and mesh build options do? Do they somehow gather much higher resolution vector and mesh data and include it in the tile data? Thanks again.

Vliegend boven de pacific en zooming in op het water, zag ik zelfs de bodem van de zee, of iig. de onderzeese heuvels die als eilanden boven het water uitkomen. (Nog wel, deze eilanden zullen als eerste verdwijnen door de stijging van het zee niveau.) Op het eind laat je zien dat Xplane het water niet geweldig simuleert, is daar een plugin of een andere manier voor om het wateroppervlak wat op te krikken? ps. Bedankt voor je uitleg jammer dat X-plane van zichzelf niet al zo mooi is als na Ortho4XP.

did you use w2xp in the video for the houses? Because I don't have houses or anything just the satellite picture of the house but no 3d also no trees

do i have to keep the tile files inside the ortho4xp tiles folder or can i cut them out and paste them into xplane? cause its doubling the size when we copy^^

At 00:24 he mentions a plugin that handles the placement of buildings. Did anyone catch which Plugin? And do you use both of them together?

Hi there, I was wondering if someone could answer a question I've got. I installed X-Plane 11 and the Europe (7.5GB) and Africa (10GB) Global Scenery DLCs only to find out that my laptop isn't powerful enough to run all that. I have to lower all settings to the minimum in order to get 30-45 fps (when all settings are maxed out I get 0.5fps or less). Since I only want to fly in the Canary Islands for now, and given how small that region is... Would it be a better option to remove both Global Scenery DLCs completely and just install Ortho4xp for that particular region? Or would installing a scenery specific for that region instead of the Ortho4xp be the better option? Thanks in advance. My Laptop's Specs (I know, they're not impressive but it's what i've got 🤷‍♂️☹️): i5-8250U NVIDIA GeForce MX130 2GB VRAM 8GB DDR4 256 GB SSD.

Great Video including an explanation which can easily be followed. One question: Is default XP11 Autogen placed appropiately on places it should be? I read it is based on open street map data so roads and houses should be fine even without world2xp. Can you confirm this?

Hey AVANAK - really nice your tutorial --- nevertheless: followed it to the detail, got all the .dds textures, but at the end the Ortho4XP window showed: "Independant step: building of an Overlay DSF from third party data: and in the next line: Failure: there is no file to sniff from at the indecated place." Of course I can not find any yOrthoXP_Overlay folder.... What did I miss to install??

I don't have a BIN folder, instead I have an INSTALL folder. All it shows is a link to the author's RU-vid video which is impossible for me to follow. Can you do an update to this??

Can you add a drive letter in front of the "Custom Scenery..." entries in the .INI file so that the folder can reside on a separate drive ? "D:\custom scenery ..."

I am having all kinds of trouble trying to get this all to work. Can anyone help me? I'm no noob when it comes to computers, but this whole project is the most confusing undertaking I've tried to ever tackle. I really think it boils down to lack of organization and a ton of conflicting information more than anything I suspect. The installation procedure appears to have changed but as far as I can tell has not been updated or explained anywhere. One of my stumbling blocks has to do with the installation of python and it's modules. But now I am not even sure that section of the installation is necessary. When I run orth4xp.exe, a python process is loaded in the command interpreter, and I have noticed there are a ton of python scripts that come with the ortho package, which makes it very confusing. I also wonder about properly editing the ortho and python config files. I am surprised that as part of the installation process we do not get any kind of opportunity to do so, and just editing the ortho4xp.cfg file alone does not seem to cover all the bases. Even when the process "works" and everything "appeares" normal and I am not getting errors, the scenery still will not load. I've watched at least 4 videos on this subject but still I have gotten nowhere. Can someone please help? thanks

To give everyone an idea of the zoom level size differences, I did a test using the same tile of the map at 16 and 18. Level 16 is 1.87GB and level 18 is 25GB.

Hello Digital Aviator, I am absolutely sold on the Ortho4XP I find the scenery comes to life just like you say and yes it does take a few gigs up on the hard drive, I think its worth it. There is only one question I would like to ask, I seem to have a Blue Haze over my scenery after modification, is this normal please. Well done and I am sure the Guys here are all of the same feeling GREAT.... chas

Why not just create a Shortcut to the ortho tiles into custom scenery folder instead of copying them? Wouldn't that save some space? Also, I delete the jpg files from Orthophotos to save additional space...Thanks for the video!!!

every time when i try to build a scenery, in about 5 min. i get this message: HTTPConnectionPool(host='c.tile.openstreetmap.org', port=80): Read timed out. (read timeout=10) will try again in 1 sec but nothing happens, than it will try it in 2 sec and so on. would can I do?

Why dont i see my custom zoom levels ? i save them but i don't see diference when flying and when i go back to ortho4xp and open the tile , the custom zoomlevel lines are not there ! . also when downloading i only see .17 files ( my standart zoom level is always 17 ) . even when i open the tile folder i dont see any 18 or 19 in there . So can you please tell me what i am doing wrong ? i watch more tutorials and i'm follow them to the letter , so i really don't know why i don't see it . I wanted to make a short video so people can see the difference between zoom 16 , 17 , 18 and 19 . see here : postimg.org/image/h9ykl2lur/ . as you can see it an extra 1.7GB and i saved them , but it just won't show ?

Graybird. Very good and would love to do the same, but unable to get past python. Have even emailed python but they are not interested in helping. I have a good rig with W10-64 bit. and have looked at all the videos. Most just breeze over loading Python as if no big deal, so it must be my problem. Have heard it could be my Norton anti-virus software?
