@@erikheddergott5514 😂 I agree grandma is an awkward choice to describe an OG punk front-woman who is a truly trailblazing baddass ! Godmother? Spiritual predecessor?🤷♀️ Mine aren’t much better- what term would you use?
@@hallievanoutryve3109 She was also not a Godmother, she was Punk. Would you call Jonny Rotten Granddaddy of Punk or Godfather when he was Punk. I was 15 when Punk started in 1976, I was 16 when it reached Continental Europe and X Ray Spex where Teenagers when they had there Big Impact in the late 70es. Teenagers like me: No Mothers, nor Godmothers just Punks, real Punks. Superb Punks.
Yes, a sax in a punk song. I was just as WTF when I first heard it. With her shrieks, wails, caterwauls and DIY junk culture fashion aesthetic she could outdo any pasty faced guy. Can u get any more punk than that?
The purity of this is sublime. I love the raw sax and Poly's voice rocks. A million times better than today's artists with their whiney voices singing over cellphone ringtones. Up Yours ! Cowell
Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard But I say... Oh Bondage! Up yours! 1, 2, 3, 4! Brilliant. I hope Poly's lasting legacy, side from the obvious regarding friends and family, is that any girl who first hear her and this band realize that having heartfelt lyrics and a kick arse sound can yield results and relying on your sexuality and flaunting it doesn't have to be the only way to get somewhere.
the memories come floofing back. a time when i and many didnt give a shit about anything....met my future and still wife at a clash concert in 78 she was and still is a punk through and through
Poly was unique I love to hear her voice the band everything. Play them at least 3times a week .her daughter. Thank you for her puting her life story out ther xx
coming up for 10 years without this revolutionary woman.. mari really did so much for people of colour, women, music and fashion. she lives on in our hearts ❤️
Loved this band and this song. Incredible when you think Poly Styrene was only about 16 on this video; her lyrics and vocals and the 1000mph guitars and caterwauling sax just blow you away.
Blows my brains it's so good. For those who slag off Poly, go listen to something else, I just can't understand people who obviously don't have a life or they would be listening to music they do like rather than listening to stuff they don't.
I dont have a lot of musical influence in my life but when I discovered this kind of rock and riot grrrl music it just was like a piece to the puzzle i've been missing for years

the sheer energy and raw sexiness of it turned my head, I loved this song the first time I heard it and before it was even half way through, you dont get bands like this these days, granted times have changed music has the world has, but my taste in music has stayed the same, oh boybands, up yours!!!
Met her in the Soho Hare Krishna temple in 1984, didn't know it was her till I was told afterwards. She had a new name by then. Radha, Rana or something like that.
I am here because I do my best everyday to wear as much crust punk looking gear as possible. I love the diy punk scene. Because honestly punk is more relevant now than it was back then. I am a punk. A true punk. I love being a punk. I finally found my calling a punk. It's so cool I love the dress
A very little girl, wearing a "platic bag" as a gown, the braces, curly hair, a badass punk attitude and a voice so powerful that could blow you away...oh Poly!
fantastic! i was into these guys before the dawn of youtube, so i didn't have easy access to videos such as these. it's cool to see them live after being into their stuff for so long.

Wooowww.. i haven't even seen the new handmaids' series , but i love the 80s movie version of it , love margaret atwood, and i LOVE poly and x ray spex , and to think that the series brought this song up again , and that younger generations might actually get it.. makes me wanna cry with joy.. maybe we can actually get past days of treating women as disposable , property, objects.. just maybe 😓
A balmy summers day in '78 marching from Trafalgar Square to a park in Bethnal Green with thousands oflike minded people to see bands like Spex, The Clash (tommy Gun live amazin), TRB and so many others. Chattin with Billy Idol before his capitulation in to fame and fortune. Thats as cool as it gets brodel77. Long live RAR!!!
