In this video, I look at how to make the X-Touch one a much more usable controller in Cubase, thanks to the generous creation of a script by a fellow Cubase user. You will need Cubase 12 or later for this as it makes use of the MIDI Remote functionality introduced with C12.
Bjorn's original script is here (for the X-Touch and others):
github.com/bjoluc/cubase-mcu-...
You can download the script here:

I was struggling to get this working without much luck. Tried several different scripts posted on the Steinberg forums but each came up short in one way or another. This worked great! I posted this video over there btw so more people will be aware.

Tx Darren, I actually considered this 18 months ago but chose the Icon Qcon Pro G2 and then extended it with the EX2 G2 expander for 16 channels in all. It all works so well in Cubase & Nuendo with only a few minor tweaks.

I have a client with an Icon, and he has reliability problems with it in MCU mode - are you using it with the stock Cubase remote (as seen in the original demo on here)?

@@musictechtuition I've only ever used the QConPro with Mackie Control from Setup but I'm happy to give the script a go to see how I get on. I have a Stream Deck which I spent far too much time configuring to use Cubase, then realised I wasn't actually producing music anymore so Midi-Remote in Cubase made me wary lol

Thanks I bought one two years ago with the extender. Sat in the closet until now. Now if I can only figure a way to use the extender with the x touch one. Everything you explained is working great. Bought your latest book couple months ago. Great. Thanks for bringing life into something I thought would be great but was disappointing with. Maybe something later on setting up the Function Keys?? Thanks again.

I *think* you can add a second copy of the script with the extender enabled. I don't have one so haven't been able to try this, but Bjorn gives instructions in the original Github repo at github.com/bjoluc/cubase-mcu-midiremote

@@musictechtuition Man, please can you help me with this issue? Do you also have a problem with re-record on this device? When i press again the rec button during the recording it does not immediately record again but there is a little 0.5sec bug. Something like this: short re-record which immediately stops in 0.5sec and then starts the real re-record again. I hope you understand my English. I had the same issue with the Korg controller. Only when i use the shortcut on PC keyboard, there is no bug. I dont know what to do with it about maybe 3 years... Thank you very much. Petr (czech republic)

@@petrzeman24 Hi Petr. Can you explain a bit more what you're seeing? When I press record on mine, it puts the track into and then out of record, while the transport keeps running. So if I press record, it will start, and when I press again, it will keep playing but no longer record. pressing record again makes it record once more. It's doing this exactly the same as when I do so on the keyboard. Are you seeing something differerent?
@petrzeman24

Switch on the click. In cubase active re-record. Now when i press again the record button on x touch during recording, you can hear it. It doesnot record immediatly again but there is short quick bug. With active clik you can hear it (because the click sound do the same) On PC shortcut no problem...

@@petrzeman24 Ah, gotcha now! Yes... that is different between the two modes (I missed activating re-recording). I think that's a bug, as it does the same for me (and I don't think it should do). I've done a bug report to Steinberg for this, so hopefully it'll be fixed!

Thanks for this Darren - interesting and I'm surprised how cheaply you can pick them up. I'm thinking this could be a great complement to the Qube Audio Mobi One that I own - if you haven't come across it before, it's a highly customisable controller but out of the box it's configured for the Cubase channel strip. Definitely food for thought, thanks again.

Thanks a lot! Finally i can use it after some years in the box :-) I also realized the display issue and hope it can be fixed. Not really important, but it seems that the master fader does react on commands, but the fader on Cubase and on the x-touch one do not follow each other

Yeah, there are still a few rough edges, although the original script author is now working on a dedicated branch of the code for the XT1 and a couple of other single-fader devices, so I'll do an update if he releases the code.

@@musictechtuition Thanks! I was thinking it would be amazing to have the steinberg cc121's ai knob functionality implemented into xtouch's jog wheel. that allows to use the big jog wheel to adjust any parameter which one hoovers over with the mouse (one of my favourite features as a mixer). scrub button could be used to switch between jog and parameter control modes. I was able to use this feature in logic with automation quick access function but unfortunately cubase doesn't have that function. You can find more information about cc121 ai mode in this video of Greg (starting at 6:50) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eZlsH4mt8lA.html

Thanks for the script and support. I received my second extender today and thus got your video via detours (since it is anything but easy to get 3 devices running in Cubase at the same time) ;) Can you possibly add the F keys for the "encoder assignings" as they are present on the large X-Touch? Or create a little tut, how you can link them yourself (if possible). Thank you again and best regards. Jens

First of all, I want to thank you for all the information you share. Your channel is truly unique. I would like to know if there is a possibility to scroll horizontally in the project using my MIDI keyboard and MIDI remote. I asked Greg Ondo, but he couldn't find a solution.
@musictechtuition
@musictechtuition 6 месяцев назад
Thanks! When you say scroll horizontally, just checking that you mean the same movement as grabbing the scrollbar with the mouse and moving to the right? (i.e. not by selecting a part and moving to the right that way)?
@Cristiania7
@Cristiania7 6 месяцев назад
@@musictechtuitionYes, that's what I'm talking about - the project scroll bar. I can create scrolling using the Shift + mouse wheel combination in Windows, but I want to achieve it by assigning a shortcut through the MIDI Remote feature.
@TheDarrenJones
@TheDarrenJones 6 месяцев назад
@@Cristiania7 Unfortunately I think you're out of luck - assignment to MIDI Remote for things that are not mixer/channel/fx controls is really a case of assigning to an available Key Command... and there isn't one for doing that. So I can't see any way of accessing it as a result.
@Cristiania7
@Cristiania7 6 месяцев назад
@@TheDarrenJones Yet, I manage to move my cursor using the MIDI remote and even utilize shortcuts for zooming in/out, controlling markers, track arranger sequences, and many other features unrelated to mixing or channels. It's peculiar !!!

@musictechtuition
@musictechtuition 6 месяцев назад
Yeah, I think the V2 uses MCU mode as well (rather than a .dll file as the V1 did), so it's possible to make something that will work well for it.
@TandisJenhudson
@TandisJenhudson 6 месяцев назад
Thanks for this. Wasn’t that 8-fader limit issue also applicable to the Presonus? I once bought the Presonus and had the same issue?
@musictechtuition
@musictechtuition 6 месяцев назад
The 8-fader limit was only with the V2 Faderport (which worked in MCU mode). The V1 (seen here) used a .dll file and was a custom controller which got around the 8-fader limit.

@musictechtuition
@musictechtuition 5 месяцев назад
Hi Thierry. I don't think you can easily with this script, but you could map it using the normal MIDI Remote system in Cubase. But then you'd need to swap between that mode and this script if you wanted to use the features of both at different times...
@cl9826
@cl9826 5 месяцев назад
So one thing I just noticed that confused me at first and made me think something got messed up (it also appears to be happening in your video): Select a track outside the current 8 track group and look at the track name it reports on the X-touch. It doesn't line up with what's on screen (3:49) however, when you move the fader it does control the correct track and then it updates the name. EDIT: I wonder if this is just an issue in the script where it's grabbing the name of the track before it switches the group.
@musictechtuition
@musictechtuition 5 месяцев назад
Eagle eyes! I hadn't noticed that (TBH I never look at the display for the track name), but Bjorn has since updated the code significantly and has a pre-release version which is dedicated to the XT1, which I've been running for him for a few weeks in testing. It doesn't suffer the same issue, so when he does release it, I'll do an update.

Hi Darren, this looks great, I have an X-Touch that I have been using for a long time-now with Cubase 13, and your script would be very useful, but after following the installation procedure exactly, the script does not show up in the Midi remote Manager. I have tried to import it, but the result is that the import script rejects the .js file. I get a message that says Script Archive could not be imported. As well when I drill down to the correct file location, I have to change to "any file type" or you dont see the .js file. What am I doing wrong? thanks in advance.

I'd make sure you double-check the folder structure is correct, and you're putting it in the right place? I don't think you should need to import it, it should just appear as present if it's in the right place - see around 7:24 or so for this.
@christianbechard5664
@christianbechard5664 4 месяца назад
@@musictechtuition Hi Darren, the folder structure is correct, the problem is that I recently updated my Windows 10 to Windows 11 and it has defaulted my desktop, documents and other items to OneDrive - with the result that for some reason, every time I put the .js file into the correct location, OneDrive deletes it/or does not allow the file to sync. It is the weirdest thing. I have spent most of my evening trying to figure it out and get rid of Onedrive with some disastrous results. Wish me luck!
@musictechtuition

@@christianbechard5664 You have my sympathies. OneDrive is a nightmare which some of my clients haven't noticed until it's too late! I detest it, and it's becoming more insidious as it's much more difficult to turn off than it used to be. At least icloud is easy to stop permanently, but it seems each update turns OneDrive back on and it's easy to miss. Even if you manage to set up W11 without an online account, it will pester you that you're "missing out" on all the "best features", etc.. Complete pain in the backside and MS trying to upsell to use their (frankly awful, IMO) cloud services. It wouldn't be so bad if Windows was free, but it's expensive as well to buy!
