In this review I make the mistake saying that the Kha'ak are robotic, they are not, they are in fact insectoid. I do apologize. ALSO the X Universe actually takes place within our own Milky Way, not another separate universe. I used the wrong terminology for that as well.
This video is a little different than my typical format of video. I had a few people ask me what this game was even about so I figured this was a good place to start.
I spent way too long on this video, so I apologize for the late release. I had to scrap a few versions due to the fact that I was pushing two hours. (Not a fun watch, I wrote a freaking essay worth of information)

Hey there, i am a long term fan of the X-series. I played all games since X2. I have also for some modding work for XR studied all major sources about the story and layout of the X-Universe. I therefore have some things to mention: 1. Its not another Universe, its the same, its even in the Milkyway, its all the X-Universe. 2. Xenon is not just another name for the Terraformers, they are very distinct from each other. The Terraformer evolved into the Xenon. 3. The Jumpgate, through which the Terraformers where lured away from Earth, was not a hidden one. It was the official and only Jumpgate of the Sol System. The Terraformers came trhough it. The Terrans reproduced an Terraformer AGI-Core and loaded it on an Spaceship. The Core simulated an Priority Conflict to the Terraformer Fleet which made them following it. 4. The Khaak are not robotic, they are Insectoids. They are also from another jumpgate network. 5. Regarding Sargon, the only one claiming him to be Sohnen was himself, so we only have his word. I believe, Sargon was a member of a different yet unknown race that wanted to create the jumpgate connection in order the invade this jumpgate network. Sargon doesnt matches what is known about the Sohnen. Because they travel in large, cylindrical, white ships without surface features. The have technology that is far superior than what Sargon had and are therefore not dependend on the help of minor races like the paranid. Lastly, the Sohnen have other goals than connecting earth with the network and would definitly hunt sargon down, if he would be a rogue one of them. 6. X3 Terran Conflict is not a DLC, its a standalone title. 7. The system Omicron Lyrae, which you encounter in XR, is the same system the final battle in X2 took place. One more correction. Tha Terraformer AGI didn't go rogue on it's own - it was sabotaged by a disgruntled employee.

Some correction with the X4's newest DLC: Timeline. 1. Sol's jump gate is made by humanity alone. Which got the Ancient/Sohnen really worried because giving the age of human race, we shouldn't have the technology level to achieve something like this. This is outside the Ancient control. 2. Terran didn't produce AGI-Core to lure the Terraformer fleet away. It was an interrupted data transmission from the Terraformer which makes all Terraformer fleet homing in on the signal. Earth fleet didn't have the time to understand why but just rolled with it at the last second. 3. Sohnen(and by extension, Sargon) is a semi-mechanical lifeform servant that was created by the Ancient(the ppl that built the jump gates), who interact with the physical universe to maintain order among the gate community/biological/Artificial Intelligent races.

@@SarahAndreaRoycesChannel No, the TF/CPU ships (the nigh sentient AGI cores that command the terraformer fleets) went rogue on their own. The guy you are talking about, DR. Marteen Winters, merely wanted the terraformers initiative to keep going, while the government and an expert commission decided that would be unethical and transmitted a kill code (Which due to the second fleet being a self replicating fleet, and having been on its 7th generation at this point, it didn't reach them all and some of the ones it reached no longer responded to the kill code). Winters did however steal one of the TF/CPU ships, #deff before it received the kill code, and set out for deep space, killing a boarding terran commander before finally escaping. He was in cryostasis at the time that the 6 TF/CPU ships that were dozens of generations off from the original second fleet arrived above earth. He was finally woken up over 900 years later by an expedition from the community of planets. he would go on to help the yaki syndicate become the yaki we see in the current X universe. I gained all this information from the bonus content encyclopedia that comes included if you get the Community of Planets Collector's Edition bundle. Fun fact. one of the original generation of TF/CPUs actually became self aware (might be mentioned in the video). it fled the Blackhole sun that destroyed a majority of the terraformer fleet before eventually becoming part of a Presence Cloud (which are how the Ancients live. cause they digitized so that they could live indefinitely. the also digital sohnen are their agents in the greater galaxy and supercluster.

Actually in X BTF there was reason to think the broken gate could be used to go home. This is why Gunne was so concerned with destroying it upon his arrival. Gates made by the ancients are hard locked to another gate, at least if you aren't also an ancient. Why the gate network was so useful to Earth was our own Terran gates could lock onto other existing gates, letting us use the network. You could go from Earth to anywhere we could find a gate. Humans did build a second gate before knowing the ancient gates existed and sent it at sublight speed to Alpha Centauri. When they attempted to test that gate they discovered alien gates they could lock onto and didn't need to build more gates now. That gate is still there and the fear is the Xenon could somehow connect to Alpha Centauri. If Kyle could have gotten there he also could signal Earth (though it would take 4 years for Earth to get the signal). Also the Xenon "rebelled" due to a poorly-written software update after they were basically retired. It caused them to attempt to terraform already colonized planets again, obviously killing the settlements. Colonists obviously resisted and the Xenon were capable of self-defense and the war was on. Finally the Argon deliberately attempted to purge knowledge of Earth from their society because there seemed to be no way back anyway and inventing a new one could endanger Earth again. That said I love this video! It's a great essentials guide to fairly obtuse lore, and even obvious lore that's easy to miss when you're busy with the sandbox and plot points might come 40+ hours apart and so you've already forgotten the last bit when you hear the new. The sheer size of the games presents pacing issues for the story.

Doesn't the argon government hides the information about earth mostly for political reasons? it's the reason some members of it dislike goners since they wish to save all of earth's records, keep in mind that was years after gunne founded argon. also i wouldn't say that the xenon killed people mostly for a fault, the reason was that they only saw martin as the only true respectable human since he gave them sentience with that upgrade due to him being one of the main terraformer AI creators that got angry when terrans decided to ditch the project because aldrin colonists tell you that they protected martin by killing some colonists after they tried to go after him. i believe they retconned that nvidium is kha'ak food instead of it being part of their planet like gunne tells you on X3:R since they are space bugs with a weird hive mind, it also explains that paranids keep aggressively mining their food sources which is what made their first contact so brutal as they got desperate since nvidium is a rare mineral and see all life outside theirs a threat to themselves. oh and they say that the gate network was shutdown due to albion conflict with terrans not being affected much since their gate network is different, it's one of the reasons why the xenon HUB cannot highjack terran gates or why you cannot jump to terran sectors using jumpdrive in X3, it's also hinted that the xenon hub is partially responsible for it meaning your character in X3 is responsible for helping shutting down the gate network. i still haven't played X4 to see cradle of humanity's lore but XBTF and it's xpac has some of brennan's character covered, X2/X3:R focuses more on JB and X3TC/AP focuses a bit on terrans, i hope on X5 we can have more story bits like X3TC where it's optional for you do to it since they've learned how to fix their engine after X:Rebirth and how xperimental shuttle is dealt with and if terrans ever asked brennan/argons about it or even how tech levels will upgrade, terrans being near ancient tech level isn't really that explored on the games which is meh but that would make them really OP.

Important detail. When Julian was taken in by Ban, Kyle wasn't missing. Kyle just wanted to help his son back to the straight and narrow. The whole investigation into Kyle's disappearance came about later in the game. Also the Kha'ak are not robotic. They are a hive like insectoid race.

To anyone reading this in 2024: X3: Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude weren't DLC. They are standalone games now sold together as The Terran War Pack on Good Old Games (GoG). A very low cost way to test out the series if you're interested. They're still great games today and I think easier to get into than X4, even with the limits that come with being an older game.

On why the military strategy of these stories is bad (an X4 perspective). ... its all based on their piloting level and the devs HATE the idea of the piloting skill going above the 2/5 stars you can get form books. The NPCs are just sitting around strategising so they never get any xp. They probably didn't even get the books off the Trader.

@@guildofnoobs I honestly think it has potential for significantly more mass appeal. The biggest issue is the learning curve which i dont think is really that bad if you put in just a bit if effort. I think if the game had a bit of a better tutorial and a starting option with a bit more direction for new players it would excel in popularity. I wonder if starfield might bring it some more attention in the long run. I could see starfields mass popularity helping put x5 on the map with people wanting more space sandboxes. Everyone needs a gateway into their niche and starfield might be just that.

@@guildofnoobs If you look carefully, Khaak have some very sophisticated geometrical shapes. The K destroyer looks something between spider and a squid 🤷‍♀️ I understand, it is very difficult to program a fully fledged story in a game like this (X4). Creating a living universe is extremely difficult, on its own. People who were used to X3 games, didn't like X Rebirth, because it lacked the free roaming spirit of X3, which games could have been played in many different manners, while they lacked the main story. In X3 one could play it Elite style, focus on fighting, piracy, industry building, trading, etc. It really offered an excellent sandbox experience, but - no story! So, we'll see what X4 brings us. Maybe they succeed in creating a true successor for X3, though they say it is not 😎

I’m really excited to see where they take it. I love the lore, world, ship design, and want more. I hope we get a more defined kha’ak race, instead of random encounters. Played x rebirth and the one thing that stood out to me was the ship design. The industrial feel of there ships were awesome and I kind of want more of that. The argon carriers looks amazing.

This new core was installed aboard the USCSS _Dragonfyre_ and activated. Even though the newly built AGI core was by no means complete it caused a priority conflict within the Terraformer fleet attacking Earth: until or unless this priority conflict was resolved, the Terraformers had no choice but to follow the USCSS _Dragonfyre_ and the fake AGI core" (X Encyclopedia, C-17).

Very nice video, just now found it. There are a few impactful incorrections, like the Kha'ak being a AI, which they are not, they are a Species from outside the gate network. They are hive mind of sorts, but not "artificial". Another thing to point out, the gates shown in all the games are in the same galaxy, our galaxy in fact. So the Terran are not from another universe. A smaller point at th every start, Kyle does not arrive and immediately meets the Argon, much to the contrary, he meets the Teladi first who think he is Argon, pretty much the whole early game in XVT is to find the Argon. Stil the summary was pretty good, though it "only" touched the plot lines, there is much more "story" in the game, like how there was a foundations guild created by Argon and Boron, and a Profit Guild with the Paranid and Split, and how the Teladi (who were cut off from their home planet had no males to fertilise their egg, so they were basically all female "clones") implemented teh credit as currency. There is so much to the X Universe :)

@@guildofnoobs My issue with the story is that it was very easy for it to rebound off of my ear while being so very easy to get distracted by other things in the game. Never mind how many hours can pass between plot developments. Played every game starting at x3AP. Couldn't tell you anything past generics with the story.

@@9thsfarchangel The story is definingly not the main priority of these games. Which isn't a bad thing I suppose. It takes a sideline to the games other features. It is nice to have a story, just so you don't feel like you are in a blank empty game. But I won't complain about them not shoving a story down your throat and allowing us to experience what other things the game has to offer.

Bit late but fun fact about the Kha'aks funny name: Even in german, egosofts native language, you can make fun of it because its very similar to the word "Kacke" which means shit. So the kha'ak clusters became known as Khaakhaufen(shitpiles).

Something to remember about X Rebirth, for an unknown amount of time it was being developed as an entirely new IP unrelated to the X universe but then at some point was shifted into being a soft reboot with Albion Prelude being made as a bridge between the two which is why outside of its story it's more or less just Terran Conflict 3.0 update. Also weren't the Kha'ak bugs?

Thanks for the video, man. After only playing X:BTF from start to finish story-wise a million years ago and then mostly forgetting about the series (except for trying X3 and Rebirth for about 30 minutes each and getting frustrated by UI and such), I finally wanted to try X4 for real. While the story might not be the most important thing in the X series I wanted to know what happened between the first and latest game. And your video seems to be the only good ressource for that kinda information. So thanks again.

Wow, this is a beautiful video. Very well put together. Please, now that it's been a little and there are more games out and expansions..... complete it up! I too would watch a greater detailed video. There was stuff I didn't know in here and I own every version of the game at this point. I have not played them all though but it's nice to see the complete picture here. would love it to include all of X4 and now the X3 Farnham's Legacy. :)

I've always seen the X games and have thought damn they look like they would be enjoyable to play.. Recently got foundations.. I went into the game with zero expectations because I've played star citizen & elite dangerous and those games just felt extremely bland. But I can honestly say this game is a lot better than I had thought it would be.. Anyways this video is great I now have some sense of backstory since I have come into the series pretty late.

I wish x4 would adopt stellaris storytelling mechanics. Embeds them in the game and lets you make choices that could end up shaping the playthroughs story. I see hints of it even now would love to see that grown.

Thx man, I was playing since X2 and really enjoyed the series. But the points you mentioned about Rebirth kept me from playing it at all. Being restricted to one ship? in an X game?! Nope. So thanks for summing up the lore from that chapter as I would have been missing out on it otherwise.

Thank you! I've just started playing X4 and it has been ages since I've played X3 (which I never fully finished). I played a lot of X2 and grew up with X and was wondering why the universe looks all messed up and teared apart. Kinda miss the clean borders from the older X titles but this video explains the story since then at least.

AGI also exists as a concept in the real world. The basic idea is that most AIs are designed to be very good at one specific task while knowing nothing about anything else (like a chess computer being able to beat humans at chess, but being completely unable to perform any other task), while AGIs could theoretically learn anything a human could learn.

I really dove into this game around the albion prelude, so I appreciate this awesome video. I had no idea the khaak were so big in this universe. I also enjoyed the story focus of xrebirth

X-Shuttle arrived where it did thanks to the gates attracting it (this is why you can only jumpgate to gates (or beacons, if you're an NPC) unless you're doing an unfocused jump). Argon made contact with Kha'ak prior to X2: The Threat. This was only explained in the book X2: Nopileos (which is a great read, by the way), so... Erm... The books and the encyclopedia over on Egosoft's website help. Farnhem's Legend was fan translated and is available on the forums, Nopileos is available with X4: Collector's Edition (extra content). The X3 book was translated into Russian in 2010, which I can read, but I don't know if there ever was an official English translation. A bunch more german books went untranslated.

Dobersift missed a few of the versions. In order: X-BTF X-Tension ! X2: The Threat X3: Reunion X3: Terran Conflict X3: Albion Prelude X Rebirth (Not a true X game, do to the limitations Egosoft placed in the game) X4: Foundations X-Tension was supposed to be an update to BTF: Due to engine improvements, was released as stand alone. X2: Same as above, applied to Tension. X3: Same applied to X2. X3: Reunion/Terran Conflict/Albion Prelude follow the same pattern. Reunion was a bit of a hash. X2 graphics were included into Reunion. Terran Conflict (which I had a hand in updating all the X2 compatible graphics to the new engine they made) (if you want to see my credits, look in the manual credits section under Graphics, you'll see it) X4, was meant for updating, very little massive updates, but follows the X series pattern closely. Rebirth, we true Xers don't consider as a true part of the X universe.

Regarding the Sohnen (I had to write this comment twice… fuck) So I was exposed to to this info like 12 years ago when I played Terran Conflict. It was mostly pieced together by fans in forums and wikis. So the ancients are supposed to be living on higher spacial dimensions on some dyson spheres they cut off from the gate network. They are also supposed to be ascended (?). All we had as an analogy for that back then was Stargate so thats what we went with. They are working against the cold out of the universe, you know our universe expanding endlessly and finally dying, constantly time travelling to work against the clock. You can see that in this state they have little interest in the dealings of lower species, especially the few in the space pocket that is the X Universe. Occasionally they however need an event in the Universe to work out a specific way to reach their end goal or perhaps prevent some mass extinction, motives we don’t really know. No imagine the Sohnen as a servitor race, they are sent out with a mission, they don know why they have to do what they are doing. So if they "fail" that might have been what the ancients wanted. Think of how the Terrans trust a total newcomer entering their space through a hated space gate because he destroyed some evil heading towards them. Also him getting his dad back along the way repairing that jump drive etc… yeah. So anyways the only depiction I ever saw of a Sohnen was in the excellent X Extended mods. These always added more sectors, some with the dyson spheres in them. The Sohnen there was some goofy looking six armed thing that hovered and could phase through solid objects. If any of this helps you I might be able to track down these long dead forums on the wayback machine.

This is truly interesting. I had no idea. Especially with the Ancients. It makes the Sohnen sort of a tragic race. Blindly following to which ever end or string the Ancients are pulling. Really really interesting.

@@guildofnoobs yeah if there ever was a deep lore it's likely X. As a german I think what egosoft delivered there should be our proudest export. I remember in 2009/10 X3 was basically "The Space Game" to whomever played it and the modding scene was MASSIVE, with people adding everything, from Atlantis to the Deathstar. Also don't feel too bad for the Sohnen, if the Ancients made them, I'm sure they are made to be a happy tool :D

@@guildofnoobs The X encyclopedia from Egosoft should still be out there and is as close to the proverbial horses mouth as you can get. Looking around my old PC I figured out that the Xtended mod for X3 Reunion actually adds the Sohnen as a whole hostile faction, so that might be worth a second look too. Also I shall now waste a few weeks in the map editor, thanks to you xD. Ultimately I can just say that the Devs at Ego are very friendly with info, as the X community, unlike so many other space game communities, is actually a very friendly and patient one.

Not gonna lie as a long time x3/x4 player I'm well aware of the lore. Which is why I find today's trend of developing AGI and proposals to use von Neumann probes to colonize space alarming. Ego soft clearly did their research. I have experience in programming so I'm aware that software is limited by what is encoded to do. While artificial sentience is unlikely, AGI doesn't need sentience to be dangerous. For example protection can be interpreted as imprisonment and safety can simply be death.

Thanks for this I actually had bought X4 because someone did a star wars mod for it, when they really should had done a BSG one instead. So I had no idea why the title was what it was. This was a pretty cool eye opener for some that didn't even know what the other games were about. (I'm even seeing the xenon push like it does like the Cylons mowing over everyone's grass huts) I can say that when I first started this game I was lost, like completely. The tutorials did nothing but complicate that by being so stupidly vauge and uninformative I almost gave up on it (Like why is being able to jump even a thing in this game?) But after watching some vids from JK Ninja about it I fired it back up and just started playing it to the point it grew on me. Not knowing the what anything was and seeing the xenon decimating everyone I tokk the one destroyer you can find and fled the rest of the game going to a sector that the Xenon were avoided totally Getsa Fune. I've been there since slowy building my economy and Just figured out how to make the sector mone and named it home of the last amazon tribe. Maybe that's where the space bikinis came from.
