X Universe Lore: Boron 

In one of the Boron story missions, one of them says "My rhopalium explodes with delight!" when you talk to him. A rhopalium is actually the sensory organ of a jellyfish (and often takes the form of that four-leaf clover on their bells), so evidently Boron eyes are similar to that. Also I just love the idea of Argons going fishing on Nishala and pulling up a Boron. That's officially how they made first contact.

I'm happy that the Boron are back. Their ship designs were always my favorite and they look really good in the trailer.

Great video : the only thing i would say is that in one of the ship descriptions for there lore is they decided not to fill their ships with water was to eliminate the mass associated with water vs Air... still great video

If you think about it, it's easier to build a ship full of air with water sacks(suits) then it is to build a ship full of water with air sacks(suits). The reason being, liquid is heavy and has tons more mass then a gas. So unless you want your water filled ship to take a full solar orbit just to make a 180* turn, it just easier to design & build a Air-filled ship and use that extra mass for more shields (and maybe weapons?

I'd not see the Boron putting themselves into their suits as a selfless act as much as a way to reduce weight on their vessels. Full aquarium bridge and decks would have a big impact on acceleration and manouverability.

I would like to say, water is exceptional heavier than it seems, an actual metric ton of water doesn't really have that much volume, so the inertia on a water filled spaceship is just insane, accelerating, turning and breaking become a genuinely serious challenge. also maintaining the water at proper temperatures in a metal box in space is crazy. also electronics and water don t mix well, maintenance of the spaceship functional equipment underwater is not feseable. these and more justify why it s so impractical for borons to have water filled spaceships and chose not to have them instead. though water filled rooms and gathering places, those should be water filled. growing ships is amazing, incredible lore

One thing I found interesting in X³ AP was that the Boron were one of only four factions (the others being, independently of each other, the ATF and the Terran United Space Command as well as the Xenon) to have created superheavy destroyer ships (the Boron Megalodon in this case). "To counter the potential danger of a Split Heavy Destroyer, Queen Menelaus demanded the construction of a new flagship to underline the military strength of the Queen's Realm. After intensive development work, the Boron Megalodon was recently commissioned, a ship based on the philosophy of the Boron Ray and equipped with superior armament, improved shields and a more powerful energy core. The biggest innovation, however, is in the walk-on parts of the ship. Previous Boron ships were filled with a pure ammonia solution. In the Boron Megalodon, however, a mixture of water, helium, ammonia and artificial adrenaline is used. This solution increases the crew's receptivity to external stimuli and boosts reaction speed, which enormously increases overall combat performance and comprehension. Argon officers already report that it would be very exhausting to listen to longer speeches by crew members of a Megalodon, as the voices of the Boron are in a constant overlapping state."

The fact that the ships arent filled with water makes total sense btw, imagine the additional mass of water you have to haul into space to fill these giant ships.

The Split think the Boron are wonderful, too! They go well with scruffin, chelt - you name it! By the way, in Rebirth, the Argon trapped in Omicron Lyrae (sp?) ate BoFu. Dunno if they didn't have anything else on hand when the gates shut down or if it was just a passing fad, but that's what they were doing.

You're wrong about the Boron's reasoning for not filling their ships with water. Water is much more dense and heavy than air is. Their ships would have a lot more mass (2 to 3 times as much mass) if they were filled to the brim with water. This doesn't only make it much harder to accelerate, but also decelerate. Air (oxygen, nitrogen and CO2) is negligible in mass in the quantity that it would take to fill even an XL ship. Not only that, but water is a much better conductor of heat than air. If their life support systems would fail, their water would start freezing. Even encased in a protective suit (like the ones they use to hover around their ships), they'd be stuck in frozen water until their suits would fail. So it makes perfect sense that an intelligent species that perfected space flight wouldn't fill their ships with water. One thing you also forgot to mention, the Boron didn't evolve naturally to space flight. They were uplifted by the Ancients. They learned to build ships from air breathing species. This is forgivable because its only mentioned in a few books, and it seems like all the wiki's leave this out. But yeah.

My fleet and tech is mostly a split / paranid mix. I guess I am pretty much setup for a war with the upcoming dlc.

I would to discuss the naming of Boron ships. Those are not Boron names. Every ship other than Argon and Terran is named by codename. Like NATO codenames for Soviet/Russian stuff. That is, so Boron have Fishes and other aquatics, Paranids have Old Gods, Split have Predators, Teladi have Birds and Xenon have simply letters. Boron names won't be even heared by other races ears, because they are Aquatic creatures. And the transliterated names maybe unspellable.

Boron might not be boring, but some Boron might be a moron, especially when their neighbor species split into several factions, fighting for Dominance and the position of next Split Patriarch, who are allied with paranoid Paranid, always doubting the heretics motives.... No, I don't have anything for Teladi or Argon.

Then the Terrans arrive and make a mess all over... Altough, now that i played KE dlc, i must say that the state of the galaxy is much different once you meet the Boron, again, they kind act as a glue to the other species, like the Terrans just worrying that some bad could come out from Heretic End's gate, once they realize that nah, is just the borons, they got bored and leave, the Argon, went there with the Aliance of the Word. Overall, a lot of things changed if you play in X4 with all dlcs as the devs intended, the Crubs Revolution, the new Paranid Realm of Triad, in most of my playthroughs now, most of the time, the galaxy achieve a level of balance more often than not, erasing the Xenon, the Khak, is more a problem than the machines, wich lead me to want that Egosoft made something about the Xenon, like give them more story, maybe some more sectors and ships, and such, they are there simply as cannon foder, and they don't even last long enough.

the boron dont have water filled ships because even their fighters full of water would give the ship an extra easy 20 tons now imagine a big carrier or capital ship full of water it would weigh as much as 20% of the atlantic ocean so would be far slower and less agile for fighters and capital ships would be near impossible to move

Also when thinking about why they put themselves in pods instead of flooding their own ships, is does make sense fom another point, not just because they want give other races the ability to visit their ships. The high mass of water compared to air would give waterfilled ships a huge disadvatage in maneuverability. Espacially on huge ships. Accellerating alone would require so much more energy. Then building the ship. While you also need to fill the ship with air, water for me seems to be way harder to get into space. Again because of its mass and if produced in space with oxygen and hydrogen you would need a lot of that. Explosions would probably deal way more damage to the ship if it was filled with water. While air can dampen shockwaves of explosions, they travel way easier throu water. A single explosion in water on the ship could kill the whole crew, crushing their organs. It just makes so much sense that the boron ships are not filled with water. These borons realy are geniuses.

I would love hearing Egosoft's explanation of Boron technology. How exactly do an 'aquatic' species with tentacles develop 'metal' underwater? Everyone here knows what a smelter is, used to cook raw ores and extract the metal. The process for iron alone is complex and then you need to add carbon to make steel. Great! But underwater? Where is your fire again? The dragon Drogon of Game of Thrones was anatomically based on real and extinct animals, it's animation styled on bats, hawks & eagles. The detail, time and respect taken paid off as a great many people were MORE interested in the reptile than the young girl riding on it's back. The Boron were made on a budget, with love, but a very small budget. The Sci-fi world has moved on. Tell me the Boron have had more thought applied to them than James Cameron's Avatar saga? So the Boron have to be amphibious like frogs but, they can't be because you can't move on land with tentacles. Octopus can barely drag themselves back into water if they're ever briefly out of it. They will NEVER be able to chop down a tree in a million years (or 10). Now the fun stuff. Electricity has a love hate relationship with conductive materials, you've seen the RU-vid videos of the Football team struck by a single bolt of lightning ALL at the same time? Now imagine you're inside a metal can filled with water and put electrodes all over the inside. SPACESHIP! Yeah. No. So the ship would be filled with air right? okay how? The list of 'yeah, but..' get's so long it's ridiculous. Making the ship somehow 'alive' is just WORSE. To get to complex systems you have to go through a few simple ones first. Living ships is even more complex than building the ships. You can't just grow an animal with microchips in it. Egosoft made Boron like Whales on Earth. A species thought to be as intelligent as people (depending on the definition used) yet they'll NEVER be able to fully exploit that intelligence because they're 'morphologically' constrained. Their bodies don't allow them to use tools so they'll never be more than mammals that swim in the sea, they'll only ever be able to sing to each other. As beautiful as that is, you can't build spaceships with that. When the sun expands and fries the Earth in 100 million years, they will need Humans to rescue them and take them with us. TLDR? in X games? lol The point is previous X games left Boron to our imagination, we could make them into whatever WE wanted them to be. Look however we imagined them to be. By lifting the curtain and revealing a beautiful 'my little pony with tentacles' (Split loves you) boy, you are opening a whole can of worms. I love the concept of the Boron, but I almost wish Egosoft had just left it up to the players imagination at this point. They're doomed to become a reddit meme.

I miss the old Boron design, not ship design the design of the Boron themselves, the new design is is more cuddlefish in nature, but the seahorse muzzle I feel is more unique and iconic in my opinion.

I think it is more on the scale that the Boron grow the structure and carapace of their ships but technology is technology. Unless the Boron economy literally brings a new, self-sustained ecosystem like the Terrans. Like say they take a basic structure of the ship they want built from hardened metals where conduits etc run through and then grow the ship around this.

You mentioned them filling there ships with air instead of water, this is not completely altruistic though. Filling a ship with water is a heavy affair, So filling a ship with air instead is so much more lighter, so ships dont need to hold all that water inside either, together with all the risks of a ship springing a leak, and the ice crystals only rupturing the hull further.

To be honest, i am very disapointed by boron ships' design in X4. In X3 they had (mostly) round shapes and moss-like green color. In X4 their ships and stations are all pointy, squiggly and have dark and toxic color scheme. Very antagonistic to their nature.
