The best way to practice as a sound technician requires some live recorded tracks. In this video I cover how to record your band rehearsal and then run the tracks back through your console to practice and refine your mix/stream.

I learned this the hard way… the new firmware deleted everything!! I did save all my scenes to a USB drive but the new firmware would not recognize that there was anything on the USB… I ended up having to download Behringer X32 Edit software onto a computer, then upload my saved scenes to it, then export it back to the mixer from the Edit App…. It took me many phone calls and a loong time to figure it out.

Give thanks Allam House. I never knew about tracks live until today when I was searching for videos about live streaming using the X32. I have registered onto the Waves forum, downloaded the software and I am surely gonna try it out. In our band we have the X32 rack and we surely gonna try this out. Thanks a great deal for the video.

Thank you! I have been frustrated trying to accomplish this very thing. I am using Traction 7 for my DAW and the best I could do was get the DAW mix to play back on 2 channels on the X32. The REC / PLAY feature and the Input settings (along with a tweak in Tracktion) is what will do the trick. As you were talking about the Play / Rec option, I was already thinking that I would forget about it and not have any sound for practice on Sunday morning!! Great callout. Thanks again!

You can change the routing so that the signal out of the card IS post fader and includes eq and dynamics. I changed mine for recording so I could use some shelving on certain mics. Drew Brashler did a video on how to change it.

hello again, i have a question, my playback is patched thru AUx 3 and 4, and put these to ch 3 and 4. Why is it the sound is recording to channel 8 of card instead of ch 3 and 4? I am confused. It should be ch 3 and ch 4 (AUX) to ch 3 and ch 4 of the card while recording and playback.

Thank you for the lecture. I am having an issue after recording in logic pro. My logic pro records on AIIF format and i notice when ever i want to play back outside the console, the volume is barely heard, but playing back with the console it works plays normal. Am confused
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 9 месяцев назад
I have not spent any time in Logic Pro for recording so I do not have specific answers to offer, but I would start with your gain on the console. Make sure you have a solid gain structure set per input where it shows between -18 and -12dB on the input meter. This should give you a solid signal coming into the DAW to work with on or off the console. Outside of that, I am not familiar with the AIIF format, but if you still have issues you might look to switch to a more standard .WAV file. I don't think the file type should change the playback, but it might be worth looking into. Good luck with the hunt, please let us know what you find out.

Thank you Allam! I am now using Reaper to record all 32 channel with my M32R console. It works well! My question, some of the track has really low level audio input, my question...if I increase the gain knob (on the console), will it affect to the level chanel on the console (will make the overall level on LR output increase as well). Can I set it separately? We have no congregation, so I use the Main LR on MIDAS connected to Video Mixer for streaming.

Yes, you want to set the gain properly and it will impact everything (house, stream, multitracks). Here is a video I posted that talks about gain structure and it’s impact. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--RjP3IKFfqM.html

The USB slot on the top of the console (next to the screen) will only record a 2-track. The X-USB slot will allow you to multitrack into a DAW (on a computer) or you could go with the X-Live card which does offer multitracking onboard to the SD slot.

hi, after all the configuration I want to send the audio to the headphones jack on the laptop so I can connect a cable to a atem mini and used it as a input for live stream. you have another way to use this configuration for live streaming, output the audio to a external video switcher? thanks
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
Easiest way to work with the ATEM mini is to route your stream mix to go out AUX 5&6 on the back of the console. Then, get a 1/4” to 1/8” TRS cable and plug in the 1/4” to the console (AUX 5&6) and the 1/8” to your ATEM mini

Thanks for your efforts to put this together and detail how to set it up. I do have a question I do have one question I hope you can help me with. In your demo, you mention using 4.0 firmware. We have an X32 with 4.0.2 installed on the board. When I look at the routing menus, there is no play or record option like you demonstrated. Do you had any input on what we may be experiencing?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
It is on version 4.0 and later. You will find it in the Routing > Input. It is the right-most encoder. ‘Rec’ is for normal service. ‘Play’ is for virtual playback from the computer.

Great vid, quick question. Would I have to set all of my faders to Unity in my DAW to get an accurate virtual soundcheck. I already turn off any effects and processing I have in my DAW but I'm worried that the levels I mix in my DAW won't translate when I do virtual soundcheck. Ex: record Sunday service for live stream thru DAW.... Come back in middle of week b4 reheand do virtual soundcheck without band... My faders in DAW are different than FOH
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
Yes, you want to make sure that the signal that sends your tracks back into the console are at zero. For me (in Presonus StudioOne) I use a Pre-Fader send for each channel that I set at 0 so that the entire signal I received from the console to the DAW will now go back to the console. This allows me to properly set my compression and stream levels knowing that my gain structure is pretty accurate.

I am having an issue Multi Track recording from the X32. I have the X-USB going to a Mac and I am receiving audio into Tracks Live, but cannot get any signal back to the board when playing back the track. I have the Record set to my AES inputs and the play to Card 1-32. I play the tracks on the play setting on the board and I get no input signal. In Tracks Live is have the X-USB selected under device control. I have the sample rates on the board and software set the same. I’m out of ideas..

HI and thanks for the great video. Just wondering...Is it possible to record to the usb thumb drive and the SD X-Live expansion at the same time?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 года назад
Yes, the USB slot on top of the console is a standard 2-track recorded and has selectable settings if you hit the view button right next to it. The X-USB card on the back is designed to offer the multitrack capability which could be setup to just do the same as the USB slot on top if desired.

Can this be used as just a Daw controller for Logic X? If so how would I connect? I’m wanting a mixer for feel but with motorised faders for automation. Thanks
@AllamHouse

I believe this can be setup for DAW control, but it is very limited in its capabilities. The X-touch is probably an easier (and less expensive) tool. I’ve heard the WING is a much better DAW controller that is also a full console, but have always done my automation by hand.

This specific program only allows you to record (that I am aware of). I personally use Presonus StudioOne which is a fully functional DAW and will allow you to pinch in other items. You would save your tracks and then you could run them back through the console and just have a specific mic set to re-record and have your own studio setup.

When its on record mode there is no issue. All I wanna do is record my drums and be able to eq them on the board while listening but I'm having this issue could you help me?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 года назад
I’m not really sure I understand the issue fully, but it is hard to say without watching it happen. The console does offer the ability to setup have different input for a channel regardless of the “fader number” that is listed in the order on the board. There is also different routing capabilities within the card outs, card returns, and in a DAW (if you are using that to record). I do offer private consultations in case you would find that helpful. First, Studio One does not come with sample multitracks. You will want to setup to record from your band, or find some in other places online. Second, it seems like you are deep into routing and I hope this might help explain it a little bit. You have audio coming in from sources (mics, guitars, etc) and those will get routed on the input tab of the routing page. On this same page, you can have a different setup to play back your tracks from a computer into the board for you to remix. This is separate from any livestream you might be sending through your AUX bus. Then you can page over in the routing page and get to the Card Out section. This is where you need to understand the current goal OR make one situation that could work most of the time. To Record, you need to have your sources mapped to go out 1-32 and you should have an extra 8 that could be mapped to your AUX bus to allow you to record that audio as well. Then, when you playback, you will have to route the recorded AUX bus to some actual faders. Tracks Live is the easiest way to setup/capture tracks 1-32. Studio One will be an additional layer of routing to have to learn and coy get way of teach/training

Make sure you have "monitoring" turned on within the DAW. Each DAW is different, but usually there is a button on each fader (near a button to arm for recording) that will allow you to turn on monitoring.

@AllamHouse 3 года назад
I was working with a church last night that is using Ableton. I was not as involved with the actual DAW setup, but I did see a few things in the process. (1) we had to make sure that the driver was running and it had an address to show connectivity to the X32. (2) make sure the X-USB card is selected in the audio card area of the properties. (3) setup your tracks and for input choose ‘ext’ and then you should have a drop down for the 32 inputs from the X32. Choose the one you want to map to that channel in your DAW (4) do the same thing for the outputs.

Hi, do you know if we can send the audio through usb 2.0 over 50 ft cable?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
The cable used here is a USB 2.0. I just did a short Q&A that covered the type of cable you need to connect from your console to a computer. You can find that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EwWBYPgSXwE.html In theory a 50' cable is the limit, but I have never tried going that long. I know they make USB 2.0 with a signal booster, but you might have to look into a converter to go from USB to Cat5 and back to USB (potentially). Good luck

On a PC you will need to download the driver for X-USB. You can find this on Behringer’s website by searching for X32, click on the full-size console, scroll down and look on the right for software. There are usually two driver options and either should work for you.

If it is only doing channel 1/2 on playback from the DAW to the console means the DAW is sending only the Main mix back to the console so you need to go into the settings and set your outputs to be individual channels instead of just the main stereo mix.

@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
You need to do the following steps: (1) Go into Routing > Card and set Card 1-16 to AES50 1-16 and Card 17-32 to local 17-32. Then, make sure to route your DAW to bring in all 32 channels from the USB cable. Make sure to connect the cable to the X-USB slot on the back of the console. (2) Go into Setup and make sure the Card is set to 32/32. (3) Make sure you have the X-USB driver downloaded if you are on a PC (not needed for MAC).

Question: For some reason, when I plug the M32 into my DAW (logic), logic only registers 2 inputs (not 32). I’ve never had this problem using a behringer, but I think it might be a routing issue… any advice?…
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Месяц назад
1) go to Settings > Card and make sure you are set as 32/32 2) go to Routing > Card and make sure those settings match Routing > Input 3) If you are on a newer machine running USB-C and converting with a dongle. Make sure it is either Apple or Anker branded. Other less expensive brands will only convert channels 1/2 4) go into the settings of Logic an make sure the inputs are mapped properly so the DAW has a place to send all 32 USB inputs from the console.

Great video. Question though. I've recorded a rehearsal using Traktion Waveform, but on playback, some channels are extremely loud and others are extremely quiet. All levels on the DAW were left at unity gain. What could be the problem?
@AllamHouse

This would be a representation of your gain structure per channel. Many people set their gain according to what they need in their room and then realize they have very little signal coming into their console (and then their monitors and DAW). The video below discusses the issue and my recommended approach. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--RjP3IKFfqM.html

So I have a question regarding this type of setup. I want to run two DAWs (Ableton running loops and Logic for recording Logic Pro and doing vocal tuning). Yes, I shouldn't do it, *BUT* it's a proof of concept that I've been pondering about for a while. All inputs are local, but Logic returns back the tuned vocals for the audience/house, loops/stems/backing tracks run into the house but are also recorded into Logic. I've been fiddling with the routing settings on the X32 and I can't nail it, I know it's possible, just don't know how. It would be easier on the Mac because I can use something like SoundFlower/BlackHole and route between them, but again it's not so clear. Do you have any tips? 😅
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Год назад
So here are a few things to think about that might adjust your approach. 1) The console can only attach across USB to one computer to manage inputs/outputs. Most people running a basic Ableton rig will have two outputs (Click and tracks) and send the headphone out of this computer into a stereo DI box which allows them to plug these inputs into regular XLR inputs on the console. You can go more advanced and get a Focusrite interface that offers four outputs or a Moto that offers eight outputs, but that is a more complicated setup. 2) Using Step 1 as a guide to get click and tracks into the console you now have the USB to run Logic for recording and vocal processing. 3) Depending on the computer you are using (and its' location in your venue) it may be more efficient to pick one DAW to do everything and go across USB. ROUTING SETUP; The Basic setup with two DAWs would have your Ableton rig using a DI and coming in like any other input. Your Logic rig using USB. You would utilize the USER INPUTS section to determine which inputs come from a preamp and which come from USB return (vocals). Your CARD tab would send all your inputs to the card. Your DAW would use some version of Sub Outs to determine the routing for getting your vocals back into the console. Keep in ind you Do Not want your main mix in Logic turned up or routed to any output otherwise it could be coming back into your console. The Basic setup with one DAW would be similar in that you would use the USER INPUTS to map your desired click, tracks and vocals into the console from the DAW. You would want to make sure that you have your DAW outputs set appropriately for the items going back into the console and confirming your main DAW mix is not sneaking into the console in any way. There are a lot of details to get right when setting this up. I have linked a video below that might offer you the concepts to work with but if you want to work together I do offer one-on-one consultations. If you want to explore that route please fill out the contact card on my website at sound.allamhouse.com Video Link - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-96dvkMd_tmw.html

The best thing to do is setup to record your band in your normal venue. Pick a rehearsal or a service, click those tracks to record and then just stop the recording at the end of the session. Then push those back through your console. I have stuff from my church, but these would be different than your normal folks so it would be okay to practice with, but not worth saving your work as it will likely be different for your actual band. Also, I believe there are options to get multitracks from other sources online, but I have always just recorded my group.

@AllamHouse 2 года назад
The first thing to keep in mind is that you can only run 32 tracks across USB so if you are currently recording all 32 inputs you will need to pick a few to not record. I usually go into Routing > Card and set 25-32 as User Outs. Then, in Routing > User > Outputs I set 25-28 to match my inputs and then set 29/30 for Stream Outputs and 31/32 for Main LR output. This will grab those signals and send them into your DAW.

Can you confirm that everything is set to run live sound and in Routing>Input the bottom right encoder is set to REC? Now, go to Routing>Card and make sure all of your settings look the exact same as the inputs tab. Finally, go to the DAW and make sure you have a 1 to 1 mapping of your inputs, nothing in the DAW is turned down (input, gain, or plugin) and it should work properly.

If you record on the X-live SD card, it is just like a computer... only onboard. It will record straight off the preamp, but no Armstrong’s are stored with the project. You would want to save the Scene of the board which is a snapshot of all your settings and then you can load it and play your tracks.

Yes, that is the goal. The tracks are recorded just after the ore-amp which means it does NOT have any of the EQ, Comp, FX in the recordings. This allows you to push them back through the console and practice without a band.

There is a trick using the P-16 channels that (with the correct routing) allows you to send signals into a DAW and include the onboard channel strip from the X32. True gain control is only allocated for the preamp on the console (or stage box). When flipping to a virtual soundcheck across USB or SD card (on the X-Live card) you can use the gain knob and this will impact digital trim. This is a great question, and one that I have never figured out myself. This would happen on my PC about once a month and it drove me crazy. What I do on MAC is switch my input device to me "Built-In Mic", hit Apply, then go back to the dropdown and X-USB is there (in a new spot in the list) and when I select it tends to work fine. For PC, the only thing I found that was the most consistent (but still not enough for me to call it a fix) was to... (1) Disconnect the USB cable (2) Power down the console (3) Reconnect the USB cable (4) Reboot the console Good Luck

By default it is not designed to record like that, but only pull in RAW tracks. You can become creative and setup some custom routing to record exactly what you want (within limitations). You would end up using a MixBUS and feed it the dry signal and the FX you want and then send that bus out across USB into your DAW. Also, if you are looking to just build a nice mix on the console and then send that to your DAW I have a number of "live Stream" related videos that might give you some ideas. If you have the Behringer X32 you will need to upgrade to the X-Live card which allows for multitrack recording directly to SD cards. If you have the Midas M32 it will come with this card already installed. Outside of those options, you will need to use a DAW to record. If you are just going for a basic record and playback, you might look at Trackslive which is a free download from Waves and it is a very basic DAW that would be a direct replacement for the SD card concept if you need this soon.

The setup will be somewhat unique and I don't have a specific video to point you to for this setup. I usually take the approach of sending all my inputs to a DAW (for multitrack recording) which is the video you watched here. Once those signals are in the DAW you have the ability to manage them in the DAW and then route them back out (across USB) and back to the console. If it is just one input you can get away with just changing the source for that channel, but if it ends up being more than that it is usually best to use the User In settings. To get started though, just select the channel and go to Home > Config and then on the left you can select the card channel that your signal is returning to the console on (from your DAW). I like to keep a one-to-one routing inside the DAW so that channel 13 on my console is channel 13 on USB and channel 13 in the DAW. I hope that helps. If I am using a linked MixBus for a live stream feed routed through USB to our computer, then I won't be able to do a virtual soundcheck and check how the live stream mix sounds will I? I imagine I'd have to route the stream through XLR and I'm having trouble finding what I need to take two XLR inputs (L+R) to create a stereo output.

We use Reaper to do multitrack recording at church. It's very easy to set up routing. You can also set it to record in FLAC, to save storage space (vs WAV) :)

Reaper is a great DAW. I personally use Presonus StudioOne Pro, but if people are just trying to record tracks and play them back in the console I promote TracksLive because it is free. Reaper is the next best thing due to minimal cost, but that is why I use TracksLive.
@djazz0

@@AllamHouse I was looking at TracksLive, and it seems like a simple solution for this purpose. However, on the page there's this note: "Please note: Development of Tracks Live has been discontinued. Tracks Live is still compatible with the systems listed on the Support tab below. On newer systems, REAPER 6.0 is qualified by Waves for multitrack recording and playback via the SoundGrid Driver." Heh... (I also like that Reaper is cross platform, it works on Linux, which I use at home)

I don't understand the gain levels leaving the x32 going into the DAW. What effects that signal? Channel gain settings or fader adjustments
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 5 месяцев назад
In this normal configuration, the signal is tapped right after the preamp and sent to the USB so the channel gain will determine the level sent to the DAW. I personally set my input meters to -12 in the X32 (a little hotter than you might see recommended).
@Speedring1

OK so If I have a Midas DL32 connected on B then the preamp screen in setup has no effect on the signal going to the Daw either.@@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 4 месяца назад
Sorry for the delayed reply, this got stuck in a weird "review" location in YT. The gain on your console will control the preamp level. This preamp could be the local one in the console or (if you are using the DL32) in your stage box. Regardless, your input channel will be sourced by a preamp (based on routing) and the gain will control that specific preamp. Once you have your gain set properly, you can set your routing that goes out the card and into your DAW. The signal will get tapped just after the preamp and be sent out USB into your DAW for recording. Note that the level coming out of the board (even when set to -12 on the input meter) will still seem small in the DAW. If you plan to do any post production work with these recording you will usually need to bump them up by 6-10dB per channel.

Anyways my questions is i am able to record and play back... when i play back the Main fader does nothing... also i am noticing that it is not going to any of the Busses i have set up... am i doing something wrong.. not sure where to look. thanks for everything

This is interesting. In theory, if your inputs are the only thing that change (from REC to PLAY) then everything should work the same. Double check that you are not sending all of your multitracks to the individual input channels and NOT all to input 1/2 of the console.
@TheSparkster112
@TheSparkster112 3 года назад
@@AllamHouse I will double check... but i can see all the channels I recorded are appearing on the same. CH 1 appears on CH1 and CH 20 is CH 20 i can see the input on those individual channels... it just weird... Thinking so many people have done stuff over the years that I just need to save a scene and default the X32 then reload that scene... basically starting over... Maybe?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
Sometimes it is worth a fresh start. You can use the library (on the console) to store your EQ/comp settings for each input. Then Dona reset and get the basic workflow functioning, then reload the settings one at a time and make sure everything continues to work.

Hi @allamhouse I followed all the steps, but for some reason when I play it back on the x32 the sound is only coming from channels 1 and 2. Where can I fix this issue?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 года назад
You’ll need to make sure the DAW is setup for 32 outs (not just 2). What you are getting is the main LR mix from the DAW coming back across USB 1/2.

@@AllamHouse I use studio one and I thought that when the routing from the x32 is set, and the input and output sources are set in the daw to “X-USB” it will automatically send all those channels through the DAW, as long as the right amount of tracks is set up in the DAW. Or am I completely wrong?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 года назад
Unfortunately, it is not automatic. You need to go into Song > Song Setup > Audio I/O and manually do the routing within the matrix window. This video here shows some of the setup matrix window in StudioOne and it might be helpful to you. There is a quick link in the description to jump to the 13:44 mark. You will also need to select your channels in the DAW to go back out the ‘sub group’ which will get it to go out USB and back to the console. If this doesn’t work out, let me know which version of StudioOne you are using and I’ll see if I can make a quick video about it. How can I safely do this? It would be hard to explain the scenario of what happened to me once; it happened such a long time ago. I can only remember patching things "the right way" on the X32 (setting all my input channels to Card 1-32) and when I pressed play it played back on my system extremely loud; I thought the speakers were going to blow up. Ever since that, Ive been afraid to try this again. Is there anything you didn't explain that we should make sure to do (prior to pressing play)? Or do you think there is something I might of done wrong? I use an X32; I use Logic Pro X and have a bunch of plugins on every single channel (including the master buss).
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
My initial guess is that the plugins were turned on and increasing the level that was sent back to your console. This would produce a potential for clipping on every channel and lighting things up like a Christmas tree. 😂. In my example I have no plugins on my channels and the signal is set to 0dB that is being sent back to the console... a direct copy/replay in the DAW. To rebuild your confidence (after turning off your plugins), turn your master fader down, hit play and slowly raise it to a desired listening level.
@ItzTooSik
@ItzTooSik 3 года назад
@@AllamHouse Got you! Thank you so much for your help. I should disregard DCAs, subgroups & my pre-fader monitor setups on my console when doing this, correct? The only thing coming into my console from my daw (that I can control) are the inputs as well as the MASTER fader, correct?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 года назад
When you are doing the recording part, Logic will be recording the audio that comes in on any track you have recorded. When you swap the console inputs to USB, you should be able to run the recordings (in a 1 to 1 line up) through your console as if there are people playing instruments... they just happen to be recordings. All the features of the console will be functional and the mix will go out your mains to your speakers. The idea is that you can record and then immediately push back through the console and not have to change anything outside of the routing.

That’s exactly right. Swap your inputs from Rec to Play and you can work with everything on the board in an isolated fashion to refine your sound for your stream.

What is max size USB drive you can record to? Also looking for best/largest SD/SDHC card you can use. Need to record 11hours of music continually.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 года назад
Are you just doing a 2-track off the top thumb drive? I’ll probably make a video out of this soon because it is a great topic. The top usb drive doesn’t render the recording into a wave file until you hit stop recording and I’m pretty sure after 11 hours it’s bot going to do well on that rendering. My choice would be to use a computer and a DAW with an external (or sizeable hard disk) that you could setup your desired record output (MixBUS, Main L/R, etc) to go out the X-USB and into the DAW. You get the stability of the computer to manage the recording and typically a DAW will do auto-save throughout the event. If you are doing a multitrack setup… good luck. I usually record my 1.5 hour service with 22 tracks and this tracked up about 13GB. If you extrapolate that across 11 hours, that’s a lot of space.

@@AllamHouse thank you! Good info. I should have been more specific. I’m more concerned with compatibility of the drives and cards rather than continuous recording. I see. My church records our services with the 2-track to USB on some standard 4GB thumb drives from Amazon. As long as you format it to Fat32 you are fine. My church is typically a Mac shop so we have to use Disk Utility to format. Multi tracking on a computer works well on either platform (Windows or Mac). Mac is plug-n-play where Windows does require a driver. I’ve lived in both environments and recorded many sessions in each.
