The MOSKWAII and the M185 have a lot in common, but there's a lot of differences too. This is not a detailed video but I mention a few things that stand out on both sequencers. The way these sequencers handle their patterns/repeats is completely different. If you want to know how to operate any of these sequencers you won't learn a lot from this video butif you're curious about them you will surely learn something from the video.

Great rundown. I'd love to hear your more subjective thoughts on the two though. I'll likely pick up one of these as my primary melody sequencer, and I'm curious to know which you'd pick and why. My initial attraction is to the Moskwa; there's something about a rotary sequencer that just speaks to me. My only hesitation there is the "menu diving", if you can call it that, of editing the parameters for individual steps. The m185 seems to have more of those controls out in the open.

That's about right. Still I personally prefer the Moskwa because the knobs on the M185 take a bit more force to switch. One of the biggest selling points (to me) for the M185 is the ability to chain/stack 2 sequences, resulting in variations and progressions that are always in the right scale (at least with the last firmware). For Moskwa you need a seperate expander for transposing. While the M185 has more hands-on control than the Moskwa it feels a little 'stiffer' you could say. Moskwa has more long button presses to edit every parameter of every step, so it's a little more sluggish, still the knobs and buttons are easier to interact with. Also: the things you can't access from the buttons and switches on the M185 need menu diving and as there's no indications at all you need to memorise the manual. On Moskwa everything is printed right there on the frontpanel so you don't need to memorise as much. It's a tough choice to make really as they both have their strength and weaknesses.

@@briesmodular thanks, I think that's helpful! I'm still leaning towards the Moskwa... I expect I'd end up getting the expander too eventually.

The "retrig" slider on the 185 needs an "odd beats" setting. Would make it a lot easier to get syncopated 16 beat patterns.

Hey! I hadn't thought of that, but that would be a lot of fun and very useful indeed.

+1 for wearing bracelets when doing a Xaoc demo :)

I'm always wearing those bracelets, but even more so when I'm doing Xaoc demos. Thanks!

Good lil comparison. Ive been attracted to the m185, but some important functionality seems buried in an opaque menu system....I cant stand having to constantly refer to a manual.... this was my issue with Usta as well. Hard to find a battleship or semi-battleship sequencer with a well laid out easy to grasp UI. It seems Moskwa 2 is the most transparent, easy to navigate.... a year later are you still using both these sequencers??

I sold the RYK sequencer exactly because of the menu system and because the switches were so stiff they were hurting my fingers. I still have Moskwa 2 and it's still in my rack as my go to sequencer for quick quantised riffs.

@@briesmodular i just ordered a Moskwa 2 w/ expander. Your video really helped me come to a point of clarity about the UI / menu navigation aspect. 🙏 thank you

@@Fluidstructure I'm glad I could help. There's so much stuff out there it can be hard to figure out what's right for you. The expander makes Moskwa so much more versatile, awesome that you're getting it right away! Have fun with the new gear!
