Hello, A-Sven-gers! Thanks for checking out my video on backwards compatibility for the Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles. In November 2021, Xbox announced the final 76 games in the backwards compatibility list, bringing the total number of Xbox and Xbox 360 games to 695 games (63 Xbox games and 632 Xbox 360 games). This enormous list allows for many classic franchises such as Borderlands, Call of Duty, Halo, Fable, Gears of War, Max Payne, Dead or Alive, Star Wars and more to be played with many visual and gameplay improvements and, in some cases, include the download content (DLC) for free.
This backwards compatibility is available for all disc models of the Xbox One (original Xbox One, Xbox One S, Xbox One X) as well as the Xbox Series X.

That part… here I was hoping for games like Azurik, Nightcaster, Kung Fu Chaos, Brute Force, Unreal Championship 1 to be playable on the Series X/S

I love that it not only supports games but in some cases enhances them too with better frame rates, free DLC etc 👍

I think the 2 biggest Pros of backwards comparibility are A) You don’t need to buy original hardware to play older games now, which saves a ton of money B) It saves space- not everybody has room in their setup for all of the different consoles, so having just 1 that plays all of your games is great

In some cases buying used physical games is cheaper than their digital counterpart, so having both options available is always nice for the consumer 👍

I wish backwards compatibility wasn’t that restricted , If you have the disc or digital game from previous generations you should be able to play it without problems

I agree, I wish it wasn't so throttled. Some point to the emulators of previous consoles, some to the licensing costs to reissue the game on the digital store, and also the extra work Xbox is putting in to update or optimize the games for the new consoles. Regardless, I'd definitely like to see more backward compatibility too 👍 Thanks for watching

This is genuine fan service from Microsoft here! Its great to see all the passive upgrades these games get from better hardware. Regardless of what they said, I feel like they'll start up the BC program again, but are just taking a respite in the mean time while ironing out any licensing issues.

If you do end up getting an Xbox Series S/X or whichever you get, and if it’s mainly for the backwards compatibility I recommend these titles if you haven’t played them. Original Xbox: SSX3, TimeSplitter 1&2, Jade Empire, Max Payne 1&2, Psychonaunts, Star Wars battlefront 2, Star Wars republic commando, Conker Live and reloaded and Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction Now the Xbox 360 games I recommend Xbox 360: Portal 1&2, Mirror’s Edge, Binary Domain, Asura’s Wrath, Vanquish, Red Dead Redemption, Alan Wake, Skate 3, Mini Ninjas, Toy Story 3, Fable Anniversary. There’s waaaaay more games than that, but it really depends on what types of games you like, but out of all the games I listed.. you should definitely give Asura’s Wrath a try, it’s honestly the most fun I had in a while with a video game.

I use BC all the time. The Mortal Kombat 9 is a particular surprise that it got added. Love the hell out of BC. Grateful someone at Microsoft knew the value of keeping older titles we love alive with this program. I would hope all the games on the current list find their way into people's collections and never end up in dumpsters.

The DLC isn't included with *all* games but it does come with a good handful of games such as the Star Wars Battlefront games, Borderlands etc. Wikipedia has a breakdown of the list of titles. Thanks for watching 😊

I actually really like the backwards compatibility but I would have liked to have seen more games here but there's plenty here for both 360 and oringnal xbox titles. I also like the improved framerate and visuals on the xbox one. It's also a lot less loud with its fan unlike the 360s and you have to worry about your discs getting scratched lol. I have 29 360 discs and 11 original xbox playable in total. I loved playing Ssx3 and dead or alive 1 2 and 3 on it. They look and sound great!

I think it's AMAZING the number of backwards compatible games made available- but of course, I'd love to see more 😊 You're right though, the upgrades on games like Crimson Skies etc simply look fantastic, it's incredible they not only ported but upgraded many of these games 🙌

If It was up to the backwards compatibility team at xbox every single game would be on there. There's games out there that they've been trying for years to get on the program but so many games are stuck in licensing limbo or companies want to re-release games themselves and charge full price.

Bought my series X last year and i’m really interested in trying out these games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 which some of them i haven’t played it yet back then. Here’s hoping that Xbox/Microsoft will continue the BC Program in the future so i can Play these older titles 😄

I truly believe that Microsoft will do the backwards compatibility program again. Because let’s face it after Starfield and many other of those game pass offerings, what does Microsoft have left? I’d rather have them do more backwards compatibility than nothing at all. And the games I would love to see become backwards compatible are as follows. Sonic heroes Shadow the hedgehog Sonic mega collection plus Sonic riders Sonic the hedgehog 2006 SSX tricky NBA street,1 or 2 Burnout three Halo, combat evolved

Im a 90's and a broke boi from the scratch got 1 game a year and thats sad Now im a Adult have Time and Money and can run all the Games today with a xbox serie x and a 2.1hdmi tv now a days youre got a full setup. One of the perks of growing up is finding the things you enjoy and spending money on them. Video games is definitely one of those things for me as well and having a console that plays multiple systems like the Xbox Series X is definitely a great way to enjoy so many titles over generations. Good thing to mention and know! If you have a game that's backwards compatible and its heavily scratched. It wont matter as long as the console recognizes the disk it will download from the network and install it, it doesn't install it off the disk.

Yes, the only reason I repurchased an Xbox One a few years ago was because of backward compatibility and to play MLB The Show 21 when it came to Xbox One. I already owned a few old Xbox 360 games I couldn't play but kept because they were rare like NCAA Basketball 2009, so with another IP I liked but didn't have access to on PC in MLB The Show coming to Xbox One it was a no brainer. I own over 60 games on Xbox and over half of them are Xbox 360 titles I loved or just didn't get a chance to finish back then.

I would still personally prefer if a Hardware/Software Engineer works to finding a way to make the system fully capable of reading, identifying, and communicating with all the data on the disk while at the same time capable of upscaling it. Basically the best of both worlds so that way we won't always need a internet signal in order for it to be possible. Until we have a proper nickname for this technique, I'll just dub it Organic-Backwards-Compatibility.

Just on a side note @@SvennyMcG, how did Microsoft manage to make Windows XP backwards compatible with 95 and 98? I still remember using all 3 Operating Systems back in the day as a kid, and was pleased at how all our older PC titles prior to Vista or 7 we're able to run on our newer system to an extent.

I live in the UK and Raiden iv was never released here on the 360; I purchased a copy from America but won't be able to play it on my pal machine. I would love to see some of those shmups released on game pass as they weren't released here either.

I feel like both Nintendo & Sony need to take a pager from XBOX. Because I personally enjoy older games, more then I do newer ones. And I have been holding on to my PS2 and PS3 systems for a long time. The fact that XBOX Series X has an option to let players play older games is a huge positive in my book. Maybe in future I might get an XBOX Series X, because the console does seem like it's worth getting for gaming, weather it be new or older games.

You know what's crazy is I picked up this title a few months ago and was mind-blown it wasn't on the backwards compatible list!! Like literally the only Star Wars Xbox title to not make it 🤔🤷‍♂️😔

Does this mean you can only use the backwards compatibility if you are online to download from the Xbox store, to read from the disc etc to play them.I have the original Xbox & 360 & loads of games but didn't buy the last gen console but am thinking of getting a Xbox series X second hand.Dont play multi player so never been online/Xbox live.

Essentially yes, you'll need to connect to the internet to allow the backwards compatibility to function. You do *not* need a paid online membership though (Xbox Live, Game Pass etc) to take advantage of the backwards compatibility 👍

Select original Xbox and Xbox 360 titles are compatible with Xbox One, and some are even optimized / improved on the Xbox One X! I show quite a few of the titles available in this video that will play on the Xbox One X but there is an official list available on the Xbox site (it's in the video description) 👍

Unfortunately no, that was an oversight on my behalf. Since this video I have installed all of the games shown here EXCEPT that Virtua Fighter 5 Online; the compatible game is Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, an XBLA digital-only game. Apologies for this error

@@SvennyMcG no problem. Also, disc versions of foreign games work. I've installed the Japanese versions of Rumble Roses XX no problem, as well as other region games like Clannad, all the Steins:Gates, and even Panzer Elite Action Fields of Glory. Does the disc have to be in the console all the time to play it or can you remove the disc and still play the game

You need the disc in the tray every time you boot the game - not sure if you can remove it once you load the game 🤔 Why would you wish to remove it?

All PS5 games also supports PS4 games except for Afro-Samuari 2: Revenge of Kumi Vol. 1, TT Isle of Man Ride of the Edge 2, Just Deal With It, Robinson The Journey, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition and Shawden.

It installs from online - you need to keep the disc as a key to play it digitally but it will download from the store. Good news is that will include DLC for some games 👍

The backwards compatibility is still available and Black Ops 2 is on the list. I have the dame model of Xbox One and it works - do other discs work on your system? Does that disc work on a 360?

The game was licensed to play on the Xbox 360; making it available on other hardware requires a new license. That's my understanding of it. To make the games playable on the new hardware they have to be downloaded from the Microsoft Store but more than just digital games they are running as they did on Xbox & Xbox 360

Yes, you'll need to connect to the internet to download the copy of the backwards compatible game to your console. After that, the disc just acts as a validation key - I'm sure this means it still needs to validate it on the internet as well but it's momentary if you have spotty internet connection

I believe the Xbox version is compatible with the Xbox 360 at least 🤔 and tracking down a 360 isn't too difficult or usually too expensive (at least around here)

It's actually stupid how Microsoft has to pay these Publishers again so that way they can put the same game but on a different console I can see why oxbox doesn't do it anymore personally I don't think it's a form of emulation if you're improving things but putting it on an upgraded version of the console technically to me since it is the same company making the console technically they are still in an agreement with each other that Xbox can use the games on their console and the publisher can get money from the games

I agree, I think it's crazy how difficult it is to re-license games especially if the franchises are done. In some cases the backwards compatibility games are upgraded but ultimately wish the list was bigger

Need for Speed Underground 2 looks to be compatible on Xbox 360 but that's it - I don't see any NFS games on the Xbox One or Xbox Series consoles as compatible with previous versions

So on xbox one xbox 360 games cannot be pop in xbox one and expect it to run like 360??? Let me get this right you have to be online with xbox one to download xbox 360 game? And then you have to be online to continuously to play game?

I'm not sure about having to stay online to play but yes, you'll need to be online when you first pop the disc in. Some games will run like 360 while others are improved or optimized

I don't see Scarface on the backwards compatibility list. The Xbox 360 does have a solid backwards compatibility with the original Xbox but the list isn't the same on today's consoles unfortunately

Back in the day, I used to be a huge fan of PlayStation because of backwards compatibility that was awesome but no because of the lack of backwards compatibility with PlayStation these days is the reason why I made the switch to Xbox backwards compatibility on Xbox isn’t perfect, but it’s far better than what PlayStation is doing. Backwards compatibility and another reason is for Xbox game pass as a customer. I think Xbox game pass it’s just a far better package deal a lot of the games on. There are Xbox 360 games and there’s a few original Xbox games on there as well. Sure the PlayStation five has more exclusives now But I don’t find any of them that interesting except for like maybe Spider-Man or horizons but there’s lots more games that are available on Xbox either through Xbox game pass or is an Xbox exclusive that I am more interested in even with the previous generation console game libraries combined the Xbox, simply just offers more of what I want

By the way, this video came out awhile ago, but since then backwards compatibility has just gotten more support now I don’t know even Microsoft said they’re pulling the plug on it maybe they are maybe they’re not or maybe they backtracked on that decision and backwards compatibility as for right now it’s better than ever on Xbox and it seems like for now it’s here to staythey seem to be embracing it. With that being said backwards, compatibility to original Xbox games seems to be somewhat limited for me. You might still want to either hold onto your old original Xbox if you already have one or why not go out and get one anyway if you want to play all these old original games. If it saves you a little bit of money, you could get I’m not kidding you are PlayStation two and the reason why is because the PlayStation two has about 90% of the same library as the Xbox in fact, the PlayStation two might be a little bit better because you would still get access to Xbox exclusive games, most likely as a desert old download on your modern Xbox And the PlayStation two open the door to PlayStation exclusive games that the PlayStation two had and this is what I do an Xbox series X combined with a PlayStation two. PlayStation two console will give you 9% of all the games that the original Xbox had plus PlayStation one games. The PlayStation two. Just gives you more stuff

Thanks for watching! Great insights! Xbox definitely has had more support this generation than the PS5 and with Game Pass (and Ultimate even including EA Play) there are a lot of options. I hope they do explore more backwards compatibility games in the future, especially with the Activision Blizzard acquisition. If you're looking for more original Xbox support I also suggest getting an Xbox 360, they're usually cheap and they too support a lot of the original Xbox library (not all, but a lot!).

The only reason I would get an Xbox 360 is if as a streamer, I have a demand for a game that my Xbox series X cannot play. actually homebrew get an Xbox 360 that has some homebrew on it, so it can play PlayStation games as well

Man looks at some of these gems for only 3$... bought doa 3 the other day, that game runs in 4k and looks better than most last gen titles. What i do know, in 10 years time when all is said and done and we have xbox series y or whatever and ps6, imagine a jailbroken xsx/ xbox one x playing EVERYTHING

With Halo & Gears I see your point; however, those Spider-Man games did get released on other consoles besides Playstation. In general it's difficult to get movies licensed games reprinted due to all the associated rights. Perhaps one day we'll see others like Web of Shadows, Shattered Dimensions, Friend or Foe etc though

Definitely! Yeah unfortunately only SoulCalibur and SoulCalibur II HD Online (both from XBLA store) are backwards compatible. Could be another licensing concern there
