A box can be cylindrical though, like in the 18th century women used to keep their hats in a box, a hatbox, and those boxes would be cylinders so the hats fit in perfectly.
It can work just like the Steam Deck. Have Xbox default boot to the Xbox Console OS, but have the option to boot into windows just like Steam Deck boots into Linux Arch. They can label games "Plays best in Console mode" but allow the game to be run in either mode.
Or make Xbox UI change to be like windows we can install whatever we want add vulkan API to it it will be a huge push of a hybrid system both games and software
I think Xbox OS for handhelds is the route for them. They can have 3rd party handheld makers create the hardware and then they just sell games and software. Like S Mode you stated, it can be opened up at a risk.
I think they should make a Series Portable. It's still Xbox but on the go. And overall would be a cleaner more optimised experience compared to the Windows PC handhelds that lack a UI and Optimisation.
I just don't see why anyone would want that. I would much rather use something like a steam deck with steamos that I can do whatever I want with than some locked down system. Even just improving the handheld experience for windows would be much better than taking away all freedom you get with your device.
My opinion on why consoles will never really go away: While the barrier to entry on PC gaming has gotten WAY lower than it used to be, it is still there. You have to deal with all the different specs, options, and prices on the hardware (or have someone else build it and hope you don't get ripped off), then every game has the question of "will it run on my PC? What settings do I choose for the best experience?" etc. A console, on the other hand, has one (or a few) set hardware SKUs, and when you get a game that says it works on the console, you know it will (in theory). There are lots of people out there who want to get a game and have it just work. I see the future of consoles being that they are essentially PCs with set hardware specs and a simplified UI or custom OS. If a developer wants to put their software on the console, they have to ensure it runs well on those specs and lock down the in-game settings enough to make an easy user experience. Basically, it would position the "console" as the lowest common denominator for PC development. In other words, I just described "Steam Deck Certified," but for the best/easiest user experience, the console would only allow certified software to ensure that everything just works.
Agree with all this, but the biggest factor for consoles is the lessened capability for cheating!!!!! The PC space has the vast amount of cheaters word-wide and it's become almost status quo to run cheats for so many that it's almost as if it's part of the OS. Consoles tend to lock out the OS and remove the propensity for cheating. Sadly, no game publisher is willing to put out games made for only consoles because they want that PC Money but that would alleviate so much of the rampant widespread cheating we have today that opening cross play brought with it.
@@theINQBS Cheating have been a big problem on consoles for 10-20 years too. Just look at scoreboards on a bunch console games. 999.999.999.999 points on first place have been a thing since PS3/360 days.

It feels to me as if Xbox is trying to bridge the gap between PC and Console and be the first to do it. They own Xbox, they own the OS for PC so they’re in a place to do it. But it’s odd because the consoles benefits have always been simplicity, ease of just turning on and playing. But with the addition of a more open OS it potentially opens up the possibility of the negatives of PC. Granted if it’s still a physical console it’s going to be spec’d a certain way allowing dev’s to easily develop their games to it. But with Sony dominating the console space, they must feel the need to innovate and merge their current practices. I worry what that may do for PC gaming. If you take some of the good of PC gaming and mix it with the good of console…
I’m wondering if say they did allow a Steam marketplace on Xbox, if they would try to limit what you could download. Like if a game came out on all platforms then you would have to download through the Xbox store if it was available. I doubt steam would allow that but it’s an interesting question.
I think one downfall this might have is keeping the graphical standards dormant across the board. For every counsel generation PC/Consoles have been in this cat mouse game of outdoing one another at least temporarily before PC outdoes then in a year or so. This is in part because of PS vs XBox competition with one another. If Xbox becomes PC there will be no competition or incentive for PlayStation to keep up or attempt to make any strides to try to outdo their competition and thus that part will be gone and instead will rely on the PC industry to set standards for graphics. Not to mention that Nvidia is more focused on making their Money from AI GPU's and have less of an incentive to upgrade their Gaming GPU's
However, with MS getting out of the console market, and shifting the focus back to PC's, nVidia will now have a bigger incentive to start creating GPU's again.
If that is possible maybe nit Sony might say that they can't do that like always but more people might just buy an xbox since you get both Playstation games and Xbox, PC games on one console
If it were running a true native version of Windows I'd assume it could work but then again a console/PC hybrid is still in direct competition with Sony. Most likely Sony would add their own launcher to their games so they can't be played on the hybrid XboxPC or a verification process. Sony's not going to just sit back and let their biggest competitor circumvent their exclusivity. If they did somehow manage to get bypass the exclusivity now I wonder how much does Xbox get from a game on Steam developed by Sony.
I love the idea of Xbox turning into more of a pc. I would say that almost everyday I wake and look at all the Xbox consoles I own. What would make the idea fantastic is if the “XPC” would make it compatible with EVERY Game that Xbox has ever had on disk. Sure they will still make a killing off of digital but think of the money they would make at their GameStop stores!!!😉
Around 60% of people play games on phones because it is always in your pocket. Xbox and Playstation are not portable and all the extra hardware to play a game is not what people want. After the new Xbox and Playstation everything will go portable and PC.

I my opinion, with the prices on consoles getting higher and higher, it is starting to make PC's more advantageous. Because, with PC's ability to run faster, higher graphics, and cooler than a console with prices not much higher than the console. That is the reason why I switched over to PC, I have and MSI slim laptop, with an Intel i7 processor, 32GB RAM, 1TB storage, and GEFORCE RTX 8GB graphics that I purchased for a little over $700 with tax. My games run better graphics and FPS, and it is portable, which lets me bring it to work and still play.
Next Gen Xbox as a full PC is something I've been championing. Imagine a kid being able to tell their parents that the Xbox they want for the Holidays is a PC they study and write their school papers on. All it would do is boost PC gaming and Microsoft Office use for a generation of kids.
I don't get all the drama around this news online. This was always the end result. I don't like it, but having physical games and a console to play them on will be seen as a niche market like vinyl and record players are now. How do most people consume their music, their movies and TV? Exactly. MS of all players know the future will be in cloud gaming, since they have been developing their own service for years now to be the 'Netflix', one of the first big players in that space. There is already a tidal wave of mini PCs and portable devices designed to take advantage of game-streaming. And they ain't $500. There will be a flood of devices trying to fill that spot in people's homes, and Sony will be the next to get out of the console game when they decide they don't want to compete with it.
Imagine when you get on your Xbox and have Steam installed. When you boot the game up, it auto adjusts to "Xbox Mode". As pointed at in this video, the PS5 and Xbox Series are based heavily on modern PC hardware far more than the tech used in pre-PS4/Xbox One era consoles. I want this! Open up the Xbox console to more content distributions to run on it.
PC has the flexibility to set up a game graphically the way you want it, and even fix problems that may not get addressed by the devs. KB&M as an option is a huge plus as well. Most things in UE 3-5 you can modified settings they haven't included in the options menu. Consoles might "just work", and that's good for the average end user, but they are far too locked down for a power user, or techie. I'm not against anything that supports gaming in general, but I'm definitely a PC person, and handheld isn't an option either for me.
Here's a crazy thought: The Xbox basically runs a cut down version of Windows with a DX12 GPU, technically there's no reason why it couldn't run titles from Steam. Imagine if they integrated a curated selection of Steam titles directly into the Xbox store UI. There's no reason why Microsoft couldn't integrate with Steam and make all the Sony PC ports playable on Xbox. It's weird to think about it, but Sony might have screwed up here a bit if this ever happens.
honestly exclusives need to just go away, keep the first party studios but port them to all platforms day and date. have the ultimate flex having a PS logo pop up on that launch screen someone playing on xbox and have that xbox logo pop on a playstation when the game launches. us PC players dont give a damn we just launch it and play it. microsoft and sony are corporations, they should want to make as much money but doing exclusives is dumb thats why im a happy pc player, im not locked behind stupid corporate bs moves and I have options and choices.
@@theconsigliere8463 In principal I agree, it would be best if everyone can play anywhere and on the hardware they prefer to play on. The problem is, I can't really see that happen. Sony makes too much money out of people using their ecosystem, they make a killing on the accessories like controllers and stuff, not to mention subscriptions like Playstation Plus. They also don't need to pay the 30% royalty that they have to pay to Steam on PC for example. And exclusives drive more people towards their platform which in turn makes them more money. Sony's move to bring their titles to PC is awesome, but again, I can't see them ever going day-and-date for the reasons above. If they did their own exclusive PC storefront where they take all the profit and basically force people to use official Playstation accessories like controllers on PC, it might happen, but I think for the time being things will remain as they are. As for Nintendo, it's even harder to imagine them ever putting their games on anything other than their own console. Xbox is in a different situation, their console isn't doing all that well if we're being honest, even Phil Spencer himself said they're in third place and there's no way they're going to out console Sony. So they're forced to go where the gamers are to be successful, which is why they're starting to release their games on PS5. If they're not going to be successful in the console space, then the next best move for them would be to become a big third party publisher. I have a lot of confidence that if anyone can beat the other big third party publishers out there, it's Microsoft. I just hope they don't end up adopting the same shady practices of companies like EA and Ubisoft in the process.
I think it makes sense for all consoles to be handheld with a dockable option with both digital and physical games avaliable for all personal preferences. Especially now we have the steamdeck, nintendo switch playing both ways is such a massive selling point. Saying that I do own an xbox for gamepass, a ps5 for exclusive games, of course graphically beautiful games and of course a steamdeck and nintendo switch to play some of my favourite games on the go which you can't do with stationary consoles. I wonder who will be first to being 4k in handheld also that would be such a massive selling point. But as of right now even tho switch is having issues its still out selling any other console worldwide on the fact you can play on the go
what backwards compatibility? a handful of games? PC is the best backwards compatible system, games dont expire on pc and dont need additional hardware to run them. most games on xbox and playstation are not even backwards compatible.
Before long you will only need one device to truly be your PC, console, TV, etc all in one component. We have the capability to do that pretty much right now but it's only going to get easier and whoever does it will obviously be in a real absolute dominant position and all. "build an xbox pc" kind of defeats the purpose of a console doesn't it? at the point just buy a pc and play xbox games on it, many are compatible. Also I don't know if i missed something but i was sure after the next console refresh microsoft are looking to move away from physical hardware.
Playing on consoles are better ,you just put the game in and play it, PCS was used to make or create the game, so you can do so much more, but you would need a high-end gaming computer to play these games,duh 🙄
what if Xbox worked with AMD and used FSR 3 but putting it on a driver level for not only their series s and x but for their older Xbox games and there Xbox 360 games. people might get the games that are on steam instead of the old versions but having the option would be a big game changer.
I think the idea of opening up the consoles to 3rd party marketplaces is a great idea (especially since physical media is dying), but I think they will have to be careful, too. Consoles are sold with the idea of "I plug it in, grab my controller, load my game, and it just works". None of the tinkering that's required with all but the most powerful PCs. I think opening up consoles as they currently stand to other marketplaces will work if the games are still curated as console games. Consoles are PCs are built and programmed very differently and playing a lot of PCs on the console hardware without it being ported for console will be a bad experience. If let's say epic games sells Avatar Frontiers of Pandora then that games code should be the consoles code. So even if you buy from an3rd party market you get the same game.
I’ve built pcs for my brothers and myself to game on and use bc it’s not just a gaming device, it’s a useful tool. If Xbox can make hardware that competes with powerful pcs that can run my Xbox,steam, and epic Libraries then they would mostly definitely get my business back when my computer becomes obsolete for gaming
Maybe just take the steam approach and make the Xbox OS. A stripped down windows OS for gaming only. There is so much garbage in windows that hurts gaming performance.
There is the problem the mindset that selling consoles is making you money we've seen Sony's profit margins get slimmer and slimmer while Xbox is making the right moves for long term sustainability and if Microsoft put windows on an Xbox with dual boot it's over they win

The idea of turning the xbox into a PC is fun in theory but we are seeing a ton of custom PC building, even on this channel, lately and a general "meh" attitude towards prebuilt stuff. An xbox console PC would suffer the same fate as something like the OUYA which while a cool idea was already behind the barrel in terms of specs compared to other things like it. No one wants to buy a "PC console" for $800 that is already obsolete a month after it's bought, especially when we see games update and requrements of those games go higher and higher so it becomes even less useful in the future.
@simonemezzacapo6544 Inflation...better/more expensive hardware to be compatible with less optimized PC versions of games...losing the ability to sell at a loss up front to make more money off software and accessories...etc. A PC console hybrid type of machine could easily be double the price of current consoles with GPU prices in the thousands for higher end versions. Even midrange GPUs cost more than an entire console. If these rumors are true, gaming is about to get a lot more expensive and therefore less accessible to consumers, especially in this economy.

I feel like I'm the only one that thinks an Xbox handheld would be a waste. The Xbox app already comes on the Ally/Go/Claw. Why would Microsoft put all the time and money into R&D for a new handheld, when everyone else is selling the handhelds for them, and they obviously get a cut thanks to Windows being on the machines. The only way I see an Xbox handheld being viable is if it is WILDLY good value. Otherwise I would just focus on improving the Xbox App, especially handhelds
What if Xbox is big move is framework for the games. So essentially you have the exact same game on PC and on Xbox. So if you buy it in a disc form you could put it in either one and run it or in a digital form and you could transfer it from one device to the other via USB
An Xbox with a pc mode sounds amazing, like the Steam deck with IS desktop Mode, they own the software and have the hardware, It would be a complete Game changer.
This is ridiculous. If Microsoft made a handheld that ran in XboxOS, but could switch into Windows (like how steamdeck has console mode and desktop mode), it would be the most dominant gaming platform on the market. They have the resources, capital, and incentive to make windows run well on a handheld machine, paired with decades of console experience. It would completely invalidate any other handheld, and take so much away from Sony and Nintendo. Why buy a handheld PC that isn't great at being a PC or a console that can't run steam, when you can buy one machine that does it all? At this point, Microsoft's failings are 1000% their own fault.

I think putting a custom version of windows would be a great thing. I mean a Xbox can play with mouse and keyboard it can be a glorified home threatre pc. Ppl have figured out how to put emulators on it pretty easily. Not much more than can be doing then allowing everything on Xbox. I would also like to see them open up gamepass even if it’s a slightly higher price to EVERY Xbox games. That would be a game changer to mobile users. U would have the regular gamepass games but u also be able to pay anything in your library on any device
My only beef with Consoles... they don't have enough power tiers. I would pay 1k for a better Xbox PC box. IF they offered it. Even if Acer or Dell or somebody built it. They should build boxes without windows. Computers are for one thing, gaming boxes could be for another.
Make Xbox monitors with series S built in as and option. Make Xbox PC and Handhelds. Or just give Xbox more Windows apps, Full Browser, and copy and paste.
if XBOX adds a "Switch to Desktop Mode" and FOR FREE instead of some dev mode subscription garbage thing. XBOX will be mine and a lot of my friends first choice. for 500 dollars a machine that can do all Windows things (it shouldn't have to be watered down) WHILE also having "Switch to Game Mode" that does everything XBOX already can do will be a Win for customers and XBOX as a whole in the long run. there's a reason why SteamOS/SteamDeck is amazing.
The biggest downside (for Microsoft) if they make XB more like a PC is on the internet... And is known as Green Steam. Look, I'm from Latin America... And here, people still are looking for moded 360 because I'm this side of the continent much people can't afford by games. Sometimes people forget how much the money values outside their countries. You know? Here in Mexico (for example) 70dls is more or less than people ear in a week of work. We can afford live with that amount of money, thing that doesn't happen in USA. Thats why our money perception changes so much, and if consoles become more like a PC, at least in some parts of the world, people isn't gonna buy games in the same way.
i've said this a million times, but if they make xbox a hybrid pc console, i'm back in to the platform! Haven't been since 360, since the xbox one got rid of console exclusives (day on date with pc) so this would make me want an xbox again! Come on Phil!
