Remember that this is just for entertainment, and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

I had to laugh today, one of my Patreon supporters commented on a video where I fail to fix something, they said “My Mate VINCE wouldn’t have given up so easily…” and they were dead right !

Great Job Vince, and good job on the sponsorship! A hall effect sensor usually has 3 connections, GND, VCC and output. The output voltage varies with the magnetism detected, so now you know how to test them :) on another note I got approached by a company to do a review on something so things might be looking up!
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince Год назад
Thanks Mick, I couldn't seem to get a voltage reading on them. I wonder if I should have been looking at millivolts on my DMM??? Happy to hear from you as I noticed your channel seemed a little quiet, taking a well deserved break over Xmas I presume. Good luck on the review and here's to lots of fixes in 2023👍
@BuyitFixit

@@Mymatevince Thanks Vince no they should be 3v or 5v. The output should vary from 0 to the supply voltage usually or slightly less. I've just been busy with car issues currently got the gearbox out of my car and crankshaft oil seal on the engine has gone. Also had a few trips to the hospital as had a pain in my side and seems I've developed kidney stones which I'm waiting to hear on results of a scan. But I'm fine apart from a few bouts of pain over Christmas. Just been trying to catch up a bit and get some content done 👍

@@BuyitFixit Hope the car repair goes well and you have a bit of cover from the elements. I know all about kidney stones as I was blessed with a kidney full of them. Luckily or unluckily I had the kidney itself removed so I never had to pass them which is supposed to be pure evil. Hopefully with drinking plenty of water and reducing salty food you won't get them back once passed👌👍
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Год назад
@@MymatevinceOh I never knew that. But I did you mention something on a video about having one kidney? I vaguely remember something. They said I had a 7mm one, but they did a scan again and said it's a 4mm and 5mm. Had another scan few days ago and awaiting results to see if I need an operation to remove them if they are still there 😧😧

What you need in the future is a preheating BGA station to pre-heat the board so the solder melts faster and doesn't damage the tracks and crucially the ICs .

Hi. I had the same situation with one of the triggers few days ago. It was constantly on like in yours. In My case removing a capacitor near the hall sensor fixed the problem. Hi Vince & The Cod3r have you considered using one of those cheap pcb board pre heaters used by mobile phone repair shops, often sold quite cheaply on AliExpress? I think if you had used that with a little kapton tape to protect the smd parts then this repair would of been quite easy. Not only that the small pre heater would come in use for other projects ;-) I sometimes cheap out on using the old Kapton tape and use the wifes tinfoil (bacofoil) to protect the smd parts.

Great job, Vince! I've repaired a couple of XBone controllers for my kids and the fault has always been a resistor, I think their parts quality is very low. One of the failed-open resistors I peeled the paint off and inspected had a teensy, but visible crack in the resistor element. **IDEA**: For testing SMD parts, I use something called 'tweezer probes' - they look like tweezers, but each prong is connected to a wire that goes to the DMM. This makes rapid testing of SMD parts very easy. Excellent video and channel, thanks so much for the entertainment! Cheers!!

The board is castellated, the majority of solder would be within the half-through-holes and not on what small amount of plated surface padding exist at the ends of those through-holes, you should have been able to use a wick to remove a majority of the solder that's there, if not all of the solder entirely. This kind of job is also where a hot plate is super, super useful, not only will it evenly heat (mostly, there are nuances) the entire area, but it also frees both of your hands for other work, not to mention their benefits for SMD, BGA, and components with fine pin pitches, and benefits over hot air stations and reflow ovens; GreatScott! and Carl Bugeja have some content on hot plates, designs are entirely DIYable considering price and quality can be concerns with what's currently on the market. Also, I've been able to find schematics, at least for 1708 and I'm not sure what else the creator has, but Columbia-Tech-Schematic here on RU-vid is a decent resource for schematics that otherwise aren't findable elsewhere, super useful for these more complex designs where things disappear into vias, not to mention having pinouts for various connectors and boards.

Always interesting to see these controller repairs. No two faults are ever the same lol! Very strange behaviour before the update - I was thinking maybe a bad solder point (perhaps around the module you replaced)? But the firmware update seems to have fixed it?!?! The resistor going open circuit is probably from a drop - a bit like ceramic caps they can be damaged by shock. Caps tend to short, resistors tend to go open circuit!
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince Год назад
Thanks Chris. I was originally wandering if the boards didn't match with the same firmware, but I don't think there is any chip of any importance on that other board near the buttons so it can't be that. So maybe it was thrown in rage and that damaged the chip and the resistor. Cheers mate👍
@VirtualSpeed
@VirtualSpeed Год назад
the problem removing the board is you are using a very narrow tip in the hot air station. In these cases where the area to work is larger, you should use a larger tip.
@Operational117
@Operational117 Год назад
9:39 The reason the thing only draws 140 mA is because of Ohm's law that states I = V / Ω. And 1 Volt across a 7 Ohm resistance path generates 1/7th Amps of current. The only way to increase the amperage in this case is to increase the voltage. 2 volts would generate twice the current (and four times the power). 12:06 You're right. Heating a conducting material increases its resistance. Every conductive material has a temp-to-ohm curve, and copper is no exception. Fun fact: each material has a so-called "critical temperature", where if the temperature goes below that, the conductor becomes *superconductive,* exhibiting zero electrical resistance (and, thus, theoretically being able to pass an infinitely strong current). Copper's critical temperature is 43 Kelvin (or -230.15 Celsius or 382.3 Fahrenheit).
