Short story, so we finally got the vehicle running after we purchased it with a blown head gasket and blown turbos. Shortly after first start after rebuild, the oil light came on and message saying:
NO OIL PRESSURE PULL OVER SAFELY
So, this video will show you generally how to remove the oil pan and pickup tube, what I did to remove them, what I used to clean them, and what I used to seal everything back up.
Some required tools:
-10mm for oil pan and pickup tube bolts
-10mm swivel socket (can be found at amzn.to/2BAzupN)
-18mm for lower engine torque mount: amzn.to/2RbpSM8
-14mm lower engine torque bracket
-17mm for long bolt of lower engine torque mount
-pry bar: amzn.to/2RckpV5
-rubber mallet
-grinder for cutting out tab: amzn.to/2RcpVHj
-a few large oil pans for draining oil and collecting sludge
amzn.to/2Cu05X4
-few cans of brake or carburetor cleaner
amzn.to/2Cv0OY8
-diesel fuel or kerosene for dissolving carbon sludge
-B12 parts cleaner for soaking oil tube:
amzn.to/2R6JBN1
-2 entire rolls of paper towels
-many pairs of gloves
-few shots of vodka
Some torque specs:
-oil pan (15 lb-ft for the 6 longer bolts, and 12 lb-ft for remaining 30 or so short bolts)
-torque mount to frame (75 ft-lb)
-torque mount long bolt (65 ft-lb)
Use Permatex Anerobic gasket maker for oil pan. Use new seals for pickup tube and oil pan, including new seals for oil cooler. Requires draining and refilling coolant when disconnecting oil cooler pipes.
*Note: My car NO LONGER has a metal screen at the pickup tube. After removing the pan for a second time, I decided to completely remove it. I believe the reason for the screen is so that the oil pump will not draw in any metal particles if something were to fail in the engine. However, I am willing to risk that nothing will break and let the oil filter stop all of the carbon particles from being fed throughout the engine. If something were to break internally, I will probably junk the vehicle for $500 or sell it.
Anyhow, I performed 2 quick oil and filter changes shortly after reinstalling the oil pan and pickup tube for the last time. First change done after running car for 30 minutes. Oil filter was filled with carbon particles. Replaced oil with 6 qt. of conventional wal-mart oil 5W-30 , 1.5 qt. of Marvel Mystery Oil, and fram filter.
Second change done after first 30 miles. Use same brand oil and filter and more Marvel Mystery Oil.
Next change will be done at 250 miles and then I will use full synthetic 5W-30 oil and premium filter. After that, regular changes will be done every 3,000 to 3,500 miles using full synthetic oil with 1 qt. Marvel Mystery Oil. This is to make sure this problem will never happen again.
Car runs great so far, runs smooth cruising at 70mph on highway. Passed CA emissions test on 10/4/18 after performing a drive cycle to reset engine ECM because computer will reset if battery is disconnected and in CA is automatic failure for emissions test.
Next I will service transmission fluid and filter as this transmission was replaced at 70k with new unit from Volvo dealer. Car now has 118k approx, so it is due for fluid and filter change. Then I will service front helical gear, front transfer case, rear diff, and rear haldex fluids. Then I will try to put at least 200k more miles to get my money worth. Only bought car for $750! Spent another $650 on parts and fluids thus far.

Great job! I have a 2001 V70XC with the 2.4T and I'm about to do this same clean out of the oil pan. The drain tube into the pan for my oil separator is clogged up. Yours was plugged solid and I'm sure mine is too. I ran a stiff wire into the opening on the block down into the pan but I can't get it free, so off with the pan.

Thanks for this video. I am getting a p2088 which is a VVT code. I'm also getting flashes of "low oil pressure, stop engine" on my display. I think this job is in my near future.

I hope that code you are getting is only for a cam sensor/ vvt solenoid and not for a jumped timing. These engines are known to jump time, meaning if the timing belt is old, or if some hard debris got into the timing belt area or if your waterpump has failed, your timing will jump or skip causing your engines timing to be off. If it jumps too much, the engine will damage the valves and you will need to rebuild that head. The oil pressure light was due to ther fact that Volvo's service manual recommended owners to change their oil at some crazy long interval, like every 10,000 miles. I would never do that even if I'm using synthetic oil and premium oil filter. The most I go with all my cars is 5,000 miles between oil changes. I'll be really honest though, after I cleaned the screen and as much of the oil pan as I could, the light came back on after I reinstalled everything. So I literally ripped out the entire screen and I've been running my xc90 that way for almost 4,000 miles now. I see no purpose for it because you have an oil filter which does the same job anyway and so I just took the screen all out with a fine pick. No more oil pressure warning lights for me!

@@bigmurff6439 Don't think so. Just double checked the timing last night and all looks good. I think I might have found the problem- as I watched one of your videos. Getting a CEL P2088 and ECM-6400 in VIDAS. Replaced the intake VVT solenoid part w/ no luck. Checked timing, seems good. Replaced oil filter and oil and pressure seems good now, at least there is no warning now. Looking at pictures on the internet almost all of them have a yellow band on the VVT Intake connector....mine is currently on the exhaust. Maybe just maybe I got them wrong when I put it back together when I had the head out. Didn't have hte problem before. I looked at a picture I took yesterday- sure enough the yellow band on mine is currently on the exhaust side. Hopefully tomorrow when I switch that takes care of it. Thanks for your videos, they have been helpful many times already. Was deep into your turbo videos last year as it helped me with something I was trying to figure out.

With the blown head gasket, could the coolant have mixed with oil to make that sludge? Great job Murff.

An easy way to clean this is to use CRC brake cleaner and a pressure washer. You can use the pressure washer to clear all ports. Sorry you had to do this job...it sucks.
@vinyltune1150
@vinyltune1150 4 года назад
Yes I suppose using high pressure can blast out all the crud along with using a powerful cleaning chemical like CRC. At that time I did not have a pressure washer, but I could have just gone to a car wash and use their pressure washer to clean that tube They now sell new updated versions of that tube on eBay I think so you can even just buy a new one if you don't feel like going through all that extra work.

Not a bad vid but ease up on the lecturing and rambling in the middle of the video. Also ditch the cheesy songs that are always too loud as they tend to be very distracting in a diy vid. Any tips, step by step info is the true meat of any vid like this so stick to that. All other info, opinions or rants can go at the end. This way your vids will grow in popularity and people won't have to scroll between less useful info to the job at hand.

I have a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust like oil burning smoke white smoke on idle only , I inspect the oil trap it was bad I replaced it and replaced the nipple also . I checked the passage with air was coming from the oil filling hole everything good put everything back together now it smoke just little at beginning for a minute. But I have this new message came no oil pressures. Do I drop the pan or I should check something else?
@bigmurff6439
@bigmurff6439 Год назад
Check the oil level. If dipstick shows full of oil, next you can check to see if oil pressure sensor is bad by removing sensor, and using a mechanical oil pressure gauge. If mechanical gauge shows less than 20psi at idle, then remove oil pan and clean oil tube. Link to locate oil pressure sensor is: workshop-manuals.com/volvo/xc90_awd/l6-2.9l_turbo_vin_91_b6294t/sensors_and_switches/sensors_and_switches_engine/oil_pressure_sensor/component_information/locations/page_1898/ But it sounds most likely that the oil pickup tube is blocked with debris and carbon. For that, you will need to remove oil pan. It would be much easier to buy new oil pickup tube online and probably the oil pan also than trying to clean it. Lots of work to clean as you can see from video. But if you have patience, you will save $300 on parts by manual cleaning parts

@Big Murff thanks a lot for your reply I agree since the pcv / oil trap was completely clogged I would think the tube in the pan is clogged also . I guess I will order new pan then .

@Big Murff the oil pan is over $500 😢 I'm thinking about to put the oil pan in small plastic tank filled with something the can take the oil and sludge away , like acid or something I don't know honestly acid sound like dumb idea .

I can not get the pan down, did you have to bend the hard PS line to get past the corner? I cut the tab as well but still can't get it to drop.

@@johnthegame69 I gave up and sold it! I think you have to try and raise the engine up in order to clear but I was over it and bought a 2005 diesel Golf!

Is this a diesel or gas engine? I would say, put diesel in the pan and clean it with a painters brush with like a 40cm long grip and an angled head.

Look at that. Look at that. It actually flows, look at that. Look at that. Look at that. It actually flows, look at that. So what the fuck was that? And removing the screen because it clogged up with all the junk in the engine doesn't seem like a smart solution. The problem is the junk, not the screen that's keeping the junk from being sucked into the pump.
