Captured on real Acorn Archimedes A3000 hardware (ARM2 at 8MHz) at 50Hz.
Unfortunately due to the crazy non-standard overscan screen mode (that seemed to be in vogue at the time) there is a strip missing from the right-hand side of the screen in the capture.

Nice to see and even more to hear that Desert Dream clearly also influenced other systems.

The music has a real early The Prodigy feel to it and I love it.

Yeah, one of the best Acorn ARM2 demos that was produced. Great music with slick design and graphics.

The ARM2 core @ 8MHz definitely packed a lot more power than the 68K CPU of the Amiga 1000, 500 and 600 machines, even without all the support chips the Amiga had... It's a pity it didn't have as much games released for the platform compared to the Amiga/Atari & PC machines of the time... If only Acorn knew what the future held in store for their excellent RISC CPU they designed... :)

It's because it wasn't designed to be a games machine. It cost about 4 times more than an Amiga. It just had no chance in that area. Acorn was trying to compete with the PC.

@@robertwilson3866 Sure, but the PC wasn't designed to be a games machine either, and it cost more than 4x the price of an A500 when the A500 was first released... (a decent PC, with a 286 CPU, VGA graphics and a SoundBlaster card). These were rare and expensive PCs back when the Amiga launched, which is why the Amiga was, early on, so popular for games, as it would give you pseudo-VGA (64 colors in half-bright mode) and pseudo-Sound (8bit stereo) all in a cheap package. As you said, Acorn was trying to compete with the PC, which at that time was nearly impossible due to the rise of many cheap PC clones. Still, Acorn s previous BBC Micro's legacy as a school/education machine provided Acorn a niche market for their RISC PCs, as schools could stick with their familiar teaching tools, eg the same BASIC language etc... Also, government expenditures on computer hardware is likely, if one is available, to be in a machine from that country itself, so the government can support it's national PC industry and make sure their expenses doesn't end up in another country's economy like the US, Japan or China, thereby pumping more money in it's own economy...

@@robertwilson3866 One thing though, I would have loved to have seen some games that use the RISC PC system to it's fullest, eg, not ports of Amiga/AtariST/PC games, but native games developed on and for the RISC PC. I've seen the one where you fly over a polygonal heightfield (can't remember what it's called), which was impressive, but I think the RISC PC would have been able to render more filled or shaded polygons per second than an Amiga with an 68000 or 68010/20

Nice. Similar to late OCS and early AGA Amiga demos.

The birthplace of the ARM architecture. Back in the 80s. Who needs them customs chips. But the CPU is doing the work tho... Still looks impressive. I want an A3000/A3010.

TXP did a good job both technically and in terms of bringing the demoscene attitude to the Acorn scene! One TXP demo I haven't seen on RU-vid yet is Blu. Do you have a copy?
@xyzzy3000
@xyzzy3000 4 года назад
If you do want to capture Blu on real hardware then you'll need a RiscPC with ARM6 or ARM7. It doesn't work on a StrongARM.

@@xyzzy3000 Alas I only have A30x0 machines. By the RiscPC era I'd moved on to x86 PC...

@@xyzzy3000 oh, I didn't know that one either. The "spinal column" part looks very cool. The rest so-so, but it looks like something went wrong with the capturing, I'm not sure.
