🤔 NEW HERE? 🤔
Hi! My name is Christopher Odd and I’ve been playing video games on the internet for a few years. I really enjoy a variety of games but generally lean towards games with a unique and engaging story (Bioshock, The Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us etc), strategy/roguelike games (XCOM 2 War of the Chosen, Darkest Dungeon, etc), and RPGs (Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Dragon Age, etc). Of course, I am always looking for great indie games too!

When they say "secret chapter of Space Marines", they mean it. No civilian is allowed to see a Grey Knight - any who do are summarily executed by the Inquisition. This is because a Grey Knight's sole purpose is to kill daemons, and knowledge of daemons is forbidden. Space Marines are technically transhuman. They are decked out in power armor and have special implants that not only enhance their physiology, but allow better interfacing with the armor. Also, all Grey Knights are also Librarians, meaning that they are Space Marines that have psyker powers. However, psychic powers in 40K are dangerous, as they pull their power from the Warp, the same dimension where the daemons reside. FTL travel also relies on entering the Warp, and is only possible through the combination of psychically gifted Navigators and the reality-stabilizing Gellar field. Astropaths are the experts of communication - they are also psychic. The Inquisition is one of the many powerful forces of the Imperium. Think of them as a combination between the FBI, CIA, and the NSA. They are constantly searching for signs of daemonic corruption, alien interference, and treasonous activity. They are rightly feared for having power that is only checked by their fellow inquisitors, with powers ranging from the ability to condemn civilians to life as penal laborers or lobotomized servitors without trial, to the dreaded Exterminatus - a command to bombard a planet until every last inch is reduced to ash. Planet-wide plagues are a sign of corruption from Nurgle, one of the four Chaos Gods. Nurgle is the god of despair, disease, and stagnation. He is surprisingly jolly, and genuinely loves all life. Unfortunately, that also includes all of the bacteria and fungi that plague those he loves. His greatest gift is the ability to ignore pain - many of his followers are walking masses of open sores and infestations, and they show no signs of discomfort, aside from occasionally itching themselves. This resistance to pain makes it so they tend to be slower than followers of other Chaos Gods, but also more resilient - there are many tales of disciples of Nurgle surviving being disemboweled.

Grey Knights have their own Librarians. They are even a class in this game but it is true all Grey Knights are psykers. Grey Knights don't always murder everyone. They also mindwipe some humans that have seen them and swear other space marine chapters to secrecy to never mention they exist even to brothers of their own chapters.
@shaoyukhoo7267
@shaoyukhoo7267 2 года назад
Addendum to OP’s explanation regarding the secrecy of the Grey Knights: while the general populace of the Imperium aren’t supposed to know of the Grey Knights because of their portfolio (fighting daemons and Chaos in general) and are subject to getting unpersoned in the most literal manner because of it (e.g. the aftermath of the First War of Armageddon, where the Inquisition purged the survivors for having seen the Knights in action against Angron’s invasion) there are several Imperial factions that are aware of the Knights’ existence and yet are not censured for it. The Blood Ravens Chapter of Astartes notably fought alongside them on Kronus, and the Space Wolves basically went apeshit on them after what happened after the First War of Armageddon (i.e. the Months of Shame).
@Avresem
@Avresem 2 года назад
@@shaoyukhoo7267 To build off of this, check out Stringstorm's "Months of Shame" video. It's an original song detailing the aftermath of the War of Armageddon. The song takes the form of an argument between the Lord Inquisitor Kysnaros and Logan Grimnar of the Space Wolves, and it has one of the best depictions of the Inquisition in it. (Kysnaros addressing the legions of heroic guardsmen and people that held the line against Chaos) "Though your actions were just, You know too much. Though the cause is now gone, The dark you brushed Left a permanent stain, You've become a risk. Though this wasn't your fault, You must be purged for this!"
@StrategicJordan

well used to be secret. after the great warp rift its all kinda out in the open now.
@SampoPaalanen
@SampoPaalanen 2 года назад
@@shaoyukhoo7267 Also it should be noted that most higher ranking people within are most likely aware of the existence of the Grey Knights in a basic way, as in they know there's Adeptus Astrades (the official name for the Space Marines) chapter called the "Grey Knights" and know their emblem, but that's everything they know about 666th chapter, after all the imperial ships at intro treated the Baleful Edict like it was your typical Space Marine Battle Barge. Granted all Space Marine chapters have things they don't want to become known outside of the chapter and some chapters like Blood Ravens or the Dark Angels are extremely secretive. Also I suspect that should be a situation where Grey Knights would have to show themselves to the regular imperial troops as part of a joint operation and mindwiping or purging those present would be impractical the Knights present at meeting would wear basic pattern power armor instead of the specialized gear Grey Knights typically wear, in which case they'd raise no questions there's something like 1000 or more Space Marine chapters so it's not really likely your typical imperial commander would know them all, especially since it's rare for a member of the regular imperial military to see a Space Marine let alone a Marine from specific chapter.

Hell yeah Odd 40k. Few things for a XCOM vet new to this game to know: 1) Marines hit what they shoot at. Aside from template attacks, friendly fire isn't a thing, and if you can see an enemy in range, you'll hit it if you shoot. No 95% misses in this game. 2) Be aggressive. Grey Knights, particularly Terminator suited ones, take their cover with them. Hanging out in cover will have the enemy chipping you and fading back into reinforcements while the bloom spreads, and things always go from bad to worse when the Bloomspawn hits. Get in their faces. You're bigger than they are (most of the time) 3) Overwatch in full cover has the annoying side effect of your unit stepping out of cover to maintain their field of fire, exposing them to enemies beyond their vision cone. Low cover can usually be fired over, making it a better choice for overwatch positions in the long run. 4) Go into the teleport strike abilities with your interceptors. Go into "Honor the Chapter" with Justicars. You'll thank me later. Max out medical abilities with Apothecaries. Purgators can be specced a few different ways to be useful, but their grenade abilities are hilarious. Have fun! I'll be here for every episode!

You forgot number 5) Your turn doesn't necessarily end when you run out of your initial 3 action points. Say for instance you use 2 moves on everybody to get close enough to an enemy patrol to attack it. You then use a third action on one guy to trigger the patrol, and Presto!, your knights all have their 3 actions back and the turn hasn't ended. It's also worth getting Hammerhands on your Interceptors for relatively safe early game seed extracting before going into Teleport Strike.

One important tooltip I think you missed, is that a unit can only go into the critical wounded state once per mission. So the penalty isn't just having 50% max hp until the of the mission, or only being able to do it only so many times per campaign. It's also how a unit dies on a mission. Tooltip at 19:15

I have a feeling you'll have a lot of fun tinkering out even your basic loadouts for your squad because there is a LOT of variety and nuance in this game. One thing you probably should know is that in the settings menu of all places, there is a glossary of what the different statuses and auto abilities actually do, and it's pretty extensive to try to remember, so it's a good thing to consult every so often.

To give some lore: Space Marines (or Astartes) in Warhammer 40k are genetically enhanced humans to become super soldiers. A single Space Marine is as strong as a modern tank. Space Marines are divided in large groups, each based on their "geneseeds", which is pretty much the base of their genetic implants. These geneseeds were created by the Emperor, from which he created his first 20 original Space Marine Legions. All current legions are based from one of the original 20. The Grey Knights are special because they are created specifically to fight against demons and the powers of Chaos. Unlike most other Space Marines, all (or most if I am not mistaken), have access to the warp, which is pretty much magic. In short, the Space Marines are tanks and the Grey Knights are magical tanks.

I do have one tip. The game heavily rewards you for playing aggressive. If you "2 AP into darkness" and trigger an enemy pod, you regain all AP for your squad. After an encounter, your soldiers automatically reload, so you don't have to spend an entire turn staying unengaged and reloading. I saw a streamer on Legendary difficulty finish an entire mission on the first turn. He used a combination of AP generation skills, teleporting, and executions (executions give everyone 1 AP). The enemy literally never got a turn.

In-case you didn't know, your AP points are refunded once you finish combat(Say you killed all trigger enemies) and your squad auto-reloads. You AP is also refunded upon discovering an enemy pod. This means you don't have to move as slowly as you do in Xcom. Melee is a "free action", if you move and melee, you only pay the AP points to move, which gives you a chance to finish fleeing enemies or strike a target again.

Hey Odd! Warhammer 40k is my favourite game of all time - been playing it over 20 years now. Here's a quick recap of things you should know, based on what I watched in this episode: #1 - You are fighting for the Emperor, the Imperium, and humanity. The Emperor took over as a totalitarian dictator over ten thousand years ago. He's immortal, and verges on the cusp of godhood. Even this did not save him from a terrible fate though. He was betrayed by his son Horus, who had become corrupted by the Chaos Gods, and injured to the point that the Emperor sits immobile and unable to communicate upon a special throne on Terra (Earth). The Imperium are absolutely NOT GOOD PEOPLE, but the Emperor foresaw this state of awful as being required to maintain the existence of humanity. #2 - The Chaos Gods are, well, GODS. They exist in a parallel universe to ours, called the Warp, or "the Immaterium" - it is a universe of immaterial things (pure thought and energy), as opposed to our universe, which is made of material things. However, our emotions and souls exist in the warp, and feed its denizens, which we call Daemons. In the time of Warhammer 40k, the scale of humanity's (and others) existence has made these denizens powerful enough to start entering into our world - creating the exact emotional suffering that feeds them. As the Immaterium is made only of thought and energy (not even time exists there), destroying Daemons in our reality just send them back to the Warp. They CAN and DO come back from there. If this is sounding a little contradictory (how is a universe without time affected by our universe, which has time?), that's because the Warp is a great big ol' PLOT DEVICE. It can do anything and everything. If the game says "because of the Warp", just nod and go with it. #3 - The Imperium is made up of a lot of different people. You've met Lunete, who is a member of the Adeptus Mechanicus. In the future, after multiple golden ages and dark ages, hyper-advanced technology has become its own kind of religion. In this sense, Lunete, who is legitimately a Tech Priest, can be thought of as a Mechanical Wizard. She is likely the only one on that ship who knows how to fix or build or repair many parts of it. Yet even she may not know everything about it (that ship is, itself, likely thousands of years old). It is in this delicate balance of "know enough to do everything" and "still doesn't know critical things" that is why the Priests of Mars so incredibly jealously guard technology. Vakir is a member of the Inquisition - a secretive organization that are nevertheless one of the highest authorities in all of the Imperium. One of them can order the death of a planet. They are very used to giving orders, and them being followed. A Grey Knight is allowed to disobey their orders, though it is is rare that one ever would. Vakir speaks out of term with Ectar, though only because she knows she can, and is used to being obeyed without question. I'll make sure to cover more as we come across it during the game to help out anyone curious! The lore of Warhammer 40k is a huge amount of fun, with a lot that is actually easily accessible at just a glance, but with a huge amount of depth behind it for those brave and willing to swim deeper.

Grey Knights are the chamber militant of the Ordo Maleus (Demon Hunters), designate Chapter 666. Space Marines were created under the Emperor's direction from His primarchs' (his sons) DNA, but Grey Knights are the only ones who have those implanted directly from the Emperor's DNA, making them the purest, most powerful psykers among the Astarters, and virtually incorruptable. Their wargear and power armour is also leagues above any regular Astartes. On top of that, more than most of them know their enemies' (demons) true names, and wear/carry banners, purity seals, relics, and other trinkets, that greatly disturb any nearby demonic entities, making them barely able to withstand the mere presence of a Greay Knight. I think Chaos Gate nailed it in terms how a squad of elite knights would operate, espacialy the Justicar, the Interceptor, and the Terminator Libby, who are by far my most favorite classes. Both the Purgation dude and the Purifier are equally good, and well designed too, the rest is kinda take or leave, but at least all seem pretty faithul to the lore. If I really had to nitpick, then I'd say I'm slightly disappointed by the Paladin, perhaps? It's hard to balance a unit that is supposed to be the most elite even amongst the ranks of absolute madlads such as Grey Knights, so they made him really good at everything, but not excellent at anything in particular. Don't get me wrong, it makes sense both mechanically, and I guess lore-wise, but in such a higly tactical game like this, where you really want to make the most use out of every available resource and asset, he feels kinda underwhelming. To me at least, but maybe I'm just noob.

Many others have explained the relevant bits about the Grey Knights and their mission. But it's probably good to explain what the Imperium of Man is. The Imperium of Man is a galaxy-spanning fascist theocracy, that controls around a million worlds. (The exact number of planets/systems it controls is difficult to deduce, because of the sprawling and dysfunctional bureaucracy intended to administer it). Its various systems are largely run by planetary governors, who rule more or less as feudal lords. Though various factions within the Imperium control and influence parts of the empire, from the Administratum (the aforementioned dysfunctional bureaucracy) to the Inquisition (the secret police rooting out aliens, heretics, and traitors) to the Ecclesiarchy (the church devoted to the God Emperor of Mankind) to the Adeptus Mechanicus (techno-monks that maintain the ancient and poorly understood technology, mixing true maintenance with religious ritual; the weird cyborg running the ship in this game is a tech-priest from that organization) to the Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard, the regular soldiers), among others. The Imperium was founded around the year 30,000 (30K), by the Emperor of Mankind. The Emperor was/is a psyker of seemingly godlike power, who arose on Terra (Earth) following the collapse of human civilization and the period known as the Age of Strife. (The Age of Strife, in brief, was when the formerly prosperous galactic human civilization fell apart due to a combination of robot rebellion, the rise of uncontrolled Psykers, and the destabilization of the Warp due to Reasons, that made interstellar travel impossible for a time and treacherous even when it became possible again). The Emperor conquered Terra from its warring bands of techno-barbarians, using a combination of his personal might, armies of normal humans, and his legions of elite, transhuman warriors. The latter of which include the Astartes, or Space Marines. With Terra reconquered and an alliance forged with the tech-priests of Mars (who saw the Emperor as the Omnissiah, the material avatar of their Machine God), the Emperor pushed out to conquer the galaxy for humans. Crushing any resistance and slaughtering countless alien species/civilizations, using his growing armies and ever-expanding legions of Space Marines. Something something Primarchs, something something Webway Project. When the "Great Crusade" was nearing completion, the Emperor withdrew to Terra for Reasons, leaving the war in the hands of one of his Primarch sons, Horus. The latter, falling under the sway of the Ruinous Powers of Chaos (the Dark Gods of the Warp, and their tides of Daemons), proceeded to sway half the Space Marine legions and half of basically every other Imperial faction into joining his rebellion. The resulting civil war came to be known as the Horus Heresy, which ended with Horus killed, several loyalist Primarchs killed, the traitor legions falling to Chaos completely, countless lives lost, and the Emperor being mortally wounded. The Emperor was consigned to a life supporting Golden Throne on Terra, where he rests comatose 10,000 years later. His mind presumably locked in psychic combat with Chaos, and working at every moment to stop Terra from being destroyed because Reasons. Due to the Emperor's martyrdom and because Reasons, he came to be worshiped by the Imperium as a god. (Despite him not desiring religion to be a thing in his Imperium, because Reasons). Due to the persistent threat of Chaos, outside alien threats (Orks, Space Elves, _Eviler_ Space Elves, Space Robot Mummies, Space Dwarves, Space Bugs, etc), and internal threats like rebellions (legitimate and manipulated from the outside), the crumbling Imperium is constantly at war. Hence the tagline, "In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war."

Glad to see you playing a WH 40K game! The lore is intimidating at first but it is on so rich. Really hope you enjoy playing chaos gate. I'll be watching this series for sure.

Subscribed at the grandmaster mode. I never played xcom but main grey knights so I preordered this with the full intent of tackling it. It is definitely one of the most frustrating games in terms of difficulty that I've played in a long time.

There's something very exciting about watching someone play this who doesn't know the lore that well. I still remember when I first played the original Dawn of War games, which was my introduction to the 40k universe and playing that before actually knowing the setting was a lot of fun. Very much looking forward to this series, especially seeing it on Ruthless as I've only played it on Normal so far.

If you like Spell Swords, then you would like the Grey Knights. You don't GET to be a Grey knight unless you are a powerful psyker who is incorruptible. Apparently there is a weird bit of retcon. It was once said the Grey knights killed a troop of The Sisters of Battle in order to purify themselves with their blood.......which is fing horrible and someone later realized "Yeah we really don't want the grey knights to be THAT morbid"

I can tell you 2 things I know about Warhammer 1 the lore and story aspect of the games is insanely addictive and 2 the orcs are for all intensive purposes a type of sentient mushroom . the most the games will tell you is there a type of fungus or come from a type of fungus that infests planets and once there on a world it's imposable to get rid of them . the best I can say is have fun these games can be a blast to play and last a long time so hang in there and just have fun

Chris, if you ever wanna learn more of the lore of 40k, there is a great podcast called Adeptus Ridiculous. It is a chill one where they go over different characters and groups and the lore behind a lot of 40k. If you ever need something to listen to while editing or while doing errands or whatever, it is great for it! Great video and I hope you enjoy the game as much as I do! Edit: Also, a side note. The Grey Knights are sort of like the secret chapter of the Space Marines. They are barely known to the outside world, and only inquisitors and other chapter leaders really know of them. They are trained to fight demons and all have super powerful psychic ability. Usually if they arrive on a planet to fight demons, anyone who witnesses them is considered lost and will be purged as well. So if you were a guardsman fighting chaos and the grey knights arrived to save you, they are probably gonna kill you too.

Hey, I was really hoping you were going to pick this up. You playthroughs are literally what sold me on buying/playing xcom 2. I was eyeing this as well since I've heard a lot about 40k, but I'm also an outsider. Especially looking forward to these first couple episodes since I'll probably play this difficulty.

Here's your lore dump from a 40k player Dominus is a rank for a tech-priest. Linette is actually VERY social for a tech-priest. Most of them have largely discarded any pretense of acting "human". The inquisitor wouldn't make a great squad mate, despite looking badass. She's at best a lightly augmented human - Space marines have over a dozen specialized implants which are incompatible with women (due to being derived from the male emperor). Every Grey Knight has to meet the following criteria, each of which is incredible rare: Space Marine, Psychic, Immune to Chaos corruption.

Heck yeah! I have finished this game but have been wondering of Odd was going to play it too. I look forward to watching you tackle it. As a 40k nerd I enjoyed the story and voice acting, as a tactical gamer I enjoyed the lack of RNG and the different classes. The devs have put out a balance patch to nerf a few killer combos but still a good amount of depth to the play.

as you may have figured out already, this game is far, far more aggressive than X-com. You are rewarded for kills with more AP so it's generally a good idea to dive into the middle of a fight and hack as many enemies as you can. As some other commenters have mentioned, you are on a bit of a timer too so hanging out in cover is not necessarily the best option. There is plenty of healing through the apothecary and servo skulls, plus lots of armor to soak damage.
