My son is 8 but not sure if he's ready for this. He's watched entire anime series but Xenogears has alot of advanced terms he definitely won't understand. I first played it when I was 12.

It was also supposed to be a sequel to Chrono Tigger before it became its own independent game.

The xenogears story is a combination of Gnosticism and Kabbalah. Zohar is one of the books of kabbalah. Sephirot and yggdrasil as used in the xeno games are both terms for the tree of life. Many of the character names are from these teachings also.

@@yungxama1606 Gnosticism is the foundation for the new age religion and pretending you can aspire to be god. Fei and elly transcending humanity at the end is a gnostic's wet dream. This whole new age religion is nothing but Gnosticism and Satanism wrapped up together. The symbolism is clear, the cube of the zohar representing Saturn (Saturn has a cube on its north pole, Saturn is the reaper, he is death, he is the god of time aka the prison of matter, aka Chronos) aka Satan being the bringer of evolution to humanity, which is what gnosticism teaches. This game is essentially Satan worship.

A trope that has been used so many times in JRPG and anime. What I found so interesting about Xenogears is tge psycology of Carl Yung in there, which is all about growing closer to your true future self and defeating your shadow self which is represented in ID in Fei. I think its super shallow to just dismiss the game as satanic workship haha as it has far more levels to it then the end part of it which is defeating god or Deus.

I picked up xenogears and parasite eve on my birthday in 98 it was the best birthday day ever.

I remember this time period well as I was finally working and could buy all the games I wanted. I hit 18 years old just as the Dreamcast entered the fray in 1999 and I went absolutely nuts. Here is a list of some of the greatest games ever released in 1998 and brother I had most of them. ;) Big PlayStation releases for '98- Castlevania Symphony of The Night (might have been 1997), Xenogears, MGS, Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, Einhander, Tenchu, Brave Fencer Musashi, Parasite Eve, and Thunder Force V. Here are the N64's big games for '98- Body Harvest, Bomberman 64, Cruise N' USA, Cruise N' World, F-Zero X, Forsaken, Nightmare Creatures, Quake, South Park, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, Vigilante 8, and Wipeout 64. I would list the Sega Saturn games for 1998 but as you likely already know that Sega closed the books on their 32-bit machine here. I loved the Sega Saturn so much and even though I had the other two I was very saddened by its untimely death.

If we remember correctly the names were legitimately changed from one translation to the next so it depends on which version of the game you played. It's been long enough that we don't remember which version of the characters names we used.

Yep the version of this game i've played had them named Krelian and Miang. I've played the North American version. Still have my copy and they of course have the same names. Don't know where Caroline and Maya came from. Could be the Europe release?

Childhood's End (2001 Space Odysey author) has a character Karellen with a similar role, likely to avoid getting sued.

@@TrueMastersandMorons one would be the story befor the game. There are mobile games and crises core that i never got to really see and understand how things got going. Plus a few of the characters like the ancients, genova, red 13, vencent, the shinra army soldier unit, the different summons you can get and sephiroth.

Episode 1. Zohar , deus and Galactic war Episode 2. Deus crashes , Able and Elly . Episode 3. Kim and Elly, episode 4 Lacan and Elly episode 5 is the current events in the game episode 6 I don’t remember. Lol it’s all in perfect works. The game never tells you episode 4 is Lacan turning into grafh but perfect works does. Hope this overly simplistic explanation of the story helps

Sam Reddig Gaming no it’s not. Xenosaga you can make a very good case is Episode 1 of Xenogears, but due to square owning the rights to gears they changed the story around. Blade/Gears are not in the same multiverse

Spiritual successors. You could argue that the zohars/conduits link all the games' universes, but that would be retconning.

Zohar/conduit, persons from a higher dimension trapped in a lower one, fantasy settings giving way to scifi, towers of babel, ancient civilizations, some of which look like ours, ancient advanced technology, living supercomputers that take on biblical roles, characters with split personalities, scifi reinterpretations of biblical myths, scattered tribes of Israel, the Gnostic God and Demiurge, penitent scientists kept alive on nanomachines trying to rebuild or transcend the world...

Depends on the translation you played. There are two sets of accepted names for most of the characters. I believe the two you mention there are the two names for the different translations, but we'd have to look it up to be sure.

First, thank you. Second. For what it's worth, Xenogears is an old enough game that some characters had different localized names, so depending upon where you're reading or what copy you were playing, some names changed. For instance Krelian and Karralen. We decided to use the same sets of names (IE: all japanese or all english), since there were multiple sets. We don't remember which set Karralen was from, English or Japanese, but it's the same as the rest of them, so for example Myyah is from the same language set as Karralen and the language set for Krelian would have had a different name for Myyah. Hope that washes any lingering bad taste from your mouth :)

You are correct, Karralen was the Japanese name (as was Myyah) Krelian was the English name (and for the other character, Miang)

Krelian, as it was localized, is a modified version of Karellen, that name is taken from a character from Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End, one of the main influences to Xenogear's story.
