In this video, we are going to go over how to Xeriscape (or zeroscape) a part of a yard. You can apply this method on any section of your yard, just use a little creativity!

Xeriscape is a type of landscape design that uses low-water-use or drought-tolerant plants that require little to no supplemental irrigation.
Zeroscape is a yard filled predominantly with gravel and dirt containing few or no plants. Xeriscape uses design and planning. Zeroscape lacks design and planning.
Really it's as simple as digging out 1-2 inches of dirt so the rocks don't sit up so high.
Digging up the dirt will also dig up some of the weeds that are ready to sprout out and ruin your fresh landscaping.
Then go ahead and lay down some plastic or fabric. Use plastic if you don't plan on planting plants and use fabric if you plan on planting something. The fabric will allow water and nutrients to absorb into the dirt and get to the plant roots. The plastic will restrict this.
Lastly, lay down the rock! IT'S THAT SIMPLE. Almost as simple as hitting that SUBSCRIBE button!

it's XERISCAPE: pronounced "zeeriscape," not "zerOscape." From the Greek root "xeri" meaning dry or desert

If you buy some rebar, slice it to suitable length, and drill holes in the timbers, you can hammer the rebar down thru the timbers into the ground to anchor the timbers. They'll stay in place longer that way... Looks nice!!!!

Putting your timber borders right on top of the plastic barrier defeats the purpose of putting sand down to help drainage.

Very nice, I wish I had watched this before I added landscape fabric under my rock area, as it is now covered in weeds! even with 3 inches of river pebbles in it!

Haha same here, which is why I've now switched. I've seen videos where you can blow torch the weeds away, maybe try that?

Some kinds of weeds can grow straight through weed fabric, such as yellow nut sage, and Bermuda. Landscape fabric is often times incorrectly used, it should never, ever be placed below wood chips/bark or anything that will decompose. Otherwise after a couple years you have landscape fabric with 1-2 inches of nutrient rich top soil on top.

How does it do in rain? I'm thinking with that impermeable plastic it becomes a lake and forces more erosion where its not meant to be? Sorry to sound like a pain... great video though

That looks great but I think the plastic might be a mistake, I think water will pool in the stones, I found second hand carpet (the kind with woven back not the foam back) works well to supress weeds when covered with stones or bark chips 👍

Carpet is probably a good alternative because it's heavy and thick enough to compress plant growth. Good idea! I am making sure to not use plastic too close to house foundations and so far everything has been sloped. Hopefully I don't start smelling sitting water! 🤢

That's good, I've used old carpet in the past and it worked well for years stopping plants from below, You still have to remove windblown seedlings

I strongly advise against plastic. Non-biodegradable feed the argument of “climate change” and I, for one, feel sick and tired of hearing about it. Hemp-plastic. Also, by removing the weed seeds or applying an herbicide, inhibitors alike, the use of plastic goes away. I spend at least five minutes a day weeding. Otherwise, great work! Looks clean and value xeriscapes because if you want to plant; planting natives means no additional water. 👍🏼

Hey Jacob, I agree. The image in the thumbnail was actually done with an environmentally friendly weed block and I'd prefer to be "environmentally clean" but I ended up having to weed every day anyway. Probably should have used more herbicide. The plastic was a game changer.

Sweet video just discovered the term Xeriscape but its exactly what ive been wanting to do in my backyard. Do you have any suggestions when it comes to removing the old dead grass? Idk if I should just use a dethatcher or power rake and try to remove as much as I can then continue or try and dig it out completely and start the project on pure dirt.

I thought that xeriscaping was planting native plants that don't need to be watered for a lush garden instead of water hogging grass, not just throwing a bunch of rocks on the ground. I still see plenty of water hogging grass in your video.

I use blackstar gravel for this look. It's about $90 for a truckload which I believe is a cubic yard.

Ok 50 Cent question. Mine was done with not too great fabric and failing. I am redoing. I prefer fabric to plastic due to monsoonal issues. Any thickness or brand you know I may not KNOW ABOUT? stuff AT LOCAL hd IS PURE TISSUE PAPER. i am using 3/4 rock.

After a few years of messing around with this now, I'd say the best bet (for a reasonable price) is to spray the bare ground with weed killer, lay down some newspaper/magazines/cardboard, and then place a mid grade weed barrier fabric on top. Dirt is always going to eventually settle on top of the fabric and weeds are inevitable, but this will give you quite a bit of time.

Use agricultural membrane(plastics) to help soil breathe and takes water. Then you wouldnot kill soil and would use later. And also that plastics keep water and your pebels will be floated by heavy rain 😎😎

Yea, definitely. This was done in Austin which is fairly humid. I have applied some weed preventer this past spring to help even more.

I wouldn't use chemicals to kill the weeds, it is just going to hurt the little ground water we have left and using plastic doesn't let the soil breath, we want what ever rain we get to get into the soil. I am glad so many people are removing lawns and replacing with rock and native plants.

This is really zeroscaping, not xeriscaping. Xeriscaping should contain drought tolerant plants, at best no less than plants in a traditional garden. This gravel-on-weed-fabric antipattern doesn't work for long, since dirt and seeds accumulate in the gravel. Especially if the climate isn't really dry desert. People do this in humid parts of Europe, in Germany or even UK, in hope to get rid of garden maintenance, and cheaper than paving all over. But it doesn't work, and is illegal according to many legislations.

That plastic with deteriorate in two years EASILY...use professional uv grade plastic.folks..or professionsl landscape.fabric not big box.crap .go to a farmers.supply . Costs more but worth it.

I just want my lawn replaced with concrete or asphalt, whichever is cheaper. Fuck lawns, fuck yardwork. Too much work for "zero"scaping. Trees suck ass too.
