1) Have Fun with Curves.
Pull the landscape beds AWAY from the house to create depth and interest
2) Add a few FOCAL POINTS
In this example, we had some “Happy Little Accidents” by putting in some Cherry Trees to create height and interest. *That was not my intention at the beginning of the design…hence the “happy little accident”
3) Bust out the old Concrete Walkway and Install a Paver Walkway
Pavers come in so many varieties and patterns that it’s hard not to fall in love with them and BOY do they add Curb Appeal!
4) Updated the Mailbox
So many times, the mailbox is overlooked, and it can make such a difference in your curb appeal by incorporating the mailbox into your landscape design. Try it out!

Hi Tori. I'm so glad I saw this message because I'm about to do a design by a pool using this "point perspective" design technique and wasn't going to record my screen. I will make sure to do so. Also, if you haven't subscribed please do. I will have new videos starting Feb 15th, 2022 that will have the entire process from design to finished product coming out and they are going to be awesome! Happy holidays!

Landscaping is harder than it looks. I can't do much of it anymore and have to ask my kids to help or hire the work out. I had my son help plant last year and he hated it, he mentioned yesterday how he never realized how hard it was to dig a several small holes. Regardless of how much he hates yard work he helped dig 8 more holes this year, he is a good son😊

One thing you mentioned at the end of the video was about working and getting hot. As a home gardener, for the sake of your plants and yourself, never plant in the heat of the day. Early mornings or early evenings keep both you and your plants safe and happy. That's also the best time to water your plants. Great video! And happy planting!
@BobbyKDesigns

@Katee Such a great point!!! To all those in the community… I’d say the best time to plant is in the fall but if not then the spring. Planting in the summer is definitely a difficult task.

When it comes to trees, I’d recommend confirming your foundation wall isn’t having issues of planting within branch a few feet. Roots can contribute to weakened cmu and which once weakened enough will cause water intrusion. Might not seem like an issue the first few years but later down the line, when the trees are branching against the home, you’ll know the roots are digging the same amount. Just a reminder

Plus you paid yourself in the savings along with the intangible benefit of the feeling of accomplishment. Good for you. I think his point is valid in scenarios where the DIYer has earning potential that exceeds the cost to hire it done. Or in cases where the homeowner can’t physically do the work (age, disabilities, etc.) but not in the case where I just don’t want to do it because it is hot outside..

@@BobbyKDesigns EXACTLY, if i sell my place someday, because it's well located and looks great from the outside, people will see its potential. Also, before planting trees near your house, check how long the roots of the tree can get before. Some trees have root systems that branch out, not a tap root looking for water and can grow under your homes foundation, causing cracks!

This yard looks amazing now. Hopefully the owners can maintain it. My daughter bought a home built in the 1950s late last summer and the yard definitely needs to be refreshed. It's not " nasty ", but has been neglected. The previous owner loved to garden and in fact had a greenhouse in the backyard. When the previous owner died, his sons did not have the time to maintain all the shrubs, trees and flowers he had planted and although they paid someone to mow the grass, everything else was left to grow wild. Right now my goal is to get it to " boring " for just my time and labor. I have been pruning hydrangea bushes, hibiscus plants, removing old overgrown azaleas and finding all kinds of bulbs while digging out too many Rose of Sharon saplings. My advice to DIYers .... keep it simple enough to maintain yourself or simple enough to be affordable to pay someone to maintain it.

@Ginger Davis - completely agree! We moved into our home on 2 acres last year and are so overwhelmed (our previous home was on about 1/3 of an acre and even that we didn't know what to do with...) A lot of the land is wooded, but a lot is overgrown and really just ugly. Sounds like a similar situation where the previous (original) homeowners weren't able to maintain it as they grew older. So now like you said we're just trying to get to a blank slate so we can figure out what to do. And for us I know that the lower-maintenance (relatively speaking) the better. Good luck to your daughter in her new home!!

Cherry trees bloom for a couple weeks if you are in the right zone. Those hydrangeas have some epic ph levels. Cherry trees - early spring, hydrangeas late spring-summer- and it looks like some autumn ornamental grasses. I feel like this is over selling & under delivering for a client. Just feels fantastical and unrealistic- but I love the shape of the bed - the general concept of various heights, and the mailbox

Cherry trees are gorgeous and put on a show in early Spring. I have a 15 y/o Yoshino cherry that gets lots of photos taken by passers by every year. But choose them wisely, as these trees are not too tall but can be wide. Give them plenty of space to grow and don’t plant them too close to the house.

Yes, soften the edges of the lawn…it’s been said that nothing in nature is in perfect lines, but has curves to it. To figure out the curves of the planting bed(s) you want to add, lay out a pliable garden hose to represent the curved look you want. You can change it until you’re satisfied with the look. Doing it yourself is extremely satisfying. 🌻🌷😊 P.S. Try not to make the curves too extreme so the mowing along the bed is easier.

Very beautiful tasteful design! I may use some of these ideas :) Re money, you can budget this type of plan over a few years. Start with planting the larger impact trees & shrubs; mulch beds, then gradually fill in with smaller shrubs & perennials. Many you can affordably start from seed or cuttings. (Sometimes blank canvases are a blessing ~ ever try removing someone else's diseased or unattractive shrubs? And dig out the roots? Then haul away & dispose the mess? It's very hard work compared to starting from scratch. Which is also hard work but much less so, from my experience. Especially if you re-plant small less expensive shrubs & trees & you're willing to be patient for 3 years for some to explode with growth & beauty. The time passes fast though & it's a great spring/summer morning when you look out the window & say Wow!! Look at that! 🌹🌿)

I bought a house in a nice gated community that hadn’t been lived in for 2 years (the owners lived in China and owned multiple empty homes and mansions across the US). I did exactly what you suggest but all by myself except having two massive oak trees removed and replaced in a new area so they wouldn’t grow into the plumbing or lift the driveway. Since I have St Augustine grass I aerated, added nitrogen and let the torrential downpours do their magic to make it spread. I put in nice solar lights, tons of black mulch with metal edging and did it pretty much all by myself since I was single. My HOA is super relaxed on grass length so I let it grow and cut it at the highest length keeping it plush and bright green. I inherited a bunch of fancy rocks from a neighbor who was updating their landscaping and thought they would match my home better than theirs which saved me over $2K had I bought them new. In addition to getting the front yard looking fabulous, I was also able to convert my entire back yard into a food forest which is filling out nicely over the past couple of years. I put in lots of no-dig gates and bird netting to protect the berries and tomatoes from being picked at. I also lined my 12 foot brick wall along the back with an espaliered orchard of apples, peaches, figs and loquats. The advice I give everyone who wants to do it themselves is to break it up into smaller tasks and take your time. Enjoy what you’re doing and don’t burn yourself out or go into debt. It took me from November of 2020 until now to get everything where it is and it happened in stages. The best part about doing it yourself is that you develop habits of maintenance and you’re mindful of how much work it will take to maintain in the future. I’m so happy this video found it’s way into my feed as it validates everything I thought I figured out and I hope more folks follow the advice you put forth. It’s so rewarding to babystep your way into a gorgeous outdoor space you can be proud of. 🤗

We just bought an ex rental. It’s as boring as I’ve ever seen a big house and garden look. I haven’t taken official possession of the property yet but have already been researching plants and thinking of some design ideas. We have driveways and gates to put in first but I can’t wait to get my hands dirty. I’m in my 60’s and have always designed and built my own yards and home interiors. My first house I had no choice, I was a single mum, 23 years old and broke. I did it and decided never to pay anyone else for something I am capable of doing myself, and I can have exactly what I like. My new one will be a challenge, it’s my biggest home frontage and I love this design you have created, very inspirational and not a budget breaker. Thank you.

Your work is inspirational Bobby! Back in 2004 a Canadian magazine called MoneySense had an article for homeowners investing in landscaping, particularly when selling. A Laval University found that quality landscaping increased the value of a typical bungalow in a middle-class neighborhood by up to 15%. According to the study, a tree boosts your home's resale value by up to 9%. It cited a "general rule" to recoup your investment when you resell your home, and restrict your landscaping budget to no more than 4% of your residence's value. This % would change if you are in a high-end neighbourhood. I'm a new sub!

My ex husband did the lawn and I did the the flower beds and gardens. This is a doable project, but you need a helping hand. My yard guy moved so I'm doing a lot now by myself, it's just going to take a little more time, but I got the main things out the way. If you enjoy outdoor work, then this is a project for you, if not hire someone. This gave me a few more ideas around the mailbox, as I have a ton of them when I'm working in the yard. Very nice change and the software program is the bomb!

Great video! That’s so cool that you can show us everything on a computer image! And your so right about second guessing your DIY decision once your ass is out there in the 100 degrees summer sun digging up sod! That’s about the point my bf and I said, “ F- it! let’s just hire someone!” Lol!😂😂 We did end up finishing and I’m so glad we did because it gives me such a good feeling to walk out my front door or pull into my driveway and look at my beautiful garden beds.. it fills me with so much pride🥰

If a paver walkway isn't done right, professionally, it won't hold up and will look cheap! I don't consider this a DIY project unless you know what you're doing. Overall, this design is nice.
@BobbyKDesigns
@BobbyKDesigns 2 года назад
Bonnie B I couldn’t agree more. I think everything in this design can be done by the homeowner with some time and patience but I would contract out the paver walkway because over time it probably will sink if not done by a professional. I’m not saying that it can’t be done but this would be one spot I would hire a pro. Thank you for watching and thank you for the comment. 🔥

would be nice to see another mid century type house where you not only do the front yard that's in front of the house (as you did here ) but also the lawn area on the other side of the driveway (that's most typically a narrower strip and usually adjoins a neighbor's lot and merges w/ their lawn ).....🙂
@BobbyKDesigns
@BobbyKDesigns 2 года назад
Hi Marjorie!!! That’s a great suggestion for another video. One thing that I would suggest to separate the two lawns is to create a bed in between the two properties and landscape it. That would be a way to clearly define the space and separate the two lawns.

I like to do my own gardening and such and I can add my own sod and sprinklers. Plant plants etc. I just re did my whole front yard. I used a designer and Hardscape company, I can always tell when a homeowner does their own designs and work, it looks like all the other yards around with not much interest. I get it. It’s not cheap hiring a landscape designer and a hardscaping company but if you want your home to have the best curb appeal on the block hire the professionals. I would try to save your money and hire a landscaping designer and hardscaping company when you can afford it. I wanted to redo my front yard for 4 years. I took my time to create a file of designs and looks I liked to show my designer. My style is modern with drought tolerant plants and modern elements in the design.

4:12 If you are in Ca. they are paying the homeowner from 3 dollars to 5 dollars a sq ft. to remove the lawn, so if you are lucky it will pay for this transformation. The houses in So Cal from the 50 and 60's had a Japanese influence, what you design is kinda of like that, they used a lot of juniper bushes.

Very nice. However, I don't think the house is bland. It's has beautiful brick and stonework and nice double entry door, a nice mid-century vibe. It's hardly cookie-cutter. I like your choice of a mailbox design. It fits well. I wish I could do something like that, but it would be destroyed by the snow plows in one season :(.
