Is Xi Jinping the world's most powerful man? The world's balance of power is shifting. For the past five years president Xi Jinping, China's leader, has ruled with an iron fist and has been pursing a new model of great power relations.
Click here to subscribe to The Economist on RU-vid: econ.trib.al/rW...
Xi Jinping rules the most populous country, home to 1.4 billion people. Mr Xi is the most powerful Chinese leader since chairman Mao. He has purged the communist party and much of the army, rooting out corruption, replacing potential rivals with allies, and chocking any sign of dissent.
China is the world's second largest economy and an engine of global growth. It is the biggest trade partner of many other countries and the second biggest of both America and the EU.
China is building powerful armed forces constructing artificial islands in the South China Sea that look like military bases. Its ships have conducted military drills in the Mediterranean and Baltic Seas, and china has opened its first overseas naval base in Djibouti.
America still has the bigger economy and more military muscle but president Donald Trump is struggling at home and he scorns the values and alliances that strengthen America abroad.
As a result, Mr Xi can project himself as the champion of world order, taking the lead on globalisation and climate change. But Mr Xi also faces problems. Economic growth is slowing and inequality is rising. China's middle class wants better housing, education and health care, and more freedom.
For now Mr Xi may now have more clout than Mr Trump but his power relies on repression and this kind of power is fragile. one man-rule may be dangerous and unstable.

I think China's government is constantly changing. It is not communist, nor is it a dictatorship(it's closer to a hybrid between meritocracy/technocracy and authoritarianism), with hints of socialism. It is relatively stable, but also very flexible, perhaps drawing its roots from Confucianism(for social hierarchy and stability) and Taoism(for adapting to the changes of the outside world). It is not bogged down by lobbyist groups of corporate interests. It is extremely efficient, and almost always achieve its goals much like completing a checklist(sometimes surpassing the goals by a large margin), but is done at the expense of some human rights. But when given the choice of having freedom or being well-fed, many would probably choose the latter because what good is freedom when people lack SECURITY in their life. They need the security that comes with not needing to worry about their next meal and having a house to live in. The people are not interested in politics, as long as their government delivers the results, they will be satisfied. Because elections today look more and more like a popularity contest, with candidates often making empty promises to appeal to the people's emotions(which creates bias in their decision making), and the corruption that leads to a rigged election, I would say China is not ready for elections, but also, it should not adopt it because it would not be a right fit for their politics-avoidant society. What people don't know is how women's rights has improved drastically, with Chinese women wielding more power than other Asian women(yes, including South Korea and Japan). However, while domestic abuse against women has gone down in China, domestic abuse towards men has gone up, which is a very strange situation that needs to be resolved. It is troubling how there is no mention of this at all documenting the rapid progress in women's rights that grew almost as fast as the economy. Perhaps the media has become money-obsessed, choosing to focus solely on China's economic progress, but failing to mention the hidden progress in human rights. Nowadays, you would only hear people shout "China's economy is going to collapse!" or "China's political system will collapse!" and "China has the worst human rights record!" without digging deeper into what is actually happening, choosing instead to blindly follow all the negatives about China that the media focuses on. Because, generally, human rights develop alongside the economy and vice versa. Remember the smog in London in 1962 caused by industrialization? The Gilded Age(the late 19th century to the early 20th century) in the USA, where corporations neglect worker's rights? Right now, China is caught in between these two time periods, and in a few more years, human rights will also start pouring in if their economy was to achieve a sustainable growth(which is what many nations wanted because they believe that China will eventually become a democracy when their economy becomes developed). However, it does not mean that China will have a democracy, but this does not mean that you can't have human rights under a government that is not a democracy. Sure, you won't have a vote, but I think everything else is much more important, given the fact that less than half of eligible voters actually voted in elections in the U.S. here. Because the Chinese government knows that if it doesn't start giving out human rights soon, it may not be able to stop a rebellion of over a billion people. The government is truly at the mercy of its people, and if it wants to continue to rule over the people and hold the Mandate of Heaven, it must show COMPETENCE. It does not matter if they're corrupt, as long as their actions produce positive results for the people, they will be accepted by the people, which is how it always has been for the past 2,000 years.

The western economists always try to understand the giant eastern country, China, with a lot of effort from the view of some kind of the theory which learnt from the former western economists who very little or never contacted the oriental philosophy or even looked down on anyone except the westerners. The arrogant and self-important has already maken them go blind.

From Chinese perspective, the centralized power is rather stable and not dangerous due to its unique nature. Chinese histiry has proved a truth thousands of times that a decentralized government would separate this country to many and it is a bad thing for both people and the nation because in these decentralized kind periods 70% Chinese was killed (Jin dynasty). That's why in recent 1200 years all Chinese government(no exception) is centralized.

Only one thing our government focus on that is how to make people in China have better life. Indeed, we are no.2 economic entity in the world, but China still is a DEVELOPING country. We still have two hundred million poor people in our country. We still need developed countries' attention and care. We will not become threaten, I don't know why someone think that we will fight them while we are most powerful.

the very weaknesses mentioned in this video are the weaknesses of the U.S, thanks for pointing them out for us as we know how strong the Chinese political system and their economical system which should be a rule model for all of world countries but pointing the U.S weaknesses is a very difficult task but this video provides little help in that regard. By opening this video I though I would seeing an unbiased summery about the Chinese President to know him better but it appears that this channel is not the place to look for such information.

CCP dictatorship is destroying China from within. CCP is quadrupling China nuclear arsenal and telling domestic audiences in political trance, warmongering and fearmongering, that CCP and PLA will launch a first strike against Japan and NATO. They hate all "laowai" and they wanna "revenge the Century of Humiliation" as they call it. Xi is much more dangerous, unpredictable and lunatic than Putin. Putin Kim Xi: horsemen of the apocalypse. They must be stopped ASAP! They are in a completely different narrative and worldview, a pre-medieval mentality and archaic mindset. How can the global community peacefully put an end, but not so abruptly (soft-landing is better), to CCP destructive and clueless dictatorship? Regime change? Democracy, human rights, universal suffrage? What's next? Cut all fake diplomatic ties of CCP? They are always backstabbing and playing only by their own rules and limits. They are not flexible, they are not open-minded for debate. Why still expect this "elixir - snakeoil of diplomacy? With NoKo and PRC, diplomacy is impossible. They have a hidden bellicist warmongering agenda. How to stop CCP globally corrosive tyranny?

China is “innovating” (though not really intentionally) in politics, where they have a type of rule that is not been done before. It is not democratic, neither is it dictatorial. It is a hybrid, and one that is pragmatic. Historians will look at all the failures of western democracy, and find a comparative discussion of the uniqueness of China’s political system in contrast to it.

thats right,in fact,Both the Soviet Union and the United States have tried this kind of integration to some extent. When the Soviet Union was founded, Lenin tried to combine capitalist and socialist systems (which was later abolished by Stalin). In the 1930s, President Roosevelt also borrowed some management methods from socialist countries to alleviate the economic crisis

The stable political environment, no internal struggle too much, you can concentrate on to do some things, such as China's high iron and so on, you are still in debate, they have been built in OK,the 2, larger population size. 3, the hard work of people.4.A Greate present!

Lol economists plz study hard Chinese history and then to make such a video like this. In China one person dominance doesn’t necessarily mean bad or good. It’s all depend on the person who rules the country. It’s like Han Wu Di, he control everything over the country but he made the Han dynasty become the most powerful era at the period of history. The most scary thing is president Xi cannot find a successor as smart as like him so his successor cannot control and well managed such a great power.

I want to praise the Chinese Communist Party because, unlike the supposedly democratic countries, at least it does not lie that it is democratic, for which it deserves praise. :) This part of the world that claims to have democracy violates even freedom of speech, which is not free and unrestricted, as you know it violates Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. I am a fan of democracy, I don't like totalitarianism, but is authoritarian pseudo-democracy better? Who does not lie that he is a democrat deserves praise, and the others who claim to be democrats are exposed as liars :)

Conservatively speaking, Xi is one of the most powerful political leaders in the world. U.S. presidents, in recent history, have been the ones on the driver's seat. However, a declining economy, an over-reliance on military prowess and moral decay of recent leaders may push Xi near such a position which he does not seek !

If journalism of this quality was in a written article in The Economist, I would be shocked. It is rife with unqualified assertions ("Mr Xi is the strongest Chinese ruler since Mao", "...his power relies on repression and this kind of power is fragile") and finishes with the ludicrous characterisation of the Chinese government as "one-man rule". As unfree as it may be, it is far from one-man rule: Xi depends on his immense state and party bureaucracy far more than it depends on him.
