Xi Jinping on all fronts: how far will the China-US rivalry go? • FRANCE 24 English

Xi Jinping boasts about a great wall of steel in the speech marking the kickoff of his precedent-breaking third term as China’s president. Xi - who’s consolidated his grip on power and flexing his might just as leaders of the US, Australia and the UK converged on San Diego where they vowed to stand up to Beijing’s expansionist designs in the Pacific and elsewhere. How adversarial is Xi, what with so much trade between Aukus allies and China.

I think most people outside China misinterpreted the phrase "great wall of steel". This is a traditional phrase used to mean fence out intruder. It's a defensive phrase in stead of an offensive one. Of course, many people want it be an offensive phrase.😂

Walls create a divide. A special case is the CCP's "Grey Firewall" that not only stops "free speech cavalry", cuts Chinese people from participating in free international dialogue and mutually beneficial cultural exchange - it also creates an alternative reality inside. The CCP's internal repression apparatus that is even more expensive than its military arm, paired with indoctrination at schools and the alternative reality constructed by censorship & propaganda create an atmosphere of mistrust and detachment, monoculture of thought. This motivates the international concerns that the CCP wants to gain maximum control over 'its subjects', their thoughts and words under totalitarian control, in order to minimize internal pressures and resistance, should they decide to force them into a (civil) war of aggression.

@@freedomlife3623 That is not true, as recent as 1980s Taiwanese are still hoping to retake mainland China, we just get too comfortable and lazy. As late as 2000 Taiwan still have a government position titled "Provincial governor (省长)" It sure doesn't make much sense for a country to have 1 and only 1 province. The fact is that as the hope fads for Taiwanese government winning the civil war and retake mainland China, Taiwan adopt the strategy of saying their was no civil war and Taiwan and China are two different countries. Such strategy would hardly be condone in other Western countries ( just ask Quebec) why such action from Taiwan is supported? Two wars between China and US in last decades. The first was a direct war, the Korea war, where US planned to diminish the North Korea, bombarding up to the border area of China. China, having no air force no nuke, opened fire to US army and at the end the US's plan failed, North Korea survived. The second war was an indirect war, the Vietnam war, where the US's aim was to diminish the North government. China supported the North in various ways. It depends on what war: Information war, USA wins hands down because of English as international language, long cultural penetration in everywhere, the political, and financial hegemony. Conventional war: China as it has all the logistic advantage, USA would be humiliated and lost the stand in the long term, much worse than Vietnam war experience. Trade war: China, as China is biggest trade of the world. USA has been too far behind. China has too much advantages in hand that it doesn't want to use yet. Technology war: USA, but it would not be much favourable as the world doesn't need everything highest tech. China can work out strategy without the need to have all the most advanced tech. The development is somehow slower, but not loss. Nuclear war: the entire world lost, no one wins.

The reign of the US is in its twilight.....could be 2 years could be 30 years but it will happen. Only question is if there will there be a military conflict like every other time a new world order emerged or will it happen peacefully. Our corporations, Wall street and politicians bled us dry and sold us out. Time to pay the piper. Rough times ahead for us😢

How far will yhe US-China rivalry go? This question reflects the difference between western and we Chinese philosophy. We are peace loving people. We emphasize on harmony and coexistence. Even when we Chinese were the super power in Asia, we had not invaded any other smaller countries. No Japan (they invaded us). No Korea. No others. We had never bully the weak. We grow strong now through our own blood, sweat and tears. Rivalry? That's what the Americans look upon us. We are only their self made enemy. How are will the rivalry go? Ask the US, not us!

Despite all the conversation in this video, The fact remains that China wants to employ force as a foreign policy tool because it's by far the biggest bully in the region. Of course, there's a problem with China getting its way because there is someone else in the area which is far bigger and more powerful than China and of course that's the US. I seriously doubt any other country in the region are truly allies with China. Some countries have relationships of convenience with China but probably even those would not support Chinese military aggression if a shooting war breaks out somewhere. Some countries like Australia don't even bother with some veneer of accepting a Chinese presence in the area and when a country commits fully to the World Oder based on International law, the US is willing to extend extra benefits. Australia is not the only country to be mending and upgrading relations with the US, the Philippines has switched from independent and alone to inviting the US to increase the capability of US air and sea bases in that country.

If you really understand the history of Asia, you will conclude that China is a friendly and peaceful country! Europe and America are the real bullies! You know that China is a regional power, but it has been tolerant and has not resorted to force to solve the problem! All these territorial problems are caused by Europe and the United States. Do you know this history! Go study, my friend! The Sino-Indian territorial issue was caused by the British assigning Chinese territory to India, and the Sino-Japanese territorial issue was caused by the Americans assigning Chinese territory to Japan. So who is the bully, and who keeps putting up with it? Don't open your mouth if you don't understand the nature of things!

In recent times, the Philippines has undergone a shift in its foreign policy stance, opting to distance itself from the United States while seeking closer relations with China. This shift was driven by the hope that China would address its encroachment and aggressive behavior towards the Philippines, including the harassment of Filipino fishermen and the use of military-grade lasers to target Filipino coast guards, resulting in temporary blindness. Despite concerted efforts to foster friendly relations, China's persistent aggression and disrespectful conduct have continued, including instances of aggression occurring shortly after a visit by the Philippine President to China. While China may espouse principles of peace, stability, and friendship in its rhetoric, its actions have consistently contradicted its words, characterized by a pattern of deception, hypocrisy, and inconsistency. As a result, the Philippines has come to the realization that maintaining strong ties with a trusted, long-standing friend nation is a wiser course of action than attempting to placate a deceitful neighbor. Furthermore, EDCA sites are not intended for offensive actions, unless China initiates the activation of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the Philippines and the US.

Key events have changed the dynamic between "number 2 and number 3" a lot. If the CCP like the USSR isn't reformable, that's a historic challenge for pretty much everybody on the planet, not only for neighbours. Perhaps a bit less of a challenge for North Korea; but certainly for Russia, especially in a longer-term perspective - of course Russia does not have less pride than the CCP, however its political options for the post-Putin era are more uncertain, more flexible as well, historical options more open. Xi appears to have been pushed into, landed or gone into a strategic position, where not all, but many of his potential moves can only fail or depend on Putin. The public does not know what information the two men shared and share, but it is Putin who has the escalation lever and took the initiative with his internationally condemned 2022 surprise-attack on Ukraine; it wasn't Xi with a surprise-attack elsewhere. Some entities are fine with "helping" China to believe that it could soon become world hegemon, perhaps calculating that opportunities, more relative power and influence will go to them, once the CCP alternative reality evaporates due to hubris, once propaganda clashes with facts. Miscalculation risk also increases with internal pressure on the CCP, which in a sort of foundational tradition or proof of insecure personality, even in the 21st century continues to disappear, imprison, muzzle those who question the "supreme leader". Some political systems and policy frameworks are relics of the past that will not stand the test of time. History has plenty of them. How to improve transitions, while also avoiding conflict and unnecessary tensions?

Or is China building their military so they can defend themselves in case they are attacked? Your government recognizes Taiwan is part of their national territory. So if the US tries to declare Taiwan is independent the way Russia declared Crimea independent will France send China weapons to help China repel U.S. belligerence?
