One of the oldest styles of cards in the world, the Primiera Bolognese deck. A shortened 40 card deck version of Bologna's Tarot deck, this deck holds equal parts of historical beauty and archaic confusion. Let's take a look at this very unique pack of playing cards.

I’m going to be very sad when this series ends. Although I have been waiting anxiously for your video on the Sicilian deck. It’s also my favorite that I have mostly used for years.

There’s a Sicilian deck? Dang I thought I was done! 😂 Thanks for joining me on this unique journey. I’ll continue to deliver fun games, but this series has been special.

@@acpollazzo I don't mean to quibble, but I've absolutely eaten Spaghetti Bolognese in London, and Amsterdam, and Hamburg, and Paris and on and on. Outside of Italy they don't follow the same food rules. Not saying I endorse it, ma è così!

I've got the 'bologna' deck from french card maker 'Grimaud' and I must say it's a lot prettier and easier to read. especially the swords! I've been teaching some friends some of the games you are sharing with us and we're having lots of fun! thanks a lot ^.^

Nevermind! after watching a few of the other decks from your videos it seems as if 'Grimaud' has taken a lot of liberties and made it look more like the 'sarde' deck from your other video ... or maybe the spanish deck. they used the eagle design with a blank circle for the ace of coins as well from which deck? Seems like a mix and match of stuff and they decided to call it 'tipo' bologna.

Interesting so maybe it’s not “official” but if it’s fun to play with who cares! Grimaud has been around for a long time, they make some amazing cards. Thanks for watching!

Just came back from Bologna with the only bolognese deck I could find (they are not readily available in tabbachhi there - mostly piacentine and Napoletane). Bought the Modiano bolognese deck in the bookshop next to Eataly and it looks nothing like this deck. I think it’s a special novelty deck. The iconography looks medieval but instead of coins, there’s pizzas, instead of cups there’s wine glasses, instead of swords there’s meat cleavers etc. clearly reflecting the regions famous food culture.

There's an Eataly in Bologna 🤯. I can't complain about a pizza suit, sound like a very fun novelty deck. Thanks for the info!

For aesthetic reasons, wouldn't it be better for someone to strip a bolognese tarot deck, if they wanted to have full court cards that weren't mirrored?
@AarreLisakki

you can't despite of the claim in this video; tarocco bolognese is not sold as a full 78 card pattern -- but it is sold as a shortened 62 card deck, as that's what used for the game of ottocento etc, and so it is lacking the 4 lower numbers 2-5, in other words - it has the ace and numbers 6-10. And these lower numbers are part of the 40 card standard patterns, they go ace and then 2-7. And its been like that for centuries; Dummett states the full deck likely died out by the end of the 16. century. --- Anyhow, the other reason you can't is because the tarocco deck is also mirrored as well - even the tarocchi! In fact, along side the trappola decks, the bolognese was one of the first (italian?) decks to get mirrored. The differences between the two decks, in the elements they share, are really extremely small, like I see some figures are mustached on one but not the other, that kind of thing. Aesthetically, they're very consistent. Now I guess its still possible some historic facsimile of a single headed, 78 card tarocco bologniese is nevertheless sold somewhere, or a novelty full deck based on it -- specialty products like that come and go, of interest to both collectors and cartomancers so its hard to be definitive about what exist for such markets -- but as far as the standard pattern goes, that isn't the case. And it shouldn't even be too interesting to cartomancers as the divination system was developed for the already shortened deck in bolognia, not the other way around.

@@AarreLisakki Thanks, although I did buy a tarocco bolognese, only to discover just what you noted, especially the missing numbers. As far as I was concerned, the mirroring made it useless as a Tarot deck as well. So... another deck in my collection probably won't use. Oh well!

beautiful! I bet you get used to the busy-ness of a deck after playing a few hands with it and learn to quickly distinguish the ones that seem indistinguishable from each other at first sight ... much like a plate of bolognese - I'd know my mother's at a glance!

Well said, the more I’ve used this one, the more quickly I can identify the cards. The barrier for entry with them takes a little patience but they are very pleasing to play with once they feel familiar. Thanks for watching!
