Hi can I check, If it dont support video output means USB c doesnt carry video and audio out? It cant work with USB c to hdmi adapters? Haha little bit of a deal breaker if cant wired connect to a monitor or TV :) thanks
Yep, bought it just for that as I saw that all the English speakers in China didn't review the 12 two weeks ago. I was really interested in this more compact one.
This is why YOU'RE the best tech reviewer on YT! Thank you so much for finally giving Xiaomi an earful. Every time I tried telling people that their software is unacceptable, I would get attacked. Hopefully, this will be a wake up call for them. Xiaomi STOP releasing a million models per month, invest more and focus on revamping your software and maybe I'll buy your phones in the future (I do use your other products though).
I Know I get the same earful they just later label me as a hater, fact is I'm a fan. Been reviewing their phones and tech since the Mi 2S! I Know Xiaomi can do better and this current direction is not it. The innovation in this model jsut isn't their it's plagued with issues and feels rushed. The solution isn't 20 Xiaomi 12 models these being the first. They need less models more focus. And especially to focus on MIUI13.
A long time user of Xiaomi phones here (since Redmi Note 3) and right now I daily drive a Mi 10 Lite on 12.5 MIUI. I like Xiaomi's hardware and their low prices but while MIUI is feature rich, under my experience is also filled with: -small, most of the time, bugs, especially annoying when interfere with essential tasks (like calls) -micro-stutters all over -random lags Finally memory handling vs multitasking experience is really poor and lock screen notifications are a let down I really hope Xiaomi focus fixing the experience with MIUI because probably I will not be the only one searching a way out.
Well said!! We need to call out companies more often and as loud as possible for what I think is a terrible practice which is releasing way too many unnecessary phones in many cases with downgrades compared to the previous models. 👏🏾👍🏾👏🏾
@@rdmz135 What do you mean, it's true though? Qualcomm modems are much more reliable compared to whatever Mediatek is using. Even iPhones use Qualcomm modems now. Also it's historically been harder to unbrick mediatek phones than it is for Snapdragon phones.
Chris, love your review and the fact that you always show the negatives! MiUI has become more and more of a headache. It's not a good experience when you're buying a top-end smartphone.
@@Techtablets if it would be even smaller, and would not cheap out on camera tech, would get 12 ultra trio, or at least 12 procamera, it would be my favorite phone. those basels i really dont like on the 11 ultra either, but yeah probably for dded protection, you mentioned, but then, if they really want to focus on that a why a curved phone, it looks dumb and less usably excidental touches.. dont really like it.
With the state of current 8 gen 1 phones, this would be a great opportunity for mediatek to swoop in with the Dimensity 9000. Though after going from an 865 to 865+ and eventually 870, I haven't really found the practical need for anything higher aside from the insane battery life from an A15 except I avoid Iphones.
Great review! BTW, the scrolling lag is a general Android 12 bug. Even Pixel lags while using apps. In my case it lags while I scroll through Telegram.
Was gonna buy the 12 Pro when it launches in Europe, to upgrade from my Mi 10T Pro. By the looks of it I will skip it or just get the Mi 11 Ultra which will be plenty for 2+ years. The heat management issue is very big deal, more than most people think. Meaning Xiaomi's engineering department haven't done their hardware/software testing properly before launching the device. They can fix the issue in software but will probably have to lower clocks a fair amount. Then again, why gimp a beastly SoC in the first place? Great review Chris as always, you have been my go to channel for Xiaomi tech.
Dear Chris, as always perfect video, very objective, and professional...as always, on the other side... Regarding Snap 8 gen 1 (and before: Snap 888) do we really need so much power in the mobiles? And the cons are now overheating and battery consumption. I would remain with SNAP 865, which is power more than the enough. On the other side, better to build a very well tested smartphone, improved cameras but, very important, cheaper. Not possible to spend 800-900 bucks in a smartphone in 2022. Not anymore. My personal thinking of course.
We don't, I would rather see improved ISPs, more efficient chips more coverage on the modems. USB 3.1 and 4k on the front cameras. But no, they play the benchmark scores game it always has to be XXX,000 points higher in Geekbench or Antutu, but what's the point if it overheats with sustained high loads? Pointless they are shooting themselves in the foot.
@@Techtablets coudn't agree more... let's wait and see if/when any android brand will dare to designa and offer a new true "flagship" as far as display, camera, software and battery life concern in all of this playing the only winner is Apple which is offering solid and consistent phones year after year. they're very expensive but at least you can appreciate the care they put in what matters most and they're constantly gaining market share in high priced range phones. it's a real pity...
Great review Chris. It's a shame none of these companies seem able to deliver knock out products any more. So many compromises and prices so high. Still can't see anything to get rid of my Oneplus 8 Pro for, will see what the Exynos 2200 is like in the S22 range.
Overheating issue is quite concerning for flagship device of given price. Chris was exactly on point saying about proper cooling system which normally was presented on this kind of smartphones 3 - 4 years ago - copper pipes, vapour chambers. This phone as well as vast majority of others is missing it and I can't get my head around why. The last flagship smartphone where I saw copper heat dissipator was LG V60 ThinQ. Looks like common sense is left behind...
Thank you for calling out the stutters within applications! It doesn't seem to be particularly related to Xiaomi, as I've been seeing reports of Twitter and other apps stuttering with scrolling on the Pixel 6 series too. I'm currently daily driving a Poco X3 Pro and I'm also seeing a ton of stutter across many apps, with Twitter stuttering during scrolling across all ROMs.
It seems so far to be the worst in Google Play, then Twitter and RU-vid also have a bit. It's not because the apps are running at 60 hz, it's the actually fluidity of the scroll it judders at times. My other Android phones seem to scroll better. Maybe an Android 12 issue?
Awesome review as always! Could we get a review for One+ 9R as well? SD870 and most importantly support for band 20 4g which isn't the case with most Xiaomi phones
Excellent review again. I do hope they improve those few things. I have a Poco F2 Pro for 15 months which I love, but worried about Google Play Services only up to 1 August. I also have a Mi 10 Lite 5G which fares better for updates atm. Too many new models, and early support withdrawal on 2 year olds or less. I know Xiaomi models now give 4/3 yr support. I'm more tempted by the 11T right now, with the Dimensity 1200. At the end of the day it's their promotions that win me - and they are becoming fewer here in UK. MI 11 which I like, is too expensive, and the Mi 11 Ultra has not been available for months. Great channel ,again!
The jerkiness of both front and rear camera videos was the deciding factor for me, and got the 12X instead, based on your video for that other one. I really wanted this 12 model, with its "better" processor (as long as it doesn't overheats, but I don't play games, so that was not a huge consideration for me), "long term" software support (at least by Android in general -and Xiaomi in particular- standars), better DPS and ISP, but... what is the point of all that if you cannot really use it? If the end result is what we see here, there's really no point in spending about $120 more on it. The fact that the 12X has the exact same cameras as the 12 was another huge factor for my decision. Thank you very much, Chris, for this review, your honesty and transparency are highly appreciated!
I just ordered one of these made for the US market and I like it and mine came with a 120 watt fast charger so far it is working better than my old Moto Edge+ that started not letting me unlock it at all. I am happy with this that cost me $461 dollars.
Looks like they threw these models out the door right before Chinese New Year. Another reviewer from mainland China was using a unit that had just been updated and was amazed at the difference in camera performance so maybe it will improve. Just looks like more so so products from Xiaomi. I guess it's great that they're always producing something new, but it seems like nothing has ever fully supported or completely polished before it hits the market. I really wonder which companies will come out with the biggest game changers this year. Nice review 👍
Honesty is always key in your reviews Chris. 👍👍 Truely transparent and worth watching. Thank you for this full review of the 12 variant. I was waiting for this one.
hi Chris! the issue that you noticed with scrolling has been a thing that started with android 12 builds from Xiaomi it's fixed right now on the chinese weekly beta builds, the workaround in the past was to disable the dynamic fonts check if you have a toggle for that in the settings, if not, it ought to be in the dev options
Thanks for the great review, i have a Mi 10T pro, sadly the 11 series wasn't interesting to upgrade and now the 12 isn't that great too ? Disappointing, i'd love to upgrade but it seems i will have to wait it out another 6/12 months..
Great review. I would like to see when s22 arives if the "wobbling issue" with greens/browns in bright light still there. I"m stuck with s7 because every new model showed the same issue over and over.
Great phone review and overview of what Xiaomi are doing in the market. It's dumbfounding how companies can make things so complicated while simultaneously reducing quality -- and I'm generally a Xiaomi fan!
can you please make a review of the Xiaomi 12X? I really like the design of the Xiaomi 12, but this snapdragon 8 gen 1 seems worse than the 888 of last year, what is the point of so much powerful chipset if it cannot sustain the performance? I have Mi 11 Ultra, I have the 888 and my biggest gripe with the device is the chipset, horrible thermals like an oven, I have the xiaomi pad 5 pro 5g aswell and it has the 870, and I know it's a tablet with better passive cooling, but that thing is freezing ice to the touch, never overheats, and I have put it in extreme stress tests, the 870 is just super optimized, that's why the most interesting release for me is the 12x out of the three 12 pro, 12 and 12x, because of the chipset, I am thinking of sidegrading my mi 11 ultra because of this annyoing issue, again sorry for long rant but qualcomm made really bad flagship chipsets, the 8 gen 1 and 888 thermal issues are horrible, 888 is managable, but what's the point for that "extra performance" when the real champ is the 870 since it can easily sustain extreme tests, in short I am very dissapointed in the chipsets, this year I will probably sidegrade to 870, I am sick of this "flagship" 888 and "super flagship 4nm 8 gen 1" a chipset that after 10 minutes is overheating lol
Hey Chris, great review as usual. Hopefully you can get your hands on the iQoo 9 Pro. Seems like its the only Snapdragon 8G1 phone that does not heat up
First of all, LIKE !! Then, super correct, Chris !! A combination of the two reasons you mentioned led to these results !! There are two other possibilities, such as something wrong in the production process, to interrupt the correct heat transfer and .. last hope, completely unoptimized software !! "Hope" because these errors can be fixed by software update. Otherwise ... goodbye SND 8 gen 1 or goodbye Xiaomi 12 !!! And I think it's unfair that this is happening because these phones have shown huge potential. Another interesting thing is that for the global version, test results appeared, recently, it's as they (Xiaomi) testing a new phone model, not one that's already sold in China ?!?!? Strange, but we might be surprised that the global version is completely different from the Chinese version! After all, that's their job to make better phones and correct what they did wrong.... So, thanks for this review and I look forward to the next one !!!!
Well they have some time to fix all the issues for the global release. Not sure when it's coming but I hope they push it out a few months to deliver a polished final Xiaomi 12 Global series in much better shape than the two Chinese models I have!
awesome review as always, are you going to review the pixel 6 pro, wanted to buy it but wasnt sure if i should with all the problems people have been complaining about. is it a good buy?
true, small form factor and SD 8 Gen 1 built like to perform like a microwave I don't have hope that it will improve.Updates will only try to lower clock speed to heat less at the cost of performance
Hello , i have been a xiaomi user for years now.. xiaomi was amazing , very happy with it, xiaomi 10 good but had serious issues with normal phone calls, most of the times does not connect tried everything didn't get fixed . can only call through whatsapp. now i am thinking about getting xiaomi 12 but very worried if something similar with the phone calls problems with xiaomi 10 might arise.. would really appreciate your opinion about it.
When you put the case on the phone, the funny shape corners hook into the case corners and the case edge follows the line if the screen. The corners appear to disappear. that allows the case to fit and not interfere with the curved edges. Agree with the knock on usb2
Really disappointed with Qualcomm and their Snapdragons SOCs. 888 had heat problems and now this! My next phone will definitely have Mediateks 9000 SOC far more power efficient and providing similar overall performance.
@@Techtablets check out YT Geekerwan extensive review of MediaTek 9000 looks very promising. TSMC silicon fabrication is superior to Samsung which Qualcomm is using.
@@Techtablets Because the name of Mediatek is not as selling as that of Qualcomm, all the major manufacturers have opted for the 8 Gen 1 in their high-end and this can be understood at marketing level . On the other hand, I have a fear for this Dimensity 9000, that of not ending up with their mid-range more efficient than their high-end most of the major manufacturers restrict the actual capabilities of this processor 🤔. Let's be frank, who is going to agree to pay $300 to $400 more for a less powerful and autonomous smartphone?
Thank you for the review. Do front facing camera video looks choppy and laggy for me. Was it like that or that was conversion issue? Thanks once again for the review. Are you planning to review the Realme GT 2? I haven't heard of overheating issues with that phone, but who knows?
Yes the conversion by Premiere Pro for some reason only affected the front footage. GT 2, Yes if Realme sends it to me. Lately they haven't been sending me phones for some reason.
@@Techtablets Thank you very much for your answer and keep up the great work. Let's hope Realme send it to you. They shouldn't be scared if they made a good phone, but if it's overheating like the Xiaomi, that would explain why they are not sending it. And it's weird why they're not sending you phones when you said so much good things about Realme GT and both Master and Master Explorer edition. Yeah, GT has some overheating issues and problems with the brightness if I am not mistaken, but it's still an awesome phone.
I'm 90% blaming Qualcomm on this one, smartphone flagship chips should strive for better performance under the same or lower thermals and power consumption as the previous gen. There's only so much a smartphone maker can do regarding cooling without resorting to active cooling
Chris , you don’t need to put HONEST in title, we all know you are honest , and you pay for your devices, and sell them to recover the cost ,,, We know independent reviewer like you are gem of tech review industry.
Yeah I did it anyway as I see there are some Xiaomi 12 and 12 Pro videos that fail to mention any of the shortcomings only wanting to sell it via their affiliate links for $$$
Can't wait for yhe Global release of this one. Been sticking around with Mi 9 SE as there is nothing like it for all those Xiaomi releases, until now. They should be relatively similar in size and feel. 5.99" vs 6.2" 😁
Years ago I spoke about eventually needing to incorporate a fan in smartphones due to more powerful processors, like what happened to PC's. People disagreed and said it wouldn't be necessary. Now look what's occurred...
Yes, scrolling experience terrible on my Redmi K40 too. It's happened when i updated to Miui 13 A12. In previous version Miui 12.5, it's running very smoothly. I think it's all about Miui 13 or Android 12.
The phone does overheat in daily use? Or when is charged at 67 watts? I'm not interested in gaming, I use lite games as candy crush or backgammon. Thank you
Most cons these days are just software bugs that can be solved by just flashing a custom ROM. However, there is one major con that prevents me from buying the latest flagships, and that is heating and poor sustained performance.
Today I tried my Asus zenfone 8 on 3D-mark and it didn't finish the stress test it got to 19/20 and gave an error. It's a super phone seriously been using it casually and everything is perfect.
hey chris quick question to your video both on comparison 12 and pro have overheating issues, can it effect the daily usage like social more on youtube, instagram and web brwosing im not into gaming, can it effect a average user on that overheating issue? thanks
It appears that Snapdragon has reached its limit with passive cooling, why would they even put out a chip that you cannot utilize ? such a let down. I've been waiting for the 8 Gen 1 for so long now, but I dont think I will buy one. Thanks for the great review.
Chris, I really like the honest and detailed review you have always being giving us. I'm using Poco x3 NFC and I want to upgrade to either the standard mi 11 or the exynos version of note 20 ultra. Both are of the same price. Which one should I go for? I need your advise
It feels like this phone was rushed to be released. Scrolling lags, low fps in video recording and overheating issues have been mentioned by almost every videos I watched. I agree with what you said with too many models coming out.
I have mi8 with the same 96kbps joke of an audio bitrate while recording video. What's interesting, sound recorder app has "HD" option which gives good quality sound file. It's like they just don't care about the camera.
I upgraded my mi10 ultra to MIUI13 and experienced the same GMS app stuttering issue gmail being the worst. Just got another update yesterday and the issue seems much improved. but still not perfect .
i m probaly weird but the one xiaomi phone i m excited for, is the "12 lite". Hopefully it will come with Snapdragon 790 or 7gen1 ( not sure how qualcomm will name it).
What's up with all the stuttering, especially from the front-facing camera? Or is it just the youtube video that has these stutters? Kinda confused why you didn't mention it, though it looks super choppy.
Sorry that is some issue with the video editor only on the front facing video, I can't explain it other than a difference in codec or something as the rear footage is fine. It should be 30 fps, but seems to be like 15 fps.
it's the same problem with most non stock android out there. the scrolling stutter. noticed it a while ago. a lot of these 120hz refresh rate phones can't compete with some of the old 60hz pixel phones. the scrolling experience on a pixel is just better and of course the 90hz and 120hz pixels are better than the rest. even my iphone using friends notice this. one of the reason i can no longer use non stock android phones
After seeing how nice it is to hold my friends iPhone 12 pro (Non max) i really just want to buy this just for that small form factor, coming from a mi 11.
Thank you so much, planning to switch from my 1+ 9pro to mi 12 pro, but this over heating sh!t is unacceptable. Snap 8 gen 1 will the the end of flagship in 2022
Chris what do you think of the 12x? I'm not a gamer just looking for a solid compact phone with good battery life and don't use wireless charging either?
@@Techtablets Thanks for the response Chris, I really appreciate that. I actually ordered the Realme GT explorer, but I find it quite big so think I'll fare out better with the Xiaomi 12x. Added bonus the Xiaomi has widevine L1!
