Love your channel. It's been 3 years. Any news on an update to the GSOC? I only ask because the new G 90 update made the GSOC useless. Thank you for the time you put into your channel.

Hey, Mike. I want to ask you about the Miady LiFePo behind you. I have some of those too, all paralleled to give me more current draw capability from a battery box. I love the price but not sure what the real limitations are until using them more. What have you noticed and how has it worked for you? Thanks for your videos.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 3 года назад
Well, in short, you get what you pay for. They def have current limitations. I can't even pull 100 watts out of it from my 7300. Thats pretty bad. I do want to get another one to build a battery box solely because they are so inexpensive. I don't think I would actually use them for radio though unless it was qrp, and even then, I have some great 3ah batteries from Bioenno that I would use instead.

I'm looking at your DB9 connector on the back of the GSOC and I am wondering why you don't have the hold down screws tightened all the way down? I noticed on my GSOC if I don't tighten them all the way, and swing the bail out, it puts pressure on the cable and connector when I set it on my desk. That contributed to RFI problems I was experiencing. I tightened the connector up and put a block under the bail and all but a little of the RFI I had when transmitting disappeared. Changing to a better shielded DB9 cable I had eliminated it. James
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 3 года назад
That's purely out of ignorance. I didn't think it would really matter. I'll have to try screwing them in firmly. Boy there is a lot of strain on the wires though huh?! I wish they never used that connector. It's so ancient. But they could have put it in a different spot perhaps. Or the bail or something...It's like they didn't even try it out. Are you putting the wire above the bail so the bail sits on the bench, or are you putting the wire under the bail so the bail sits on the wire? For me, either way isn't ideal. I shouldn't have to change to a better cable from a brand new bit of kit either. It should just work. Thanks for the insight though. That's the great thing about the ham radio community, we get to teach and learn from each other. Shoot me an email of any of your findings. I'm good on QRZ. I'd love to continue our discussion off air. BTW, I love your music lol!!!

The more videos I see about this, the more I'm glad I canceled my order when they started missing shipping deadlines. I will have to disagree with you about the tuning reset to 0 when clicking on another number. I would be very pissed if I was trying to really tune in on a station and the values kept resetting on their own. Especially if I was trying to get a cw or digital signal. I knew the Bluetooth and wireless USB features would cause problems. Found that out when I used a Bluetooth speaker with my G90. There just isn't the shielding needed to block those signals. I like the idea of the GSOC though. Now if it just gets fine tuned and comes down in price.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 3 года назад
You dodged a $550 bullet lol! My Icom-7300 changes the freq to zero when you go up in steps. If you want to tune in a CW station you would go down in steps and fine tune it that way. But if I'm going up in steps I want it to zero out the lower tuning. It is certainly neat concept but its gonna take some time before we see a stable version I think. And there's nothing they can do with the usb interference with firmware. Thats all hardware.
@havensphotography
@havensphotography 3 года назад
I see what you're saying now about resetting when you go back to larger adjustments. I guess I'm just used to how the G90 adjusts at this point. Resetting like that seems like a nice feature, but I wouldn't have thought of it. I was looking forward to the larger screen mostly. I can wait for that.

It looks like the scope has an AGC that shows weak signals like the wireless mouse transmitter, maybe try a wired mouse? It does not show on the S meter which reads nothing. The G90 was quite bad when it first came out, I am sure they will upgrade the firmware. The G90 AGC seems nasty, lots of distortion and noise, I think its audio agc! I wonder if the GSOC is better. AGC off makes the G90 audio quite good sounding. Maybe the cables between the radio and the gsoc allow the noise on the spectrum to show up? No one else is doing this setup, a small portable radio for the field, with a big display for in the shack. Flex has their setup but its not portable, and their maestro does not allow mouse operation! The G90 is almost there, a few things tweaked and the AGC fixed and its a winner, if they fix all the issues with the gsoc they will have a nice setup for a low price. The Elecraft KX2/KX3 costs a lot more and has limited use in the shack, and puts out less power. What else has this dual role, SOTA radio and shack radio?
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 3 года назад
All good thoughts. Who has a wired mouse anymore though? I certainly wouldn't want any more cables than are already there. The G90 has gotten better with every firmware upgrade for sure, though my only problems with it since the day I got it was no noise reduction and no notch filter. I didn't think about the cables on the GSOC allowing the noice. I should try some ferrites on it. Overall I think its a great concept but boy is it not ready yet. I do see this as a more economical option to the KX line for sure. It just needs to work.

There is still a lot of work for Xiegu to be getting on with and even the manual says it is a prototype unit. I suppose getting these units out to market will give a feed-back to them as to how the users like/dislike what it does do and will do. Am I right in saying it loosly resembes an IC-7300 with how it looks? I had considdered this with the XPA-125B but when combined with the cost of the G-90 already paid out I would have an IC-7300 with cash in the pocket. Don't get me wrong the G-90 is a marvelous wee creature but, this pre-release GSOC is a bit of an anti-climax, especially as you seem to have the latest firmware version of the GSOC and I must have 1.74 or higher on the G-90. Conclusion; I will be leaving the stock head-unit firmly fixed for now. 73 de 2M0FUP
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 3 года назад
Fortunately Xiegu is pretty responsive to what the users want so I think they can add quite a bit of functionality to it with firmware updates. There are sill some hardware issues though like when I plugged in the USB mouse, and the fact that there are fixed RF spikes regardless of where you tune to. Not sure how they're gonna address those things. I suppose it resembles the 7300, but most radios with a waterfall kinda look similar. Even the Flex radios. It would def be cheaper to just get a 7300 for sure. I have V1.75 on the G90. They did just release a new update for the GSOC a couple days ago that I have updated. It added these fixes: It's a start, but still a long way to go. Xiegu GSOC FW V1.1 1. Solved the CW sidetone delay problem 2. Solved the problem of unstable system and occasional crash 3. Added RTTY modem 4. Added CW decoder 5. Added SWR scanner 6. Added FFT/Waterfall level adjustment 7. Added FFT line/fill color mixer
@georgehaha6969
@georgehaha6969 3 года назад
@@hamradiotube Fully agree, also as this is still at prototype they will be activly working to get it right. I feel the fixed RF spikes are related to the I/Q lead. Had exactly the same issue with HDSDR but a couple of ferrite beads (1 each end) sorted that for the best part. Perhaps they will be able to engineer out the need for the I/Q feed, after all it is not needed for the same result on the regular head unit. It is good to see new featured added with the fixes and updates and does show the development commitment. The 7300 resemblance goes further than the watefall for me but, in China it is a high compliment is to copy so I suppose that could be a good thing. I noticed after updating to 1.75 on the G-90 the radio felt more stable, difficult to explain but I'm sure you get my meaning.

The bottom line is that Xiegu are charging you the original price of the rig again to join their GSOC R&D team! The GSOC was announced far too early, so that it was late in arrival and did not work properly. Nearly a year and a half on from launch and this video, little has changed. There have been some updates but your main and very valid points remain unfixed. Xiegu have really negated all the brand loyalty they built up with the G90 by treating their customers so poorly over the GSOC. It is such a shame because the G90 is a good rig and could become a classic of it's type but unless the GSOC price and performance are addressed, Xiegu will develop a bad reputation.
@thomasstandley6309
@thomasstandley6309 3 года назад
Sometimes you are so nice that I start to think you used to live on the other side of the Detroit River. The bottom line is that this thing should NEVER have been released as it is currently configured particularly at an extremely high price for what amounts to a tablet surrounded by a case with some ports and flawed programming. I still deeply suspect they rushed this thing out before it was fully baked to compete with the ICOM 705 (which may partially explain the pricing). I really hope they can rewrite the firmware/software and fix a lot of this but by doing what they did they basically damaged their brand. I own the G-90 which I like a lot so I'm fairly disappointed they did this. You have to believe the GSOC could end up being integrated into future Xiegu radios which makes this even more disappointing. A lot of people are now going to think long and hard before plunking money down for this thing regardless of how they fix it.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 3 года назад
Oh my god that got me lol!! I don't know what the deal is with releasing it with such a crappy version, and speculating why is a waste of time, but I am positive they will have a lot of software updates that will improve this. I have already seen some videos with newer firmware that expands its capabilities. I just watched one last night that had cw decode. I suppose I'm not as burned as others because I have a loaner unit and am not out $550. We've also seen, what I think, are some nice improvements to both the G90 and X5105. I've only had those radios for about a year and there have been 3 updates to the g90 so far. That's a pretty good track record if you ask me. I can't say that for any of the big 3 manufacturers. Of course, I don't think there is as much of a need from them either. Hopefully they prove all the naysayers wrong, and hopefully I can keep this long enough to follow up with the software updates.

@@hamradiotube I was able to watch the video, but my eyes kept getting drawn to it. It took me a couple of minutes to realize that it was actually a reflection, not something with the display :D

Still quite amazed that Xiegu think it's ok to send out products with non-functioning firmware! They're still sending out G90's with a very poor beta firmware installed when there's s much better version available. I appreciate that you're being tactful here but let's be honest; This thing is a complete rip-off as it currently stands and those who have paid good money should be returning it immediately for a full refund. Let Xiegu learn from their mistakes rather than have people excusing them because they're "having a go"...

It's a tough pill to swallow for sure. If everything worked it wouldn't be so bad but the price is still way high. They did just release a new firmware that does add some features but there's still a long way to go.

I think what we're seeing here is a company that has gotten into radio manufacturing that are not in the 'radio' business... these companies are general 'electronics' companies. They're not radio users, their appliance designers that are marketing things that are half baked... sorry... not a fan...

Yeah I'm not sure what to think. I love the G90 and X5105. They work great. These other products seem to leave a little to be desired. Not much testing before they are released.

Me too lol! I have to send it back at some point but they didn't tell me how long I get to keep it. Hopefully until they get some updates out.

@@hamradiotube I think since they provided it to you to evaluate in this shape, you should be allowed you to keep it for long-term testing until all ll the patches are released. This is the only way to give it a fair evaluation.

as usual. an overpriced Chinese junk. do yourself favor add $200 and buy JAPAN only. if one has to reveal all the glitches to them then it's not worth to cost as much as it is. I wouldn't buy it even if it was twice as low. cause it still would be a money thrown away.

If it worked as advertised and was less money I think it would be pretty cool. As it sits right now, I suspect a lot of people would be quite angry they dropped $550 on this.
