A great review and walk-through of the radio, Mike. 👍 I've had mine for over a year and still love it. The new firmware is streets ahead of the older one. Great video. I realize your video is about a year old now, but I I just bought a X5105 (partly due to your video) and it now comes loaded with Ver. 3 of the firmware and the Ver. 3 manual. Also the power plug is 5.5 mm x 2.5 mm pin which is kind of important if you want to use existing power cable for charging or for external power -- because most other such cables have the 2.1 mm inside pin size and won't fit. I had to buy a 5.5mm, 2.1mm to 5.5mm, 2.5mm adapter from Amazon. BTW, don't buy from MFJ now because they only have the very old model available (probably old returns) , with no mention if they will have the newer model (the one in your video) anytime soon.

They are both great radios. You wouldn't go wrong either way. You just have to decide what features are most important to you. The main differences to me are the X5105 has an internal battery, but only does 5 watts. The G90 does 20 watts but no battery. The G90 is $150 less though for what thats worth. The x5105 also has a way bigger screen, but no waterfall, where the G90 has a great waterfall, but it's super tiny. About an inch or so. It's the same size as you would have on a DMR radio.

China is really stepping up their game with these HF rigs for sure. They are really giving the Japanese manufactures a run for their money and filling a void in the portable hf market by having a lot of features and a really attractive price point. Hi, I would recommend to go with g90. Because buy first HF transiver with power 5W not a right way from my opinion. 20W is slightly enough to have comfortable QSO. With 5W you might be disappointed because of number QSO. Also for working with QRP you need very good antenna and tools to avoid any signal lost.

I am looking for a combination SOTA setup for backpacking as well as a SHTF emergency comms radio so I am looking for something that I can run from a solar panel without having an external battery incase the grid is down and I do not have time to recharge the external battery.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 2 года назад
Well, sort of. It already has an internal battery so you don't need an external battery at all. As far as solar, you could get a panel and charge controller for lithium batteries and that would keep the battery charged while you used it (assuming you have enough sun and a big enough solar panel to output enough current). Or just to recharge it when you aren't using it.

Nice little portable QRP radio. An internal look would be nice to see if the heat sink style of base is for finals or tuner or both and what type of tuner. In lower bands it doesn't figure a small tuner would handle tuning well and need to dummy load off to the heat sink area.

[2:50] XFC is for playing recorded messages, e.g. in CW. Sadly you can't use this function without the mike, which is very inconvenient if you are a CW operator. Hopefully Xiegu will fix this in the next firmware upgrade. XFC also may have some other functions depending of the mode. [5:40] that's not an IQ out, it's an analogue IF output. You can connect it directly to RTL-SDR, tune to 70.445 Mhz and you get a waterfall on your PC. You can find a screenshot of how it looks like here eax.me/xiegu-x5105/ [11:10] Messages also work for BPSK and RTTY. [11:50] Generally QSK means that the radio automatically switches on/off transmit mode when you are keying. However in this radio QSK=OFF means that it doesn't transmit at all, i.e. you only listen the sound of your morse code. This sometimes is useful if you are choosing a transmit speed, testing a new key, etc. [13:40] Actually you can't use SWR feature as an SWR meter. An error is very large, e.g. you can read SWR 1 when it's actually ~1.7. It will do if you need a quick check of the antenna. [15:10] I couldn't figure out how to switch to the voltage reading, thank you! [19:20] RSSI level is for calibrating the S-meter, it's the amount of uV that corresponds to the S9 level. Your value 100 is VERY wrong, it should be set to 73, ± depending on your unit and favorite band. S-meter is also not very accurate in X5105. 73 de R2AUK
@Brendan8440
@Brendan8440 4 года назад
Aleksander Alekseev It is fixed in the latest firmware. You can use the PTT button to launch the message. However you still have to be in the Digi menu screen to do it. I’d like to be able to view SWR.

Mike, I appreciate your videos so much and would value your opinion (as well as others I suppose...) on a best choice for a brand new ham looking to spend around $500'ish for a new radio. I've of course seen your reviews of the X5105 but also the G90 and am currently leaning towards the latter for it's higher output and waterfall screen, among other features. Portability is important but I get the sense the G90, although not as minimal as the 5105, is still highly portable. I will be using it for CW and SSB but am sure I will make use of the digital side as well. I have also seen the Minion SDR recently and wanted to hear thoughts on that option as well. Whatever I choose will ultimately become my main ham rig for a while so this is important to me. Thx, Mark

@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 4 года назад
Mark, that opinion is so highly subjective. I can't tell someone what radio they should get. This is probably the most common question I get and all I can tell you is go with what fits your needs. If the higher power and waterfall appeals to you, go with the g90. I prefer the x5105 because it has an internal battery, weighs less and has a notch filter and noise reduction. The g90 does not have those features. It's still a great and fun radio to operate so you can't go wrong with either radio. Everything is a compromise in one way or another and you are going to have to sacrifice some things to get others.

The manufacturer states that the battery will typically last for 3 years before it will need to be replaced. You think it might be true? what if after 4-5 yrs of having this radio I won't be able to get a battery replacement? What are your thoughts on this matter? Thnx.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 3 года назад
That would really depend on how much you use it and how many times you cycle the battery. I've taken it apart and it doesn't look hard to change out the battery. Worst case scenario if the battery dies and you can't get a replacement you can always operate from an external one. You may even be able to find a similar battery that could swap out. I honestly haven't looked though. It's just a square shaped LiPo inside. Shouldn't be that hard to find.

The g90 has a really nice waterfall display and a little more power that could help in some instances, but it is heavier and doesn't have a battery. Before having both, I didn't even care about the g90. After owning it however, I have fallen in love with it. It's a really tough decision. Maybe one day I'll do a side by side comparison, but I kinda already did that with the 2 videos. I would just decide what features are most important to you and go from there.

Flying..., The X5105 has 6 meters and the G90 does not. The G90 uses slightly LESS power on receive....I really don't understand that.. The G90 is cheaper enough to more than offset the purchase of a power bank that the X5105 doesn't need. The G90 has a nicer display but the X5105 is also nice. As a Technician Class, I was leaning towards having the 6 meters. But, I have been a Tech for too long anyway, it's time to move up to General and that gives the nod to the G90 Besides, I still have the FT897d for the missing bands. For me....I am buying the G90. @@hamradiotube Thanks....Some reviewers are claiming different values. I am assuming these power consumption values are measured by you and not otherwise published figures. It seems more likely that the G90 display would need more power than the less elaborate display of the X5150. It means that the G90 would need a bigger power supply for the same run time but I'm ok with that. The deciding factor, at the end of the day, is the 20 watts. That is not that big a deal on CW but on SSB the extra 15 watts might make the difference at a time when I have a more-than hobbyist interest in punching the signal through. How cool will it be when cheap power amps become available? Frankly, I am amazed at the idea that choices like these are even available.
@hamradiotube
@hamradiotube 4 года назад
GuiTardZan Yes, I actually set them up before I commented and tested them myself again. The g90 is a “bigger” radio so it makes sense that it draws more current. The displays really don’t matter too much when it comes to power consumption though. It changes very little when they are on vs off. Xiegu also makes a 125 watt amp for about $500 maybe $600 as well. That’s on the list of things to look into.

@@dwatson4 I was watching a revue of a G90 where the Ham was speaking to another station, he got a signal report of 59+10 and gave the other station a 53 report back. the G90 was running 10watts and the other station who he gave the 53 report to was running 1KWatt. Which only goes to show it's not just more power that wins . Years ago not long after getting my full call I made a contact with a good friend of mine on 2mtrs using less than 10milliWatts over a distance of 150 miles we where both using stacked 18 element homemade Yagi,s which we built from scrap TV Antennas and yet another friend who lived very close to me couldn't hear anything even tho he had a $300 colinear and was running 100 watts from his brand new bells and whistles transceiver. It definitely shows that with a good Antenna and the right conditions anything is possible Also an S1 signal at 20 watts would require you to increase your power to 80 Watts to get an S2 signal, and to get to S3 you would have to increase your power to 320 watts. So basically the difference between a 20watt transceiver and a 100watt one is just over 1 S point. If your antenna,s where exactly the same.

@@hamradiotube I am sure you'll both be very happy together. I have Ft817nd, Ft-7 (on ebay) and FT-7B with counter option. I would like something small, but for SSB and Data, but not cost a fortune. Considering a BITX-Version 6.1. All the HF bands for $200

X5105 does not have any protection design, the power supply only needs to be connected reversely for 0.5 seconds! Damage immediately!

I'll be sure to not connect it improperly! Thanks for letting us know.

Where do they say that? I've not heard it and there is no mention of it in the manual.

I can't find an actual spec on it anywhere. Some of my plugs work, some don't. It looks like the same size as my Bioenno chargers but it isn't. The center pin is ever so slightly fatter.

Mike, nice job. I found this updated manual for the more resent firmware and operation procedures at a X5105 Facebook page. Found it quite helpful. 73 KE0JVS facebook.com/groups/274216883466165/files/

That’s awesome that I finally deleted my Facebook account yesterday so I can’t see it! Thanks for sending the link though. I’ll have to get it from someone else.

Hey thanks! This has become my EDC radio. I absolutely love it. Equally amazed at the number of contacts I have been able to make running a measly 5 watts too. Plus the fact that I can fit everything in a tiny soft lunch box that only weighs a few pounds is the best. My pack was getting really heavy. 73

@@hamradiotube I have been looking at this and the Elecraft KX3. However the X5105 has a much better price point, and I wouldn't be as nervous leaving it in the car as an EDC/get home bag.

WJ6F yeah one of these days I’ll prob end up getting a KX2 but the X5105 is doing just fine for now.
