First, clean the engine before you take it apart. Try to avoid using adjustable wrenches. They can damage bolt heads. Spray some penetrating oil on all bolts and nuts you have to remove a while before you start. Nice project!
Love this, thanks for sharing your learning experience. Also you sparkplugs look like your mixture is running too rich, might need to re jet the carbs.
Start with new plugs and a clean air filter. After some time cut the engine at high revs and take the plugs out to inspect. These plugs look bad, but so is everything else inside the cylinder and head. Look at the valves!
I also bought a 2nd engine, the original engine the bearing had given up in the gear box so I had to split the cases I finally dismantled it but removing the head was a nightmare, and took weeks, as I didn't want to damage the seal between the 2 parts, as they are bother aluminium. Even one of the rods to conect them both together snapped because of rust freezing them both together
Have the same model as you. Maybe I will convert mine into a Cafe Racer this winter. When it comes to springs, I can recommend the progressive fork springs from Wirth. This means that your bike doesn't float like that. I swapped my fittings with the ones from the Kawasaki ZXR 400, which makes it much easier to pull the clutch and the brake lever is easier to reach because the levers are adjustable. Nice vid, mine is not starting, and wasn't running fine before. Starter goes round, nothing there with battery jumped. Pushing doesn't work, can't even move the backwheel in 1 on the stand. I hope not, but am guessing a bearing isn't sitting wel.
