Ready to upgrade Xk's nice model of Lyle Shelton's famous RARE BEAR, a world championship Unlimited Class air race winner many times over. The plane and owner/pilot were long-time favorites of mine and of many race fans, and the plane raced up until 2015 when it was retired.
I started my project with a replacement airframe instead of tearing down a ready-to-fly bird. Saves me money and makes modding easier. You can actually get the entire RTF bird for $60 at AliExpress. Next time I will use a pre-made plane just to try something different.
Power is from a Talon 1204 6100kV brushless motor and the usual, reliable 7A 1S-2S brushless ESC I like to use in most of my custom builds. The Talons are hard to find today, so I recommend the Eachine 1304 6000kV as a substitute for 1S power.
The receiver is the Spektrum Eflite AS6410L, a favorite of mine because it has AS3X to help deal with flying featherweight airplanes on windy days, AND because you can program AS3X for different mounting orientations or even turn it off completely and other options using the SPMA3060 USB dongle cable.
Even though aileron pushrod linkage is available for the A220 I decided to make my own just for the heck of it. I did order a set of linkages for the second build I am doing though.
As usual the rubber-like paint peeled off the white foam easily with simple handling. So after the plane was complete I ordered a second new fuselage and gave it light coatings with "MiniWax" clear urethane spray paint to protect the factory paint job. I like to use the SATIN finish version.
Then I repeated the building process, stripping out and moving everything from the peeling-paint body to the new fuselage, and now the plane looks awesome again. The urethane overcoat will help to keep it looking nice longer and prevent peeling.
Here is a parts list by request... Substitute what you cannot find.
The 1204 6100kV Talon motors are gone.
I use these 1204 6000kV motors now, also sold under the "EACHINE" brand name: www.aliexpress.us/item/325680...

EFLU4864 2S DSXM receiver (use the receiver of your preference): www.ebay.com/itm/225517001434...
Urethane spray paint I used (clear satin finish): www.flooranddecor.com/wood-an...
Prop hub. Prop needs boring out with a #23 or 4mm drill bit (ream by hand): E-flite Prop Adapter with Setscrew 1.5mm EFLM1933: www.ebay.com/itm/295797984308...
I hope to maiden the Bear soon. Happy flying!

Nice build... Too bad about the crappy factory paint... Had you not mentioned it I was going to say spray a clear Foam Safe coating on the Plane before building... BTW some links to the Parts used in the build would be useful for other wanting to build build one.

Consider it done my friend. Hope you liked the latest song selection. Happy flying! The clear urethane paint really did the trick in protecting the facory paint. Happy flying!

How much weight did the clear add to the plane?

Have you decided on a brick esc and motor for the 2s version? My bear came with bad servo out of box..so decided to play with it. Thanks, wildman.

I hope I can mod planes like you some day…I have a ranger 600 I want to change motor and it has ailerons but don’t function I want to make it a 4 channel later on

I have a video here where I convert my Ranger 400 to brushless. It might give you some ideas.

Have this same plane and I just swapped out the stock board for a dsmx brick with linear servos. What brand of paint did you use and what method of application did it require? Yours looks awesome and I would like a similar result!

I wish they would if made this one brushless out of the box, kind of a shame to put a brushed motor/gearbox in such an iconic airplane 😒

Why did you replace the receiver? What was the amperage rating of the original ESC? How much weight did the clear coat add, and did you only clearcoat the fuselage? I have the Rage T-28, Volantex Sport Cub 500, and just recently bought this Rare Bear. I've assembled my Bear but haven't flown it yet or made any mods. On the T-28 and Cub, I added scotch tape to the painted areas of the fuselage that I most commonly handle. This has kept the paint in good shape and doesn't add much weight. The tape holds up well too. I want to fly my Bear, but the flight controls seem wonky. There's something wrong there. I need to de more research and figure it out. Thanks for the video.

Greetings. I swapped receivers because I use Spektrum transmitters using their DSMX signal protocol. Plus the AS3X system they offer let's me fly micro planes on windy days without restricting me with bank angle limits or self-leveling the plane for me. It just counters wind gusts, which lightweight micros can barely handle. The built-in brushed motor ESC is either 3A or 5A depending on how old the airplane was that it came from. Their 2S receivers have 5A brushless motor ESCs. I applied the clear-coat in several very light layers, letting each coat dry for an hour or more. Even EPP foam can be attacked by the paint solvents if sprayed on too thick. When fully dry it only added 2-3 grams to the plane at most. I sprayed everything. Urethane paint is flexible and won't crack or flake off like enamel or lacquer. Xk's receivers are problematic in some of their aircraft, usually with tail control. You can get a V761 protocol receiver for low wing aircraft like the Rage T-28 and Volantex P-51 for $20 in some places and retro-fit it in the Bear, so I'd swap the receiver and fly it with your T-28 or Volantex transmitter (The receiver in the high-wing Sport Cub 500 will not work as it cannot be mounted inverted as low-wing airplanes require). This would work in your Rare Bear and operate with the rage or Volantex transmitter. Screw holes may not line up so you'd have to glue the receiver in, which is how many of these planes came anyway. No motor plug so you'd have to solder the motor wires on: usa.banggood.com/Eachine-Mini-Mustang-P-51D-or-Mini-F4U-or-Mini-T-28-Trojan-RC-Airplane-Fixed-Wing-Spare-Part-4CH-Onboard-Servo-Receiver-Board-With-Gyro-p-1601170.html The newest receivers have motor plugs but cost a bit more. You can find them at AliExpress.

Thanks, I bought a T-28 receiver. What brand urethane did you spray your Bear with? I'll have to look at that.
