Eachine Mini Mustang P-51 - DSMX mod part 2 - 1S Brushless conversion

(Edit: The 3000kv 1105 motor was insufficient on 1S power, so it was swapped out for an 1108 6000KV motor that proved successful. Later I tried a 1207 7500Kv and 10A ESC that proved even faster, but drains the pack quickly.)
Final step in my first 1S powered Mustang mod project is swapping the life-limited brushed coreless motor and gear reduction unit with a direct drive brushless outrunner motor.
This requires the use of an external brushless ESC. My second Mustang mod was easier, as I just swapped in a Spektrum 2S brick with a built-in brushless ESC. Making the first plane brushless is a bit more tricky.
The Spektrum AS6410L receiver brick (Used in the Eflite PT17 Stearman) does NOT offer an external ESC output as the AR6400 bricks do. I guess this bit of code was left out of those AS boards. And so to get a signal from the receiver to operate the brushless ESC, I had to use channel 6 on the brick for throttle control and a transmitter that offers channel mixing to connect channel 1 (throttle) and channel 6 (flaps) together. My TX choice was a Spektrum DX6i.

Motor is a Hobby King AP05 3000KV outrunner. Just about any 1106-1108 outrunner in the 3000KV - 3500KV range will do: hobbyking.com/en_us/hobbyking...
Prop hub adapter = Great Planes 1.5mm motor shaft / 3mm prop shaft.

The motor does not have to be pried out. This is usually some kind of hotglue. Just soke it with alcohol. It will let go after a few minutes.. When the alcohol is vaporized glue can be applied again.

Sounds like the prop needs balancing I did my standard one last night,bit of sellotape on one side,and then swap to the other...the difference was amazing...like butter now...but I’m sure you know this..cheers for the content.

(Late reply): It turned out to be a defective motor. I found out when the same motor was swapped out of this plane and went on my MIG-29. Happy flying!

Hi there, I hv a corsair f4u from the same maker like your P51. I wonder can i convert it to brushless by just swap out the ESC n motor? Can i still use the original RX n TX? Thanks

I have tried, but the receiver will not bind unless a brushed motor is connected to it. The ESC is built into the receiver on the same circuit board.

Hi. Can I connect on my eachine Mustang stronger coreless 1023 motor to the brick instead of the original 1020 to increase thrust? Or is it not that simple? Thank you for answer.

That should work just fine. Whether it will increase thrust or not is unknown. It depends on the RPM rating of the motor. For instance, a 1024 motor taken from an Eachine E120 helicopter that typically runs on 2S power (7.4v) might run slower on the airplane's 1S battery power (3.7v) than the original 1020 motor. Only trying this experiment will tell for sure if it is better or not.

@@Doggeslife My 1020 motor on Eachine Mustang stopped working. I need to increase the thrust of the engine to at cca 80 grams so that I can add some weight to the plane. That's why I bought a Mustang from Skynetic, which has a stronger engine, and I want to try to change it. I know that there is a possibility of conversion or changing everything to brushless. I have a Flysky I6 transmitter, but for now I want to try the cheapest solution by replacing a stronger coreless motor. BTW, do I understand correctly - that the motor is stronger when it is longer for the same diameter? Or is it not a rule? Thanks for the answer and sorry to bother you. I see that you have a lot of experience and I am a beginner with no knowledge.

58 grams with 360mAh battery fitted, 48.1g without. I do not know the weight of the unmodded plane, but I suspect little to no weight gain. The motor and esc feel as light if not lighter than the brushed motor and gearbox, and the Spektrum brick is 2.3g lighter than the Eachine item. Maybe a gram added for the extra red paint (guess-timated).

Hi there,a bit unrelated to this vid but…I just got to my caravan after a month’s absence,and it seems we had a small visitor,who only likes ‘plane’ food.A mouse ate my mustang and spitfire…! So,the electrics are still good,and all the control parts.Have you had any experience of putting theses innards into a balsa airframe..I was thinking the Vintage Aeroplane Co’s…Tiger moth (18’) It would be my first conversion…wadya think ? Interested to see how the AS3 may make these more viable ?…How hard could it be ?!

Mouse attack? Wow! That' a new one. Sounds like a good plan. I grew in this hobby building balsa kits and fitting radios and engines into them. Really no different than putting them in foam airframes. Lots of fun. Give it a go!

@@Doggeslife ironically…the mouse tunnelled into both boxes,through the styrene inner packaging,and pretty much,JUST ate the plane…although he ate a lot more of the spit than the Mustang…he probably fancied a ‘full English’ I reckon the Mustang is saveable…it’s got nine lives that old thing.The spitfire WAS brand new ! DOH !

hello again, I can't find a brushless motor for Esc rc xr-7a micro dshot600, only high-speed ones are available, maybe you have some kind of model in mind for a 1s-2s battery. I'm just a beginner in this business, I have never collected anything, but I liked your idea.

Well, the test flight was unimpressive. The 3000KV motor was not strong enough. The plane has less power now than it did with the geared brushed motor. I'm going to run tests with bigger motors and similar sized ones with a higher KV rating (RPMS per each single volt applied). If I find 1S is just not enough power for direct drive then I will convert it to 2S like my second Mustang. I do not wish to go back to a gearbox drive. UPDATE: I have an 1108 6000KV motor coming to replace the 1105 3000KV. Then I'll run a few tests to see if it will offer acceptable performance. I was looking for a suitable 1306 motor but a suitable 1S-compatible version is hard to find. more to come.

More voltage....even if you have to give up run time. Do have to admit, whoever designed the plane hit the best combination of weight and power anybody could ask for. I like flying mine on windy days, i can point it into the wind and fly it backwards. I have taught several kids to fly with mine. Find a kid who has messed with rc cars and has orientation covered i will have them flying solo in 10 min or less.

@병장이 Ya, they pretty much kick ass...just need to learn orientation....in beginner mode and get into trouble it will straighten itself right out...if you know its gona crash you need to learn to cut the throttle...i have over 100 flights on mine..i live in the desert..no place to land...took the landing gear off, took a large size paper clip, straighten it out and use it for a nose skid and clear packing tape on the bottom..i land on gravel and it still looks new...probably the best rc value around

@@blackbirdxx928 So far I have run this one with this 6000Kv motor with success, a 2S version that screamed using the 3000Kv AP05 and a 1S version using a 1207 7500Kv that worked best so far. See them in my other videos. I think a 1204 on 1S might prove best with performance and run time. I recently mounted the latter in a Corsair but have yet to set fly it with all the virus self-quarantining going on here right now. Happy flying!
