This is great. I've got a lot of older experience and used Vixen before. This time around I'm looking at using xLights. A quick note on what multicast actually does. It is a technique where the messages being sent to the network actually go to all devices which would be listening on the multicast address. If you are using many different controllers and don't want to muck about with setting individual IP addresses, i.e. just want to have your router to use DHCP to assign addresses using multicast can really reduce a lot of configuration overhead.

@@How2Pixel I definitely will. I will probably pick your brain for ideas haha With the DMX controller were the issues with key fobs happening when it was just plugged into the wall outlet or did it have to be hooked up to the controller when you had the issues? I just wanted to test it to see if I was gonna have issues with it before I put it into my light show
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 5 месяцев назад
Sorry for the late reply. The issue with the key fobs only happens when the controller is sending a signal to control the bracelets. If the DMX controller was only plugged into the wall, or plugged into the controller, but no information was being sent, then there is no problems. However, when you tell the DMX controller to change what the bracelets are doing, then it affects the key fobs. This is why a lot of people only program the bracelets to change every couple of seconds, that way a signal isn't constantly being sent to them.

Thanks for this video! Amazing stuff! I was wondering how would you compare this to any other "industry" standard programmes like MADRIX, ETC Mosaic and Enttec?
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 6 месяцев назад
I'm going to be completely honest, I've never used any program other than Xlights, so it wouldn't be right for me to compare those with Xlights. All I can tell you is that Xlights is not an "industry" like programming software. It was made by people who are into making "smaller" (compared to massive commercial light shows) light shows as a hobby, and its main goal was to make it easier for other people into this hobby without much experience to program a display. However, over the years, Xlights has expanded and there are lots of people who use this now for commercial displays, even though it was made for people more in the hobby of making light shows. The Xlights team completely embraces this though, and they like everyone, no matter display size, to be able to use the software to program their show. I know a guy near me who used to run a smaller light display on his house with Xlights, and over the years it grew bigger and bigger. Now he does a whole commercial display that you can drive through/walk through at a zoo, and he still uses Xlights. So overall, I'm not sure if Xlights is comparable with industry-level software, but I can tell you, it has a lot of features for big and small displays, and once you get over the learning curve, it's very easy to use. Also, for it to be 100% free, no signup, no credit card, no information needed, it is amazing. Hopefully this gave you the answer you were looking for!

Very good video and extremely helpful to a first time Christmas light show. One question, instead of replacing 1000's of incandescent mini lights at one time, is there a way to control each 120V mini light node (typically a string of lights) from xLights?
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 8 месяцев назад
You cannot control each individual light on a strand, but you can turn on and off the whole strand in Xlights. I know you can use LOR controllers in Xlights, and some I'm pretty sure some can run AC lights. There's also the Pixel2Things board www.wiredwatts.com/p2tac9 that can take pixel data and use it to turn on and off AC outputs. There are definitely ways to do it, and I've seen many people use pixels and AC lights, but I don't have much experience with programming AC lights. This is probably as much as I can help, but hopefully you found this useful!

Awesome video thank you! Newbie here, Question for you, when you upload your sequences in Xlights to your controller via FPP connect, are you uploading your FSEQ files to your FPP (PI) and falcon player or just one of them? Im being told that adding your PI to controllers in XLights is fairly new so it may be messing me up, I did add it as player only so it didn't take up any channels or universes, thank you again!
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 10 месяцев назад
Glad you found the video useful! To answer your question, it sounds like you are running a Raspberry Pi as the main computer for the show to send the data to your controller(s). Is that correct? If so, you are going to want to upload the FSEQ files to just the pi. Now Falcon Player and FPP are the same thing. FPP stands for "Falcon Pi Player", but most people call it "Falcon Player" since it can run on more than just a Raspberry Pi nowadays. So to be clear, FPP (Falcon player) is the software you run on the pi only. You won't need to upload the files to your controller unless you are running it in standalone mode (where the controller acts as the PI and controller in one). For your setup, you are basically running it so the PI holds the data. Then when it's time for the show, you send the data to your controller which then acts as a converter and converts the data to "pixel data" so your pixels can read it. Since the controller is acting as a converter, there is no need to put the files on there too. Does this help answer your question?
@tonylove3290
@tonylove3290 10 месяцев назад
@@How2Pixel Thank you for that explanation I appreciate it, yes it answers my question! And yes you are correct, what I have currently is a PI running FPP that will run the show, and a Falcon F16V4 that will be in remote mode Im guessing?? which will receive the data from the PI. With that being said do i need to set up the pi as a controller in Xlights then? or no? One last question please, I have one more controller that I already had on my house, it's a "Jellyfish" running WS2818B lights under the eaves of my house. It took me a while to get the Pi and F16V4 to talk (I had the wrong IP Addresses set up), you had another video that helped me through that so thank you. How would I set up a controller I do not know the IP address too? It's set up through WIFI so I can control it on an app. I do know the WIFI IP address but when I hook it up to ethernet It will change right? Any thoughts on setting up a controller that is not a common brand? Thank you again for all your help, your videos are awesome! (jellyfishlighting.com/product-details/)
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 10 месяцев назад
To answer your first question about your F16V4 being in remote mode, that depends. Are you going to have your F16V4 plugged directly into the PI with ethernet? Most setups normally do that, but if you were planning to use it wirelessly, then yes you will have to use remote mode. Now if you are using remote mode on the controller, you will have to upload the FSEQ files to the controller and the PI. The way remote mode works is the pi will basically tell the controller "Start sequence (let's say) 5". Then the controller will look through it's SD card you put in it and say "Oh I found sequence 5, let's start it". Then the Pi will check it every few seconds to make sure the controller is in sync. It uses way less data than the PI trying to constantly send every frame of every sequence over wifi to the controller. So if you will be using remote mode for the controller, you will have to upload the sequences there too. To answer your next question about setting up the PI in xlights, no you do not need to unless the PI is running lights directly on it, which I don't think you are from what I'm understanding. The only time you have to set it up is if you have like a hat on it running lights, a TV/projector hooked to it, or a panel. Since you have no lights directly on the PI, you won't have to. However, you will still have to set up the PI inside FPP for your universe count, channel count, etc. To answer your final question about the Jellyfish controller, I'm honestly not sure if you will be able to run it with the PI, even if you set up the right IP address. The controller has to be able to use the same protocol that the PI uses to communicate. Do you know if the controller accepts E1.31, Artnet, or DDP data? If it doesn't, you may be out of luck. I tried looking up to see if F16v4s can run WS2818B pixels in case you can't use the controller, but I didn't see any info about those types. So my best advice would be to see if your controller can accept any of the types of data I said, and if they do, let me know and I can help you with your other questions about connecting it to the PI.
@tonylove3290
@tonylove3290 10 месяцев назад
Yes I will have the PI hooked up to the F16V4 via an ethernet cable, I will end up using a network switch as soon as I figure out the Jellyfish controller, assuming it works of course. So to clarify, a PI will be hooked up to a network switch, which will branch out to the two controllers (Jellyfish and F16V4) I was able to get them to talk last night once i figured out the IP address issues so the sequences are now working. If I set it up this way is it best to set up the F16V4 in remote mode or something else? It makes sense to send the sequences to the PI and F16V4 as you said in your previous explanation, thank you! You're also correct, I am not running any lights directly off the PI. Since you brought it up, I cant find anything online about Hat's, do you have any good resources on what they are and how they work? Alot of videos briefly discuss them but nothing in depth that Im finding. Lastly , I reached out to Jellyfish to see if they can handle any of the data you mentioned, Im waiting to hear back. The installer said other people have been able to run the lights successfully using a raspberry PI so we will see, he had no idea what a PI was so thats saying something. If a falcon can't run WS2818's, are there any other controllers that can? Thank you again for your help!
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 10 месяцев назад
Since you will have the F16V4 wired into the pi, whether directly or through a network switch, the most common way to run it is in E1.31/Artnet mode. I'm not sure if it's still called that on the V4, but on the V3 that's what it is. If you run it this way you only need the files on the PI, and then the PI will send the sequences over ethernet to the controller. As for the hats, there aren't a lot of new videos that explain how they work, but there is one older one you can check out here that explains how to use the rPI-28D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ah233Bkc_yo.html This is probably the most common small hat for a PI, and it can run 2,000 pixels across 2 ports if I remember correctly. If you'd like to buy one, you can find them on Wired Watts for about $40 www.wiredwatts.com/hanrpi28d or on Hason Electronics for about $30 www.hansonelectronics.com.au/product/rpi-28dplus/ Finally, to answer your last question about what controllers can run WS2818s, I'm honestly not sure. Usually Falcon's have the most options available for pixel types, so if they don't have it, I'm not sure who will. I'm thinking of some other big controller names that I know of, but most only have a few pixel types, some even work with only WS2811 pixels. I looked up some WS2818 pixel controllers, but most of them are for businesses or HUGE light shows, and they cost a fortune. Could you send me a link to the exact model Jellyfish controller you have? I could look and see if I find any info that suggests it may work with the Pi.

Thank you for the tutorial. My question is what to do next? How does it go from Xlights to the actual controller?
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 7 месяцев назад
After you finish programming all your sequences in Xlights or just a few, but you're ready to move to the next step, the next thing would be to look for a show player. A show player holds all your sequences and controls when they are sent to the controller. There are a couple of different types of show-player setups you could have. The first would be to run Xschedule on a computer. Xschedule is a program made along with Xlights and is used to schedule what time each night for your show to start. The computer Xschedule is running on will then connect to the controller and send all the data to it. The next option is to use Falcon Player (also known as FPP) as your show player. FPP runs on a Raspberry Pi which is a really small cheap computer (around $80) and is packed with features. FPP is free software you get off of github that runs on the pi and controls when to start and stop the show. There are so many features that I would be here for hours explaining them all. FPP connects to your controller and it will send the data for the lights to it when it's time like Xschedule. The other option is to just not use a show player at all. Some controllers have a mode called "Standalone mode" where they act as their own show player. However, you can basically just schedule the light show times on it, and that's it. There are no fancy features but it's enough to get the job done. Personally, I use FPP on a raspberry pi and recommend anyone else new to this to use it. You won't be disappointed in a few years when you learn how to use all the features. I do have some videos explaining how to use FPP, but not Xschuedule since I don't use it. Hope this helps!

Any suggestions on doing a ball drop for New Year’s Eve
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 8 месяцев назад
Hmm that's definitely possible, but I'm not sure how it would all work. I know a guy who used to run a light show near me that did something like this and was on the great Christmas light fight for it here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oSCUJiwgQZQ.html . I'd say maybe use a Pixel2Things board and use pixel data to control a motor or something to lift it and make it fall. You can find one that can control AC things here www.wiredwatts.com/p2tac9 Basically, it's setup as 3 pixels inside of Xlights, and you can control the 9 channels from those 3 pixels to turn on and off the AC outputs on the board. Other than that I'm not sure how to build anything or how to hook it up with a motor. Good luck with your project though!

I wish I could help answer your question, but I don't know much about LOR controllers so I'm not sure. I'm assuming if it works like every other ethernet controller, you should be able to. However, using Xlights alone to run a show isn't the best option, so I'd look into using Xschedule as a show player to start and stop the sequences. Xlights is more for just programming the sequences, not running them.

In your opinion, If Im trying to keep my pixel brightness to 30%, should I set the ports to 30% on my F16V4 and Xlights? Or just the F16v4? Thank you again, your videos are awesome!
@How2Pixel

Thank you so much, glad you find the videos useful! I'd recommend just setting the brightness on your controller. Xlights does have a setting in the color tab when programming to adjust your brightness, and there I always leave it at 100 (Unless I have an effect where I need to fade the brightness with that setting). There's also a setting on the controller tab called "Default port brightness" under each of your controllers. You will only see this if you've checked the "Full Xlights control" option for your controller. This does the same thing as setting the brightness on your controller. It just does it for you when you use the upload output button in Xlights for your controller. So for me, I usually set it manually or use the "Default port brightness" to let Xlights set my controller up for me.

Thank you again! Do you happen to know how to set a few null pixels at the end of a prop to get me to the next prop? For example I have 3 spiders on the same string roughly 54 pixels each, I will have 10-15 pixels in between them that i do not want lit up, any suggestions on how to execute this? Thank you! @@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 9 месяцев назад
This is very easy to do with a Falcon controller. In Xlights, set everything up normally. Do not put in the 10 to 15 extra pixels, just put in the spiders and nothing else. Then, on the string ports page on your controller, you'll see there is a plus sign next to every port. If you click that it will show 2 rows for that one port. So let's say you have your first spider of 54 ports. On the very top row of that port, put in the channel numbers and pixel count for just that spider. Then in the next row, put in the channel count and pixel count for the next spider. Except this time, in the box that says null, type in the number of unused pixels that came before that spider. And then if I remember correctly, you can click the plus sign again and add another row to do the same thing for your 3rd spider. Here is a little example of how it would be set up. Let's say these are all for port 1 on your controller and the 3 spiders start at channel 1. PORT 1: ======================== (Row 1 for spider 1) Start channel: 1 - Pixel count: 54 - Null: 0 (as long as there are no unused pixels before this spider) (Row 2 for spider 2) Start channel: 163 - Pixel count: 54 - Null: 15 (if you had 15 pixels between spider 1 and 2) (Row 3 for spider 3) Start channel: 325 - Pixel count: 54 - Null: 15 (if you had 15 pixels now between spider 2 and 3) ================================ Hopefully this makes sense. Let me know if you need any more help!

Where do I buy any of the equipment, starting off small. Nothing available in Ireland
@How2Pixel

I'm going to be fully honest, I'm not sure. Most of the places I've bought pixels from are either in the US or China. I know Wired Watts has some information here www.wiredwatts.com/shipping about shipping, and they do some international shipping. Wired Watts carries pixels, controllers, wire, power supplies, almost everything you need for a show. Their customer service has been great and I haven't had any problems with them before. Boscoyo Studios also offers international shipping and you can find most of your coro, props, and pixel mounting supplies there. You can find out their information here boscoyostudio.com/faqs/ Good luck with your show!

how do i add more songs in the same sequence? I currently have 1 song finished but would like to add more songs. Thanks
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 20 дней назад
You would like to add multiple songs into just one sequence? This is possible but I don't usually recommend it for a couple of reasons. First, when you're playing your show, if you want to skip to a certain song, you can no longer select the sequence since it's all in one now, so you'd have to wait for it to play to get there. Second, changing one little effect can cause you to have a larger render time since it has to render ALL the parts in the one sequence. But if you are ok with this, the way you have to do it is edit the audio track and combine all the songs you want into one mp3 file. There are some different tools to do this but I recommend audio-joiner.com/ because it's the most simplest. So just join all the songs you want in one sequence into one audio file.

@@How2Pixel ah gotcha that makes sense. so the best option would be for me to create a new sequence for each song and run x lights schedule
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 19 дней назад
Yes, if you're planning on running an actual show during the Christmas season (or whatever your show is for), this would be best. Now if it's just a one time thing or you won't be running it much, you could just run the sequences straight from Xlights, but it doesn't work without someone opening the sequence file(s) and pushing the start button. Additionally, if you don't want your computer being tied up running Xschedule, you could buy a Raspberry Pi for a little under $100 and set that up to automatically run your show with Falcon Player (FPP).

Many thanks for this! I have started trying to recreate the below video on a very small scale using WLED on a ESP8266 as my 6 year old boy loves light shows and it gives me something to do :) thanks for your hard work with these videos! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MfCApCkEQJU.html

This is way too complex. I'm more lost now. I have an RGB ws2811 50 pix string and a Falcon 16v4 and the only way I can get them lit up is testing them on the falcon controller. The xLight to visualizer doesn't work. Following what you're saying and it's not working. So frustrating.
@How2Pixel
@How2Pixel 7 месяцев назад
I'm really sorry about that. Do you have your controller on and the IP address in xlights for the visualizer to work? The controller has to be on the same network as the computer running Xlights. What other ways have you tried to get the lights to light up? Is your controller receiving data from a show player like Falcon Player or is it set up to receive the data from something like Xschedule?

@@How2Pixel I'd definitely ignore the previous commenter, probably just a troll. I do professional lighting shows for a living, I'm talking stadium concerts, festivals and TV shows on multiple 100k dollar control systems and Xlights is incredible for a free product. From what i can see, It fits the hobby market perfectly and makes everything so simple I'm actually very impressed wth what it can do and the shows you can create from your computer. P.S, Excellent informative video, I was curious how some of the home light shows I've seen online in the past worked and downloaded Xlights myself to play around with it, was overwhelmed with options, and after a half hour of clicking around and getting no further than some candy canes on a blank screen, opened this video and now understand so much more. I appreciate the major detail and editing that went into this massive video tutorial. Very well done.
