I honestly feel like you missed the point of this movie. I believe this film to be more about self discovery and how beautiful and enthralling events like XOXO can be. And I've even seen some DJ praise this movie for its music and the way it interprets the shows, its die hard fans and some classes of performers. Yes I well say that there are quite a few stereotypes in this film but i believe it makes up for them along with its problems with stunning visuals and really satisfying character arcs. All of the main characters that this movie goes through there own emotional conflicts and the way they push past them(at least to me) was very inspired and really satisfying. I love it. But I can still respect your opinion if you weren't that much of a fan.
If you have a serious agenda to look at this film with objective eyes, then I suppose your judgement is largely correct. I just finished watching the movie myself, and while I agree with what you say about the characters and story, I absolutely loved everything else about the film. This isn't a project that represents a love for film or well told stories, but I believe that it is a love letter to everyone and anyone who might be vaguely interested in the EDM scene. Its not perfect, over exaggerated, and definitely pushes its self on the viewer sometimes, but as someone who loves the music and the philosophy that is usually associated with EDM culture, I can't help but love this film. Also, maybe my taste in music is just absolute trash, but there were some tracks in the film that I absolutely adored, and will definitely be added to my playlist. My personal score: 3/5
But, i see the movie to enjoy the music, the vibe of the festival, not to enjoy a great history or idk, if u like EDM u will like the movie, just that.
Awesome review! I totally agree with what you were saying about EDM movies trying to have some deeper meaning that ultimately ends up being cheesy or lame. I was interested in checking this one out since it is on Netflix, but I may have to give it a pass lol. Keep up the good work my man!
I really liked the movie just cause it was watchable and visually very pleasing to me (plus it touched on some things thatre important to me, albeit poorly) sort of disneys Hercules style
I feel like I'm sort of crazy for liking this movie as much as I do. The thing is, it takes a lot to impress me. I like how well this movie embodies that feeling of 'in the moment' and in my opinion it secretly wants you to look away from all the rave culture. Throughout the movie, ravers were portrayed almost as a parody, which I think was not a mistake. Btw, I love the scene that you pointed out, the one where the two characters are talking and the female character goes on babbling about love? Yeah the guy male character, the successful founder is obviously seeing through her character, which is so obviously spiritually lost. And that's just it, it presents to you this idea of a the movie about rave culture, but at the same time it is so self conscious about it. The fact that it comes from so many perspectives makes it all the more interesting. Final thing, I am a bedroom producer as well, a serious one, and the movie does the field justice.
Chris D'Elia's standup leaves some to be desired, but his Laugh Factory improv stuff from 5+ years ago and his harsh deadpan (which makes his instagram and snapchat refreshing and very at odds with the 'normie' audience of his stand-up ) is what he currently does well. I hope he can get into more spots of similar material in the near future
I liked that he mentioned Blanka (assuming you got that far), but nah, I didn't finish it either. The guy needs to stop laughing at his own jokes as well.
Yeah there were so many subplots that it was a little too difficult to even follow the movie. I like EDM but this kind of just missed the mark. Not an awful movie but nothing I would recommend anyone to watch either.
You deserve like 100 times the subs you have right now, seriously. I mean, you have the production value and overall video quality of someone who does already.
Lost me at the 1:10 mark. You can certainly ask a lot more from dance music than the EDM being churned out mainly for American audiences. This specific brand of dance music is not a continuation of disco or rave but probably mainstream trance and beefa tunes of the 90s and 00s. Modern dance music can be so muh more... Just listen to some Palms Trax, Leon Vynehall, Four Tet. Even something like Eats Everything, Skream, or Jamie Jones is miles ahead of this trash
