The second I see a pen display that I am remotely interested in.... I come straight here. I trust your opinion on these products more than anyone. Thank you so much for this review. This gives me an idea of what I might need when it comes displays.
I've spent hours and hours of my life watching you drawing slow, diagonal lines with and without a ruler. I don't need new drawing gear, I just like your reviews.
Still, 2k is enough to push for better competitive prices, at least with the entry level Wacom products. I’d rather buy a 20-something inch display with 2k rather than Wacom’s 16/22 inch Cintiqs with just HD.
I've had this for about a year now, and I freaking love it. Don't have anything to compare it to but your review helped me into getting it. Love your reviews and am now thinking of getting a smaller one that's more portable!
Bought this one on sale for like $489! I was holding out on buying the 22E with the hopes that they were going to release a newer model. Lo and behold the 22R comes along and I knew I had to pick this one up. I will agree that driver installation is a bit difficult to set up because there are so many options and permissions you have to allow the software to access. But past that, this display has been working wonders for me. I've always wanted to work on a larger display coming from the original XP-Pen15.6 and man it is so nice!
An interesting observation, when you stressed out that it's a pen display, and several times it is, I realized how people don't really pay attention. I sold my old Cintiq 21UX couple of weeks ago and I had several questions about what operation system does it run on and does it have pre installed apps... like, guys, you are looking for a drawing tablet, and you have a description of it in the offer and yet you STILL ask about that? XD
Thre's a lot of people who try to get/change into digital art, and they didnt know a lot about the technology... While there's another person who knows about the technology (but suck at drawing)..
@@01_zenyobi lol that's me, except i love digital art, whenever i get interested in something i do research for 2+ hours cause there's no way I'm spending my parent's money in something i don't know (I'm 11) and i still don't understand as to how people buy something without already having a basic understanding of the product.
@@rin7836 I also love digital art and able to draw normal to average stuff (and also have enough Photoshop skill).. but I'm not that great at drawing (I can draw everything accurately from my view, except humans&animal, especially faces and hair). And about the question why people buy something without already having basic understanding of the product.. It's because Many people just use their hunch feeling and thinks that That they could understand the product just by taking a look at it. Or thinking it's just like another product they have before (without knowing it's a different product). Or you can simply said it's just their ignorance. For example, I remember one review from Amazon (Of Huion drawing monitor, I forget which one) A mother complaining because the tablet need to be connected to monitor and it doesn't include drawing app for her daughter to draw. She says that it's a scam that she had to buy it separately. And she also said it worked than her old tablet (because she don't have to install/connect to computer).. What we can learn from here ? Is that She think that because she also bought a Tablet before, she thinks that this Huion "Tablet" would be just like her old one, but bigger and better (and cheaper than the High end tablet on the market like ipad air, ipad pro, etc.). But then she thinks it's a scam, because "why tablet this big still needs to be connected to computer", Especially when her old one were smaller and doesn't need to. Forgoting that big and accurate display that could be used with pen would be pricier than regular big monitor.. We can see that she just bought what could be "cheap" and think with her hunch.. and when she finally know that she buy something different from what she thought, she just assume its a scam instead of accepting that her hunch is wrong/acknowledge that she buy the wrong thing.. Also that they have their own money, for something that's not that important/expensive (depends on the amount of Money they have)..
@@rin7836 Anyway, for a kid like you A Tablet would be perfect.. Ipad 7th gen + Apple pencil is the cheapest with best quality While the cheapest you can get is Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 with S pen. If you already have PC/Laptop, an display tablet would be good. The best Budget to performance ratio you can get is the Huion Kamvas 13 (non pro). It looks cool (nice body colour) and cheap with decent drawing screen and easy to set up. You can just connect it with USB C (if you have USB C thunderbolt/USB C Display) or just one Display adapter and 2 usb slot. No need for External power source like the one on this video. Or if you want the big size, you can get some old Huion Kamvas 20 (that still uses recharging pen, unlike nowadays Huion that already use non recharging pen. It's a good idea to save money for bigger screen, as it's still usable). If you plan to upgrade, there's Huion Kamvas pro 16 and XP Pen artist 15.6 pro (they're the same size). Or maybe the newest XP Pen Innovator 16, it has the coolest and anti-mainstream design.. Honorable mention : - Huion Kamvas 12 - XP Pen Artist 12 Pro - XP Pen Artist 13 Pro _________________________________________ If you want to minimize budget, You can choose graphics tablet (known as Pentab aka pentablet) It's harder to learn (since you need to draw without looking into your hands but the screen). The cheapest with decent feature I can get is the Huion H640P and XP Pen G640S It's kind of easy to learn since they're not too small.. Both had the same size of the Wacom small (some professional Artis use Wacom small). The best medium size tablet is Huion H1060P and XP Pen Deco Pro Small/medium. Avoid XP pen Deco 3, if you're want to save budget. Deco Pro Small is way better than that. Another honorable mention : - Huion H950P (I use this one, it was cheap in my country) - XP Pen Deco 01 V2 (must get the V2, the one without V2 have worse pen) - Huion Hs64 (alternative to H640P, there's yellow version that may appeal to some people) After one year of my research of tablets and stuff, that's all I can give to you.. Don't forget to save some of your spending. Either to buy some program/advise, or to upgrade your hardware.. I remember I was an reckless, and a dumb 11 year old back then... I would spent a lot of money to play in the gaming cafe.. And of course I have spending, but I use it for game too.. Then I realized, I spent too much.. enough amount to get a whole PC or something worth.. Especially at that time I was interested in tablets (Tablet for games,, I'm not smart enough to understand that if I learn to draw, I could use the skill professionally later. at that time, only Samsung tablet has Quad core processor, while the other only has double core or else and Ram for tablets were only about 512MB-1GB). And now, I don't want you to repeat my mistake (failing to balance game and learning skills). I give you the best Info I know...
2:08 Oh yeah baby, glove dance! Now my soul is satisfied. Funny/sad thing is that I went from a Wacom Intuos 4 that I bought used from a friend, to a new XP-Pen Artist 16 Pro. I used the XP-Pen for maybe 2 month and they I swapped back to the Wacom and it was not a conscious decision, it just happen. It was just recently that I noticed it and I think that it was that the screen was to small and the resolution was not as high as I wanted. It is not a bad product but I wish I knew this about my self before i bought it.
I doubt many people "downgrade" from Wacom. And I also find that the size tends to matter quite a lot. I've been drawing with a 15' drawing tablet for years and anything smaller or bigger implodes. So for now, any tech I buy is going to be around that size only
I wouldn't mind one of those 24' (or larger) drawing screens as long as the resolution is higher than just 1080p. I have a good friend that have the new big 27' Wacom Cintiq and I can't stop try it out each time I'm at his place.
Yeah,..I have learned that too. Everyone has their sweet spot when it comes to a comfortable working space. The goal here is to not go broke while trying to figure out what that spot is. I would love to try the app Procreate but a tiny 13" screen is NUTS in regards to the iPad. I have large hands and the lack of a decent sized bezel plus space needed for app GUI's would leave me with a stamp-sized working space. That's ridiculous for me! And NO,...I don't want to always have to keep zooming in and out. I think 32" sized Wacom's would also be the opposite; too large. I'm thinking 22-24" is where the balance is right for me. I have a 15" Notebook Pro and that still feels cramped.
@@kurai_sen7065 I "downgraded" from Wacom. Have had MULTIPLE cintiqs. Iv hated them all. I bought an Xp pen artist 15.6 Pro. And Ive never lived a tablet more. I later bought an artist 12 pro. Both tablets are amazing. I was a snob who didn't take anything but Wacom and Photoshop. I changed my mindset after some business changed happened to both Wacom and Adobe. Now I use XP pen and Clipstudio and literally couldn't be happier.
Once I fell asleep with my hand on the drawing tablet I’m the summer and when I woke up I was so scared that my hand was like literally stuck to the tablet
You've officially conviced me to get this over the Huion gt-221 ! 👌 those were the two in competition but your review is telling me everything i needed to know !
Where did you hear that? I'd like to see a source. I really wanna upgrade from my Cintiq 21UX, it's starting to really show its age now but I don't consider going to 1080p (from 1600x1200) a big enough upgrade. 2k resolution would be an instant buy from me. Edit: Nevermind, I found a source! www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/huion-at-ces-2020-latest-announced-graphics-tablets-are-ready-to-inspire-creatives-300980804.html
@@Floreum Yes! Should be here soon. I emailed them about 2 weeks ago. It may be the perfect size and resolution combination available (outside of Wacom) I'm VERY interested in it too and cannot wait to see how it behaves once in the market. I'm guessing March 2020. Edit: It was also on display at the CES recently.
Wait what !?!? No Parralax test ?? Come on, we want to see how much the distance between the glass and the pen tip. If you can, please show some pic (by replying this comment with a link of the picture)...
You can see in my channel a test I did when XP Pen sent me a firmware update for this tablet. There is some parallax, but I'm tottaly fine with it. It's not a perfection like iPad Pro, but way better than the old models of every pen displays.
Having to upgrade from my old screen tablet because the pen on it broke and the batteries are patented for whatever reason (not XP/WACOM/anything like that, a noname brand). Really excited for when I get this.
It was on sale for $499 in December but it was out of stock. I'm waiting for that price drop to happen again. I've been using a Wacom I bought years ago that has been having all sorts of issues for the last 3 years. When I reached out ot Wacom they said you just need to get a new one we aren't making new drivers for older machines. After that responseI refuse to buy another Wacom. A $2,500 device should last longer than 6-8 years.
Thanks for another useful insight. I would appreciate your in-depth take on parallax of these screens. Because on Huion kamvas it is a huge deal breaker.
Is Adobe RGB better than NTSC or are they both just similar? I have a Parblo Coast 22 and its a tad bit annoying whenever I'm reminded that the colors on that tablet look off when compared to another monitor or even my phone screen. Also, i don't see you mention color calibration much but whenever i Google other reviews there's so many ppl talking about getting or needing one of those Spyder calibrator things, what's your opinion on that topic?
Adobe RGB, NTSC, sRGB, DCI, etc. are just different percentages of the visible color spectrum, Wikipedia has a good page explaining them if you'd like to look into them further. Also, if you are serious about art, you should definitely go for the Spyder to guarantee color accuracy.
I've bought this display less then 24 hours ago, still waiting on the delivery. And while researching the topic(it is worth th price and comparing it with E version) was amused that there is no video about it from Brad. And here it is!
I almost missed the sale for this tablet! I would have to settle for imagining what my work would be like on a better screen if that $700 price tag was the take it or leave it price. Thankfully, I was able to get mine for $385. I kinda needed a new tablet anyway since my current one has been cursor hopping, screen tearing, it decalibrates at the edges constantly, and the pen connectivity registers clicks and gestures on its own without my input.
One way I would improve them is to decrease the display/bezel size A 20" feels like a 24" just bc of the express keys but also bc of the bezels There was to be enough bezel so that I can draw on the edges but the display could definitely be less frickin wide They could put express keys in the back, behind the bezels & display, have the other hand grip around the side to press them Obviously u can't see them but when I press the keys I don't look at them anyway, u learn which one is which
Could someone be so nice and tell me a history of the glorious glove dance? I discovered this channel several days ago and it baffles and amazes me at the same time. I mean if there's a compilation of all glove dances i would watch it xd
Great review as always Brad. A general question: Do any of the pen displays that you have reviewed make use of power over USB or Thunderbolt? Especially for the smaller ones, this seems to be the last big missing feature for people who need to take their work with them when travelling.
I finally got the Artist 12 Pro and I love it. My only complaint is that the newest drivers don't allow the pen to work (you need to use an older driver).
With the price being what it is, would you recommend this over the 22e? Stock for this model, as well as price, are making it difficult to get a hold of, while the 22e is readily in stock on Amazon and is under $450. Would you say the differences between the E and R are enough to say wait for the r to restock and come down in price, or do you feel the 22e is of about equal quality? Asking because i need to upgrade my setup due to health reasons (larger tablet is easier on my arm/wrists, and the buttons let me use the tablet for shortcuts rather than a keyboard) and i'm not sure how long it will take to restock and or drop the price of the 22r. Love all your videos, they've been a huge help to me over the years.
They could go for a step inbetween Wacom Cintiq Pros and this for a competitive price. I see many of these tablets jump from full HD straight to "4K". Why not a QHD(2560x1440) bonded screen in the 16" to 22" range? I can only recall one screen tablet with this specific resolution and it's no longer made so it's another space just waiting to be filled. I wouldn't imagine it being quite as cheap as $700 but that would be an awesome price point to aim for. The only other way to improve and have the specs remain the same I see is with added accessories such as an adjustable stand which would be more likely. Things like that can really tip a consumer towards your product imo.
The missing feature is *touch*. I've gotten so used to drawing in Leonardo on a Surface Go that I can't suddenly give up touch... It seems that if I want a large touch drawing display I have to get a Cintiq Pro or something in that price range.
Hey brad, amazing review have cleared all query I've had but does this support multi touch or you have to completely rely on stylus? And will it work with auto desk sketchbook?
I have the Artist 22E Pro and XP-Pen absolutely need to start selling 4K versions of these larger displays. 1080p is too low a pixel density for a display of this size. It's not impossible to draw on but it is very noticeable.
Hello Brad, thanks for your reviews - I really love your videos. Since you have already tested a few different graphic tablets, I have a question for you. What would you choose for your own work: XP-Pen Artist 22R or Huion Camvas Pro 22? And why? :) I would be very interested in your opinion and experience.
room for upgrade? Make it have a high refresh screen just for the heck of it, a display for drawing, gaming and just watching in general would be sick, but just imagining the amount of dough that would be needed to be thrown for such a gadget...
8:12 OUTSTANDING diagonal-ruler test (your freehand tests were already telling it). I can see it from here. That's it. The device is a winner. And 90% Adobe RGB coverage... (yeah, saying it covers 120% sRGB is a bit non useful, but all brands do this).
ØldWine from my experience I can’t live without pinch zoom. I still use a pinch zoom when navigating my drawing on a Cintiq pro 16. I’m fine on. 11” pro when drawing. But I need that pinch zoom. Regular drawing both are fine.
If you're just a begginers , with no PC or advanced hardware/software experience, and didn't need any specific feature/program from Window that didn't exist in apple and other OS (which is rarely happens), It would be wiser for you to choose iPad 7th gen instead of Wacom One Display.
I have a Huion and I am looking into XP-Pen because Huion definitely has driver issues. Mine regularly stops working and i need uninstall and reinstall the driver, and even then sometimes it doesn't work. I once tried 10 times and then had to wait a few days, try again and only then did it work. The tablets themselves have good quality but i am definitely dissapointed in their drivers that keep giving up on me.
I have xppen 15.6 pro. The moment i plug it on pc, (with required driver installed first), then everything seems ok. 6 month has passed, my only problem is my arts not improved LOL. People buying tablet with their hard earn money for drawing and fun, not buying something to add burden or to become 'technician' to the tablet.
I'm waiting if there will be any ultrawide ver. i already had kamvas 13 but my main monitor is ultrawide. without messing tools position, kamvas screen followed main monitor. btw thanks for review, so i bought kamvas 13
I was on the fence about getting a Huion or XP pen this past weekend. I settled for the Huion Kamvas 13 Pro. I'm not a pro artist by any means so the small things that could get on some artitsts' nerves wasn't a concern for me. So far it's going well. I really wanted Mischief to work with the tablet but the program is no longer getting updates and the cursor would be way off from where I place my pen even after recalibrated. Currently working with Sai and CSP. Thanks for the reviews Brad!
Hey Brad, first of all, im a big fan of your work. Now to the main part: I really wanna get more into digital art. I watched a bunch of reviews and got down to either the Huion Kanvas pro 13 or the iPad pro. I think I like the iPad more because of its mobility. I just don´t know if Procreate has evolved enough to ceep up with desktop-apps like Clipstudio Paint. What do you think? Is having "just" an iPad pro enough or are there still drawbacks compared to a pen-display?
Hi Brad, Can you tell how light or heavy xp-pen’s initial actuation force compare to wacom? Because xp-pen used to need higher force to initiate strokes than wacom. (8g vs 3g) I wonder if xp-pen has improved it ever since.
Still using my xp pen 16 pro for 6 months and sadly I only notice the scratches on the screen a little to late..there's a lot of em in the center. The tablet didn't come with a screen protector and when i finally put one. The scratches become more visible but at least I can draw again. Do you guys got any tips on how to preserve the screen? I'm planning on getting new one later this year
I'd be curious to find out what you think of the Gaomon PD2200. It looks like it has the same pressure levels, tilt, size and resolution as the XP-Pen along with a battery-free stylus but also has a 92%NTSC fully laminated IPS screen and sells for only $399 on Amazon. Unfortunately, it seems that there are nearly zero reviews for it. The only negative I've seen is the lack of physical express keys or a dial (instead it has 6 or 8 capacitive touch buttons along one side). So I'm wondering if it's worth the money or if I should get one of the tablet displays from Huion or XP-Pen instead.
I don't understand why you say a couple of times that these won't get any better. There is a clear path of improvement to quad hd and then to ultra hd. In parallel to that there is the move to fully bonded/laminated displays.
YES! Thank you!!!! The specs on this one are so much better than the 22E's (dat Adobe RGB color space coverage!! Tho I'd have to do a full color calibration to know better, but still). Which was/is already good for the price. I cried for a review of this one almost the minute it got released.... The kind of video where I "like" and comment _before_ watching it. XD
On of the best reviews on this product! I've been trying to install the pen tablet driver to complete my setup. No luck. I am on a MAC running OS14.4. In addition, my display turns on (blue light) and quickly moves to power-saving mode (orange). Do you have any suggestions? I reached out to XPen and waiting for response.
I've had an xp-pen tablet for a few months now, the artist 12 pro and I think there are a couple things I would change. The red ring is rather slippery so I'd add some texture to it for grip and I'd add a button inside the red ring, I feel like they missed out on it. I liked the pen holder add on though, wish mine had that.
Yeah, the ring is great but this is exactly what i thought too. But I'd say it's nitpicking not a major thing or even minor ;). But there should have been a button inside pretty natural for changing the wheel functionality ;)
The stylus may be battery free. But it isn't dust free. This pen monitor seems reall good, but i will wait for Huion Kamvas Pro 24 at 1440p. I hope it isn't very expensive.
I like the screen size for the price. I have a 6th gen. iPad and I don’t think the screen is to small as I can pinch and zoom into the drawing. But if I used the screen size of this monitor it might be luxurious, with all the screen real-estate.
We need low latency high refresh rate display tablets. That is the biggest difference between using the ipad and the wacom for drawing, at least for me
Hey brad ty for the great video, QUESTIONS: currently as of 10/3/2022 the 22R is on sale for $470 and the 22E is selling for $499. Other than rechargeable pen on the E and less buttons , no wheels, no tilt support, why would you want it over the R , Is the 22R for the money today? $20 more for less ? Am I missing something, here Brad? I have a basic Wacom intuos now (no display) & krita software. My budget for either of these will be a stretch. Thankyou for taking the time to respond to my questions , I really appreciate finding your vids.
For those who want to see the parallax, I have the video on my channel. XP Pen sent me a firmware update to fix the cursor accuracy. Overall it's a great tablet for me. The parallax isn't really an issue, very small. One thing that I think all the tablets (including Cintiq) could benefit is less brush lag. It's very low, like microsseconds, but it's a bit annoying when you draw details. I think the only tablets without brush lag so far are the iPad Pros and Galaxy Tabs, but they're portable ones, of course.
Just get XP 15.6 pro a month ago,and this tablet comes up 😅....hope can get this tablet later,or if XP release a new model and bigger I will try to get that!😁TBH I didn't interested with wacom cuz of the price of course!!
